Caught Live: Noel Gallagher Solo

Some gigs are so special you’ll never forget them – when the artist, venue, crowd and music just click.

Noel Gallagher's was just that.

On Sunday he gave one of the most polished, awe-inspiring performances I’ve ever experienced – in front of a small, 400-strong audience of Oasis diehards.

The star strummed, snarled and wise-cracked his way through 13 tracks made up of 12 Oasis classics and a brilliant cover of The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever.

The crowd at the Mencap charity gig – held in the unusual surroundings of a church – enjoyed brief sets by two-piece Scouse band SHACK and chart-toppers Kasabian before Noel took to the stage.

First off was (It’s Good) To Be Free, then Talk Tonight, Fade Away and Cast No Shadow, which Noel described as: “Polished that, weren’t it?”

The Importance Of Being Idle came next, then Listen Up, Half The World Away and Wonderwall.

After Slide Away – which he dedicated to girlfriend Sara Macdonald – he launched into Strawberry Fields Forever, at the end of which the entire crowd stood applauding for more than 30 seconds.

Halfway through the set, Noel spoke for the first time about Pestlife beating Oasis to No1. He told fans: “If ever you needed proof that there isn’t a God, it’s Westlife getting the No1.”
And his mum Peggy would be horrified he used the C-word in the Lord’s house.

The night came to an end with Don’t Look Back In Anger then Married With Children.

Noel closed by thanking guests and hailing Kasabian as the greatest band in England then apologised in advance to any fans he failed to sign autographs for later because he would be “too a*******d” to do it.

A top caner, a top man and a top performer.

On This Day In Oasis History

"Let There Be Love" is a song on the British rock band Oasis' sixth album, Don't Believe the Truth. Written by Noel Gallagher, it is only the second Oasis song to feature Liam and Noel on lead vocals, the first being the B-Side "Acquiesce". It was released on November 28, 2005 as the third single from the album in the UK, and the second single in the US. It reached number two in the UK charts, capping a very successful year for the band.

A demo for the track was recorded during demo sessions for Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. A bootleg of these demo sessions was leaked onto the Internet in early 2000. This track was given the unofficial title "It's A Crime" on many bootlegs as the track was unknown and unreferenced anywhere before then. The album version of the song is structurally almost exactly as the same as the demo with a slight change in melody in the part that Noel sings. The lyrics to the chorus remains intact, but the verses and bridge have totally rewritten lyrics.



A second, Noel-sung demo was released on the "Let There Be Love" DVD single. It has the same lyrics as the album version, and in fact the album version takes some elements from the demo such as the piano. It was probably recorded sometime in 2003 or 2004, prior to the main Don't Believe The Truth recording sessions.

The video is a montage of some of Oasis' live shows during the summer of 2005 including clips of the gigs at Hampden Park and the City of Manchester Stadium. The clips don't actually show the band playing 'Let There Be Love'.

The song has never been played live to date, except once on an Italian radio station. It is an acoustic version entirely sung by Noel.

Semi-Acoustic Noel Gallagher Hits Australia

Noel Gallagher brings Oasis bandmate Gem Archer for a quick Australian tour.

In a very late announcement, hot on the heels of their Best Of 'Stop The Clocks', the two will play four semi-acoustic shows in the middle of December as a plug for the album. Noel and Gem have already played these types of showcases in London, Los Angeles, Toronto and Tokyo, knocking out a virtual greatest hits set on guitar, organ and featuring Terry Kirkbride on percussion.

Reports from LA and Toronto said that Gallagher aired Oasis' 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' film from their 2005 tour which is slated for a 2007 release. It featured performances, backstage footage, interviews and tour bus action and doesn't shy away from the ever-entertaining niggling between Liam and Noel.

In fact, Noel has been yapping even more during press for the album. He recently chided Arctic Monkeys for being embarrassed about chart success. He declared, "If you're not in the charts, you don't exist. I went in there to get Phil Collins' severed head in my fridge by the end of the decade."

Westlife's 'The Love Album' beat 'Stop The Clocks' to the top of the UK charts this week when both albums debuted.

Noel Gallagher: A Day In The Life

Hong Kong, China (CNN) -- It's hard to imagine it's been more than 10 years since Oasis first became one of Britain's most acclaimed bands -- a rough, tough and uncompromising bunch of lads from Manchester who helped return British guitar pop to the mainstream fold.
Yet here they are in Hong Kong, at the tail-end of a 12-month world tour, on the eve of a sell-out gig.

The band has just arrived from Singapore ("Flew first class with Singapore Airlines -- f-----' spectacular," enthuses guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher) and are preparing for the show.
The logistics of organizing such a long tour are mind-boggling, and even after 10 years, Gallagher's not sure how it's all put together.

"We have management, and an agent, and separate promoters in each country that do everything. Maggie (their tour manager) liaises with our travel agent back home, and I notice we stay in a lot of Four Seasons hotels," Gallagher says.

"But apart from that, it's still a matter of great confusion for me how it's all organized."
What's not confusing for Gallagher, however, is his ability to read a city map.

After arriving in a new place, he almost always makes an effort either the day before or after the gig to explore his surrounds, otherwise "there's no point going unless you get a feel for these cities," he says.

