The Absurd Gallagher Brothers Make For Good TV

The absurd Gallagher brothers make for good TV, writes Natalie Craig.

'It's hard to be modest at times like these so I won't even try . . . You are all shite."

Such is the wisdom of Oasis: the greatest band in the world. Ever. For Liam and Noel Gallagher, there is no disputing this. Last month's Brit award for their outstanding contribution to music just reinforced what the brothers from Manchester already know. They rock.

Oasis: There We Were, Now Here We Are documents the birth of Oasis in the early 1990s, their plague of popularity and the troubled production of their first album, Definitely Maybe. But, director Dick Carruthers avers, this is not just another making-of film.

"It was a straightforward idea: put together a 10th-anniversary DVD of the making of the album," he explains. "But it turned out to be absolutely hilarious. You can hear me laughing in the background all the way through."

The Gallagher brothers intended the DVD as a piece of memorabilia, but their banter made it worthy of prime-time television. "We're not rock stars, we're lads," Noel says, "and we're going to be famous forever."

Carruthers had been working with Oasis for 10 years when he made the 2004 documentary, and considers himself a friend. The former Rolling Stones crew member says his interview style is to "let boys be boys".

"You don't need to turn your phones off and you don't need to say 'silence', then ask a formal question. It never works. I'd say if you want to smoke, smoke; if you want to have a drink, fine."
Carruthers' interview style allows for some incredibly candid comments. Noel is even forthright about his rather derivative guitar style: "I always ended up playing the same guitar solo over different songs, hoping no one will notice."

Then again, he once famously claimed: "I'm not like John Lennon, who thought he was the great Almighty. I just think I'm John Lennon."

But interviews with original band members Mani, Tony and Mark, as well as tour managers and record company executives, confirm a prodigious talent and capacity for hard work.

"The real story that is there is that they were this amazing band straight off the starting blocks and everybody knew it."

Carruthers regards Oasis as the antithesis of every other band around at the time - the "shoe-gazing" set. They were well-rehearsed, productive and very, very loud. Most importantly, they managed to capture the feeling of a generation of young Britons.

"Definitely Maybe made a very defined statement," Carruthers says, "which was 'Look, this place is a shithole, but I'm very grateful and happy to be alive and I feel great about it.' You had Nirvana and grunge saying, 'I hate myself and I want to die,' and Liam singing, 'I want to live forever'."

Carruthers says it was important to him to focus on the music and not the sensational stories that have followed the band since its inception. "Oasis are about their music first and foremost . . . There's been dust-ups, legendarily so in some cases, but nobody would be interested in a couple of lads from Burnage having a dust-up if they weren't these amazing musicians."

Noel and Liam are interviewed separately in the film and are typically abusive. But Carruthers says their antipathy is another misconception.

"They do love each other . . . There's a deep relationships going on there. There may be an element of the classic band thing - the singer would love to be a brilliant guitarist but isn't, and vice versa."

Carruthers has been Oasis' official videographer since 1995 and has seen the way their concerts affect people. "I know I'm biased but I have shot so many Oasis gigs and I've seen the way that the crowd goes nuts. They have got to be one of the greatest bands of all time."

Whether you agree with Carruthers or not, There We Were, Now Here We Are is hilarious rock'n'roll. They may be musical geniuses, they may be circus monkeys, but if there's one thing this documentary confirms, it's that Liam and Noel are ridiculous in the sublime.

"Sure I love Liam," Noel once asserted, "but not as much as I love Pot Noodles."
Oasis: There We Were, Now Here We Are screens Saturday at 10.20pm on SBS (Australia).

On This Day In Oasis History

Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is the fourth studio album by the English rock band Oasis, released on February 28, 2000. In 1999, the year preceding the final release of this album, Oasis had lost two founding members (Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan) and hired a new producer (Mark "Spike" Stent). As a result of these changes, the album's tone was more experimental, with electronica and psychedelic influences. The darker feeling and psychedelic tone of this album is a departure from earlier Britpop-influenced Oasis records.

Songs such as the Indian-influenced "Who Feels Love?", the progressive "Gas Panic!" and the electronica "Go Let It Out" depart from Oasis' old Britpop style. The album was the sixth fastest selling album in UK chart history, selling over 310,000 copies in its first week. Despite becoming their fourth number one album in the UK, it is one of the band's lowest-selling albums, selling only 3 million copies worldwide.

Trivia

The album's title was taken from the words of Sir Isaac Newton: "If I can see further than anyone else, it is only because I am standing on the shoulders of giants". Noel Gallagher saw the quote on the side of a £2 coin whilst in a pub and liked it so much he thought it would be a suitable name for Oasis' new album. He then wrote the name on the side of a cigarette packet whilst drunk. When he awoke in the morning, he realised he had written "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants — A Bum Title".

Due to the departure of Bonehead and Guigsy from the band whilst the album was in production, their parts had to be re-recorded, for legal reasons. Thus, the album only features the Gallagher brothers and Alan White. The sleeve of the album also features them.

The first track, "Fuckin' in the Bushes", is featured on the soundtrack for the film Snatch, and is regularly used in introductions for high-tempo events, due to its quick tempo and loud volume.

In the April 2006 issue of Q magazine, the album was the only Oasis record to feature in a countdown of the "50 worst albums of all time". It was placed at number 46 and described as "the low point of their fallow years", despite the fact that the album had been favourably reviewed in the magazine at its time of release and featured in the magazine's "50 Best Albums of 2000" list. In response to the Q feature, Noel has said, "Even though it wasn't our finest hour, it's a good album born through tough times. I worked harder on that album than anything before and anything since."

A notable B-Side was Lets All Make Believe. This song was on the Go Let It Out single and is said to be one of the bands finest songs. Q Magazine declared it the greatest ever "lost" track in the February 2007 issue and said that if it was on the album it would have carried "an extra star" on the review. Q gave this album 4 Stars back in 2000, meaning an extra star would be 5 stars. So with Lets All Make Believe on the album, according to Q magazine's logic, SOTSOG would have been a 5 star classic.

Demos

A bootleg of demo sessions recorded for this album was leaked onto the internet in January 2000. Most of these songs were recorded by Noel Gallagher with the help of a couple of friends in his home studio at Supernova Heights and at Oasis' own Wheeler End Studios complex. All of the songs, apart from "Little James", were sung by Noel.

