Oasis' 'Supersonic Documentary Could Have Been Seven Hours Long

Mat Whitecross also says documentary will show fans what the Gallagher brothers are really like.

The director of new Oasis documentary Supersonic has said that the film could easily have been over seven hours long.

It is due for release on October 2 and documents the Manchester band's rise to fame from 1993-96.

"It [Supersonic] could have easily been over seven hours long," Whitecross explained. "We did 12 interviews with Noel and the same with Liam. We did about 20 hours with both of them. We'd talk to Noel and Liam and it was like we'd created a conversation between them even though they weren't in the same room.

"Noel was like 'I don't want it to be a bunch of grey haired middle aged rockers talking about how good things were in the old days'. But we kept it in the present by doing these audio interviews."

He also said despite the ongoing feud between the Gallagher brothers, they were both very honest about each other during the interviews.

“We did separate screenings for Noel and Liam," he explained. "But in the interviews with Liam I said 'Well obviously you started the band' and Liam would say 'Yeah but Noel would never admit to that' and I would go 'No that's what Noel told me last week' and he'd be like 'Really? Alright, OK'.

"I realised they were both trying to be as honest as possible about it. Noel was very open. It's pretty amazing some of the things he says about Liam. He said Liam was better looking than me and funnier than me and he wore better clothes than me but he wants my talent."

Whitecross also argued that film will present a true depiction of the Gallagher brothers.

He added: "For whatever reason because of all the tabloid bullshit and because of the caricature of them that was made through the years people have forgotten what they're really like and that was one of the things we really wanted to set the balance right and just go look they're smart, passionate fucking funny people who deserve to be right up front alongside The Rolling Stones, The Beatles all these people.

"The caricature that persists is that Noel is the cold, calculating talented one and Liam is the chaotic one but I think there's so much more to them than that. I think there's a lot introspection in Liam. He's incredibly perceptive about his own character and his weaknesses. He's got an amazing psychedelic mind and I think if you get in there some of the stuff he says is like poetry. You have to write everything down. It's fucking brilliant."

Noel Gallagher On Being An Independent Artist

Noel Gallagher reckons he makes less money and wins fewer awards as an independent artist with his band High Flying Birds then he did when he was signed to a record label.

But according to the co-founder of Britpop band Oasis, he's enjoying working as an independent artist.

With Oasis, who signed to Creation Records in the UK and had a worldwide deal with Sony, Gallagher said he didn't like the people he had to deal with at the labels.

"I enjoy not working with people in record labels ... it's nice to get away from that mob," Gallagher said on The Project on Tuesday night.

The British musician was speaking from Byron Bay where he performed over the weekend at Bluesfest.

Last year, his album Chasing Yesterday with his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds reached number one in the UK, but in typical sardonic fashion he explained how he doesn't make much money or get many accolades for his music now.

"I enjoy the lack of money that I make. I enjoy the lack of record sales. I also enjoy the lack of recognition and the lack of awards that I receive because quite frankly my mantelpiece was chokka-block with the f*****g things, it's nice to take a backseat," he said.

By the time they split in 2009, Oasis had sold about 70 million records - they had also won a total of 37 awards for their music, including Brits, MTV Europe Music Awards and NME Awards.

When the band first broke onto the scene in the 1990s they were purveyors of the Britpop genre along with bands such as Blur and Pulp. It was a genre inspired by retro pop bands such as The Beatles and comprised of standard rock group instrumentation - guitars, drums and lead singer.

In the current production-led climate, it could be difficult to see where Oasis would fit in. Their closest comparison today might be Coldplay who work with dance producers such as Avicii, or The Arctic Monkeys who aren't afraid to mix it up with some psychedelic influences.

However, Gallagher reckons there would still be a place for them musically.

"There'd be some major differences the way the music business is - the music will remain timeless so I think it'd be the same but we'd probably have worse clothes and less of a drug habit, probably," he said.

While he's been performing in Australia with his solo project, he still plays Oasis hits on stage.

"I give the people what they want as long as I can play what I want, everybody goes home happy," he said.

Gallagher has three more gigs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth before he flies out for a European and US tour that brings him right up until the end of August.

