Oasis 18-1 To Play Gig In UK This Year After Brotherly Spat

Liam and Noel Gallagher have discovered happiness is having a close-knit family - in a different city.

In my younger days sibling disputes invariably ended with my brother putting me in a headlock and smacking about the bonce with his free hand.

Things, I'm glad to say, are much better now. Our disputes are still resolved that way - it's just that I'm living further away now.

Oasis and Manchester City are the only things the Gallaghers have in common so life has dealt them a cruel blow, especially the one who married Patsy Kensit. Now, after a lengthy tour, they have been reminded just what it is they don't like about each other. With my brother it was his bed-wetting, and the fact he had the top bunk.

Sunday's gig at the V Festival was called off because of Liam's laryngitis and, amid rumours Oasis are to split, Paddy Power offer 18-1 for the band to play a UK gig before this year is out.

The brothers are 50-1 to fight each other in a celebrity boxing match. You'd have to back Noel as Liam has a peculiar habit of standing with his arms behind his back.

The Enemy's Tom Clarke: 'Cut Liam Gallagher Some V Festival Slack'

The Enemy's Tom Clarke has asked fans to cut Oasis' Liam Gallagher some slack after the Manchester band cancelled their headline slot at the Chelmsford leg of the event yesterday (August 23) due to the singer contracting laryngitis.

Clarke, whose band played on the 4Music stage at V Festival, said he believed the illness was legitimate – pointing out that Liam and his bandmate brother Noel have had a challenging relationship for some time.

"If they’ve cancelled it's for a legitimate reason," the frontman of the Coventry trio, who recently supported Oasis, told Absolute Radio. "I hope everyone cuts him a bit of slack and doesn't whinge about it, 'cos shit happens."

Speaking about why he was convinced that Liam's ailment was the genuine reason for the cancellation he added: "They've been on tour since forever. I'm pretty sure they've hated each other since the '90s. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have surmounted in Liam not playing V because they've just realised they don't get on with each other.

"They get on with it. They manage to go on stage and play amazing shows, probably the best live band in the world. The fact of the matter is, the lad's probably got a sore throat. Give him a break. Let him have a day off."

MGMT Joined By Liam Gallagher Cut-Out At V Festival

MGMT played a headline tent show at the V Festival last night (August 23), covering Oasis and playing with a cardboard cut-out of the Manchester legends' singer Liam Gallagher on stage.

The gesture was a tribute to Gallagher's band, who had pulled out of a headline slot on the V Stage due to Liam suffering from laryngitis.

On Saturday (August 22) the Brooklyn act had played at the same time as Oasis and had thanked fans for coming to see them despite the competition.

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser opened their set with a version of Oasis' 'Live Forever', with the Liam cut-out placed at the front of the stage. The crowd responded with huge cheers, erupting into leaps and hand-waves when MGMT played their own hit 'Kids' next.

No More UK Oasis Gigs After Band Pull Out Of V Festival

If you were one of the lucky punters at V Fest in Stafford on Saturday, you can now claim the honour of seeing the last ever Oasis gig on British soil.

The Manc legends pulled out of their headline slot at Chelmsford's V last night because frontman Liam has been struck down with viral laryngitis.

The lads still have a few European tour dates left to play, but unless someone offers them silly money to take the stage once more in Britain then I can't see them performing together again.

Thousands at the Essex tear-up were left stunned when the shock news was announced yesterday, and Snow Patrol had to step in.

Earlier this year Noel christened their UK gigs The Summer Of Bigness. Heaton Park, Murrayfield, the Millennium Stadium, Slane Castle and the Wem-ber-lee dates were epic.

But the V festival no-show is a hugely disappointing way for the curtain to come down on a brilliant summer and an unforgettable era for one of the best bands this country has ever produced.

A spokesman for Oasis said: "After a year of being on the road this is the first performance to be lost to a band member's illness, so naturally we are all completely gutted."

And a V spokesman said: "Fans will naturally be disappointed but the artist's health must come first."

