Noel Gallagher Refers To Songwriting As Going Fishing

Noel Gallagher compares writing songs to going fishing.

The 'Everybody's On The Run' singer views the songwriting process as completely unpredictable and after almost 20 years in the music business he compares his guitar to a fishing rod searching for a big catch.

He said: ''I refer to it (songwriting) as going fishing. There are songs and they're all just flowing through the river of life, and your guitar is a fishing rod and some days you get a catch, some days you don't.''

The former Oasis guitarist is planning to take a break from music following a year on the road touring his hit debut solo album 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'.

Noel will only head back in the studio when he is bored of his wife Sarah MacDonald's moaning or he suddenly feels inspired.

The musician - who has two sons, Donovan, five, and Sonny, two, with Sara - said: ''I like to get as far away from it as possible when I've finished touring because it's so full on, not just the gigs, but all the other stuff around it.

''I don't know when I'll next write, it will either come from some kind of creative call from somewhere, or it will be the elbow from the wife. Which it was last time. You know, you get that over breakfast, 'When are you going to go back in the studio?' I'll wait for the nudge from Sara.''

Noel Gallagher Banned From Buying His Family Christmas Tree This Year

Noel Gallagher was banned from buying his family Christmas tree this year.

The gobby rocker was shown a red card by wife Sara, 39, after being rude to a tree seller last year.

The Manc legend, 45, said: “You don’t get a chance to sit around with my missus at Christmas. She said to me, ‘I’m going to get the tree. You’re not invited to get the tree because you were so mean and awful to the man last year!’ I think the bloke was giving me the tree’s life history and I said ‘Look mate it’s minus two here, I’m not interested. Just stick it in the back of the Rolls and shut up’.

“Christmas is a lot of nonsense for me.”

Despite his Grinchlike misdemeanour, the High Flying Birds front man has brought his missus some fancy Christmas presents.

He said: “I got Mrs Gallagher a sparkly thing and some books.

“What is she going to get me with my money? It’s every man’s sore point.

“I’m trying to keep it down to a family pack of Squares crisps.

“She’s insisting she buys me some outlandish David Bowie photograph.

“I said I don’t really need that. I’ll just have the crisps.

“I don’t really need anything.”

With a first name like Noel, there's a good chance Christmas is a fun time for the rock star.

And Mr. Gallagher certainly enjoyed a jingle bell rock with his family in Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland.

The 45-year old rocker took his son Donovan, 5, along with his partner Sara MacDonald to the launch of the London attraction.

They chose a colourful attraction that the little one couldn't be more excited to ride, and his father seemed just as eager.

Other famous faces enjoying the new Christmas park were Rod Stewart and Nell McAndrews.

The Sailing singer brought his wife Penny Lancaster, 41 and his two kids - one-year old Aiden and six-year old Alastair.

It's not known whether Noel bumped into any of the other celebrities but Penny certainly crossed paths with Nell as they both took their sons on the helter skelter.
It's hard to place Noel's recent comments on drug use with this picture of familial bliss.

For whilst the Gallagher clan enjoyed some traditional Christmas merriment, he told Alan Carr on his pre-recorded Catty Man TV show that he wouldn't mind his kids using narcotics 'in moderation.'

He sparked a flurry of Twitter chat with people weighing in on his progressive comments.

And he was met with criticism by users such as Fleetstreetfox who tweeted her article with the comment, 'Noel Gallagher - not the sharpest tool in the box. Probably all those drugs'.

But the thick-skinned rocker would hardly let a tweet like that ruin his festive fun.

Check out the pictures here.

Noel Gallagher's Walking In A Winter Wonderland

Oasis legend Noel Gallagher showed his softer side by taking son Donovan to a new Winter Wonderland attraction.

The Wonderwall songwriter, 45, enjoyed playing Daddy with partner Sara MacDonald at the launch in Hyde Park, London.

Also having fun were rocker Rod Stewart, 67, wife Penny Lancaster, 41, and their brood.

The couple’s two sons Alastair, six, and one-year-old Aiden got stuck into the festive activities. Penny and Aiden had a whale of a time on the helter skelter, while Nell McAndrew also went along for the ride with son Devon, six.