The tracklisting of the demo bootleg is:

"Carry Us All"
"Who Feels Love?"
"Fuckin' in the Bushes"
"Little James"
"Gas Panic!
"Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is"
"Sunday Morning Call"
"I Can See a Liar"
"Go Let It Out"
"Roll It Over"
"Revolution Song"
"Where Did It All Go Wrong?"
"(As Long As They've Got) Cigarettes in Hell"
"Just Getting Older"
"Let There Be Love"

At the time of the leak, four songs ("Carry Us All", "Revolution Song", "Just Getting Older" and "Let There Be Love") were not scheduled for release on either the album or as B-sides on the new single "Go Let It Out". These songs were also completely undocumented, apart from "Revolution Song", which had been mentioned by author Paolo Hewitt in his 1999 book Forever the People — Six Months on the Road with Oasis. As such, these four songs had made-up titles based on commonly-repeated phrases mentioned in the songs. Whilst "Carry Us All" and "Just Getting Older" were correctly guessed, the other two tracks were given titles which, in time, would prove to be incorrect. "Revolution Song" was given the title "Solve My Mystery" and "Let There Be Love" was given the title "It's a Crime". "Let There Be Love" was released on Don't Believe the Truth. Because Noel mentioned in a February 23, 2000 interview with Melody Maker magazine that "Revolution Song" had been demoed — but not released because Blur had recently released a similar sounding song — it can be assumed that these titles are correct.

Currently, only one song ("Revolution Song") remains commercially unreleased.

Noel Gallagher is among the celebs at Shockwaves NME Awards Show

An all star audience turned out to see The Gossip play a one-off Shockwaves NME Awards show in London tonight (February 24).

Oasis leader Noel Gallagher, The Horrors frontman Faris Rotter and the cast of E4 teen drama 'Skins' were all watching in the audience at the Astoria as Beth Ditto and co performed a blistering hour set.

Arriving onstage dressed in a grey bin bag, Ditto sang the first few bars of Labelle's famous hit 'Lady Marmalade' before launching into 'Listen Up!'

The singer then whipped off her bag to reveal a skin tight light blue leotard as she went on to sing 'Keeping You Alive'.

Throughout the set, her band performed a series of tracks from their backcatalogue which also included a cover of Aailyah's self-titled hit which Ditto dedicated to the late singer.

The Gossip star, who was celebrating her birthday, bantered with the crowd throughout the show before undergoing a second costume change which saw her don a black outfit.

The biggest cheer of the night came for set closer 'Standing In The Way Of Control'.

Earlier Brazilian dance outfit Bonde Do Role performed a short set after The Violets and Pre opened the night.

I cringe to ever write this post, as if It needs to be said, but some people seem to not have figured out that the NME has never printed an article that doesn't take all the quotes out of context, and put some things in bold that make it seem like people are talking shit about each other!!!

So please no oaisis hate mail, I really don't care...

Marketing is not evil, just trying to express some distaste for the whole shitstorm, but we are still dancing!

we are about 3 steps from WWIII, but life is too short!

George Orwell wrote an essay called "White I write", if you are a writer or musician, I really reccomend picking it up...

my favorite quote

also this little pjassage from a poem he wrote as a young man...

"But girls' bellies and apricots,
Roach in a shadedstream,
Horses, ducks in flight at dawn,
All these are a dream.

It is forbidden to dream again;

Liam and Noel’s brother Paul was unimpressed with reality TV rocker Donny Tourette's attempts to get in with the Gallagher clan.

Oasis frontman Liam is the Towers Of London singer’s hero and he made a beeline for Paul on Thursday when he saw him at a gig. But it didn’t go down well. Paul ranted: “He wants to be Liam but he’s just a posh t**t. He aint no star. And that whole Big Brother thing — a load of s**t.”

Before arriving at Camden’s Proud Gallery, where Chris Martin's brother Al’s band played, Donny had already been kicked out of three pubs. Liam might like him.

The singer, who revealed she used to write the Gallagher brother letters when she was a teen such was her love, said being at the same bash as them was surreal.

“I was watching the show and the paparazzi were taking photos of Oasis and after a certain point, some of them turned their cameras and were taking pictures of me watching Oasis, and I thought, 'This has definitely come full circle,'" she told MTV News

"I've met Noel Gallagher before, but (after the awards) I ran over to Liam and said, ‘Hi, hi, I’m Nelly, I’m a big fan, and you were great tonight’, and he went, ‘Oh right - I like your song’, and I’m like, ‘Which one? 'All Good Things Come To An End'? And he’s like, ‘Yeh, that one', and I’m like, ‘Chris Martin helped me write it', and then he goes, ‘Oh, then I hate it, it’s rubbish.'”

Damn - the love was ever so nearly reciprocated there...

The Day Elsie (95) Met Liam Gallagher

Pensioner Elsie Swann meets two members of the pop supergroup Oasis and asks: "Who are you?"

Elsie, aged 95, was outside film studios in London when her carer, Christine Jenking, noticed Liam Gallagher and fellow band member Andy Bell leaving the building.

Mrs Jenking gathered the courage to ask the two pop stars if she could take a photograph of them with Elsie.

They happily obliged. But Elsie hadn't a clue who she was being photographed with."She was delighted to have her photograph taken, despite not knowing who Oasis were," said Mrs Jenking, the 53-year-old leisure and activity co-ordinator at Atherstone's Bracebridge Court old people's centre, who accompanied resident, Elsie, on an outing to London.

"I couldn't believe it when I saw them coming out of the building."There was only me and Elsie there - in the right place at the right time."I said 'excuse me, excuse me, but are you with Oasis?'"I felt really silly. I asked them if they minded if I took a photo of them with Elsie."The lads were lovely."

Elsie, though, couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.Mrs Jenking said: "She asked 'who are you?'

"Then she looked over at me and said 'you worry me, you do, talking to these strange men.'"It just summed up the generation gap between us."

The nonagenarian is a retired school cook who took evacuees into her home in Grendon, near Atherstone, during the war. Her grandchildren, Gareth and Helen, are said to have been impressed by Elsie's brush with celebrity.Mrs Jenking said: "They think it's great that their grandma has been photographed with two members of Oasis.

"I'd got my old camera with me and I was shaking like a leaf, but the lads were wonderful."They got into a car and even waved at Elsie as they drove off. They were smashing."

Mrs Jenking has now bought Elsie, who is partially sighted, an Oasis CD!

Arcade Fire Criticise U2 And Oasis

Arcade Fire have criticised the marketing strategies of band's like U2, Oasis and The Rolling Stones.