He's still playing gigs after more than 20 years in the music business, and he knows that's something to be grateful for, regardless of what material from what period of his career he's performing.

"To see people reacting to new songs is great and all the old stuff is great and I'm just glad to be still doing it at my age quite frankly," he said.

Liam Gallagher Denies Retirement Rumours

A spokesperson for Liam Gallagher has denied that the former Oasis frontman has retired from music, following recent tabloid reports.

The Sun reported on Monday (March 7) that Gallagher had revealed the news to a fan in London, quoting the star as saying: "I am retired now. I can write 25 songs but all of them will be shit".

Gallagher recently made similar comments while live-tweeting the Brits. He wrote: "Music in the UK has been abducted by massive cunts... Thank fuck I got out when I got out".

However, Gallagher's press representative has now dismissed the retirement rumours, telling NME: "In true tabloid style it's not true".

Gallagher recently ruled out the possibility of him releasing a solo album. "Solo record, are you fucking tripping dickhead?" Gallagher wrote on Twitter, saying he would not release solo material as he is "not a cunt".

He also made headlines last week after actor Sacha Baron Cohen claimed that he once threatened to "stab him in the eye".

In a response issued to NME, Gallagher's press representative said that the star wanted to "clarify that it wasn't just the one eye, it was both".

Earlier today, Liam Gallagher paid tribute to the late Beatles producer George Martin, who has died at the age of 90.

New Oasis Documentary Will Feature Infamous Newcastle Gig

An upcoming documentary on Oasis will feature a 'riot' that broke out at their Newcastle show in 1994. Were you there?

They were the biggest band of the 1990s, fronted by two Mancunian brothers who were as opinionated as they were talented.

Now, a major new documentary on Oasis, the rock’n’roll band that defined a generation, is under production and the makers want your help in recalling a notorious Newcastle gig in 1994.

Hannah Green, who is working on the documentary, said: “It will cover their beginnings in the basement of the Boardwalk to their landmark concerts at Knebworth in 1996. We have the full support of Noel and Liam Gallagher.

“We’re currently after footage or photographs from the band’s infamous gig on August 9 at the Riverside, where supposedly a member of the audience threw a punch at Noel and a massive riot ended up breaking out.

“We are able to pay for any material used”.

Oasis were at the forefront of the Britpop movement, which heavily evoked music from three decades earlier by groups like The Beatles, The Who and The Small Faces.

During 1995-96, the group were at the peak of their powers, scoring classic hit singles like Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger, while their album Definitely Maybe was one of the finest of the decade.

The Gallagher brothers were, though, fond of the odd feud – falling out with each other, Brtipop rivals Blur, and Take That’s Robbie Williams, among others, all of which was meat and drink to the daily tabloids.

Back on August 9, 1994, Oasis were a relatively unknown, up-and-coming indie band when a brawl at a low-key Newcastle gig made headlines in the Chronicle.

The band were making their third appearance at the city’s Riverside club, and the football-related banter between the Manchester City-supporting Liam and Noel Gallagher and Newcastle United fans in the audience was ramping up the tension.

All hell broke loose when an audience member tried to climb on stage, then stumbled on to Noel, causing the guitarist to accidentally hit himself with his instrument, causing a nasty gash on his face.

(It was later suggested Noel was more concerned his guitar might be damaged - an instrument that had once belonged to The Who’s Pete Townshend and was on loan from Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr).

The band stormed off stage with singer Liam returning, brandishing a microphone stand, and snarling “no-one hits our kid” as the crowd chanted “soft as *****”.

The Daily Mail reported the show had descended into an ‘orgy of violence’, while the Chronicle also covered the incident.

We reported: “A band tipped for stardom were caught up in a brawl with their audience as they kicked off their national tour in Newcastle.

“Noel Gallagher, from the pop group Oasis, needed stitches after being attacked on stage at the Riverside.

“Others from the five-strong band, which includes his brother Liam, piled on top of the man and allegedly hit him, before the audience joined in.”

Our report went on to say the band had refused to return after getting only five numbers into the show and fans had swarmed the stage. The group managed to escape to their waiting van, but were besieged by chanting fans. Oasis later issued a statement, apologising for ending the show early, but said that Gallagher had been bleeding heavily.

