Johnny Marr Joins Noel Gallagher On Stage In Manchester

A Smiths legend formed an impromptu Mancunian supergroup as he joined Noel Gallagher on stage at his homecoming show.

Johnny Marr made a surprise appearance to perform alongside his pal at the gig at the arena tonight.

The 51-year-old guitarist, known for his killer riffs, was unveiled as the special guest to a rapturous reception at the end of a night which saw Noel mix songs from his new solo album with a raft of Oasis classics.

However, rumours of an appearance by his brother Liam proved unfounded.

The former frontman sparked a frenzy earlier by Tweeting: “Hometown gig Monday night, keeping it dangerous. LG x”.

However, there were no reported sightings of him at the show.

He did, however, again take to Twitter to express his pleasure at Man United’s FA Cup defeat to Arsenal across town at Old Trafford.

Johnny Marr On The Black Les Paul He Gave Noel Gallagher

Johnny Marr has been asked in an interview with musicradar.com is there a guitar he regrets letting go?.

He said "[Laughs] That's a tricky one. Noel Gallagher's got my black Les Paul that I used on the album The Queen Is Dead. But he's a good boy, so I'll let it go. There's another answer to the Noel thing: I was drinking a lot in those days! But I like to help other musicians out.

"I know that I got a lot of helping hands when I was starting out. Some people were very generous to me; without them, I wouldn't have gotten to where I am. What goes around comes around. With Noel, the guitars went to a really good home. He wrote some great stuff with them, so it all worked out.

"I've given quite a few away over the years. I gave one to Chrissie Hynde, and Bernard Butler has my ES-335 12-string that I used on Strangeways, Here We Come and with the Talking Heads. I've given [The The singer- songwriter] Matt Johnson a guitar, too.

"I've been very happy to hang out with the Radiohead guys, and I loaned them guitars for In Rainbows. You recognise kindred spirits. I'm proud of that kind of thing."

Noel Gallagher has been speaking to The Sun about his friendship with Johnny Marr, Paul Weller And Bono.

He said “The two of us like to f*****g talk for England,” he says. “When Johnny left our session, my engineer collapsed, exhausted from listening to us.I just can’t cope with you both talking and talking.’ I’d seen him the week before, too".

He Added “But I never get fazed with him or Paul Weller or any other hero of mine I now know. Even meeting Neil Young, who is a superhero to me, was disarming. Then you’ve got my mate Bono, who is such a brilliant comedian. And compassionate. He is probably the one rock star who puts his heart where his mouth is. These people have nothing to prove and are themselves.”

Another Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'Chasing Yesterday'

With a title like "Chasing Yesterday" you would think that Oasis mastermind Noel Gallagher would be trying to recapture the youthful blare of classic Oasis, but you would only be half-right.

The album finds Noel in top-notch songwriting form. Some of these melodies are so undeniable it would be a shame if the album doesn't take Noel to a place where he is finally recognized outside of his band.

With his two solo albums he has decided to market them under the band name "Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds," instead of taking full, unadulterated credit. However, listening to this set of songs hardly gives the impression of the High Flying Birds as a living, breathing "band." Instead, this sounds exactly what you would expect from a Noel Gallagher solo album. Tight songwriting, understated vocals, musicianship and psychedelic production work.

What is missing is Liam's brash, heathen-like personality bending up to sing into the mic with his hands behind his back. But later-day Oasis albums were also bogged down by Liam's basic and repetitive songwriting style. Noel seemed fine stepping back and letting his brother and other bandmates give songwriting a try, but part of it felt like a big brother pushing his little brother on the bike and letting the little brother glide for a bit before crashing into a bush. With Chasing Yesterday you get ten top-drawer Noel Gallagher compositions.

You know an album is strong when the first single is good but completely overshadowed by a handful of album tracks. "In The Heat Of The Moment" (Not the song by Asia) announced a new, hungry sounding Noel with its huge chorus and nearly funky backbeat. "The Dying Of The Light" finds Noel in a dreary mood, with it's world-weary lyrics, but its grunge-meets-Smiths vibe is totally radio-ready. The usually non-experimental Noel tries something completely new with "The Right Stuff" dueting with a chanteuse over a jammy jazz loop. The result is surprisingly sexy and an unexpected left-turn.

Gallagher has always been unafraid to wear his influences on his sleeve, sometimes even coming close to plagiarism and Chasing Yesterday continues this streak. "The Girl With X-Ray Eyes" pillages "Stairway To Heaven", making it the one misstep on the album. The song title "While The Song Remains The Same" also conjures images of Led Zeppelin but with its driving beat and super-catchy melody all can be forgiven. Opener "Riverman" also is a weird image for Noel, who has never portrayed himself as a back-to-nature type gent. Fear not: Noel hasn't gown a grizzly-man beard nor is he wearing a straw hat. It is simply a metaphor of getting back to the basics and the track revels in its psychedelic textures not unlike a jam band.

