Andy Bell On The Enduring Sonic Properties Of Oasis

Taken from the current issue of MOJO that is on sale now.

Ride were recording in late ’93, early ’94, and that’s when I first saw them and we heard the tape. I heard Bring It On Down, and to me it sounded like The Jesus And Mary Chain. I didn’t think Beatles or Sex Pistols or anything; I heard Mary Chain first, and then everything else afterwards.

It was like, Oh yeah! Pop songs and distortion! The fourth Ride album, which happened after that, where we sort of fell apart in the studio and split up, I was really trying hard to put all the distortion and energy back into it again.

The sound of Oasis is like a big rhythm guitar... a solid wall. If you play a bass line that takes it away from the frequency you hear in the rhythm guitar, then you’re playing it wrong. If the drums get away from a piledriving beat, then you’re doing it wrong as well. It all should sound like it’s got a forward momentum.

Sometimes it can be slow like a juggernaut or a battle-ship, and sometimes it can be fast like a Lamborghini, but it’s the same intense, driven sound. When you’re getting a song together, if you do it a shade too fast, you lose all the menace of it. If you do it just that bit too slow, it gets really evil, and that’s good. With the music, Liam and Noel both go on instincts.

Even though Noel’s more patient and takes more time with things, and Liam is more living in the moment, they’ve both got the same in-stincts, and they trust them all the time.

Cast’s John Power On Passing The Torch To Oasis And Getting It Back

Taken from the current issue of MOJO that is on sale now.

I’d met Noel when he was working with the Inspiral Carpets and they opened for The La’s. When I left The La’s, I went to see them play in Manchester, kind of to make peace with it all, really.

I was having a smoke and a bit of a moment, and this little lad came bouncing over and asked us to give him a toke. I said, “I’m just having a bit of a moment, mate, do you mind?” About three years later I went to see Oasis and Liam came straight over to me and was like: “You told me to fuck off!” It was Liam!
We had a laugh about it, then I went to see Noel and played him the demos for Cast that I’d recorded that day, and he loved them. One of them was [1995 track] Sandstorm. He asked us if we’d open for them. It was opening for Oasis at The Venue in New Cross that got Cast signed by Polydor.

From Irvine Beach to Knebworth, we’ve been there. When they announced the Oasis shows there was a lot of talk about who was going to support. We’d come off the back of the Liam shows and there was a lot of gossip flying around but I’d made my peace with it. As they say, don’t put your life in the hands of a rock’n’roll band. I wasn’t expecting it, but when we got the call to open for them it was amazing. It’s beautiful to  be part of it.

Bono Says Noel Gallagher Is 'Shocked' At How Good Oasis Are Sounding In Rehearsals

Bono has said that Noel Gallagher is “shocked” at how good Oasis are sounding ahead of their Oasis Live '25 gigs.

The sold out tour starts in Cardiff on July 4th.

Speaking to Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, and said how he thinks both Liam and Noel had an unmistakable impact on the indie music scene.

“I love them. I just love them. And what I really love is, the preciousness that had gotten [into] indie music, they just blew it out. There was just the swagger, and the sound of getting out of the ghetto, not glamorising it.”

He added “They’re both funny. I’m still very close with Noel, and he sent a message to me saying he’s kind of shocked by how great the band is [sounding at rehearsals]. I think we’re going to have a good summer.”

“I remember what they did. Those big guitars, big Neil Young [inspired], generous sounds – they were against the law in the UK. But they were like ‘No, I’ll do what I want’. They had this rhythmic, beautiful quality to them… and Manchester was very influenced by dance music, so they were groovier than anybody, they were rawer than anybody.”

Songbook: A Review Of One Of The Best Oasis Books To Come Out In Years

Oasis books are like buses, you wait for one for ages then about 19 come along at once. Such is the euphoria felt across the UK and beyond that every couple of weeks it seems there's a new Oasis book coming out at the moment. This book; 'A Sound So Very Loud, The Inside Story of Every Song Oasis Recorded' caught my attention early on when it went on pre-sale. I loved Mark Lewisohn's book of the complete Beatles recording sessions, and hoped it would be something similar. The result penned by Ted Kessler and Hamish MacBain is in the end, much more than a simple chronicle of the Oasis songbook. It's a biography set to the chronology of each and every song the band released, with the authors somehow finding legitimate musical and/or cultural significance in every song they put out.

