Tom Meighan: " We Could Never Duplicate What Oasis Achieved"

........ While they stepped up their game in 2009, Kasabian also saw the demise of their friends – and idols – Oasis.

The mantle of best rock band in Britain seemed to pass on to them, but Tom isn’t content with the tag.

He explains: “It’s all very flattering and very nice people saying we’re stepping into Oasis’s shoes, but we could never duplicate what Oasis achieved.

“That will never happen – they were so massive and sold 40million records.

“Maybe if we’d been around in the 90s we’d have sold 10million albums but it’s different now.

“They were the biggest band since The Rolling Stones and were so f***ing big.

“We’re looking to have the same longevity and I hope I’ll be still around when I’m 40 – and bald and fat.”

Tom Meighan: "Seeing Oasis At 17 Changed My Life"

Tom Meighan spoke about his love for Oasis and revealed how seeing the band for the first time "changed his life".

He told Dabbl.co.uk: "I went to see Oasis in Manchester when I was 17 with Serge, and that changed my life because it was right in the middle of when their big hit come out and Oasis were absolutely massive, you know, super-massive, and it just took my breath away.

"That changed my life, looking at them as rock stars, and I was just absolutely gobsmacked and blown away."

Kasabian's Oasis Sadness

Kasabian admit they were upset when Oasis split up but denied rumours they are set to be joined by the group's former guitarist Noel Gallagher.

Kasabian were "very, very sad" when Oasis split up.

The 'Fire' hitmakers - who supported the 'Live Forever' stars on their UK tour earlier this year - admit they were devastated when guitarist Noel Gallagher walked out on the group, triggering their demise, in August because they had been fans for so long.

Frontman Tom Meighan said: "Oasis breaking up was very, very sad. We were gutted because they were our rock star heroes, when I was 16, 17 years old, they were my heroes.

"But they'll both carry on doing what they do. It's none of my business really, what they're doing. I love them equally."

The singer also laughed off persistent speculation that Noel is said to join them - but admits he would never rue it out completely.

He added to the Leicester Chronicle newspaper: "Well, it's just ridiculous. It's weird because we never, ever said Noel was going to join us.

"It's funny, but now we've got to answer to everyone and it gets a bit boring. You never know, because nothing's out of the question.

"But really, no, Noel Gallagher isn't joining Kasabian."

Kasabian Deny Gallagher Rumours

Kasabian have denied Noel Gallagher is joining the band following his split from Oasis.

Lead singer Tom Meighan said: "I'd like him to but he's not going to - he's just quit his band, he's putting music aside for a bit."

However, he said if Noel wanted to join them for a concert he would be more than welcome.

Kasabian Not Fussed Over US Success

Kasabian's Tom Meighan has said he is not fussed about breaking America - because he can't be bothered to tour there.

Tom told #5 magazine: "I'm not a**ed about it mate, the record (West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum) went to No 98 on the Billboard which is s**t, sold about 10,000.

"To break America you have to tour the motherf****r, and that takes a lot of time, it's massive..."

Tom added: "No-one but Coldplay and U2 are breaking America. It might happen, but we're certainly not going to change what we do. We're so dangerous for them, and we're not going to become non-confrontational."

The Shoot The Runner rocker also said Kasabian couldn't fill the void left by Oasis' split as the two bands are too different.

He said: "Well everyone keeps tipping us to fill the void, but you can't fill that void. Oasis are a big, anthemic sing-along band, while we're more of a dance-along band, we're completely different. If you're gonna call them The Beatles, then we're the Stones, you know what I mean?"

Noel Gallagher Is Hired Gun On Kasabian's UK Arena Tour

Kasabian have asked pal Noel Gallagher to return to gigging and join them on tour.

The Mancunian rock legend, 42, is already desperate to get back on the road again just month after Oasis split.

So he has turned to Kasabian and said: 'Maybe you're gonna be the ones who save me...' from being bored.

He's asked to appear on their upcoming UK arena tour - which kicks off in Newcastle on November 10 - and they have given him the thumbs up.

In an exclusive chat Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan, 28, revealed their gig plans and hinted they may record a song together in the future.

He told me: "We've got our arena tour in November.

"Noel will be calling us up nearer the time for sure saying, 'Lads, I'm going to come perform with you on tour'.