Speaking in the new issue of NME, frontman Win Butler had a go at bands who aggressively force feed their music to fans.

Butler said: "It's not like we shun success, but at the same time we don't' want to shove it down people's throats. In the UK there's this kind of rock star competition.

"I don't know if U2 started it, or The Stones or Oasis but a lot of bands think in terms of: 'I'm going to be the biggest band in the world. f*** all those bands who've got no ambition'. I think that's a total crock of shit.

"There's nothing less interesting to me than the idea of marketing the f*** out of something so people are forced to like it. Some bands are just manipulating people to buy music. That's how 90 per cent of the record industry works! It's basically the same as selling a f***ing toaster or a cruise package."

Some Might Say F**k Off Noel

Feuding Oasis wildman Liam Gallagher has roped in an unlikely ally to have the last laugth on his brother Noel - barmy comic Borat.

The fiery frontman has put a Borat-style spoof message saying "motherf***r" on his mobile to cut in whenever, Noel rings.

Crafty Liam, decided to use the 35-year-old funnyman Sacha Boran Cohen's comedy character to give Noel his marching orders when the brothers fell out after last week BRITs Awards.

A close pal said last night: "The brothers are each others throats, so Liam thought it would be funny to get Borat to tell Noel where to go."

Harsh critics at the Brits claimed 34-year-old Liam's voice wasn't up to his usual standards and Noel, 39, apparently agreed.

The Gallaghers also reportedly clashed over who should keep the gong they won for Outstanding Contribution To Music.

"Both Liam and Noel have had a few words since the BRIT's and Noel keeps calling Liam," said the brothers pal.

"So Liam thought he'd get his own back. It started as a laugh but it has succeeded in annoying Noel.

"Liam set up a block on his mobile which bounces back whenever Noel calls with a Borat-style message calling him a 'motherf***er'.

But Noel hasn't seen, the funny side.

Gallagher Vs. Paparazzi: Liam Marks Up Photographer's Camera

Liam Gallagher clashed with paparazzi after leaving Oasis' BRITs after-show party - scrawling marker pen over the lens of one photographer's camera.

The wild rocker left the exclusive bash at London's Cuckoo Club at 4am on Thursday (15.02.07) with girlfriend Nicole Appleton and singer Lily Allen to be confronted by photographers.

After refusing to sign autographs for waiting fans, Liam turned his attention to the paparazzi.

Lily, who failed to win any of the three awards she had been nominated for, jokingly threatened photographers with a Christian Louboutin stiletto shoe.

An onlooker said: "The police had to be called because cars were getting scratched, people were getting squashed. Liam was just being his usual cocky self, which riled some fans who'd been waiting for autographs. Lily seemed to have the Liam snarl down to a tee."

Yorke Snipes Back At Gallagher

Latest: Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has defended his art school education and political activism against accusations from Noel Gallagher he's boring fans.

The outspoken Oasis star fumed last week (08FEB07), "Thom Yorke sat at a piano singing, 'This is f**ked up,' for half an hour.

We all know that, Mr Yorke. "Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit their twiddling, going, 'We're all doomed,' at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play Creep.

Get over it." But Yorke is adamant his education has provided at least one vital lesson Gallagher would be wise to adopt. On Radiohead's website he retorts, "It taught me to respect other artists."

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Don't Look Back in Anger" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's guitarist, Noel Gallagher. Released as the fourth and final single from their hit second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? it was , released on the 19th February 1996. The song became the band's second single to reach #1 in the United Kingdom charts, and the first to feature Noel replacing Liam Gallagher on lead vocals. The title is perhaps a play on the song "Look Back in Anger", from David Bowie's Lodger album or on the play by John Osborne of the same title from which Bowie's song took inspiration.

Noel said of the song "[It] reminds me of a cross between 'All the Young Dudes' and summat the Beatles might've done." Of the character "Sally" referred to in the song he commented, "I don't actually know anybody called Sally. It's just a word that fitted, y'know, might as well throw a girl's name in there. It's gotta guarantee somebody a shag off a bird called Sally hasn't it?". Noel claims that the character "Lyla", from Oasis' 2005 single is the sister of Sally. In the interview on the DVD released with the special edition of Stop the Clocks, Noel also revealed that a girl approached him and asked him if Sally was the same girl as in the Stone Roses' track Sally Cinnamon. Noel replied that he'd never thought of that, but thought it was good anyway.

Noel admits that certain lines from the song are lifted from John Lennon: "I got this tape in The United States that had apparently been burgled from the Dakota Hotel and someone had found these cassettes. Lennon was starting to record his memoirs on tape. He's going on about 'trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head". I thought 'Thank you, I'll take that'!" "Revolution from me bed" most likely refers to Lennon's infamous bed-ins in 1969 , both in the quote and in the song. The piano during the intro of the song is from "Imagine". The chord progression for both the verse and the chorus are very close to the classical piece Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel only differing slightly at the end of each phrase.

The song has become a favourite at Oasis' live performances. Noel encourages the crowd to sing along and often keeps quiet during the chorus, allowing the fans instead to sing along while he focuses on his guitar playing. The volume of crowd noise that usually descends on the chorus at concerts is easily audible on the rendition of "Don't Look Back in Anger" on Familiar to Millions.

The lyric to the song charts the lyricist's trouble keeping a relationship alive on a tour, coupled with images from an unhappy childhood. For example, the line "Stand up beside the fireplace / Take that look from off your face" is taken from Peggy Gallagher's instructions to Noel when he would have his photograph taken next to the fireplace when he was a child. An unhappy child, Noel would have to be told by Peggy to take the miserable look from his face, so as to produce a suitable picture.

The video for the song is notable for featuring Patrick Macnee, the actor who played John Steed in the 1960s television series The Avengers, apparently a favourite of the band. Whilst filming the video, drummer Alan White met future wife Liz Atkins. They married 13th August 1997 at Studley Priory Hotel, Oxfordshire, but later divorced.

The song has been used in a huge number of television programmes since its original release — perhaps most notably, it played over the end credits of the final episode of the BBC Two drama serial Our Friends in the North in March 1996, the very week it was at the top of the UK charts.

The single cover is an homage to the incident where Ringo Starr briefly left The Beatles during the recording of The White Album; after the other three Beatles members successfully persuaded him to return, George Harrison decorated Ringo's drumkit in red, white and blue flowers to show their appreciation.

