Noel Gallagher Chats To 6 Music Breakfast About His New Album

Noel Gallagher has a new album - it's coming out under his High Flying Birds banner and it doesn't sound like anything he's done before.

Who Built The Moon is released on the 24th November and it's a product of a 2 year collaboration with producer David Holmes. And they've made a very different record - more experimental and loop based as Noel Gallagher told 6 Music Breakfast's Matt Everitt.

Noel Gallagher On Working With David Holmes On 'Who Built The Moon?'

Noel Gallagher was speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X in an interview that was broadcast this morning, about working with producer David Holmes on 'Who Built The Moon?'.

“I’d met David Holmes maybe a year before, and I was a fan of his and I've got all his records and soundtracks that he does. I called him, I said, ‘D’you fancy coming and getting involved with this record?’ He flew over from Belfast, I played him the tracks, and he said, ‘Hmm, they all sound finished to me.’ I said, ‘But I've only just started, these are just demos!’ And he said, ‘No, no, no, they're great, but they're finished. I can't get involved in it, it's gone too far!’

He said, "But if you wanna make a record, come to my studio in Belfast, and we'll do one.’ I said, Well, okay, I've got two or three weeks off here and there.’ He said, ‘Well, just come in the breaks! Don't bring any songs, just bring a guitar and a bag of effects pedals, and we'll write in the studio.’

“I’ve never done that, ever. I always thought people were maniacs for doing it, because it just takes years - it’s taken years to make this record. So I go to Belfast, and the first night we sit and drink and play records. He's an amazing DJ, he's got this room with thousands and millions of records everywhere, and he was pulling out French psychedelic pop and German disco and this, that and the other – all this crazy stuff.

‘He said, ‘What d'you think of this?’ I'm, like, ‘Yeah, I love it!’ And he said, ‘You should be doing stuff like this.’ And I'm like, ‘Really?’ So that went on all night. I got back the next day and he'd made up drum loops and bits that were kind of similar to this kind of music. Then I went away on tour and turned them into songs. Then we kept doing that, I kept going back to Belfast and doing that.

“If I'd had two years off, or after a tour and I'd written a load of songs, I'd be like, ‘Well, I like these songs, and I've written these.’ So because the two things are running concurrently, I was like, ‘Well, I've got this tour, but I can devote a bit of time to this and see where it goes’.”

“I would have been first to go, "You know, I don't think it sounds like me, I'm not having it. Funnily enough, all the tracks on the album sound like my record collection. And there were times when I was kicking the songs into shape, and David would say, ‘The verses are great, but the chorus, just sounds like Oasis!’

“And I'm like, ‘Yeah, I know, brilliant, isn't it!’ And he said, "Yeah, but we've all heard that for the last 25 years, do something different.’ And there was a long process of, (a) me accepting what he was saying, (b) me thinking to myself, ‘But am I capable of anything different?’”

Noel Gallagher On Album Track 'Keep On Reaching'

Noel Gallagher was speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X in an interview that was broadcast this morning, this is what he had to say about 'Keep On Reaching'.

He said “Keep on Reaching sounds like Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye. I'm gonna have to get quite a few backing singers on stage to sing it with me. Honestly, I don’t know how I managed to do it - it sounds like Marvin Gaye. David was saying, ‘When did you sound like Marvin Gaye? I was like, I don’t know, I don’t even know if I’m going to be able to do it live. You know you’ve got a good album when that’s not even going to be a single.”

Noel Gallagher On His New Single ‘Holy Mountain'

Noel Gallagher told Chris Moyles in an interview that was broadcast this morning about working with producer David Holmes on ‘Holy Mountain'.

He said  "How it came about was, one of the first sessions we did, the hook line, the tin whistle thing that is like one of the most catchiest things in the world, is a sample from a track by a brilliantly titled band from the 70s called The Ice Cream, and a track called Chewing Gum Kid, don't try and Google it, it's beyond obscure, you'll never find it..."

“So, we listened to that track, and he said, "D'you like this?" And I was like, ‘Wow! Why have I never heard that before?’ So, we sampled that bit, and the thing, dee, do, do, do... that just went round and round. I worked out the chords, did a bit of jamming on it and we put a drum machine on it…

“David said, ‘D’you think this will make it on the album?’ And I went, ‘Mate, this is gonna be the first single. If it kills me, I am gonna finish this song’.

"Because there's so much joy in that track. My kids love it, it's already a playground anthem in Notting Hill. My kids love it, and all my mates' kids love it. When you hear it, by the second time you hear it, the thing's stuck in your head, and it becomes slightly annoying, I must say, but it's brilliant!”

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds To Release 'Holy Mountain' Next Week?

It's being reported on several various different music websites and forums that Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will release 'Holy Mountain' next week.