Kicking off with a re-print of their WhatsApp messages when first discussing the book, and their excitement at hearing the rumours of a reunion for the first time, the book intersperses the inside story of Oasis' back-catalogue with recollections of the writers' experiences interviewing the band during their time as music journalists. Mixed with genuinely revealing stories about the songs (a lot of anecdotes even for me were new), there's a journalistic foundation to the cultural insights connected to many of the releases. It's genuinely fascinating to see how the 90s and 00s progressed with Oasis reflecting the changing foundations of politics, technology and culture, and in some cases earlier on in their career, causing it.

Setting a biography to the timeline of a band's releases is a great way of refreshing a story that's well told by now, and whilst there are plenty of recollections familiar to a lot of Oasis fans (Noel visiting Downing Street, told via Magic Pie, or the Blur v Oasis story, told obviously through the release of Roll With It), there are so many nuggets of revelations from their interviews, or from digging through the archives. There's a lot of insight on recording sessions, and several of-their-time influences on songs I had no idea about, for example how The Beta Band were a massive influence on Go Let It Out.

I suspect a fair few Oasis biographies this summer will be £2 in FOPP by Christmas so i'd hold out on most of them, but this is certainly one worth buying early for a good summer read.

Will there be a second volume?...

The book is out on July 3rd 2025 and is available from here and here.

Tony McCarroll On Recording Oasis' Definitely Maybe And More

Tony McCarroll reflects on his memories of the 'lost' record ahead of the huge reunion tour.

A few quotes from the interview can be found below, read the full interview here.

On the time between the legendary May 1993 King Tuts gig where Oasis were discovered to recording the first take of Definitely Maybe was a long one with a lot of uncertainty.

“Most of us were still somewhat living our normal lives with work and so on,though we’d bagged a record deal there was a lot of toing and froing to agree to the record contract. Probably the longest few months of my life. It still hadn’t been signed and anything could’ve gone wrong. But we hoped for the best that one day we’d put pen to paper and finally get a record released. What we'd always dreamed of.”

On the first Oasis recording session at Monnow Valley for 'Definitely Maybe'.

“It was a bit of a jolly up at first. Boys on holiday. Away from home and loving life. You soon learned that a studio can sometimes be a pressure cooker. You’ve got a job to do and must get on with it. Luckily, the drums were out of the way quite fast.”

Delve into a collection of rare and never-before-seen photographs that capture Oasis in their prime, from their early days in Manchester to their global domination.

Written by Tim Abbot, the MD at their label Creation, this explosive new edition takes you behind the scenes of Oasis at their most raw, most chaotic, and most iconic.

OasisDefinitely is Tim Abbot’s personal trip through the history of Oasis from his very first meeting with the band at the rundown offices of Creation Records to their huge worldwide tours and international fame.

Packed with Never-Before-Seen Content

Inside the book you’ll find:

Rare, unreleased photos from Tim Abbot’s personal archive.
Unfiltered stories from the road, the studio, and backstage.
First-hand insights into Liam and Noel’s creative (and chaotic) dynamic.
Exclusive footage grabs featured on The Lost Tapes Tour.

Why This Book Matters

Oasis didn’t just change music—they defined a generation.

In the 1990s, Britain was searching for a voice—and it found it in Liam Gallagher’s snarl, Noel’s songwriting, and the no-holds-barred swagger of a band that never knew when to stop. But behind the headlines, behind the stadiums and the fights and the fame, there was a band of working-class lads with something to prove—and Tim standing in the middle of it all, capturing everything.

This is his story. Their story. Your story, if you were ever part of the ride.

OasisDefinitely lands on bookshelves August 1st you can pre-order it and some exclusive prints from oasisdefinitely.com.