"He's a performing machine, and loves playing live so he jumps at the opportunity whenever he can join us."

And assessing the prospects of getting into the recording studio with Noel, Tom added: "We'd love to do a track with him. Never say never.

"But at the moment he's concentrating on his solo stuff and we're busy as ever."

I imagine Noel is fully aware that performing live with the Leicester rockers Tom, Sergio Pizzorno, Chris Edwards and Ian Matthews will annoy his younger brother and former bandmate Liam.

I'm told by a pal: "Noel has got itchy fingers and wants to get back into touring as quickly as he can.

"He and the Kasabian lads have spoken about it and they all thought it was a brilliant idea so he will join them onstage in for a few cameo appearances.

"It also has the added benefit that it will irritate the hell out of Liam, who didn't want the band to split at all.

"It shows Noel has already moved on and can play with anyone that takes his fancy, which will rile Liam considering how competitive he is."

Noel and Kasabian's collaboration will come as good news to Oasis fans who missed seeing the band after a huge bust-up between him and Liam caused the band to split and cancel a number of gigs in August.

A music insider tells me: "The Kasabian lads love Noel and see him as a guiding light. To get him to play on Their tour rather than support him as they have before means so much to them. Plus imagine what it would do for ticket sales."

Noel has performed with Kasabian before. He did three songs with the Mercury Prize nominees at Edinburgh's Hogmany in 2007.

And they joined Noel and Liam on the doomed Oasis summer tour.

Tom Meighan On Oasis "I've Heard Liam Is Going To Carry It On Without Noel"

Kasabian are ready to take over from Oasis as the UK's biggest rock band.

It's been nearly a month since Noel Gallagher walked out on Oasis because of "verbal and violent" intimidation.

And while Kasabian are sad their musical heroes are no more, they reckon they are the natural successors to their crown.

Hours before they prepared to headline a massive gig for Guinness in Dublin, singer Tom Meighan said: "It's over for Oasis now. It's not my business but there must have been a lot of trouble happening for Noel to walk out.

"If it's so big that he's not coming back, it's a sad day for rock 'n' roll.

"I've heard Liam is going to carry it on without Noel but to me it's over."

Bassist Chris Edwards said: "They have left a big hole. Festivals, stadiums and arenas will need filling and we are ready to be that band."

Oasis Split Divides Loyalties

The bitter split between Liam and Noel Gallagher has left their famous friends torn between the two rowing brothers.

Kasabian lead singer Tom Meighan is determined to stay neutral after he became close to the pair while supporting Oasis on their latest tour.

'It's not very nice because I'm friends with both Noel and Liam,' said Meighan, 28, talking exclusively to me just hours before the brothers' final bust-up in Paris.

'They're going to have some time out now to re-evaluate the situation,' he said. Some Oasis band members have already staked their loyalty with Liam, 36.

Bassist Andy Bell was pictured holidaying with Liam and his wife Nicole Appleton, 34, in Italy at the weekend. Noel announced he was leaving the band on Saturday.

'I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,' the 42-year-old said on the Oasis website.

Meanwhile, Kasabian are performing at Guinness's 250th anniversary music festival in Dublin next month.

Kasabian Reject Oasis Tag

British band Kasabian have the local bomb squad's number on speed dial but the new kings of "lad rock" insist their hell-raising days are behind them.

Short-listed for the prestigious Mercury Prize after their third album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum recently topped the charts, the psychedelic rockers flatly reject comparisons to another globally successful all-male British band that also has its fair share of awards: Oasis.

"People say we're going to be the new Oasis, but we're not," Kasabian vocalist Tom Meighan said during a recent trip to Tokyo.

"There is no new Oasis. We can't be Oasis because they've done it. Oasis were giants in the 90s. It's nice when people say it but they're kind of missing the point."

Kasabian supported Oasis in a series of stadium shows in Britain over the summer before flying to Japan to perform at the "Summer Sonic" music festival, but Meighan said this was for the band's own good.

"We played in front of almost a million people in three weeks," said the 28-year-old. "The record was just out so it's the best promotion you can get. You do it, don't you?"