It has been a fraught week for the band after Liam launched a bitter attack on Noel in an interview. The singer has also been chipping away at his big brother on Twitter.

As a result, the rumour mill was in overdrive at V last night with talk of a fall-out between the siblings.

The pair watched their beloved Man City edge past Wolves on Saturday, but from different ends of the ground.

Noel then had his photo taken with striker Carlos Tevez before the Gallaghers headed off to Stafford's Weston Park on separate buses.

They played the northern leg of the festival with no hiccups, and Liam even stayed up drinking until 3am.

But later yesterday morning, doctors were called in and diagnosed a dodgy throat.

As much as the brothers want to punch each other's lights out most of the time, they are professionals.

The gig was pulled because Liam's throat genuinely wasn't up to the job.

Like so many brilliant bands before them, Oasis are bowing out on bad terms.

It has been heading this way for a while now, as Noel and Liam grow further apart.

Separate flights, different hotels and very little else in common - friends, interests or personalities. Now Milan at the end of the month looks like it could be the last ever Oasis gig.

I hope the Italians appreciate it.

Fans at V will be hacked off.

Oasis Fans Demand Refund After Band Cancel Gig

Angry Oasis fans were demanding refunds last night.

It's after the group made a last minute decision to cancel their scheduled appearance at the V Festival on Sunday.

The British band had already played to thousands the day before at the Staffordshire leg of the live music event in Weston Park.

They were due to close the gig at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, but pulled out when front man Liam Gallagher came down with Viral Laryngitis.

The 36-year-old had been advised by doctors not to perform.

His spokesperson confirmed he's now resting up and should be fine to get back on the road for the next date of their world tour in Paris.

But it was little comfort to festival goers, many of whom said they'd only bought tickets to see Oasis.

Some were even more annoyed that the Gallagher brothers were spotted on Saturday night watching their beloved Manchester City football team defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers at home.

Snow Patrol Cover Oasis At V

British rockers Snow Patrol ensured they pleased Oasis fans after taking over the group's cancelled headlining slot at U.K. music festival V - by covering the band's greatest hits.

Second headliners Snow Patrol were promoted to the prestigious position of closing the annual event.

But they made sure the Oasis fanbase was catered for - by singing the group's classic hits Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova to the thrilled crowd.

And it seems frontman Gary Lightbody was happy with the reaction from fans, telling the revellers, "Already you're one of the best crowds we've ever played to. It's a dark, dark time but we'll try to shed some light on it."

Stars Blast Oasis No-Show At V

James Morisson has stuck the boot into Oasis, saying they are 'lazy' for pulling out of V.

The Gallagher brothers were forced to pull out of their headlining slot at Chelmsford after Liam was struck down by a sore throat.

But smooth James says the band are letting lots of fans down.

Chatting to Absolute Radio, he said: "Yeah, man, lazy. Lazy. That's what it is.

"I mean obviously everyone's gonna be gutted. Every band's got their reasons for not playing. I've had to pull out of gigs before and yeah, it's not a good feeling. I'm sure in their world they would, course they would rather play. So I don't think it's anything that they can you know, change really.

"It's a shame, definitely and it will be a big gap missed."

But James reckons Snow Patrol will rise to the occasion.

He continued: "I think Snow Patrol are a great band but Oasis are a different crowd, a different style and they've got a lot more you know, they're good to finish the show with."

Jade Goody's widower Jack Tweed was sceptical of claims that front man Liam was ill.

He said: "I'm gutted - I think they're just hungover to be honest."

But Radio One's Edith Bowman insisted the band would not cancel without good reason.

"They're very professional and they wouldn't cancel if they didn't have a valid reason.

"I think Noel might come on stage and do something on his own to surprise the fans."

Singer Paolo Nutini said: "It's the fans I feel sorry for."

London Sunday 23rd August 2009: V Festival organisers regret to share the news with fans that unfortunately tonight’s headlining performance will not go ahead as planned. Unfortunately front man Liam Gallagher is unwell with Viral Laryngitis and has been advised by Doctor’s not to perform at tonight’s event.