The B-side "Step Out" was originally intended for the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album but was taken off after Stevie Wonder demanded 10% of the royalties as the chorus bore a similarity to his hit "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".

Oasis became the first act since The Jam to perform two songs on the same showing of Top Of The Pops, performing "Don't Look Back In Anger", followed by their cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize", also on the single.

In a 2006 radio interview, Liam Gallagher said that it was him who came up with the line "so Sally can wait" as Noel was struggling with that particular line at the time. (Bootlegs of demos of the song feature Noel singing 'Crowley' — as in Aleister Crowley — rather than 'Sally' so there may be some truth in Liam's claim.) Noel confirms this on the bonus DVD, entitled Lock the Box, released with the Stop the Clocks retrospective album. In the interview with Colin Murray, Noel admits, "I was doing it in the sound check and the so Sally bit, I wasn't singing that...and he [Liam] says, 'Are you singing so Sally can wait?' and I said, 'No.' and he said, 'Well you should do.'"

In 2006, a poll by Q magazine voted "Don't Look Back in Anger" as the 20th best song of all time.

The song was included as the closing track on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.

You Can't Sing Sunshiiiine

Noel Gallagher has issued an ultimatum to brother Liam — sort your voice out or forget recording another Oasis album.

Noel was furious with Liam’s below-par performance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night.

He reckons the rocker’s vocals on hits including Cigarettes & Alcohol failed to match his status as a member of the band that won the Outstanding Contribution gong.

And he told Liam that he needs to rediscover the brilliant, roaring notes that made him the best frontman of his generation . . . otherwise Oasis are no more.

A source said: “Noel had some harsh words for Liam after the show.

“He thought Liam’s voice was too nasal and well off his best. He reckons his singing is becoming more pub karaoke than professional.

“Liam wanted to perform Songbird but Noel told him, ‘No chance’. That started a problem beforehand and then they had a huge row over who should keep the award.”

The source added: “The band had their own sound team so there was no excuse for Liam not being on the money. The arguments have rumbled on since and they’re barely speaking.”

I have to agree with Noel.

I thought Oasis were brilliant at the Brits, blasting out an explosion of sound at Earl’s Court. But the crowd’s singing drowned out Liam’s vocals.

Having watched it back on TV, he seemed short of breath and strained his voice to the point where he sounded like a caricature of himself. His swagger was still superb and attitude seeped from every pore.

But only Noel got his vocals spot-on during the short set. He absolutely nailed Don’t Look Back In Anger.

In the past six months Noel has been performing more solo gigs, which must irk his younger brother.

An Oasis album is rumoured for the end of 2007 — even though they fulfilled their album deal with Sony with Stop The Clocks — and other labels are queueing up to sign them. There was talk on Wednesday that Liam wasn’t too keen to accept the Brit award.

Perhaps that’s why his singing was not up to scratch.

Here’s hoping it was a one-off and he proves Noel wrong.

The buzz the lads created at the awards proved they are as popular as ever.

I’m sure Liam will shiiiine again.

Caught Live Kasabian

Siobhan Grogan At Hammersmith Palais, London

Noel Gallagher has said that if Kasabian do their job properly, no one will need Oasis in a few years.

Though that might be overstating the case a little, there's no doubt few bands have ever been quite as keen as Kasabian to follow in the Mancunians' footsteps. They are just as quotable as the Gallaghers (famously slagging off everyone from The Strokes to Justin Timberlake), write the sort of anthems that can be sung on football terraces, and have had two Top Five albums.

On stage at this Shockwaves NME Awards Show, Kasabian were so fearsomely enthusiastic they made Oasis look like they should be settling down with their pipe and slippers.

Last time most fans saw the Leicester quartet they were headlining mammoth

Earl's Court down the road, so it was no surprise there seemed a genuine excitement about catching them in these far more intimate surroundings.

In typical Kasabian style, the band still threw themselves into the show like they had to fill a stadium. To excited cheers, singer Tom Meighan strutted on stage like the rock god he has always been in his head, eyeing up the audience as if issuing them with a challenge before throwing up his arms to signal proceedings had officially started.

Sounding like everything was turned up full - and then a bit more - Kasabian steamed through a set that seemed designed purposely to make eardrums bleed and even the most hesitant observer dance. Live, their grimy house beats and stomping, shoutalong choruses certainly sounded fiercer than on record too, equally brutal, brilliant and euphoric.

Noel will be glad to hear he's already a step closer to his retirement

Make Gallagher Prime Minister

Noel Gallagher makes more sense than any politician I've ever listened to.

In fact, the Oasis genius has so impressed me this week, I'm going to get over-excited, and say he should be knighted.

Balls to it, I'll go further: he should enter politics.

I'm sure Noel will think I'm a tit for saying a Sir would suit him and wouldn't even consider ditching the shade to don a suit to help run the country.

But I wish he would.

As well as slicing through celebrities, the man speaks on politics with a straightforward clarity that is inspirational to the ordinary bloke.

Please Noel, get involved. Your country needs you.

All the evidence says he would be brilliant at it. if you think I'm talking twaddle, then consider this.

After a lifetime of being barraged with abuse from Liam, policy battles at the House of Commons would hold no fear for him.

On war: First-hand experience with Liam
On drugs: Like most politicians, done loads.
On employment: Signed on for years.

And if it ever got too heated he could fall back on: "If you don't watch it, my brother will come down for you."

Seriously, this bloke is cool in a way I never knew existed.

Yes, he's got the whole rock star thing going on, but while he was closing the Brits with Oasis on ITV, a pre-recorded interview with him was going out on the BBC's Newsnight.

And he did what politicians never do: intelligently told it exactly how it is, in a way that everyone could understand and no one could argue with.

He also reiterated a point I made in this colum last month - people are more interested in reality TV than they are in how their country is run.

We already know he's got mass appeal - just look at the number of albums sold and stadia filled.

Not only did his band help to make guitar music cool again, but they also inspired just about every group that was nominated at the Brit Awards.

Are you really telling me that he couldn't get those same kids to care about thier country?

Noel - at the very least, just keep speaking up.

You've made me take note and I don't listen to anyone.

You really could be the voice Working Class Man no longer has in Goverment.

Oasis were undisputed kings of the Brits - but is their rock crown slipping? I only ask because I managed to get my hands on the band's allimportant rider - the definitive list of their backstage demands - and let's just say it makes for interesting reading.

Liam, 34 and brother Noel, 39 - honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Music award - must be going soft in their old age.