Other famous faces at the event included X Factor stars James Arthur, 24, Christopher Maloney, 34, and boy band Union J.

Model Kate Price, 34, and her daughter Princess Tiaamii, five, were also there.

Winter Wonderland will be open until January 13 and the attractions include a “Magical Ice Kingdom” of sculptures, a circus, ice rink, rides and a chance to visit Santa.

Noel Gallagher Refuses To Take Driving Test

This makes me feel slightly better about being a remedial driver.

The 45-year-old rocker - who has sons Donovan, five, and Sonny, two, with wife Sara MacDonald, as well as 12-year-old daughter Anais with former spouse Meg Matthews - is being forced to take lessons by his spouse, but is so determined not to legally be allowed behind the wheel, he says he will deliberately fail if he ever sits his driving test.

He said: "My lovely wife is insisting I take driving lessons. She said, 'Who is going to take the boys to the football?' And I am like, 'Well you are.' But I have sussed it, you see. If I ever qualify for a test I will deliberately fail. I would rather be in the passenger seat. I would crash a lot of cars. I have had 40-odd years looking out the window."

The former Oasis guitarist also admitted his rock 'n' roll lifestyle means he isn't too keen on his sons reaching their teens but he won't advise them to stay away from smoking and drugs completely - so long as they remember one thing... Spouting his nuggets on Alan Carr: Chatty Man tonight (10.00pm, Channel 4), he said: "I am dreading them in their teens. My attitude is everything in moderation, but I have told them, 'You will never be as cool as your dad'." Ah, every teenager's red rag. While you're at it, tell them they'll never amount to anything and watch the megalomania set in.

As it happens, Noel's partying days appear to be behind him, what with the rough heads he gets nowadays: "I find hangovers dreadful now. Terrible. It's called age. I usually wake up still drunk and when I go out to get the papers I wonder which way the traffic is going (no wonder he doesn't want to drive). The longest bender I have been on? I went three days without sleep once and ended up in hospital but that was a good party."

I won't tell you the longest stint I've stayed up, it's not advisable. The one nugget I will dispense, however, is the following. Learn to drive before you get pregnant, Noel. Baby brain is a b*tch. That and lessons aren't that productive when you mount a pavement trying to move the car out of your estate, not once but twice, and then you end up crying for two hours 'cause there's no way you'll ever be able to drive the baby anywhere in an emergency.

Noel Gallagher: You Won't Be Cool Like Me

Noel Gallagher isn’t a man to mince his words, even when his own kids are concerned.

The outspoken fella has told his sons Donovan, five, and Sonny, two, they’ll never be cool rock ’n’ roll stars like him.

Chatting about being a dad, Noel, 45, said: “I have a mug which says Greatest Dad in the World, so I must be pretty good. My wife says I am f***ing useless, so I guess I am somewhere in the middle.

“I am dreading them in their teens though. My attitude is everything in moderation, but I have told them: ‘You will never be as cool as your dad.’”

Although he did reveal that Donovan likes listening to acid house and Dizzee Rascal before bed. Sounds pretty cool for a five-year-old.

Meanwhile, Noel admits his mum is desperate for him and brother/nemesis Liam to call a truce.

He tells Alan Carr on tonight’s Chatty Man: “Me and Liam have not spoken. I’m busy. We did text each other last Christmas because our mam made us.

“We are not a Christmas family. I hate Christmas. I am not a people person. Christmas and people wearing hats ... nah.

“I did smash his guitar. yes. I put my foot through his guitar and then he threw it at me.” He also admits Liam, 40, decided to call their band Oasis and he was never a fan of the name.

Noel sniped: “He came up with the name. I was not arsed.

“It’s a s*** name for a band anyway.”

Oasis fans are holding out for a reunion, especially as their 20th anniversary will be in 2014.

But it seems unlikely.

Dashing the hearts of fans everywhere Noel revealed: “It would take Liam or myself to be very skint and I know that is not going to happen.

‘The last time I saw Liam he didn’t say much. The day will pass and people will realise the anniversary just has not happened.”

Noel Gallagher Spotted Leaving Club Sensibly With The Wife

Rock star Noel Gallagher and wife Sara MacDonald look a right pair or hail-raisers — sensibly cabbing it home from a night out.