The track is taken from 'Who Built The Moon?' that is released on Friday 24th November.

It's already been confirmed that Paul Weller plays the organ on the track.

Describing the process of working with Holmes on album track Holy Mountain, Gallagher previously said: "David played me the sample, so I worked out the chords and we demoed just a few, short minutes of it, taking it away on tour and playing with it. When it became a song back in Belfast it was so joyous, I just had to do it justice. What’s more joyous than being in love, baby? So, I wrote a song about love and it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done".

Noel Gallagher To Write The Theme Tune For James Bond 25

James Bond 25 is still two years away but speculation on who will record its theme song is already well under way.

Following speculation covering the likes of Adele, Beyonce and even little-known bands, now Noel Gallagher’s name has re-entered the conversation.

The former Oasis star has always been open about wanting to record a track for the spy movie franchise, and now it seems he’s inching closer to his goal.

It seems working with film score producer David Holmes on his latest album has refreshed his inspiration, according to The Sun.

“Noel has wanted to do this for a while, and once he started working with David he saw it as the perfect opportunity to use his experience to finish some ideas he had already,” a source claimed.

“He’s going to put his music forward for sure to be considered.”

It had previously been reported that Gallagher had teamed up with Paul Weller to pen a potential ditty for the movie.

“I want to write a James Bond theme tune,” Weller told the BBC earlier this year.

“I’ve got this half a song that me and Noel Gallagher worked on and I think it would be great for a Bond theme. There’s a bit of minor key going on.

“That would be an ambition definitely.”

The 25th Bond movie, currently untitled, will be Daniel Craig’s last.

It’s confirmed for release in November 2019 in the US, with a UK rollout expected slightly earlier.

Paul Weller And Johnny Marr Appear On Noel Gallagher's New Album 'Who Built The Moon?'

Who Built The Moon? has vocalists and guest musicians from around the world appearing across the 11 tracks, which were recorded in Belfast and London. Influences include French psychedelic pop, classic electro, soul, rock, disco and dance.

Gallagher has written the album entirely in the studio for the first time, and there are contributions from Paul Weller (who plays organ on Holy Mountain) and Johnny Marr (taking guitar and harmonica on If Love Is The Law).

The track The Man Who Built The Moon demonstrates some of the working methods, Gallagher and Holmes employed, as Noel reveals: “We took a keyboard riff we liked from an unused track and added chords. A year later we came to deal with it as a song and when we got to the chorus, David kept asking me to write a new one…. again and again and again.

“I was ready to strangle him. The one that you hear is the eighth attempt and, you know what? The annoying thing is he was right.”

Holy Mountain was kick-started by an obscure sample as Noel explains: “David played me the sample, so I worked out the chords and we demoed just a few, short minutes of it, taking it away on tour and playing with it.

Is Noel Gallagher's New Album Finished?

Speaking to the NME in April 2016, Noel said that for his third solo record he’ll be mixing things up. “I am doing something different this time, to amuse myself – I am writing in the studio for the first time. As a rule I’ve not allowed myself to go in with any completed songs, so I am writing in there, it’s happening all around me during the day.”

“Usually I’ll go in, play a song, record an acoustic version of it and then I’ll think of something and we’ll head toward it. Everything we do is a forward motion toward that point. When you’re writing in the studio you don’t know where you’re going, so the flavour of it all can constantly shift. It’s a bit chaotic but the end results are great so far.”

May 2016, producer David Holmes told Gigwise .“People are going to be surprised. I think people love Noel and they’re desperate for him to make a really big, bold, uptempo beast of a record – a lot of Noel’s music is quite mid-tempo. This one is quite fun.”

Noel spoke about the as yet untitled album again in an interview in June 2016, saying that it’s shaping up to be a “rock’n’roll record”. “Can I point out that it’s not electronic? Everyone thinks that it’s an electronic record, and it isn’t,” He told Exclaim. “Well, not yet, anyway. The first six tracks aren’t electronic. For some reason they all associate David with electronic music. To be honest, I was hoping we might do something electronic, but it’s turning out to be a rock’n’roll record, which is fine with me".

During an appearance on his pal Russell Brand’s radio show last month Noel let slip that the album is being scheduled for a November release. He confirmed that there will be a track called ‘Instrumental Number Three’.

Noel Gallagher has teased the release date of his long-awaited new album.

The former Oasis man has been working on his third album with the High Flying Birds, the follow-up to 2015’s ‘Chasing Yesterday‘, with producer David Holmes – revealing last year that the album would be finished by June.

Now, he’s given fans an update on the long-awaited record. Appearing this weekend on Russell Brand’s Radio X show, Gallagher said “I believe it’s slated for a November release”. When pushed for a song title, he said “there’s one just called instrumental number three”.