“The actions of one lunatic have ruined it for the rest,” the statement read.

In the years after the brawl, Oasis returned successfully to the region on several occasions and they remain hugely popular.

They split in 2009 after increasing acrimony between the Gallagher brothers and formed separate bands, but you wouldn’t rule out the pair sharing a stage together again one day.

Did you see Oasis at Newcastle Riverside on August 9, 1994? Do you have any footage or pictures from the gig? Or do you have any interesting Oasis or Riverside memorabilia from this time?

The producers of the upcoming documentary will pay for content used.

Noel Gallagher Says There Will Never Be Another Oasis

Never one to shy away from telling people like it is, Britpop icon Noel Gallagher has been giving his opinion on the state of music industry ahead of his headline performance at T in the Park on Sunday.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the former Oasis songwriter in chief was reflecting on his first appearance at the festival, some 21 years ago.

“When we were young we were a lot cooler than this generation, let’s put it that way,” said Gallagher. “Forget this generation, they’re lost. Imagine the next generation. Can you? I can’t. I’d rather not.”

The 48 year-old went onto discuss the issues with record label control and stated his belief that there would never be another band like Oasis as a result.

“There won’t be another music revolution because commerce and big business doesn’t allow revolution.Taylor Swift will still be going in 20 years but she’ll be called something else. She won’t be going. It’ll be someone else. But there will never be another Oasis, I can tell you that. Never in a million years. Five lads from a council estate who wanted to be as big as the Beatles and were big enough to say it. Never.”

Despite numerous rumours since the band split up in 2009, Gallagher Snr has always denied there will be an Oasis reunion, saying that they would only ever get back together for the money. Despite the split, his solo act, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, has been hugely successful. His two albums have been generally well received and the latest effort, Chasing Yesterday, released in February, is the biggest selling vinyl of the year so far.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds headline the main stage at T in the Park on Sunday and is one of 15 acts we’ve picked out to watch at this year’s festival.

Liam Gallagher On His Brother Noel, John Lennon And Paul McCartney

Liam Gallagher thinks his brother Noel is "a bit nice".

The former Oasis rocker sees a lot of similarities between himself and "twisted" John Lennon, whereas he thinks his older sibling and ex-bandmate is more like Beatles bassist Sir Paul McCartney.

He told NME: "I'd say both Lennon and McCartney were very different, but both great.

"I like Lennon's stuff more because it's a bit more beautiful and a bit more mad. McCartney's was like Noel, he's a bit nice. Lennon was more twisted and I like that s**t."

Noel Gallagher On 'The First Time' On BBC Radio 6 Music This Sunday

BBC Radio 6 Music
Sunday 15th March at 13:00 (UK Time)
Listen live here.

Everyone knows the story. As the creative force behind Oasis, Noel Gallagher changed the face of British music. Their sound and his songs swept the nation up in their wake and helped inspire a whole genre, but will far outlive the world of Britpop that they helped define.

Now, as he prepares to release his second solo album Chasing Yesterday, Noel sits down for a special interview with Matt Everitt to kick off the new season of The First Time. Here Noel talks about his very first exposure to music (Country and Irish bands like Dermot Hegarty and Big Tom and The Mainliners as it happens) and how the anthems of the football terraces inspired his childhood.

He also chats about the impact of The Sex Pistols, The Dammed, Leo Sayer (honestly) and his passion for the holy trinity of The Smiths, The Stone Roses and The Jam (and he may well mention The Beatles)

He also looks back on the very first Oasis rehearsal ("Mindblowing") and gig ("Great"), the difficult birth of their debut album Definitely Maybe and the all important issues of what length your guitar strap should be. There's also his memories of meeting Paul McCartney (they shared a meditation bubble), what it's like becoming so famous that when you get a haircut it ends up on the front pages of the tabloids ("the whole business is one huge joke") as well as his realization that Oasis had come to the end of the road and his feelings about stepping up to become a solo artist.

And, as you would expect, he's as charismatic, honest and funny as ever.