High Flying Birds frontman Noel, 45, and Sara, 42, were leaving London members’ club The Groucho before he heads off on a US tour.

She even pulled some dance moves in the back. They were spotted with Radio 1’s bouffant-haired DJ Nick Grimshaw.

Looks like they all had a wonderwall time.

Noel Gallagher On Love, Life, Liam And Heaven On Earth

Rocker Noel Gallagher believes his wife is a real-life angel who helped him quit his rock and roll ways for good.

The former Oasis guitarist told how he met Sara MacDonald in an Ibiza club during his wild days — and he’s never looked back.

In a candid interview on RTE’s Meaning of Life with Gay Byrne, the singer said: “My wife is an angel to me — and a real one.

“She appeared out of the smoke in a nightclub when I was at my lowest and I’ve never looked back since then.”

The 45-year-old married the Scottish beauty earlier this year after 12 years — and he told Gay he believes he has finally found true happiness. He said: “My wife is still my best friend in the world.

“I still love her dearly. The meaning of life for me is watching your kids grow up and growing (old) with your wife.”

Noel, who has two children with Sara and a 12-year-old daughter Anais with ex-wife Meg Matthews, also told told how he and younger brother Liam, 40, took steps to patch up their long-running row after their mum, Peggy, intervened.

Noel explained: “She never takes sides. Christmas just gone she said, ‘I’ve told him to call you and I’m telling you to call him so it’s about time you spoke’. We exchanged texts on Christmas Day. Liam doesn’t have a phone as he is always losing them so you’ve got to text his missus.”

But Noel, who has found solo success with High Flying Birds, insisted he doesn’t miss playing alongside the volatile singer.

He said: “I’m not wistful and nostalgic. If I hear Oasis songs on the radio I don’t think, ‘Oh God, wouldn’t that be great?’”

The songwriter is proud of his Irish heritage — Peggy is from Charlestown in Co Mayo, while dad Tommy grew up in Duleek, Co Meath — and the family travelled from Manchester on regular holidays.

But Noel told how he no longer speaks to his violent dad, who separated from his mum while he was still a teenager.

He said: “I don’t think he was an alcoholic. I just think he was a bit of a rubbish husband. The 1970s was a tough time in Manchester not only for working class people — but for Irish people with the Troubles.

“There wasn’t a lot of work, but I don’t look back on that time with any regret or sadness. It kind of makes you what you are. After my mam and dad split up we still (saw) him because he only lived about 200 yards up the road.

“My mam never said anything like, ‘You can’t see him’. He still had his own firm and we still did a bit of work with him, but soon after that we kind of became men.

“Then you go off and do your own thing. It’s not shocking for families to become estranged, particularly a family of boys when they start doing their own thing.”

Noel, who was regularly in trouble with the police in his teens, also told how music saved him from a life of crime. He said: “(My mother) kind of seen that me and my other two brothers weren’t bad lads. We come from quite a large council estate in Manchester and we were all lads and my dad was working away and we never really seen him as a father figure.

“You were kind of out there in the Wild West almost and it was all going on... crime and drugs and all sorts of thing.

“I am just glad I got through the other side and found something in music that took me in a different direction.”

During the early days, Oasis became famous for their hard-partying rock-and-roll lifestyle. They drank, took drugs, fought, and made celeb friends such as Mick Jagger, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.

But Noel told how he decided to put an end to his wild ways after waking up from a bender to find his house full of strangers. He explained: “There came a point for me in 1998 when I went to bed one night thinking, ‘This is the greatest thing ever. I am living the dream. I’m like the new Keith Richards’.

“I woke up the next morning and thought, ‘This is boring, I hate all these people’. I’ve never done it since.”

Blues supporter Noel also told veteran broadcaster Gay, 78, how all his dreams came true this year when Man City finally won the Premier League in May.

He smiled: “It means everything, I’ve been supporting that team since I was five or six. For 40 years I haven’t seen them do anything really.

“I wouldn’t give up my kids or my family for City winning the League but I’d give up a few No1s, for sure. I have had nine so I’d give up about four of those.”

Noel Gallagher's Children Are His "Best Friends"

Noel Gallagher's children are his ''best friends''.