"We have a day off tomorrow, so I'm hoping to see a bit of Hong Kong before we take off."
Even so, Gallagher admits that after a year, touring can become arduous.

"The first six or seven months or so are great, but the last bit can be a bit of a grind," he says.
"Southeast Asia can be tough, as the jet lag from Britain is more extreme. In Europe, it's much easier as everything happens at the same time of day, whereas in Asia, it differs between countries. Sound checks, etc., start at different times, there's always unfamiliar people around, and you're in a different city one day to the next.

"But in the end, it's what you make of it. I could be critical of touring for hours, but that'd make me sound like a boring old bastard who should just give it up.

"This is my 20th year on the road (including the time Gallagher spent as a roadie), and I've been on tour every one of those years. So that in itself is the answer. If I didn't like it, I wouldn't do it, because I sure don't need the money," he says.

Touring for such long periods must also be demanding on the body, and despite the band's well-known rebellious streak, Gallagher tries to keep some sort of balance.

"I always have a healthy breakfast. The days of bacon and eggs are gone, and I usually try and get a good night's sleep before the day of the gig, otherwise you start doing stupid things when performing" he says.

"On the other hand, we have tomorrow off, so I'll probably be up all night on the piss. I certainly drink a lot more on tour, though hardly ever when I'm back home."

Such a revelation is hardly surprising. According to Gallagher, the band's alcohol list backstage (commonly referred to as a "rider") includes "lots of Guinness, lots of beer, lots of red wine, lots of vodka, and one bottle of whiskey."

Before the show, Gallagher usually spends the afternoon doing interviews, then heads to the venue for a personal sound check -- usually at about 4 p.m., followed by a full band sound check.
The group then either stays at the venue or returns to their digs, depending on how far the venue is from their hotel.

"If we're on at 9 p.m., which is common, our tour manager usually insists we be at the venue by 8.30 p.m. at the latest. So often it's best to just stay put," Gallagher says.

"If so we just hang out and use the time writing our song list for the show. Then Liam comes in and crosses off the ones he's not keen on for that night."

Gallagher has the luxury of a guitar technician, who looks after all his guitars prior to the show by setting them up, re-stringing, and tuning them.

"Before we became very f-----' wealthy young men, I used to use Epiphone guitars," Gallagher explains.

"But they're really a poor man's Gibson, which is what I now use. I don't have a deal with them, as I don't go in for that sort of thing. But I did design a guitar for Epiphone once."

After the gig's complete and the fans have left, Gallagher says the band often relaxes backstage with friends and road crew by having a few drinks and talking about the show.

A show that, one presumes for a band as established as Oasis, will prove rather lucrative?
"Well, we make more money in the UK, simply because more people come to see us in concert than here in Asia. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what we'll get for tonight's gig," he says.
"But let's just say that when we get home from a tour, I receive a sheet of paper with loads of figures on it.

"And when I look at the net total I'm being paid, I never think 'hmm, that seems a bit low'. Instead, I laugh, and think 'outrageous'!"

Gallagher Has No Knighthood Ambitions

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has urged British monarch Queen Elizabeth II not to honour his contribution to the British music industry with a knighthood. The Wonderwall rocker has no intention of following the footsteps of idols Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Mick Jagger, and feels the aristocratic mantle would be out of keeping with his working class roots. He says, "I don't think I'd go for one of those."

Westlife Loved Up

The chart battle to end all chart battles came down to wire.

The tussle between Oasis and Westlife was close, with the Gallagher brothers' Stop The Clocks collection benefiting from a last minute surge in sales.

Alas, it was too little too late, and Westlife's Love Album triumphed - landing the quartet their sixth No 1 album.

It was nail-bitingly close, though, with Liam and Noel missing out by only 5,000 copies.

The Love Album posted 219,000 sales, Stop The Clocks 213,000 and The Beatles' Love collection 173,500.

I still get plastered, just not all the time!

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher still loves the odd bender and scrap with paparazzi, but the wild man of rock'n'roll insists that he's now enjoying family life with his boys and missus, All Saints' Nicole Appleton.

Are you still up for a fight with the paparazzi?

Nah, I've calmed down. But it depends how close they get to me; if they're in my f***ing space then they're going to get a dig. Sometimes they come up and take the piss and that's when I react.

Has being a dad calmed you down?

I suppose so, but not too much. I don't go out as much as I used to because I'm in with my kids and missus and get a buzz off them. But when I do go out I still have a f***ing good time. We don't go out and say: 'Hey, man, we're dads so we're gonna take it easy!' We still go boozing for a couple of days, drink f***ing anything - Guinness, larger, champagne, wine, sambuca - and get high, get plastered. But we're not out on the piss all the time, like we used to be, because there are little people involved now.

How wild did things get when you first made it?

You know what, I can't remember much about that f***ing whole thing, I was very, very drunk alot of the time. It was a wild as you could imagine.

Is music still your biggest passion?

Music's big, but it's no good if you're going to sniff it. So my health, my kids' health, my missus, my mates and my happiness are the most important things now. Then it's music.