Noel Gallagher Says Youth Culture Is Pretty Much Non-Existent

Noel Gallagher is almost as famous for his sharp tongue as he is his music career. Celebrities from Ed Sheeran to Alex Turner have found themselves in the singer’s firing line in recent weeks, but now US technology giant Apple and “middle-aged Americans” are the next victims.

“Apple came along and destroyed the f****** world. Youth culture is pretty much non-existent anymore,” he told Square Mile magazine.

“It’s this whole youth culture which is based on gadgets. It’s like Apple are driving youth culture, not youth culture driving the world.”

The 47-year-old continued: “Culture has stagnated because of conservative middle-aged Americans thinking, ‘F****** hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could just f****** do this.’ And it’s like, no it wouldn’t be cool. No.”

The former Oasis singer – whose new band Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was recently announced as a headliner for this year’s Latitude Festival – has 14-year-old daughter, Anais, from his first marriage to Meg Matthews.

Talking about her generation growing up in a “youth culture which is based on gadgets”, he said: “I’m not going to be some grumpy old fella telling her to put her phone down and saying, ‘Go listen to the Beatles.’ That’s her world. She doesn’t care.

He continued: “If somebody would have said to me when I was 14 about cassettes I would have said, ‘I don’t fucking care.’

“When we were growing up nobody would make you walk through an airport naked just to get on an aeroplane. And there was no 24-hour news, so they have to fill it up with bad shit. So we will always, always hark back to the old world and vinyl records and record shops and all that. 14-year-olds don’t want to hear that. Why would they care?”

Why Noel Is No Longer Chained To The Mirror And The Razor Blade

Barry Egan recalls a lively chat about cocaine with Noel Gallagher almost 20 years ago.

August, 1996, backstage at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork: Noel Gallagher is batting the breeze with me, two hours before he is due to go with his brother Liam and their band in front of 70,000 people.

I asked him what was his view on Oasis as shameless Beatles plagiarists. "I agree with it," he laughed, "most of the time. Because it pisses people off. Everything is derivative of something. Everyone goes on about Oasis not being as innovative as the Beatles but what they fail to realise is up until the album Rubber Soul, the Beatles were derivative of black American music and not being very good at it."

Would he sue over the recent £4,000-a-week-on-cocaine article in the News of the World? "You can't sue over an amount. It's hardly defamation of character, is it?"

Does taking cocaine give your lyrics a new clarity? "I find that when I get really out of my head on drugs," he answered almost academically, " I tend to write songs like Supersonic."

Was Live Forever written on cocaine? "No. Morning Glory is about the mundanity of cocaine conversations, because it's all bullshit at the end of the day. Then you wake up with a bad head and you've solved f**k all. I suppose that directly inspired the line 'chained to the mirror and the razor blade'."

Presumably he'd agree with the saying: 'Cocaine is God's way of telling you you're earning too much money'? "Yeah, I would!" Noel hooted. "But I was doing coke when I was on the dole anyway." How much was he getting on the dole? "About £60 every two weeks." And you're getting about two million for these Cork shows? "Oh, yeah," he smiled.

Almost two decades later, Noel Gallagher is possibly not getting two million for his solo show at the 3Arena in Dublin this Wednesday. The 47-year-old hasn't lost his million-dollar wit. Not least when Noel recollected the "disgusted text" he received from his pal Paul Weller when U2's Songs Of Innocence album came out free on iTunes: "Why do I have their fucking album on my computer? You're a mate of Bono's - you must have known!"

Noel also recalled that when his wife Sara picks up something unpleasant in the kitchen sink, she will admonish him thus, "There is a dishwasher here. Can you not do anything?" To which he will reply: "Can you play the guitar? No, you can't, thank you very much, jog on."

Noel's second solo album Chasing Yesterday is jogging along very nicely, too. My one quibble with the new record is that Noel hides himself in his songs. Intriguingly, in an interview with Sabotage Times in 2013, Noel was asked did having an allegedly violent father contribute to his apparent reluctance to reveal himself in song.