While last week it was rumoured that Gem Archer had joined the High Flying Birds, Noel will be kicking off a UK and European tour in July to support U2 for the anniversary of ‘The Joshua Tree’ – something that Liam attacked him for, accusing him of ‘brown-nosing’ the band.

Noel Gallagher Is Planning To Complete His Album By June

Noel Gallagher has revealed that he is planning to complete his third solo album by next June.

The former Oasis chief, who is working on the follow up to 2015’s ‘Chasing Yesterday’ with producer David Holmes, previously said he was hoping to finish the record by the end of this year.

But he has now said he wants everything wrapped up before Glastonbury.

“I think we’re into the home straight now. I’ve been given the deadline which is to have everything finished – mastered, artwork, videos, the lot – done by the time I go to Glastonbury in June,” he told BBC Radio 6 Music.

Gallagher regularly goes to Glastonbury, but he is yet to perform there. He gave no indication that he will be playing at the festival next year.

Of the recording process he added: “All the songs that I was writing towards making a record have not been used because when we decided to make a record with David Holmes the way he works is that all the writing gets done in the studio.

“So I started this record at his house in Belfast. The process is the complete opposite to the way that I’ve always worked. With this, you have no idea what you’ve got until it’s there, and the end results are great because they’re constantly evolving.”

Holmes previously said that “people are going to be surprised” by the “fun” feel of the record.

“It’s going really good,” He added. “We’re a good bit into it now, we’ve got nearly five tracks done now.”

His comments prompted Liam Gallagher to label Holmes a “yes man” and Noel a “potato” before tweeting “FUCK OASIS”.

Liam Gallagher Tweets 'Fuck Oasis' And Calls Brother Noel A Potato

'You're nothing but a YES man': Liam Gallagher reignites his feud with Noel as he brands his brother a 'potato' in argument with a record producer.

The Gallagher brothers' long-standing feud appeared to revert right back to playground tactics on Tuesday as Liam, 43, called Noel, 48, a 'potato' on Twitter, and seemingly reignited their fight.

Former Oasis rocker Liam appeared to take issue with record producer David Holmes who identified Noel's new High Flying Birds record as 'fun' in an interview published that morning.

'FUN is that what you call it your (sic) nothing but a YES man remember that GINGE,' he wrote as part of a string of angry posts on Tuesday.

Liam then posted a side-profile picture of his older brother Noel, which he simply captioned with the word 'Potato' and for emphasis, posted it twice in one minute.

Prompting an onslaught of abuse from Oasis fans, his untagged rant continued: 'Go on have a whinge fan boys LG x' and finally: 'F**** P****'

Liam's rage comes after Holmes' insight into the new record, as part of an interview with Manchester Evening News.

The producer said: 'People are going to be surprised (by the new record). I think people love Noel and they're desperate for him to make a really big, bold, uptempo beast of a record - a lot of Noel's music is quite mid-tempo. This one is quite fun.

'It's not for me to say what it sounds like, it's his record - I'm just helping him try to realise a different way of working and stuff.

'You're going to have to wait and see. He's a brilliant guitar player, and he's really getting into guitar pedals and stuff. He's got two great ears.'

Holmes was unveiled as the record producer behind Noel's latest album just last month, when he admitted to working 'in a way I've never worked before.'

Finally, it seemed like the Gallagher brothers had made amends after years of feuding in March 2015 when Liam tweeted a selfie with an Access All Area pass to Noel's High Flying Birds show.

The younger Gallagher brother captioned the picture: 'Keeping it in the family... LG x' as he covered up his mouth with the Keep It Dangerous homecoming gig tag.

Liam famously quit Oasis the band in 2009 just as they were about to play a gig and the volatile duo have been at loggerheads ever since.

Getting frank about their physical conflict, Noel told Esquire magazine in November last year that the band collapsed after a 'massive fistfight.'

'The last six months were f***ing awful,' he recalled. 'It was excruciating. Me and Liam had a massive, massive, massive fistfight three weeks before the world tour started.

'And fights like that in the past would always be easy to rectify but for some reason I wasn't going to let it go this time. I was just like, "F**k this ****." And there was an atmosphere all the way around the world.'

The musician even blasted his brother in a foul-mouthed rant on stage that July, mid-way through a High Flying Birds gig at Cork's Marquee venue.

He told a heckler at the show: 'Liam’s at home looking at himself in the mirror. Fortunately, he’s still not as big a c*** as you are. Imagine that. Being the bigger c***.'

Previously, Liam distinguished between 'the band Noel' and his brother 'our kid,' telling the Clash in 2003 that he 'f***in' despise[d]' the musical side of Noel but still loved him, as an individual.