Noel has always ended his albums on a high note. This time it's "You Know We Can't Go Back" a pummeling, inspiring coming-of-age anthem. If this does not become a world-wide hit, somebody at the record label needs to get fired. It's got everything we loved with Oasis: affirmation, danger, rebellion and hope. Then album closer "Ballad Of The Mighty I" ends the set with a cameo by Noel's hero Johnny Marr and a winding, convoluted song structure that pays off in the end.

Most were unimpressed with Noel Gallagher's first outing with the High Flying Birds. It stuck a little too close to the script and left little to imagination. With Chasing Yesterday he ironically finds his own future. By mixing psychedelic experimentalism with his ear for classic songwriting, Noel could live forever like this and it even makes you wonder if he even needs his brother.

I give Chasing Yesterday by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 4 and 1/2 Empty Lighthouses out of 5.

On Tracks on 'Chasing Yesterday'.

Parts of both "Lock All the Doors" and "The Dying of the Light" were written in Oasis era.

Noel almost finished writing "The Dying of the Light" during the recording of the first album, but he thought it was not appropriate song for his fisrt album, so he dropped it from the album.

Early verse of 'Lock All the Doors' became 'Setting Sun', and he tried to write a new verse for it several times but failed.

Originally 'The Right Stuff' and 'The Mexican' were recorded during sessions with Amorphous Androgynous.

'Riverman' and 'The Right Stuff' were done at about the end of recording for Chasing Yesterday.

'The Right Stuff' mood and arrangement are totally different from the one recorded by Amorphous Androgynous, which Noel didn't like so much.

He thought it was going to be B-side before it was completed.

On Recording the album.

Noel and Paul Stacey played almost all the instruments on the recording.

Paul played keyboards, guitar solo in 'Riverman' and 'The Girl With X-Ray Eyes', and the bass in 'Ballad Of the Mighty I'.

Noel played the guitars and bass in five songs, that are 'Riverman', 'In the Heat of the Moment', 'The Dying Of The Light', 'The Right Stuff' and 'The Mexican'.

On the reissue of Oasis' Be Here Now

The 'Be Here Now' reissue will be out one day, but he hasn't decided if  it will be out this year or sometime soon..

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the legendary Knebworth concerts, so he's thinking about a idea and said "Shall I have special plan for 20th anniversary?".

Noel also wants to remaster and reissue some of albums that were released after 'Be Here Now'.

In addition , the magazine's interviewer said.

Lock All the Doors reminds us of rough and loud live concerts in early oasis era, and While the Song Remains the Same is like Neil Young, and You Know We Can't Go Back is reminiscent of Rock 'n' Roll Star, also there is the opener Riverman.

This album has got rock tunes with explosive guitar solos.

Noel's rock spirit like DM came back, and CY has also his new features.

'The Right Stuff' is composed of mainly instrumental part as Space jazz/Ambient Music-ish, and 'The Mexican' is new waver dance beat, then 'Ballad of the Mighty I' has disco beat, electric piano and Johnny Marr's guitar.

Noel Gallagher On His New Album 'Chasing Yesterday'

Noel Gallagher has said that his new album 'Chasing Yesterday' is full of "songs that make you kind of punch in the air while crying a little bit".

The description of the record, which is released on March 2, features in a list of 10 things to know about 'Chasing Yesterday' which features in this week's issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally.

Speaking about the album, Gallagher said that triumphant yet emotional songs are what he feels "most comfortable writing". He added: "It's the Irish in me, that's what we do. We're never happy. We rage joy. Even 'Some Might Say', for instance, is a very melancholic Irish kind of anthem."

Gallagher also said that he had to recruit Johnny Marr to appear on 'Ballad of The Mighty I' because he doesn't have "the funk" like Marr does. "I tried to get him on the last record because there's a bit in 'AKA...What A Life!' that I thought needed a bit of funk, and he's got the funk, but he couldn't do it, so I had to do it. And I was embarrassed doing it because I haven't got the funk."

Interviewer: Your music is becoming more danceable. Last time AKA What a Life took the lead, now I counted no more than three songs with a clear dance rhythm.

Noel: Oh yeah, more than enough dance influences. Not strictly dance, but the rhythms are clearly more diverse then they use to be. It can come from anywhere and can fit anything really. Look, I start every tune off on the acoustic guitar. Back in Oasis, three quarters of that had to be turned up to level stadium—that was the way it was. Now I’m fully in charge, even when it comes to producing the record. That was the first time by the way, nevertheless, I didn’t have to think about anyone other than myself and I didn’t have to listen to anyone. That went great. I take the bare bone tracks to the studio and then… magic happens! Take the Ballad of the Mighty I. Pure dance tune. For some time I’ve had a slower psychedelic version of that song with conga’s, very 1969. In in the back my mind I had the idea to make it lighter, a bassline played by my engineer Paul Stacey and a drum beat was added. They give it the needed energy. Then Johnny Marr did his thing and he really made a twisted disco tune. And knowing that no one can forbid me to make a dance tune and the fact that I was satisfied turned it into the cracker of the album. The first version of the song was great, the second even better. I was right. Again.