His answer was revealing in a way his lyrics rarely are: "All the songs that I like, they're not written by songwriters pulling the scabs off themselves. All John Lennon's shit about his mother; I'm not interested in it, doesn't mean anything to me. All these songs about personal torment, how can it? How can Mother mean anything to anybody apart from John Lennon? It can't, because he's singing it about his mother, not mine."

"That's just my perception of it. It's never come out in my music because (a) it's nobody's f**king business; and (b) it doesn't make for great music.

"For instance," he continued, "Waterloo Sunset [by The Kinks]. The sun setting at Waterloo Station belongs to everybody. The ... father I had belongs to me. I really wouldn't want to share that or put it into a song."

What Noel has put into song is his apparent nostalgia for Manchester: 'Taking you back to the town where I was born. . .' he sings on While The Song Remains The Same, hinting at a possible move home.

"We did think about it before our second son [Sonny] came along," Noel said recently. "I wouldn't mind. My mum's still there, still in the same house. But I feel sorry for her; some guy shot a woman in the face yesterday in the middle of the street as she begged for her life."

Noel Gallagher On Producing Work More Boring Than James Blunt

Noel Gallagher has dismissed the idea of drawing from his own life when looking for songwriting inspiration, saying such a strategy would produce work "more boring than James Blunt".

Gallagher was talking to BBC Radio 2 DJ Edith Bowman (who was filling in for Dermot O'Leary) earlier this afternoon (January 31) about his forthcoming album 'Chasing Yesterday', and described the set as lacking a cohesive narrative.

When asked if he considered writing about his own experiences, Gallagher said: "If I wrote songs about my own life, they would be more boring than James Blunt. If that's at all possible, which we all know, of course, it's not."

The former Oasis guitarist was also asked if he had allowed himself to reflect on the past when the band's debut album 'Definitely Maybe' celebrated its 20 year anniversary last year.

"It's an amazing thing to have been involved in a band that people took to their hearts," said Gallagher, who went on to reveal he gets asked about the possibility of an Oasis reunion at least twice a week. Paraphrasing his response to fans who ask, he said: "I never got to see The Beatles, and I'm a bigger fan of The Beatles than you are of my band."

Speaking to NME for his recent cover story, Gallagher described 'Chasing Yesterday' as being full of "songs that make you kind of punch in the air while crying a little bit".

Noel Gallagher Quit Cocaine Because Of Pyramids, Aliens And The Beatles

Noel Gallagher has confessed he stopped taking cocaine in 1998 because he'd grown tired of ''talking about pyramids, aliens and The Beatles''.

Noel Gallagher stopped taking cocaine because he got ''bored'' of talking about aliens.

The 'In The Heat Of The Moment' singer has revealed that although he still smokes cigarettes and enjoys drinking alcohol, he no longer takes the Class A drug because he's ''bored'' of having bizarre conversations.

The 47-year-old rocker admits he used to spend hours ''talking about pyramids, aliens and The Beatles and who shot JFK [US President John F. Kennedy]'' at his nightly parties.

He said: ''I had exhausted every avenue of conversation. I had parties at all of my houses every night. I just assumed that is what you did. That is what is expected of you. That is why it is the greatest business in the world.''

Despite confessing to once taking cocaine in Queen Elizabeth's toilet at Downing Street, the former Oasis star claims he didn't find it difficult to kick the habit back in 1998.

Speaking on an episode of 'The Jonathan Ross Show', which is to air on Saturday (22.11.14), he explained: ''It was easy to give up. I am very disciplined and I just thought one afternoon, 'I am bored now'. And I thought, 'This is against the law.' ''

But Noel - who says he will ''never give up the cigarettes and the booze'' - insists he won't warn his three children off of drugs.

Speaking about his two sons Donovan, seven, and Sonny, four, with wife Sara MacDonald and his 14-year-old daughter Anais from his marriage to Meg Matthews, he added: ''We plan to let them find their own way in life. If they ever get too close to the edge we will pull them back.

''I would have not liked my parents to preach to me about anything about life.''

Are Oasis Getting Back Together?

Is a Glastonbury reunion part of the Masterplan for battling brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher who want one last chance to shiiiiiiiiine?

It's time to don your parka, practice your monkey walk, and comb your monobrow - Oasis are getting back together, some might say.