I hear they ordered soothing eye masks from cosmetic giant Estee Lauder to prepare for their big night. The £22-apop masks promise to "refresh skin diminishing puffiness and fatigue".

Luckily, the lads redeemed themselves since the rider also included six bottles of Veuve Cl icquot champagne, 100 bottles of Becks lager, 12 bottles of wine and a Thousand Marlboro Lights. Celebrations kicked off in the dressing room where stars including Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, actor Keith Allen and daughter Lily were invited to join the fun.

Kelly Osbourne also popped in, but was left red-faced after trying to blag extra invites, with Liam screeching: "It's you and your plus one only." Later, Liam and girlfriend Nicole Appleton, 32, went back to their hotel before continuing the party at Mayfair's Cuckoo club, where Nicole and best pal Kate Thornton dancing on chairs, cheered on by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

And Liam had to step in when Snow Patrol's drunken Gary Lightbody was hugging everyone in sight - and not letting go. Our spy says: "Liam had to tell Gary to stop making a twit of himself."

Naomi Campbell: 'Find My Imposter'

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has urged vigilant partygoers to find an imposter who is attending lavish events pretending to be her.

The feisty beauty is "extremely concerned" about her imposter, after it emerged the fake Campbell tried in vain to attend Oasis' Brit Awards after-show party on Wednesday (14FEB07).

She was refused entry by the band member Noel Gallagher. Campbell says, "You gotta find the imposter for me. Who is she, who is she?

I can't believe she's masquerading around town as me. "I wasn't even in London on Wednesday during the Brits as I was on a modelling shoot in Paris. It's not right."

Oasis Go The Top!

Brothers' £20k Bender

Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher were true rock 'n roll stars while celebrating their Brit Awards win - they spent £20,000 on booze.

And boy did they have a blast, despite the feuding fellas briefly falling out earlier in the evening.

They couldn't agree on which one of them should keep the gong they'd won for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Our mole said "Liam and Noel had hired out London's Cuckoo Club for their exclusive after-party and were looking forward to letting their hair down. Earlier in the evening they had accepted their award and performed on stage at London's Earls Court but had a few words backstage about who would keep the gong. In the end they decided their older brother Paul should look after it"

So after swapping some choice words, Noel, 39 set off for the Cuckoo Club, arriving at 11.30pm, and Liam, 34, turned up almost two hours later.

But once both blokes were inside the heavily-guarded venue, they had a fine old time.

Our mole drinking the Mojtos said: "There was a moment when Liam and Noel shared a brotherly type hug. It was lovely to see."

Our mole added that then Liam and his fiancee Nicole Appleton did their best to cheer up Lily Allen after she'd failed to land any of the four gongs she was tipped to win.

"Even Noel was sweet to Lily and the drinks were in full flow to the tune of about £20,000," he added.

"The rounds started and the biggest splurge was £2,700 on a bottle of champagne. When they left, you'd have thought they were royalty. They had such a hefty entourage - they were tighter than Beyonce's burly bodyguards."

"They had a top time of it, though, and proved they certainly know hoe to have a good time."

And we could have predicted lovely Liam would pull a feisty facial expression on his way home.

Supersonic stuff indeed. Let's try to get the lads out more often.

In His Own Words: The One And Only Noel Gallagher

On Tony Blair

"It was a big deal, the landslide and all that, and everybody got carried away. We thought it was going to be John F Kennedy and for a year or two it was. Unfortunately for this Labour Government, they are going to be saddled with the Iraq war and nobody can get around that."

On Labour

"Politics is like football for me. Labour is my team and even if you don't like a striker you don't give up supporting the whole team."

On the United States

"Whenever there is a conservative, Bible-waving half-wit ruling in the White House - whether it's Bush, his father or Reagan - there is war."

On Baroness Thatcher

"It annoys me that the biggest political icon from the last 30 years has been Margaret Thatcher, someone who tried to destroy the working class... it freaks me out you know."

On David Cameron

"It's like a songwriter who's eternally ripping off someone else's song and just changing the odd line a little."

On Pete Doherty

"Pete's always been an absolute gentleman to me and my missus. He's incredibly well-read and he's got a good soul. I tell you what, he needs to wash his hands more, but that's about it."

On fame

"When we started off, we wanted the girls, the cocaine, the fur coats. It wasn't like it was an act; it was almost like working-class people winning the pools. We went bananas."

"Next year I hope to get a stalker or two because I don't believe you've arrived until you get a stalker."

On drugs

"I liked drugs, I was good at them."

On giving them up

"After you make the decision it is quite easy. And I am quite proud of the fact that I didn't have to check into one of those dodgy clinics."

On 1993-1998

"I can hardly remember a thing."

On playing the guitar

"I've never considered myself a very good guitarist. I always end up playing the same guitar solo over different songs, and hoping no one will notice."

On religion

"I hope we mean more to people than putting money in a church basket. Has God played Knebworth lately?"

On fame in America

"I could walk out the hotel and probably stand in the middle of Broadway naked and everyone would go, 'Ah, who's he'?"

On money

"I've got everything I want. I could go and buy two of everything now - that just gets boring."

On happiness

"Listen, I've got £87m in the bank. I've got a Rolls Royce. I've got three stalkers. I'm about to go on the board at Manchester City. I'm part of the greatest band in the world. Am I happy with that? No I'm not! I want more!"

On Oasis

"We just believe we're the best band in the world. We're not arrogant, that's just a fact."

On Liam

"He is Abbott to my Costello, he is Cannon to my Ball, he is Little to my Large."

On Robbie Williams

"He's a f**kin' circus monkey!"

On himself

"I'm not like John Lennon, who thought he was the great Almighty. I just think I'm John Lennon.

On booze

"I know I've got Irish blood because I wake up every day with a f**kin' hangover.

On growing up

"Once you've been knocked virtually unconscious on the floor by your Dad and you know you're not going to die, you're not afraid of anything."

"I was on the verge of saying to my daughter, 'There is no Father Christmas' - I'm looking forward to breaking the news in about two years."

On fatherhood

"I'm kind of like most dads. I love kids, but I struggle with the responsibility."

On his own father

"As far as I'm concerned, I haven't got a father. He's not a father to me, y'know? I don't respect him in any way whatsoever."

On philosophy

"Progression is going forwards. Going backwards is regression. Going sideways is just aggression."

On receiving a gong

"It is hard to be modest at times like these so I won't even try... you are all s***e."

On Paul McCartney

"Paul McCartney, one of the best songwriters of all time, has only produced manure for the past 25 years."