Noel Gallagher On The Plan For A Oasis Musical

In an exclusive chat with Jon Holmes, Noel said an American had pitched an Oasis "rags to riches" musical to him - and he found the idea hilarious.

Noel Gallagher has admitted that he might have blown the chance to make an Oasis musical a reality...because he found it so hilarious.

Noel was talking as he unveiled brilliant new song The Ballad Of The Mighty I, which features Johnny Marr, on the XFM Breakfast Show.

"Somebody did talk to me once about a musical, recently, an American dude," Noel told Jon. "And after I'd stopped laughing, I realised that he'd walked off."

Gallagher said the pitch was for "the rags to riches story of Oasis" to be put onstage. "After I'd belly-laughed and spewed up a drink, he wasn't there any more, so I don't think it'll be happening any time soon!"

Sting's multi-million dollar musical The Last Ship closed on Broadway after less than three months - something Noel didn't seem to have a lot of sympathy for.

"Some people have no taste, I find that staggering that people would not go and see a musical about a Geordie fella who doesn't speak in a Geordie accent who used to be in a band with a jazz drummer whose dad was in the CIA about him growing up in a shipyard.

"The mind boggles."

'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' next single will be the 'Ballad Of The Mighty I' and available on January 13, 2015 according to AMAZON.COM.

The track features Johnny Marr who spoke earlier this year about the track "He contacted me and said he had a song that he'd be happy for me to play on," Marr says. "I accpeted, gladly, and it was was really good to spend a day playing guitar in a little studio near Chelsea Bridge. When that was done I listened to about eight songs on the album."

Asked how the album sounds, Marr continues: "It's really good. What I heard of it was very melodic, some of it pretty rocking too, and fans are going to really like it. He doesn't do things he doesn't think are great. And his singing is really good on the album."

EW: Your recent London show made headlines when Oasis’s Noel Gallagher joined you for The Smiths’ ‘How Soon is Now?’ and Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust for Life’. How fun was that?

JOHNNY MARR: That was a good moment. First off, it sounded really good. ‘Lust for Life’ with very loud guitars really gets you going! What Noel played on ‘How Soon is Now?’ was great. It reminded me of the sort of stuff I used to do, with all this echo. It was quite psychedelic.

How did the audience react?

Musically, it was a nice surprise and there was a really nice feeling in the place, because everyone knows Noel and I have been mates for a long time. It’s one of the perks of having your own band. Since The Messenger came out, I’ve had Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene, Billy Duffy from The Cult, Ronnie Wood, and [Smith’s bassist] Andy Rourke get up with me. Noel getting up was a real treat. We don’t do it too often, but if one of my friends is in town, we drag them out of the house and put them to work.

Noel Gallagher: 'I Don't See An Oasis Reunion Happening'

Noel Gallagher appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show last night (November 22) and shattered the hearts of many Oasis fans.

When asked by Ross as to what the problem with Oasis is and the reason they have not reformed, Gallagher informed the audience: "I don't see the appeal. If I close my eyes I don't see it happening" before clarifying, "that's not to say that it never will. I've got a lot of things going on."

Noel went on to reveal that his relationship with former bandmate and brother Liam is non-existent and that the pair do not speak: “There’s no problem. We don’t speak to each other so there’s no problem.”

Gallagher recently announced details of his new album Chasing Yesterday, under the name of Noel Gallagher & The High Flying Birds. The album will be released on March 2, 2015. The album will feature a collaboration with Johnny Marr on the track ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’.

Earlier this week, Noel Gallagher doubted Russell Brand’s plan for a revolution, saying to XFM: "I think his revolutionary ideals might be as short-lived as his acting career! He's a good lad, Russell, and I love him dearly like a boyfriend. I think he should stand in the election, because it's alright saying the words and all, but then you're relying on other people to implement all this stuff you're going on about.”

Noel Gallagher believes hallucinogenic mushrooms are superior to music because they provide a longer high than a three-minute pop song.

Noel Gallagher thinks taking hallucinogenic mushrooms is better than music.

The former Oasis star admits he was more interested in taking drugs as a youngster rather than becoming a rock star, especial 'magic' mushrooms that make you have weird visions.

Talking about the suburb of Burnage in Manchester where he was raised, he explained: ''Where I come from, it's not musical at all, although Manchester is, obviously.