Insiders reckon Liam and Noel could be burying the hatchet for a reunion at Glastonbury.

But now insiders reckon that Peggy Gallagher's youngest boys have shaken hands and made up and Oasis are on for a desperate money making much anticipated reunion.

The Sun reports an Oasis insider saying: "Noel and Liam are on speaking terms again so some kind of a reunion could well be a step closer."

They added: "Liam could certainly do with the money. The cash just isn’t rolling in like it used to but his outgoings are bigger than ever...

“Noel doesn’t need the money but it is hard to turn down the buzz of stepping out on the biggest stages in the world, so who could blame him if he eventually changes his mind?

“It is clear he has fallen back in love with Glastonbury and would love to headline that again.”

Glastonbury festival chief Michael Eavis revealed he’s in constant talks with Noel and Liam – who announced Beady Eye had split last month.

Michael, 79, says: “I do talk to Noel and Liam a lot. Wouldn’t it be marvellous for them to relaunch at Glastonbury, now Liam has split from Beady Eye?”

Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, who played guitar in Oasis from 1991-1999 is now in a band with former Smiths' Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke.

Mirror Celeb bumped into him backstage at a Madchester reunion gig for the 50th birthday of Stone Roses axeman Aziz Ibrahim. When we quizzed him about an Oasis reunion Bonehead said he was "sworn to secrecy."

He told us: "I love Beady Eye. I love Noel's High Flying Birds too. But I can't say anything about a reunion.

"I'm sworn to secrecy."

"Besides, I'd be the last person to know."

"But I might offer to come back as band psychiatrist, wear a white coat and drive a bus!"

Oasis, The Killers, The Beatles And More Voted To Have Weirdest Song Lyrics

The Killers fought off competition from the likes of Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift in a competition to find the song with the weirdest lyric.

A survey suggests the line, "are we human or are we dancer?" in the song Human is the most confusing.

Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe placed fifth with the lyric: "Before you came into my life, I missed you so bad".

The top 10 also included Michael Jackson's Earth Song and Champagne Supernova by Oasis.

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers previously revealed the lyric in Human was based on a quote from the author Hunter S. Thompson, "we're raising a generation of dancers".

"I took it and ran," Brandon said. "I guess it bothers people that it's not grammatically correct, but I think I'm allowed to do whatever I want."

The research was carried out by online streaming service Blinkbox Music, which questioned 2,000 adults.

Managing director Mark Bennett said: "It's true that song lyrics are sometimes as crazy as a box of frogs, but then that's show business. It would be a really boring world if everything was logical and made sense."

Almost two-fifths of those surveyed said they do not usually understand the words they hear in pop songs.

Bonehead On The Definitely Maybe Re-Release

It’s been two decades since Oasis forged the soundtrack to a generation with all-conquering debut Definitely Maybe.

The sound of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Slade and The Stone Roses rolled into one glorious masterpiece is being rereleased this week.

Noel and Liam Gallagher haven’t been overly excited by the reissue but one former member was well up for it.

Ex-Oasis guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs told me: “I was really excited when I heard it was going to happen.

“The masters arrived at my house and it was the first time in years that I’ve sat down and listened to it from start to finish.

“It really brought back tons of memories and feelings.”

Part of the album’s success was finding the right producers, says Paul, 48.

He said: “We struggled at first, and I think we had the wrong producer and the wrong studio and the wrong approach to recording.

“Then we went to Sawmills and Mark Coyle, our front-of-house engineer, properly understood how we worked and got us down as a live band. It sounded like us and we got it right.

“We captured a feeling and our sound.”

Bonehead has his favourite moments from the album.

He said: “I might not think of a song for a while and then I’ll hear Rock ’n’ Roll Star or something, but broadly it’s Slide Away.

“I think it’s the most passionate vocal Liam’s ever done.” Bonehead quit the band in 1999 but he has no regrets.

He said: “It wasn’t a decision I came to overnight, I thought about it for ages.”

But he has got lots of memorabilia to reflect on those days.

He laughed: “I’ve got the fire surround, the chair, the ornaments, ash trays, all sorts from the album cover.”