He revealed: 'He knows my feelings' the singer explained. Everyone knows my feelings, I'm not shy with that.

'I love our kid - as in the Noel that's not in a band and not in the music business and not all that bullsh** that people see he is. But the band Noel? The f***in' geezer that's in the band? I f***in' absolutely f***in' despise [him].

'And I guess he feels the same way. But if you speak to him, he'll probably go: "Yeah, I know; I hate both the c***s'. But yeah, I love our kid when he's not surrounded by the bullsh**."'

In 2015, Noel waded into Liam's family life, calling it 'a f**king mess' as he referred to Liam's love child and affair with current girlfriend Debbie Gwyther while still married to Nicole Appleton.

'As we know, you can't plan 30 seconds of your life with him as it can go t*ts up any time,' Noel told The Sun last November.

Having appeared to bury the hatchet, fans were given fresh hope that the siblings were on the right path to a reunion.

Meanwhile, the title of Oasis' documentary based on their infamous shows at Knebworth back in 1996 was announced earlier this month.

Supersonic comes from Academy Award-winning executive producer Asif Kapadia, who brought us AMY and filmmaker Mat Whitecross, producer James Gay Rees and alongside Fiona Neilson.

Noel said of the release: 'The love and the vibe and the passion and the rage and the joy that are coming from the crowd, if anything, that’s what Oasis was.'

While Liam added: 'Oasis was definitely like a f***ing Ferrari, great to look at, great to drive and it will f***ing spin out of control every now and again when you go too fast. I loved every minute of it.'

Liam, who confirmed his band Beady Eye had split via Twitter in October 2014, previously told German magazine Event that they had a considerable amount of footage from the shows staged on August 10 and 11 of that year.

Oh yeah! Just because it'll be the 20th anniversary of our Knebworth concerts in 2016,' Gallagher said.

'And because we're a bunch of nutters, we've completely forgotten that we had actually filmed the whole thing. With like 20 cameras and a lot of what happened on the festival ground as well.
'Like fans arriving, backstage sequences, interviews and flights over the area. Which we've never released. I've no idea why.'

He added: 'We decided that 2016 would be a good moment to do so, since Knebworth was the highlight of our career.

'We think that the 20th would make a good occasion to reflect on that, or to tell the history of Oasis - and then leave it at that. So far there's going to be a documentary and a live album.'

Noel and Liam played the gigs with fellow band members Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan and drummer Alan White to 250,000 people.

David Holmes Gives An Update On Noel Gallagher's New Album

David Holmes the man who's producing Noel Gallagher's new album spoke to GigWise on the progress of the album.

He said when questioned the pair would be working together "Why did he fucking announce that?" laughed Holmes. "Yeah, it's going really good. We're a good bit into it now, we've got nearly five tracks done now. People are going to be surprised. I think people love Noel and they're desperate for him to make a really big, bold, uptempo beast of a record - a lot of Noel's music is quite mid-tempo. This one is quite fun."

He continued: "Noel's straightforward, he normally just reacts - he either goes 'yeah, that's great' or 'no, that's not for me', or to be perfectly blunt 'no that's fookin' shite'. It's been really good, Keefus has been playing on it - it's been a fun experience. He's super talented and a joy to work with."

Is Noel Gallagher Making His Own Bid For An Oscar?

Noel Gallagher is getting closer to his Oscar dream after teaming up with a soundtrack great.

David Holmes, who has scored hit movies including Ocean’s Eleven, is producing the singer’s next solo album.

Now the hope is that Hollywood bigwigs will use his new material for a movie and get Noel that Academy Award nod.

An insider told me: “With David’s influence, getting the music on to a film soundtrack stands a very good chance.”

UK stars Adele, 27, and Sam Smith, 23, have nabbed an Oscar in recent years.

And the elder Gallagher, 48, admits he’s a bit jealous.

He said recently: “It would be nice if I could write a song for a fi lm which would win me an Oscar.”

Due out next year, the rock legend called his new solo music “f***ing brilliant”, dashing any lingering Oasis reunion hopes.

Producer David, who is up for an Ivor Novello Award, recently remixed some of Noel's work.

And Noel explained: “I’m working with a producer in a way I’ve never worked before which is writing in the studio and my producer’s suggesting jumping off points.

“The end results are pretty good at the moment.”

He said at the time "When I first heard 'The Girl With The X Ray Eyes' I immediately heard the influence of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' which made me think of another great version by the Langley Schools Project... after listening to the lyrics on repeat for a few hours I thought they had a real picture book sensibility so I called my daughter's primary school teacher John Hunter who is a massive Noel fan. I told him my idea and he spoke to the head master who give us permission . So John rehearsed the kids for 5 days during breaks with Claire Dean (music teacher ) and I stopped by and recorded it in their assembly hall."