The 'If I Had a Gun...' hitmaker - who has daughter Anais, 12, with ex-spouse Meg Matthews and sons Donovan, five, and 23-month-old Sonny with his wife Sara MacDonald - wishes his kids didn't have to grow up and find pals of their own, because they are so close.

He said: ''When I'm at home, Sara will sometimes take the kids up to Scotland to see her folks and for about 12 hours, it's like living the dream. After that, a switch goes in your head, 'Oh I'm bored now, I want the kids here,' because as daft and as mad as they are, they're my best friends, all of them, and I do miss them when they go away.'

''It's my lad's first day at primary school and it was like, 'Aww that's it now, he's going to have his mates. He'll come home and say he wants to support Tottenham and I'll have to throw him in the canal. He's going to have his mates and these are going to be peers he'll have the rest of his life.' It's mental that stage.

''I just want them to stay like this forever. But they've got to grow up and be whatever they're going to be.''

Despite his closeness to his kids, 'Married with Children' singer Noel insists he isn't an over-protective dad because he doesn't want them to grow up to be ''brats''.

The former Oasis guitarist told Q magazine: ''My kids have got to work themselves around my life, not the other way. That's how kids become brats, if you're there staring at them all the time going, 'Are you alright?'

''Dad's a rock star, know what I mean? He could be a f***ing square like all your mates' dads.''

Noel Gallagher Believes His Cat Is A Reincarnation Of Alfred Hitchcock

Noel Gallagher apparently believes his cat Boots in a reincarnation of Hollywood legend Alfred Hitchcock.

A friend of the former Oasis guitarist said: "He is convinced the cat is a reincarnation of him because of the shadow he casts on the wall.

He wants to know if it is possible for his cat to have lived another life like humans."

Manchester City fan Noel made the startling revelation on Talksport’s underrated Andy Goldstein show and his pal said: “Boots really belongs to his wife Sara and Noel knows he will take some stick if he does hire an 'animal regressionist' but thinks it may have some comedy value.”

Noel Gallagher: My Wife Got Me Hooked On Bird’s Fags

After revealing he snubbed an approach by Strictly Come Dancing, Noel Gallagher revealed he’s hooked on ‘bird’s’ fags after capitulating to wife Sarah’s demands.

The self-conscious 45-year-old told all when he turned up to the Isle of Wight Festival yesterday to play with his High Flying Birds.

He explained to Absolute Radio: ‘When I met her, she smoked Marlboro Lights and I smoked Benson & Hedges, and she made me change to Marlboro Lights because she reckons Bensons were bad for me. And then do you know what she did? She gave up smoking.

‘So now I smoke bird’s fags and she’s the picture of health.’

Noel’s girlie turn came after he confirmed he’d knocked back the chance to learn a little rumba.

‘I did get offered to do that,’ he confirmed. ‘Yeah, with the best will in the world, no thanks, you know?’

Meanwhile, despite owning a Godlike Genius award Gallagher taunted the other celebs who used speedboats and helicopters to get to the Isle. He said: ‘It looks so undignified when you turn up in a lifejacket. All windswept, like a dog that’s had its head out of the car window for 45 minutes. Just get on the ferry with the people.’

Flying high with his new project, Gallagher said an Oasis reunion was a long time off.

The If I Had A Gun singer said: ‘Funnily enough, I spoke to Gem yesterday. I’m just getting on with it, I’m so busy I don’t really have the chance. It’s been so successful so far.’

Is Noel Gallagher Planning On Taking Two Years Off?

Noel Gallagher is planning two years off when he finishes touring with his High Flying Birds, on his wife’s orders.

The musician said that wife Sara wants him to have time at home to be with their children after what will have been a year on the road.

Noel also revealed that he has softened his war with brother Liam.

The pair now communicate through their peacemaker mum Peggy and Noel is back on speaking terms with ex-Oasis bandmate Gem Archer.

Noel, 44, said: “It’s a happy camp at the moment because the record has been really well received. It is selling like hot cakes in England.“We can’t get rid of them fast enough. I did not expect it.

“I’m going to tour the a*** out of it until the wheels fall off. Then I’m going to indulge my wife for a year or two.”