On Kylie

"Kylie Minogue is just a demonic little idiot as far as I'm concerned. She gets cool dance producers to work with her for some bizarre reason, I don't know why. She doesn't even have a good name. It's a stupid name, Kylie, I just don't get it."

On George Michael

"He's now trying to make social comment, this is the guy who hid who he actually was from the public for 20 years. Now, all of a sudden, he's got something to say about the way of the world. I find it laughable. That's even before you get to the song, which is diabolical."

On Michael Jackson

"I respected him when he was proper artist before he started getting into all this cosmetic surgery shit. When he was in the Jackson Five, he was a genius. Now he's just a f**kin' freak, man."

On hip hop

"I despise hip hop. Loathe it. Eminem is an idiot and I find 50 Cent the most distasteful character I have ever crossed in my life. I just don't like the dragging women around on dog leads and all that stuff. I'm not f**king having that."

On Britney

"'Hit Me Baby One More Time' is a classic tune, but she didn't write it, she just mimed it on telly a few times. I don't get the Britney thing."

On Live8

Correct me if I am wrong, but are they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15-minute break at Gleneagles and sees Annie Lennox singing 'Sweet Dreams' and thinks, 'F**k me, she might have a point there, you know'. It's not going to f**king happen, is it?"

On his own work

"'Wonderwall' - that's virtually every bird between the ages of 30 and 36's favourite f**king song... 'Live Forever', in 1993. That changed everything. Before that everything sounded indie."

On the possibility of life on other planets

"If I saw an alien, I'd tell it to f**k right off because whatever planet he came from they wouldn't have the Beatles or any decent f**king music... I ain't going nowhere with them."

Wilson Lets Gallagher Fight His Battles

Kaiser Chief Ricky Wilson doesn't need to slate his music rivals - his pal Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher does it for him.

The I Predict A Riot hitmaker admires Gallagher for his constant verbal attacks on other musicians, and wishes he was more like him.

Wilson says, "I don't really think most of them deserve having me slagging them off. "It just gives more column inches in newspapers.

In any case, we've also got the best person to do it and that is Liam Gallagher. He's brilliant at it and I'll leave it to him. I usually agree with everything he says. "Liam doesn't give a s**t but I do. I think he's got a thicker skin."

Robbie's Just A Drama Queen

Liam Gallagher isn’t one to mince his words and he had some choice ones for Robbie Williams when I caught up with him backstage at the Brits.

The foul-mouthed rocker was on top form — ranting and swearing about Robbie going into rehab to anyone who would listen.

Liam — pictured above heading off to the Oasis aftershow party with Lily Allen — said: “What’s his f***in’ problem, man?

“We all know what it is — he’s a f***in’ drama f***in’ queen.

“If you’ve got a f***in’ problem, why do you want the whole world knowing about it? He has to be on the front f***in’ pages, doesn’t he? Just sort your f***in’ self out.

“You make a f***in’ crap album then want everyone to feel f***in’ sorry for you.

“F***in’ tosser!”

Liam and Robbie have had a long-running feud — not least because Robbie was once engaged to Liam’s missus, the gorgeous Nicole Appleton.

Havoc And Fun At The Oasis Brits After Party

For many celebs, it was a humiliating night they'd rather forget.

One after another they rolled up at the Oasis Brit's after show party - only to be turned away in front of photographers and scores of mere mortals.

Many begged bouncers to be let into the ultra-trendy Cuckoo Club in London's West End early yesterday morning - but Noel Gallagher was standing behind the door, personally vetting each one, and cruelly rejecting anyone he didn't like.

Laughing, Noel told us: "We're throwing our own party so we can snub people and not let them in."

Among those sent packing were James Morrison (who'd just won a Brit!), Badly-Drawn Boy, Suggs from Madness, Alex Zane, Sadie Frost and Jamie Callum. They were all forced to do the walk of shame back to their cars.

Amusingly, one of the few bands allowed in were double winners the Arctic Monkeys - even though they had snubbed the Brits ceremony itself.

Noel took his role as chief bouncer very seriously - when he wasn't standing behind the door checking who wanted entry, he was approving each name personally as messages were ferried to him by door staff.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, while Noel was on door duty, his brother Liam was causing a riot outside the club. It started with him scrawling on snappers' lenses and bald heads with a permanent marker pen.

An autograph hunter was left concussed, cars were smashed, and punches were thrown as chaos reigned. While Liam unleashed terror outside, we watched from our brilliant vantage spot inside, while pampered celebs were sent packing. We laughed as they pleaded and whimpered with bouncers that they had been invited - only to be turned away. It wasn't as if the place was even full. Those lucky enough to be allowed in included Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, The Kooks, Carl Barat, The Fratellis and Corinne Bailey Rae.

After a few beers, Noel really warmed to his role, and perhaps our favourite spat was when he realised Alex Zane had got past him with Sadie Frost.

The Roll With It star ordered his doorstaff to remove Zane from the dancefloor and boot him out! Sadie was left fuming and pleaded with staff to let Alex stay - only to flounce out in protest.

Another highlight came when Keith Allen arrived with his mate Badly Drawn Boy, aka Damon Gough. Keith was let in but when Damon was rejected he ranted into his phone and hung around for 20 minutes before sloping off home. Undeterred by losing his drinking-buddy, Keith danced around like a madman.

Meanwhile Liam, who should have got an award for Outstanding Contribution To Causing Trouble, sat in a booth looking spaced, randomly shouting at people as they walked by.

And considering the Manc lads' difficult relationship, it was something of a miracle that Noel even allowed his own brother into the party!

The Wisdom Of Noel Gallagher

Last night’s Brit Awards confirmed that the Oasis badboy has become a rare voice of reason in Britain’s preening and conformist pop scene.

At 39 years of age, Noel Gallagher of Oasis is worried about becoming just another rock dinosaur. In the run-up to last night’s Brit Awards, he declared: ‘We’re finally up there with the Eurythmics, Sting and Bob Geldof. So I’m not really sure that congratulations are in order….’

In fact, Gallagher did deserve the Brits’ Outstanding Contribution to Music Award – if only because in recent years the Oasis badboy and king of Nineties Britpop has become a rare voice of reason on the British music scene. They are sad times indeed when otherwise unremarkable statements of common sense become worthy of note. Yet Gallagher’s tirades against the ridiculous and famous are soundbites of rationality in a pop culture dominated by the bien-pensant and self-regarding.