''I don't say it to be cool, but we were more into taking drugs and banging around in the park [than listening to music]. Music's great and all that, but it's not as good as mushrooms.''

The 47-year-old musician - who will release his second solo album, 'Chasing Yesterday', on March 2, 2015 - added: ''Pop songs are three minutes long. You get a good six hours out of mushrooms.''

Noel also spoke about his performance with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr last month at The O2 Brixton Academy, London, admitting that he was suffering on stage after having consumed too much alcohol the previous evening.

Speaking at the 'XFM presents An Evening In Conversation With Noel Gallagher' event, he confessed: ''I don't think I've ever been so f***ing hungover on stage in all my life.

''I was getting a back rub from his wife about two minutes before going on. If somebody had come up to me and said 'You don't have to do this' I would have been, like, 'F***ing, yes.'

Noel Gallagher On Playing Live With Johnny Marr And More

Noel Gallagher has revealed that he was hungover during his recent live performance with Johnny Marr at the O2 Brixton Academy in London last month.

Gallagher had joined Marr on stage during his headline set, performing 'How Soon Is Now' and a cover of Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life'.

The former Oasis guitarist took part in a Q&A session for XFM radio station yesterday evening (November 3) at the Hammersmith Club in London. Grilled by a panel of interviewers which included Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire, Gallagher discussed his new LP, which is set for release on March 2 next year (2015), plus his recent live team-up with the former Smiths guitarist.

"I don’t think I've ever been so fucking hungover on stage in all my life," he said. "I was getting a back rub from his wife about two minutes before going on stage. If somebody had come up to me and said 'You don't have to do this' I would have been, like, 'Fucking, yes'. It was my wife's birthday the night before and we'd smashed the arse out of it. I forgot I was playing with him. I promised him because he played on my record. He said 'Get up and do 'How Soon Is Now'' and then he drops another song on me on the day. But I did it because I'm a fucking trooper."

"I'd never played 'Lust For Life' before. You forget that you know all the words to it. 'How Soon Is Now' drags on a bit though, doesn't it?"

Gallagher also claimed that Marr has played a pivotal role in his life and career, a fact that he says is often overlooked because of his relationship with his brother and fellow Oasis member, Liam.

Elsewhere during the discussion, Gallagher also revealed how he first met Marr. "During the acid house craze in the late 80s I'd bump into this guy in the Hacienda: didn't know his name or who he was. And we weren't friends, we were just on nodding terms. One day, I bought The The album 'Dusk', which he [Marr] played on. And I bump into this guy I recognize from the Hacienda. He asked me what I bought and he said 'Oh, our kid plays on that.' I said 'Who's your kid?' And he said 'Johnny Marr'. I was like 'Wow'. I told him I was in a band and he said 'Give us a cassette and I'll give it to a kid.' Within an hour, Johnny had called me. And I was a nobody – nobody was into our band, bar the five people in it and a few hangers-on. That was it. But he was on the phone saying 'Ah, I think this is great.' So in many ways he was the first ever fan. Two days later I go for a drink with him. He asked where I get my guitars from. 'Guitars? Guitars? I'll tell you where I got my one guitar from."

Gallagher's upcoming record 'Chasing Yesterday' will be his second solo studio album and features his new single 'In The Heat Of The Moment'. Marr features on the track 'The Ballad Of Mighty I'.

Shaun Ryder Says 'Liam Gallagher Should Get Himself A TV Chat Show

Happy Mondays' frontman Shaun Ryder has said he thinks Liam Gallagher should get himself a TV chat show.

Ryder made his suggestions for the Beady Eye singer in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally. He said: "Apart from have another crew cut, I think he should get himself a TV chat show."

Others, including Johnny Marr, also gave their suggestions as to what they think the ex-Oasis frontman should do now that his latest band Beady Eye have split. Marr, who performed live with Noel Gallagher earlier this month, maintained that Liam should stick to what he's good at, despite the press attention and drama that follows him.

"Liam loves music and loves being in a band. People shouldn't forget that," he said. "It's a shame all this stuff kicks up, because his fame gets in the way of that love. It's not a job, it's a passion he's had since he was a teenager, and he's really good at it.

"I'd hate to see the consequences of his band breaking up and the soap opera that goes with it stop him making music. Oasis were together a long time; the fact they're brothers might mean they have to go off and live their own lives more than people in a regular band, because they've been together since they were children.

"There is a human being in there, who brings people happiness, and people need to remember that."

Producer Alan McGee, who's known Gallagher since May 1993 when he signed Oasis to Creation Records, added: "I love Liam – whatever he wants to do is fine with me."

This week, it was revealed that Liam Gallagher will perform The Who Band as part of a Teenage Cancer Trust gig next month. It will be his first live appearance since the demise of Beady Eye.