The band will be at this summer’s festivals across Europe before Noel’s break.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Fifty Two

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Yes comrades . . . so, Sao Paolo.

Had a press conference early doors. Bit awkward to start with. It livened up though. It actually ended with my interpreter and a journalist just having a chat down their respective mic's!!

The show was fucking mega. What a spectacle. The crowd (or some of them at least) were waving yellow and green balloons as we took to the stage. Looked mega. Great atmosphere. Too much atmosphere as a matter of fact. Not sure if anyone was actually listening . . . they was sure feeling it though. Could barely hear myself sing. I don't mind telling you I lost it in a couple of places. Think it was being broadcast live on the Internet and all!! Lots of very amusing banners, signs, placards etc . . . here's but a few examples:

NOEL..WILL YOU MARRY ME? (this kind of thing has now become standard)

WE LOVE SARA!! (aww..so do I and she'd have been most pleased by that one)

FIRE TIM SMITH AND HIRE ME!! (very funny . . . if you're not Tim Smith . . . whoever that is?)

And my personal favourite . . . and this is not a joke . . .

NOEL..I AM PREGNANT BY YOU!!!!! (???????and it was held up by a boy!! Reminds me of a similar sign my wife held up over breakfast a couple of years ago!!)

Strange cat's these Brazilians . . . anyway onto Rio!!

See you there or maybe not.

Noel Gallagher Will Speak To Liam - When He Isn't So "Busy"

Noel Gallagher will speak to Liam - when he isn't so "busy".

The High Flying Birds star quit Oasis in 2009 following a back-stage fight in Paris, and hasn't spoken to his brother since.

Libel lawsuits ensued on both sides and while those have since been dropped, Noel insists he has no plans to make friends just yet - much to mum Peggy's disappointment.

He said: "There is no contact of any significance, to my mother's disgust. But we are big boys now. She can't tell us what to do forever.

"It's not the last time I'm ever going to speak to him. Of course I'm going to speak to him again but I'm busy."

In an interview with BBC4, the 44-year-old Don't Look Back in Anger hitmaker - who has daughter Anais, 12, from his first marriage to Meg Mathews and sons Donovan, four, and 17-month-old Sonny with wife Sara MacDonald - admits he didn't know how to be a good father until recently.

He explained: "I had never seen a good example of any parenting until I met Sara, who is an incredible mother to the children.

"I have learnt so much from her as she has great parents. Her mum and dad have been married for 150 years or something and they are still together. And she takes that and brings that to our children.

"I come from a dysfunctional family. I'm good with the kids now but at first, with my older daughter, I didn't have the tools instinctively."

Talking about his own estranged father Thomas, who separated from his mum when Noel was 15, he added: "I don't think of my father at all. It's his loss, not mine."

Noel Gallagher: Wife Taught Me How To Be Better Dad

Rock star Noel Gallagher has revealed he struggled with fatherhood and family – until second wife Sara MacDonald taught him how real families work.

The ex Oasis star, whose dad left mum Peggy to bring up him and brothers Liam and Paul, admits he didn't know how to parent.

Speaking in BBC4's Mark Lawson Talks To Noel Gallagher, the dad of three said: "I had never seen a good example of any parenting until I met Sara, who is an incredible mother to the children."

Noel has two sons with Sara — Donovan, four, and Sonny, 17 months — and daughter Anais, 12, with first wife Meg Mathews.

He added: "I have learnt so much from her as she has great parents. Her mum and dad have been married for 150 years or something and they are still together. And she takes that and brings that to our children.

Noel Gallagher On Manchester, Oasis And More

Absolute Radio’s Pete Mitchell spoke to Noel Gallagher in an exclusive interview as part of a 2-hour documentary special to air on digital stations Absolute Radio 00s on Wednesday 14th March from 6pm and Absolute Radio 90s on Thursday 22nd March from 9pm. The man, recently crowned Godlike Genius at the NME awards revealed just how important his hometown was in shaping his career, explaining that:

“Manchester, as a musician, is a great place to grow up because you’ve got everything you need is there; little venues, big venues, nightclubs, or you had then nightclubs, music shops, if you needed a bass player you can get one, it’s got a musical history, it had great DJs at Piccadilly Radio, yourself being one”

Noel’s critically acclaimed album High Flying Birds has flown off the shelves both physically and digitally and Noel explains that he was confident that it would do well:

“I expect greatness from myself. So when people are saying ‘Wow, this is amazing’ and it’s selling, I don’t feel very proud of myself, I think that’s what I should be doing anyway, and I’m quite critical of myself, but, by the same rule, it’s great, I’ve got to say, but I kind of knew it would be well received because I’ve made so many records in the past and I knew that this collection of songs was a good collection of songs, if nothing else, you know.”