Meighan admitted Kasabian used to be "terrors" on tour and trouble has sought them out in unusual ways: guitarist Sergio Pizzorno found a live World War Two grenade in his garden.

But now Meighan believes the band has grown up, with the critically acclaimed West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum marking a turning point for the musicians who hail from Leicester, England.

Kasabian Pay Tribute To 'Iconic' Oasis

Band speak about their tour mates...

Kasabian singer Tom Meighan has paid tribute to Oasis, who the band are currently supporting on a UK tour.

Meighan told BBC Newsbeat the Manchester group were one of only a few remaining “iconic” bands.

“You've got to remember they were huge and they still are huge, they're massive,” he said.

“It's the enigma, its just Oasis, they're still here after 15 years.

Kasabian are the main support act on Oasis' UK tour, which began last week with three shows in Manchester.

After an opening night which was tarnished by sound problems, the band completed their run with two gigs on Saturday and Sunday.

Oasis Overtaken By Web

Oasis will be replaced by the internet, claim Kasabian.

Guitarist Serge Pizzorno insists modern technology is preventing musicians from becoming popular because the public are saturated with too much information and choice.

Serge said: 'I don't think there's room for a band like Oasis anymore, you'll never get a phenomenon like that again. The internet dilutes everything. You can't just see a band on the TV once a week and then have to invest in buying the single.

'We used to go out and find a new song on a Monday morning, then you'd open the cover and read everything about it. That just doesn't exist anymore. It's a shame. If you never had it, you'll never miss it but when you've got the last of it you go, 'That was good, wasn't it?' '

Singer Tom Meighan believes people are transforming into humanoid robots that will need computers to help them reproduce.

He said: 'We're turning into cyborgs, can you imagine in another 20 years plugged into that f**king thing on the screen? Can you imagine another 50 years? No one will give a f**k anymore. People will make children on the internet. They'll pick the colour of their eyes. It's going to happen, I'm telling you.'

Kasabian: The Oasis Dates Are Going To Be Fucking Brilliant

Tom and Serge from Kasabian have told the Daily Star that the Oasis dates that start next week are going to be "fu**ing brilliant, there going to be great rock shows, really powerful," insisted Tom.

"We are going to play a really high energy set, promised Serge.

Checking out Oasis' old rivals Blur isn't on Kasabian's agenda, however.

"If I went to a Blur gig we would probably get sneered at," cringed Tom.

Kasabian's new single 'Fire' is out on June 1. The Album follows on the 8th.

Kasabian Gearing Up For Huge Cardiff Show With Oasis

Despite having sold nearly two million records and been invited to tour with good friends Oasis, the band who play the Millennium Stadium next month say they have only just realised they’re huge.

“It’s weird, man,” begins front man Tom Meighan, with puppy-dog enthusiasm.

“We were doing Jools Holland the other week and we were the biggest band on it.

“Before, we’ve been on with big names, Smokey Robinson, Jarvis Cocker and people. We were looking at the list for this one, and those names aren’t there - we’re the biggest band. It’s funny...” he says, chuckling, pleased with himself. “About time.”

There’s going to be no escaping Kasabian over the coming months. With a tour kicking off in their hometown on May 29, a support slot with Oasis on their summer mega-shows and more festival appearances in between, it’s a gruelling few months for the band. Factor in their reputation for hard-living while on the road, and the prospect would make all but the hardiest of folk wince.

Tom, however, can’t wait.

“I climb the walls when I’m off,” he says. “I’ve started painting – I’ve had a portrait of Brian Jones on the go for ages, but I haven’t finished it – and I catch up with friends when we’re not busy, but I miss touring. Having time to yourself is great, don’t get me wrong, but there comes a point when I have to get back on the road and start playing rock shows again.”

When the name Oasis is mentioned, Tom has nothing but praise for the band most see as Kasabian’s spiritual predecessors. He’s quick to scotch musical comparisons, saying any similarities are more down to shared values and beliefs than any influences or sound. “We believe in realism, like they do, but we’re from the other side of the rainbow to them, musically, and Noel would be the first person to say that as well.”

Like the Gallagher brothers’ relationship being central to Oasis’ story, the brotherly bond between Tom and Serge, who first met in Leysland High School when they were 12 or 13, is equally important to Kasabian’s success, if less fractious.