Consider his recent outburst against the worthy and po-faced Radiohead. ‘Thom Yorke [singer of Radiohead] sat at a piano singing “This is fucked up” for half an hour. We all know that, Mr Yorke. Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit their twiddling, going, “We’re all doomed”, at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play Creep. Get over it.’ In a few well-aimed lines, Gallagher demolishes the delusions of the new ‘progressive’ rock.

It isn’t only the more epicene types who get bashed by Gallagher for being un-rock’n’roll. The (supposedly) punk band Green Day doesn’t live up to his standards either: ‘They consider themselves to be – and I quote – “a kick-ass rock’n’roll band”. They could not be less kick-ass if they tried.’

Gallagher has also attacked that most saintly of rock stars, Bono. He recently dismissed Bono’s pretensions to be the saviour of the world’s poor: ‘Play One, shut the fuck up about Africa.’ The mass guilt-assuagement exercise that was Live 8, which took place in venues around the world in 2005, also fell foul of the Mancunian’s political instincts: ‘Correct me if I’m wrong, but are they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15-minute break at Gleneagles and sees Annie Lennox singing Sweet Dreams and thinks, “Fuck me, she might have a point there, you know?” And Keane doing Somewhere Only We Know and some Japanese businessman going, “Aw, look at him…we should really fucking drop that debt, you know.” It’s not going to happen, is it?’

Okay, it might come across as cynical, but Gallagher nails the ridiculousness of the idea that playing a few pop songs on a summer’s day could help to lift sections of the world out of poverty. To most people who don’t have a Messiah’s To-Do List, Gallagher’s criticisms of Live 8 probably come across as fairly reasonable statements of political realism, yet he is often denounced for being ‘bratty’. He can probably live with that, when the alternative is to become one of those ‘arseholes’ (his word), like Elton John and Robbie Williams whom Gallagher has chastised for ‘lock[ing] themselves off from humanity’ and being too scared to go out and buy a pint of milk by themselves. Nor does he have much sympathy with Williams for checking himself into a clinic to deal with drug problems: ‘If you take drugs, you end up in rehab unless you’re a fucking rock like me - and then you just give them up.’

George Michael gets similar treatment. In response to the ex-Wham man’s crude song and video Shoot the Dog, which satirised Bush and Blair, Gallagher said: ‘He’s… trying to make social comment, this is the guy who hid who he actually was from the public for 20 years. Now, all of a sudden, he’s got something to say about the way of the world. I find it laughable.’

Gallagher’s own anti-war position seems more credible. ‘Blair made an almighty cock-up about going to war in Iraq’, he says. Gallagher hardly possesses anything like a sophisticated political analysis (‘I only get political every five years and that’s when I get my ballot paper’, he has said, as well as declaring: ‘Labour is my team and even if you don’t like a striker you don’t give up supporting the whole team’.) Yet his take on the Iraq debacle was far better than that of anti-war singers who signed up with the Tony BLIAR and anti-‘EVIL BUSH’ brigade. ‘When people go on about [Iraq] it’s like they’re suggesting that if anybody else had been in power they wouldn’t have gone in with the Americans. After World War II we always have sided with the Americans…. Don’t think for one moment David Cameron wouldn’t have sent the troops in, or the other guy from the Liberals.’

Gallagher remains quite sober about his own flirtations with the New Labour elite. Of his 1997 visit to Downing Street, after which Oasis were described as ‘Labour’s in-house band’, Gallagher says: ‘I have no regrets about going. I was only in my twenties at the time, and I thought – “he wants to meet ME? Well, fucking bring it ON!”’ He adds: ‘We all got carried away in ’97. Once the veneer wore off – even taking the Iraq debacle out of the equation – we’ve all just given a massive shrug. I think the Labour Party’s crowning achievement is the death of politics. There’s nothing left to vote for.’

Gallagher may not win any Outstanding Contribution Awards for manning the barricades, but he has the foresight to see faux-radicalism for what it really is: ‘Greens are fucking hippies with no place in the world. They’ve been telling us for the last 50 years not to use aerosols or the sky’s going to fall in.’ He nails the miserabilism of today’s eco-movements: ‘How do you suggest we get 50 million Chinese not to have a fridge? Or get 700 million Americans to stop using their big stupid cars?’

Speaking to the Sun in November last year, Gallagher slated the green movement’s apocalyptic predictions: ‘[Our children] won’t be sitting there going: “Dad, you shouldn’t have brought me into this world.” Kids adapt.’ Simplistic, maybe, but surely preferable to the green whining of contemporary bands such as Razorlight.

Rock stars used to delight in riding roughshod over received wisdom; most of today’s bland bands parrot received wisdom and it’s been left pretty much to Noel Gallagher to say, not very sophisticatedly, ‘What the fuck…?’ It is a bit sad when you find yourself celebrating the wisdom of a man who has made a career out of plagiarising other people’s songs and being only a little bit less of a twat than his brother. But in a world where rebellion has become just another gimmick, Gallagher’s antagonistic streak is refreshing.

I mean, if we’re going to have celebrities, surely we would rather that they spouted nonsense and meant it rather than affecting to be whiter than white. As Gallagher put it himself, talking about his band’s reputation for bad behaviour: ‘What would you rather read? “The guy from Keane’s been to a rabbit sanctuary ’cos one of the rabbits needed a kidney implant, so he swapped his with it” – or “Liam Gallagher sets fire to a policeman in cocaine madness while his brother Noel runs down Oxford Street nude”?’

Great Scot - It's The Next Oasis

The Fratellis are dark horses in the Breakthrough Act category.

They slipped in at No2 in the album charts last year with Costello Music without the help of internet or record label hype.

The Scots rockers really want to win – but won’t be able to afford celebratory champagne.

Singer Jon Fratelli said: “We deserve it. We didn’t get hyped like other bands. We just play and give fans what they want.

“We are still skint though – I can just about buy a round. Now we’ve got a nomination I want first-class flights from the record company.”

The Fratellis got their break touring with Kasabian last year. Jon said: “We have friendly rivalry. They say they are like Oasis and we are like The Verve – but we want to be Oasis.

“We met Noel Gallagher at our Earls Court gig. I was drunk and tripped over. My head landed at his toe. He was dancing so I don’t think he noticed.”

But he reckons there won’t be any tour-style antics when they all reunite tonight. He added: “We’re playing Nottingham tomorrow so if we win we’ll have to start behaving.”