Some might say it's not very rock'n'roll to put your kids and missus before your music...

Well, I don't give a f***what anyone thinks. I'll tell you what's wrong: to not put them first. I love hanging out with the kids taking them swimming. And just me a Nic going to dinner or going on holiday together.

So it's going well with Nic?

Yeah, man, of course it is. It's f***ing paradise because she's my baby.

Are you and Nic ever going to tie the knot?

One day, but I'm not gonna go round telling everyone when I do! Hey, we might have already tied the knot, if you know what I mean.

Didn't you say: 'If you want to see the opposite sex sprout four heads, just exchange rings'?

Yeah, but that was just me having a dig at the ex-wife!

What do you think of All Saints reuniting?

I think it's cool. They've just done an album and it sounds great. I was a fan of them before because they were the coolest girl band around. They weren't like all the other girl bands, with their arms around each other, saying: 'Ooh, we love each other', when it was obvious they didn't. They told it like it was - one of you's a c*** and the other one's a bitch! It was refreshing and that's what makes them different.

Is it hard for you and Nic to juggle work and the kids now?

Yeah, now that Nic's back at work she's gasping. We've just got a nanny to help us with Gene [five]. It helps that the eldest [Lennon, seven] is at school, too. We've also got a lady who takes him to school and picks him up.

It sounds like things are pretty cushy for you. Are you abit of a lazybones?

Am I lazy? I'm not f***ing lazy I'm up at seven o'clock every morning - up first and last to bed! I'm not a workaholic , though. Noel's a workaholic; he'll do 18 hours of f***ing graft a day! But then he gets paid more than me, so why f***ing not, eh? Before I had kids I'd stay in bed 'till midday, but now I'm out the door well before that. Even when I'm hungover and I'd like to stay in bed, I just can't sleep! I can come in at 6am and still be up at 8 o'clock, so I'm definately not f***ing lazy.

Has having kids changed the way you see the world?

You get a totally different sense of the world with kids. When you're walking down the road holding their hands, they're just looking around at everything. It makes you stop and look, too, and you start seeing thnigs all over again because you sort of become a kid yourself.

Will your greatest hits album Stop The Clocks be the last for Oasis?

This is just a pause. It's the end of our current record deal, but hopefully we'll get a new deal and crack on. As far as I am concerned, there's plenty more music left in us. I just want to keep making f***ing great Oasis records. I don't think we've made our best album yet. We're gonna do it and it's gonna blow everyone's f***ing face off, you know what I mean? Even the doubters are just gonna go: 'F*** it, man, hands up for that one.' So I think that one's coming soon - our genius record.

Do you have any regrets?

Not really. I'd do it all the f***ing same. I've got two beautiful kids, I've got f***ing money in the bank, I've got a nice house, got a nice missus, my mum and brothers are f***ing happy... It could be worse couldn't it? Even the ex-missus if f***ing coming around, so life's good.

Noel Gallagher plays unique gig at a chapel However Westlife beating Oasis proves 'there is no God.

'Oasis' leader staged an acoustic show at the Union Chapel in Islington as part of the Little Noises Sessions for charity Mencap.

Performing in front of his smallest UK audience for years, Gallagher backed by bandmate Gem on guitar and a percussionist, played a mixture of acoustic b-sides and album tracks adapted for the evening.

Arriving on stage to chants of "Noel! Noel" before opener 'It's Good To Be Free', the guitarist charmed with both his musical performance and his between song banter.

With the likes of 'Cast No Shadow', 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger' among the highlights, Gallagher also let the small crowd know his feelings after Oasis' 'Stop The Clocks' was beaten to the Number One slot in the UK Album Charts by Westlife tonight.

"Did someone say Westlife?" he asked the audience. "That goes to prove there is no God!"

However realising he was in a chapel he addressed the almighty saying: "You may strike me down if you wish, but it's true!"

With the set including a cover of The Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields', Gallagher also paid tribute to Bob Dylan.

Introducing single 'Whatever', a track Oasis have not played live in the UK in some while, the guitarist explained he had based his new acoustic version of the song the legend's style, before blending it with the rhythm from 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'.

"I haven't played this next song in what... two weeks," he joked referring to a recent acoustic show in Los Angeles. "But as for you lot you haven't heard in ages. I'm going to do it in the style of Bob Dylan!"

Meanwhile despite the stripped down set-up, Kasabian were at their rabble rousing best including 'British Legion', 'The Doberman' and Beatles cover 'I'm So Tired' in their set, before getting the whole of the Union Chapel on their feet for closer 'LSF'.

The Little Noises Sessions are set to conclude with the final gig at the same venue tomorrow (November 27), with it strongly rumoured that Lily Allen will be joined onstage by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.~

Australian Acoustic Shows In December

Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher will play a Melbourne gig with one of the globe-rocking band's members next month.

To promote their new "best of" album, Stop the Clocks, Gallagher and rhythm guitarist Gem Archer will play a semi-acoustic show at the Forum on December 10.

Left at home in Britain are Gallagher's younger brother Liam, who sings most of the band's songs, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Zak Starkey.

The brief Australian tour will include shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Tickets will be available from Thursday.