Organisers are pleased to be able to announce that Snow Patrol will be filling the headline slot.


An Oasis spokesperson commented: “After a year of being on the road this is the first performance to be lost to a band member’s illness, so naturally we are all completely gutted. Liam is resting up and should be fine to resume the tour next Friday in Paris.”


Festival Director, Bob Angus commented:


"Fans will naturally be disappointed but of course – the artist’s health must come first. The acts on the V Stage are sure to play their set of their lives so fans have a fantastic Sunday night at V Festival, Chelmsford”


Oasis headlined the Weston Park leg of the two day event last night with Las Vegas indie kids The Killers repeating their Chelmsford performance for an eager crowd tonight at the Staffordshire based event.

Oasis Roll Out The Hits At V In Staffordshire

Oasis roll out the hits at V in Staffordshire Liam Gallagher hails 'Biblical' crowd at Weston Park.

The Gallaghers blasted out an impressive set, avoiding the technical problems which beset some of their previous UK shows in the summer, as they performed one of their last gigs in Britain on their 'Dig Out Your Soul' tour.

The band were on fine form, sticking to exactly the same set they rolled out at the Camden Roundhouse last month, leading mass singalongs to 'Live Forever', 'Roll With It' and 'Cigarettes & Alcohol'.

Guitarist Noel Gallagher took over vocal duties early on with 'Waiting For The Rapture' and a stirring rendition of 'Wonderwall' B-side 'The Masterplan'.

As he introduced the track, he joked: "Good evening V Staffordshire. Have you had a good day? Someone just said no then."

Later he paid tribute to fans who had travelled up from his hometown as he launched into 'Half The World Away'.

"This next song is dedicated to anyone here from Manchester," he added. "All of you want to live and stay there."

The band only played three songs from their recent album 'Dig Out Your Soul', instead filling the 90-minute set with many of their greatest hits.

Much of the crowd were in fine voice, belting out all the words to 'Wonderwall'. But the biggest singalong was reserved for Don't Look Back In Anger' as Noel left the whole of the V Stage throng to sing the bulk of the track in unison.

His brother Liam, who was dressed in a long black Pretty Green raincoat, said very little throughout the show apart from at the very end when he declared: "This is the last song. You've been Biblical and we're out of here. I am the fucking walrus."

Noel To Perform 'Falling Down' Remix With Amorphous Androgynos

Noel is set to hook up with the psychedelic band Amorphous Androgynous to perform their epic re-working of 'Falling Down' on September 17th at Matter in London. Their 5-part, 22 minute remix of 'Falling Down' was released earlier in the year as a B-Side to the Oasis single and received great reviews.

Readers of Noel's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' will be familiar with the band as upon finding their album last year he wrote, 'If you're wondering what to ask Santa for x.mas, ask him for an album called "A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind (Vol 1. Space Rock)". It's a compilation album by someone called "The Amorphous Androgynous" (I'd hazard a guess that's a made-up name). I've had it on in the dressing room for a month now. It's one of the best things I've ever, ever heard. Go and find it NOW! It'll blow your tiny little minds.'

This special, one-off performance is to celebrate the release of Amorphous Androgynous' new album 'Vol 2 - Pagan Love Vibrations' which will be available to buy from 26th October.

Classic 70s space-rock pioneers Hawkwind are also set to perform so it's sure to be a very special gig!

Last night? Blinding. Very, very hot. Loud crowd.

Bridlington's like the land that time forgot. Y'know that tune by Morrissey, "Every Day Is Like Sunday"? Surely he wrote it about Bridlington? Nice people though.

Legged it to York straight after the gig with Burning Natty. Had to get an early train back to London in the a.m. Got some family business to take care of.

The York races are on so there was some wonderful sights on the platform. Fat orange birds in ludicrous hats.

Day off today. Heading back up north tomorrow. Going to see City before we smash the V Festival in Stafford.