Look Back In Awe With Oasis

As Oasis prepare to accept the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at this year's Brit Awards, it's hard to imagine a music scene without the outspoken Gallagher brothers at the forefront.

In fact, Liam and Noel are the only two surviving members from the original band line-up, who formed in 1991.

Supersonic was their first big hit in 1993, catapulting the band into the big time.

Their debut album Definitely Maybe was the fastest selling LP at the time and entered the album charts at No1.

Sales have now superceded an incredible 50 million albums worldwide and the boys have notched up an impressive eight UK number ones.

And throughout their 16 years in the limelight, Oasis have never shied away from controversy.

Their rivalry with fellow Britpop act Blur led Noel to shockingly declare he hoped singer Damon Albarn would "catch Aids and die," something he later apologised for.

The fiery relationship between the two brothers has frequently come to blows, and even threatened the future of the band on occasion.

Noel's frankness about cocaine indulgence has also hit the headlines.

Maybe an Outstanding Contribution To The Gossip Columns Award would be more apt!

The brothers have had a series of high-profile relationships, with the song Don't Look Back In Anger said to be about Noel's ex Meg Mathews, though he has always denied this.

Liam's marriage to Patsy Kensit in 1997 was doomed from the start, with the self-styled bad boy managing to impregnate Lisa Moorish just a week after his wedding.

Needless to say, they divorced in 2000 and he now lives with Nicole Appleton of the girl band All Saints.

The wilder days of the Gallaghers may now be behind them, but their music will undoubtedly Live Forever.

The brothers have given us some great quotes over the years. Here is a top ten:

1. Liam: "I’d never want to be that big in America as they’re all f***ing weirdos."

2. Noel on the influence of Arctic Monkeys: "It's gonna be c**ts with guitars going, 'And me mum works down the f**king chip shop, she met a geezer,' and all that. Great pop music is not about real life, it's about how great life can be. Real life's s**t."

3. Noel: "The middle classes 'experiment' with drugs; the working classes just get stuck in."

4. Noel: "If I ever get to go to the moon, I'll probably just stand on the moon and go 'Hmmm, yeah...fair enough...gotta go home now."

5. Noel on Robbie Williams: "He's just a fat tap-dancer from Stoke."

6. Noel: "The thing about us is we're honest. If we're asked whether we take drugs, we say yes. I was brought up by my mam not to be a liar."

7. Liam: "If I saw an alien, I'd tell it to f**k right off because whatever planet he came from they wouldn't have the Beatles or any decent f*****g music. So they can f**k right off, I ain't going anywhere with them."

8. Noel: "We're not arrogant, we just believe we're the best band in the world."

9. Liam: "I'm not getting married today. I'm in bed."

10. Noel: "Kylie Minogue is just a demonic little idiot as far as I'm concerned."

Gallagher: 'Williams Can't Stand The Heat'

Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher has criticised Robbie Williams for not being able to cope with his dependency on prescription drugs, just one day after the singer entered rehab.

Williams was admitted to a clinic in the US on Tuesday (13FEB07), his 33rd birthday, but Gallagher has little sympathy for him.

Speaking to UK radio station Heart yesterday (14FEB07), Gallagher said, "If you take drugs you end up in rehab unless you're a f**king rock like me - and then you just give them up. "We've all been there, but if you can't stand the heat..."

Noel, Bigger Than Elvis

Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher hit out at identikit politicians tonight as he boasted he could be "bigger than Elvis" as a solo artist.

The rocker said he didn't expect Britain to get any better if Gordon Brown became the next Prime Minister because he was no different from David Cameron.

And he said the media had made Tony Blair into a "president", adding: "It's no wonder he acts like one."

Interviewed by BBC Two's Newsnight as his band received a Brit Award for its Outstanding Contribution, Noel said there was nothing left to vote for.

"David Cameron is no different from Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown is no different from David Cameron.

"So I don't really think there's anything left to vote for. That's why people don't vote."

Noel said he preferred to stay in a band rather than go solo, but left no doubt he felt he would be a great success on his own.

"Maybe for all the money in the world but you know... I wouldn't do it by choice.

"I could do it easily but if I was a solo artist I would be the biggest solo artist in the country easy, no messing, within a year... seriously... but I prefer being in a band.

"But don't ever think that I couldn't do it. I could. I'd be bigger than Elvis. I would."

Furtado: 'I Wouldn't Be Here Without Oasis'

Pop star Nelly Furtado was inspired to pursue a career in pop after falling for the music of Oasis - and wouldn't be in the charts if it wasn't for the lasting effect the British group had on her.

The Maneater singer credits the band with giving her the determination to succeed in the industry, and believes she shares a lot in common with the Manchester rockers.

She says, "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Oasis. I bought my first acoustic guitar because of them and the first tracks I learned to play were Live Forever and Wonderwall. "I was inspired by their working-class roots because that's the kind of background I come from."

Liam: "B*llocks To The Brits!"

Oasis don't need gongs to know they rock, says Mr Gallagher...

Oasis are set to pick up the award for Outstanding Achievement at tonight's Brits (February 14) ceremony, but frontman Liam says he couldn't give a stuff about the gong.

“I don't need a f***ing award anyway, I don’t need a f***ing award to tell us how great we are," he told MTV. "People take what do they do with it too seriously - every time we've got an award it just ends up just slung in the f***ing corner.”

And after Noel recently said that U2 frontman Bono should, "Shut the f*ck up about Africa", Liam has reiterated that the lads won't be making any political comments in their acceptance speech.

“I’m not into that stuff, I’m not into that at all, I actually f***ing hate all that stuff," he told us. "There is a time and a place for that.”

Asked what inspiring words he might throw in instead, the monobrowed mouth-on-legs said, “The word 'b*llocks' and 'f***'. And maybe drop in 'God' every now and then.”

Oasis To Play Classic Tunes At Brits

Manchester rockers Oasis are set to play some of their classic hits at the Brit Awards tonight, where they will collect their Outstanding Achievement award from Beatles legend Ringo Starr.

Oasis will be performing CigarettesI & Alcohol and Rock 'N' Roll Star from their breakthrough album Definitely Maybe, which was released 12 years ago and opened the floodgates to the Britpop days of the mid 90s.

Other songs will include Don't Look Back In Anger and Morning Glory from their hugely popular second album, What's The Story (Morning Glory).

And the original indie rock 'n' rollers will be accepting their long-awaited Outstanding Achievement award from Starr, after deciding they may be getting too old to accept it in the future.