Noel tells Pete how he isn’t chasing success anymore and only really makes music now to please wife Sara:

“There was a point in the 90s and in the early 2000s where I was obsessed with success, do you know what I mean, and chasing the big hits and all that, but I’ve had enough of that now. Like I say, I don’t make records to be number one in the charts, but when it happens it’s great. I make them because, you know, my wife won’t let me sit round the house for more than 11 months, as has now become apparent.”

Noel talks about his creative process when it comes to writing:

“Sometimes I can write five songs in a row, very quick, over like a five week period, and then sometimes I go months and months without writing anything, and that’s when I used to get a bit edgy and nervous and like ‘Oh, I’ll just write something’. I’ve learned now to just let it find me, and I don’t know what it is. There’s no special room that I go to, I’ve not even got a music room in my house, my kids have taken over my house and are slowly demolishing it, and I don’t even have a music room. I don’t have a place where I keep all my notes or anything like that, do you know what I mean, it’s purely inspiration, my whole thing is pure inspiration, it’s just ‘There it is’.”

Noel reflects on the success of Definitely Maybe:

Well that record is just a phenomenon that’s just… you know, to think that when I was writing those songs in a bedsit, a council bedsit in Manchester in 1991, ’92, that those songs, 20 years later, would still mean as much, not to people in England, but you take that for granted. I’ve just been out to Australia and Singapore, kids, you know what I mean, who wouldn’t have been born then, Cigarettes and Alcohol means the same to then as it did to me then, and that is an amazing thing, and I don’t know why that is. You know, I’d love to say it’s because I’m a genius and all that, which quite evidently I am, but it’s just a magical thing that we were all involved in and long may it continue. It’s just a great… I love that record.

Listen to Noel Gallagher “The Boy From Burnage” on Absolute Radio 90s on Thursday 22nd March from 9pm.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Forty Two

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Yes..well been mad busy. Lot's to tell. So . . . where were we? Barcelona right?

The trip from Barcelona to Paris was uneventful as you would imagine. Landed in the rain and rushed across town to sit in a cold room for 3 hours waiting to do some bizarre tv show where me and 6 other French people occupied some kind of rustic dining table for a casual chat while they ate desert!! For real!!!!! As you can imagine it was a bit awkward. Me . . . not knowing the lingo had to wear an ear piece what had an interpreter translating the conversation into my lug-hole. Still had no fucking idea what they were on about.

The gig in Paris was great. It was in a place called Grand Rex Theatre. Incredible upholstery!! The seats would most definitely have been stolen had it been in England!! 2 of that band The Strokes were there . . . Fab and Albert to be exact. I ain't seen them for long time..cool cats man.

Had a brilliant night out after.stumbled into an empty restaurant at fuck knows what time to catch 2 french dudes - one on piano and one on the guitar - playing that song "harvest moon" by Neil Young. What followed was mega. They started taking requests. . . well at least I think they did . . . and before you know it it was 5am!! They went through every genre of music I've ever heard of!! 50's,60's,70's,80's . . . they stopped at the 90's though thankfully. My lovely good lady wife kept them on their little French toes with a barrage of 80's demands what peaked with "the wham rap"!!! It really was fucking mega. Needless to say the next day was spent nursing a rather sore head. Well worth it though. I LOVE PARIS!

So...last night's gig here in Hamburg was ok . . . not bad . . . if I'm being honest I was still feeling it a little bit from Paris. Someone - they were definitely german - kept shouting out, clear as day, in between songs . . . "KEVIN KEEGAN!!!!"
??????????????? Indeed.

Off to Berlin just now.

Gotta go.

ONWARDS.