Thousands Flock To V Festival Sites

Oasis, The Killers, Lily Allen, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are among the acts performing at Virgin Media's V Festival this weekend.

Thousands of festival-goers have already descended upon Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Staffordshire's Weston Park to set up camp ready for two days of live music and partying.

Oasis are set to headline the V Stage in Staffordshire on Saturday night and close the festival in Chelmsford on Sunday night, although Gallagher brothers Noel and Liam recently revealed they are not speaking to each other.

Peter Doherty - renowned for his battle with drug addiction - is due to play a solo acoustic set at the Virgin Media stage in Chelmsford on Saturday night, while soon to be Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon is performing on the 4Music stage on Sunday.

The Enemy are also billed to perform over the weekend, despite their guitarist Andy Hopkins being injured after breaking his heel in a drinking game.

Razorlight, Snow Patrol, Elbow, Pixie Lott and Tinchy Stryder are also among the wide variety of acts on the line-up.

Many celebrities are expected to live it up in the Virgin Media Louder Lounge VIP area in Hylands Park over the weekend, enjoying secret acoustic sets, luxury make-overs and spa treatments.

Doctor Who star David Tennant, Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Bank Job star Jason Statham and singer Charlotte Church are among the names tipped to be on the guest list.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Importance Of Being Idle" is a song on the British rock band Oasis' sixth album, Don't Believe the Truth, written and sung by lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was the second single released from the album in the UK, on August 22, 2005, where it debuted at #1. It was also the first time that Oasis earned two successive #1's in the same calendar year. It was written by Gallagher sometime during the summer of 2004, before the band made their final attempt at recording what would become Don't Believe the Truth. He got the title from the Mark Twain book of the same name which he found whilst cleaning out his garage (it belonged not to him but to girlfriend Sara McDonald.)

Musically, as Noel has commented, the song sounds like tunes from two British bands, The Kinks and The La's. In particular, the sentiment expressed is noticeably similar to The Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" and "Dead End Street", and the use of falsetto for every other verse line recalls The La's "Feelin'". The guitar sound is similar also to The La's b-sides; "Clean Prophet" and "Over". It also is a breakaway from the sound of Oasis's latter albums, especially the straight ahead rock 'n' roll anthems of Heathen Chemistry. The keyboard used on the pre-chorus sections was bought by bassist Andy Bell from the auction website eBay.

Noel has said that the lyrics of "The Importance of Being Idle" are inspired by his own laziness. Some of the second verse, with the reference to begging his doctor for "one more line", seems to be referring to an actual event as this resembles Noel's account of how he gave up cocaine in 1998.

Most reviewers acclaimed the track as one of the highlights of Don't Believe the Truth, which itself was widely praised as a marked return to form. The band mentioned in interviews in June that it would become the second single, after the UK Number One "Lyla". The b-sides are Liam Gallagher's "Pass Me Down the Wine" and Gem Archer's "The Quiet Ones."



The promo film was directed by Dawn Shadforth, (whose previous videos include Kylie Minogue's award-winning "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"). Shadforth's film for "The Importance of Being Idle' starred Welsh actor Rhys Ifans and homages the style of early 1960s kitchen sink drama British films, and is set during the build up to a funeral procession in a northern town, with the extravagant undertakers parading the coffin at the video's climax and Ifans playing the part of a high-kicking funeral director. The video is based on the film and play Billy Liar with Ifans playing the role of Billy. Noel and Liam therefore play Shadrack & Duxbury, the owners of the funeral parlour where Billy works. The rest band (Gem,Andy and Zak) make a brief appearance as lazy workers playing cards in an undertaker's office. It was widely acclaimed at the time as being probably the best video Oasis had ever made, not least by the band themselves, who were said to be very happy with the finished product. The video is very similar in style and concept to the music video for "Dead End Street" by The Kinks.

Q Magazine readers placed the song at #1 in a list of 2005's greatest tracks.

The video for the song was voted the video of the year at the NME Awards.

The song is included on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.
