Johnny Marr On Working With Noel Gallagher

Taken from a recent interview with Johnny Marr read the full article here.

You also played on Noel Gallagher’s “Who Built the Moon” this past November. Do you adapt your playing to a specific song, album or artist, or do you strive to do the opposite?

Noel was quite surprised because I’ve played on a few of his records now and he was expecting to send me the track. I’ve done so many sessions now that I’ve learned that I’m better when I react to the track straight away. He was surprised when I told him not to send me the track. I didn’t want to hear it before I played. It’s a bit like walking on the wire, you’re asking to screw up. My first impression is usually the right way to go... I always try to do what’s appropriate to the record. But over the years I’ve learned people want me to sound like me. I try to react to the record within my sound. I’m comfortable now with the reality that people get me in there for a reason. I try to live up to that ad bring it whilst not showboating. That’s something that comes with maturity and confidence and being okay with who you are. I have to thank people like Pet Shop Boys for giving me the opportunity to play on so many of their songs and explore different kinds of pop music. I’m at that place in my career now where I’m not too shy about it. You should know it’s me playing.

Noel Gallagher On Manchester City, Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, The Champions League And More

Taken from Noel Gallagher's interview with talkSPORT listen tot he interview here.

On Jose Mourinho.

'He seems to be sinking at the minute and if he's asking for the press to give him more respect, then this is the start of him unravelling.

'When I was growing up and Liverpool were the best team in the 80s, you couldn't even envisage they would go 20-odd years without winning the league.

'In the 90s when United were winning three in a row and Champions Leagues, and doubles and trebles, you couldn't envisage United going 10 minutes without winning the league, but it does happen.

'Since [Alex] Ferguson left United, which was a great day for British football, I think it is all beginning to unravel now and I am just going to sit back and watch it with great pleasure.'

On Manchester United's plans in the transfer market.

'I think the difference between the two clubs is that City have bought incredibly well, even the squad players are amazing. United have just gone for expensive players.

'They went after [Alexis] Sanchez because City were after him, they went after Fred because City were after him, they went for [Paul] Pogba because everyone else was after him. There doesn't seem to be any plan there when they're buying players for the future and that is a big difference.

'Nobody was after Bernardo Silva, no one was after [Leroy] Sane. People laughed when we bought Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker. There are people at our club, the committee who decides on the players, they're bordering on as big a geniuses as Pep [Guardiola].'

On Manchester City looking 'even better' this season.

'I went to the first game against Arsenal and I actually thought they looked better than last season in some respects. With the team being so young with Sterling, [John] Stones and Sane they're only going to get better.

'The only difference between these two seasons is last season we got the breaks along the way, although saying that I've just been watching the Man City documentary and I forgot how many injuries we had.

'I think it'll be a bit of grind this season because I don't think we'll get all our own stuff going our way again, but I think we look better.'

On Manchester City and Liverpool both being  'well matched'

'I think the two respective teams's starting XI are pretty well matched now but our bench gives us the edge.

'I looked at ours against Arsenal and it was absurd. There was £200million worth of players on the bench.

'Any team finishing above us is going to have to have a perfect season, not a great season, a perfect season because there are a lot of points to make up.

On why the Champions League is not 'an obsession' for Manchester City.

'I think I was listening to people saying that the Champions League will become an obsession for the club, but I can assure you it hasn't. For the fans, it's all about the league.

'I would rather be better than Chelsea, Tottenham, United and Liverpool than Real Madrid or Barcelona. We haven't won the league enough yet to be training our sights to the Champions League.'

Noel Gallagher On His Album With Amorphous Androgynous

Noel Gallagher told Matt Morgan that he found a copy of his album with Amorphous Androgynous in his sock drawer after he previously claimed to have destroyed it.

He said "I did find a copy of it recently in a sock draw, the masters (tapes), somebody has them, the masters have not been destroyed but it won’t be coming out any time soon."

"It might be nice to go back and revisit it in years to come, because 'Shoot A Hole Into The Sun' is fucking great and there might be more stuff like that in there. Best to give it a bit of distance though I think.

“There’s no bootleg because I own the master and I destroyed it, my manager’s not even heard it. I wouldn’t play it. It was so underwhelming to me that I never played it to anybody.”

A New Exhibition Opens In Harrogate Today Featuring Work By Brian Cannon And Gareth Halliday

To mark the 21st anniversary of Oasis album Be Here Now we are delighted to present a collection of rare prints and photography by Brian Cannon, the artist responsible for designing the band’s first three classic album covers.

The legendary Be Here Now cover session was shot at Stocks House, Hertfordshire (formerly home to Playboy executive Victor Lownes) and is an homage to rock ‘n’ roll excess.

Cannon: “You can’t just turn up at a hotel and put a Rolls Royce in a swimming pool for nothing. The mad thing about that sleeve is it looks photoshopped, because the Rolls Royce looks too small. In actual fact, that Rolls Royce really is in that pool – it took us two days to put it in. We could have photoshopped it, but it was the creative thing, that’s what turned me on. If you see some of the outtakes, it looks amazing, it looks serene, like it’s drowning.”

On its first day of release, Be Here Now sold over 424,000 copies, at that time becoming the fastest-selling album in British chart history. It was the biggest selling album of the year in the UK with 1.47 million units sold, and by 2008 had sold eight million copies worldwide.

Cannon, who founded design company Microdot in 1990 had previously worked on Oasis’ first two albums as well as various projects with The Verve and Super Furry Animals, following the lineage of Sir Peter Blake and Peter Saville, elevating the record sleeve to an art form.

These rare works feature alongside a series of new prints by Gareth Halliday; the artist commissioned to create the artwork for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album Who Built The Moon. Gallagher collaborated with electronic musician and composer David Holmes, with Halliday responding to each track and the expansive, psychedelic themes explored on the record.

Halliday: “It was the otherworldly quality of the instrumental arrangements as much as the lyrics, I felt I was creating imagery for a film soundtrack. I wanted the images to be positive, hedonistic, escapist perhaps, like the music, but with a dark undercurrent.”

Classic prints by Astrid Kirchherr, Peter Blake, Storm Thorgeson, Gered Mankowitz, Pete McKee, Horace Panter, Ian Skelly, Morgan Howell and Thomas James Butler will also be on display, with all works available to view and purchase at the gallery or online.
