Arcade Fire Criticise U2 And Oasis

Arcade Fire have criticised the marketing strategies of band's like U2, Oasis and The Rolling Stones.

Speaking in the new issue of NME, frontman Win Butler had a go at bands who aggressively force feed their music to fans.

Butler said: "It's not like we shun success, but at the same time we don't' want to shove it down people's throats. In the UK there's this kind of rock star competition.

"I don't know if U2 started it, or The Stones or Oasis but a lot of bands think in terms of: 'I'm going to be the biggest band in the world. f*** all those bands who've got no ambition'. I think that's a total crock of shit.

"There's nothing less interesting to me than the idea of marketing the f*** out of something so people are forced to like it. Some bands are just manipulating people to buy music. That's how 90 per cent of the record industry works! It's basically the same as selling a f***ing toaster or a cruise package."

Some Might Say F**k Off Noel

Feuding Oasis wildman Liam Gallagher has roped in an unlikely ally to have the last laugth on his brother Noel - barmy comic Borat.

The fiery frontman has put a Borat-style spoof message saying "motherf***r" on his mobile to cut in whenever, Noel rings.

Crafty Liam, decided to use the 35-year-old funnyman Sacha Boran Cohen's comedy character to give Noel his marching orders when the brothers fell out after last week BRITs Awards.

A close pal said last night: "The brothers are each others throats, so Liam thought it would be funny to get Borat to tell Noel where to go."

Harsh critics at the Brits claimed 34-year-old Liam's voice wasn't up to his usual standards and Noel, 39, apparently agreed.

The Gallaghers also reportedly clashed over who should keep the gong they won for Outstanding Contribution To Music.

"Both Liam and Noel have had a few words since the BRIT's and Noel keeps calling Liam," said the brothers pal.

"So Liam thought he'd get his own back. It started as a laugh but it has succeeded in annoying Noel.

"Liam set up a block on his mobile which bounces back whenever Noel calls with a Borat-style message calling him a 'motherf***er'.

But Noel hasn't seen, the funny side.

Gallagher Vs. Paparazzi: Liam Marks Up Photographer's Camera

Liam Gallagher clashed with paparazzi after leaving Oasis' BRITs after-show party - scrawling marker pen over the lens of one photographer's camera.

The wild rocker left the exclusive bash at London's Cuckoo Club at 4am on Thursday (15.02.07) with girlfriend Nicole Appleton and singer Lily Allen to be confronted by photographers.

After refusing to sign autographs for waiting fans, Liam turned his attention to the paparazzi.

Lily, who failed to win any of the three awards she had been nominated for, jokingly threatened photographers with a Christian Louboutin stiletto shoe.

An onlooker said: "The police had to be called because cars were getting scratched, people were getting squashed. Liam was just being his usual cocky self, which riled some fans who'd been waiting for autographs. Lily seemed to have the Liam snarl down to a tee."

New Noel Photo Exhibit

Noel Gallagher to feature in photo exhibition

Jack White and John Lennon pics are also on display

An iconic photo exhibition featuring Noel Gallagher, Bono, Jack White Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon is due to be launched in London.

Up to 50 vintage pictures of legendary musicians holding a Gibson guitar through the ages will be displayed at Blink Gallery from March 1 to 24.

The 'Gibson Through The Lens' exhibition also includes photos of Slash, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Elvis, Angus Young, BB King, Marc Bolan and Bob Dylan.

Entry into the exhibition is free, and open from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Friday and 12 midday to 6pm on Saturday.

A selection of limited signed shots by former NME snapper Kevin Westenberg, Neal Preston, Jim Marshall, Ross Halfin, Mick Rock and Baron Wolman will also be on sale.

Following the London exhibition 'Gibson Through The Lens' will travel to be exhibited in Paris in May, Berlin in July, New York in September and finally Los Angeles in November.

Gallagher Warns Brand To Stay Away From His Girlfriend

Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher has warned his womanising comedian pal Russell Brand to stay away from his girlfriend.

Long-haired British lothario Brand regularly tells Gallagher he has his eyes on his long-term girlfriend Sara MacDonald - but the Oasis mastermind claims Brand has no chance.

Gallagher says, "He seriously fancies my missus - to the point that he tells me she's out of my league. "Good luck Russell, you'll need it. It'll be f**king funny to watch."

Latest: Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has defended his art school education and political activism against accusations from Noel Gallagher he's boring fans.

The outspoken Oasis star fumed last week (08FEB07), "Thom Yorke sat at a piano singing, 'This is f**ked up,' for half an hour.

We all know that, Mr Yorke. "Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit their twiddling, going, 'We're all doomed,' at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play Creep.

Get over it." But Yorke is adamant his education has provided at least one vital lesson Gallagher would be wise to adopt. On Radiohead's website he retorts, "It taught me to respect other artists."

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Don't Look Back in Anger" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's guitarist, Noel Gallagher. Released as the fourth and final single from their hit second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? it was , released on the 19th February 1996. The song became the band's second single to reach #1 in the United Kingdom charts, and the first to feature Noel replacing Liam Gallagher on lead vocals. The title is perhaps a play on the song "Look Back in Anger", from David Bowie's Lodger album or on the play by John Osborne of the same title from which Bowie's song took inspiration.

Noel said of the song "[It] reminds me of a cross between 'All the Young Dudes' and summat the Beatles might've done." Of the character "Sally" referred to in the song he commented, "I don't actually know anybody called Sally. It's just a word that fitted, y'know, might as well throw a girl's name in there. It's gotta guarantee somebody a shag off a bird called Sally hasn't it?". Noel claims that the character "Lyla", from Oasis' 2005 single is the sister of Sally. In the interview on the DVD released with the special edition of Stop the Clocks, Noel also revealed that a girl approached him and asked him if Sally was the same girl as in the Stone Roses' track Sally Cinnamon. Noel replied that he'd never thought of that, but thought it was good anyway.



Noel admits that certain lines from the song are lifted from John Lennon: "I got this tape in The United States that had apparently been burgled from the Dakota Hotel and someone had found these cassettes. Lennon was starting to record his memoirs on tape. He's going on about 'trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head". I thought 'Thank you, I'll take that'!" "Revolution from me bed" most likely refers to Lennon's infamous bed-ins in 1969 , both in the quote and in the song. The piano during the intro of the song is from "Imagine". The chord progression for both the verse and the chorus are very close to the classical piece Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel only differing slightly at the end of each phrase.

The song has become a favourite at Oasis' live performances. Noel encourages the crowd to sing along and often keeps quiet during the chorus, allowing the fans instead to sing along while he focuses on his guitar playing. The volume of crowd noise that usually descends on the chorus at concerts is easily audible on the rendition of "Don't Look Back in Anger" on Familiar to Millions.


The lyric to the song charts the lyricist's trouble keeping a relationship alive on a tour, coupled with images from an unhappy childhood. For example, the line "Stand up beside the fireplace / Take that look from off your face" is taken from Peggy Gallagher's instructions to Noel when he would have his photograph taken next to the fireplace when he was a child. An unhappy child, Noel would have to be told by Peggy to take the miserable look from his face, so as to produce a suitable picture.

The video for the song is notable for featuring Patrick Macnee, the actor who played John Steed in the 1960s television series The Avengers, apparently a favourite of the band. Whilst filming the video, drummer Alan White met future wife Liz Atkins. They married 13th August 1997 at Studley Priory Hotel, Oxfordshire, but later divorced.

The song has been used in a huge number of television programmes since its original release — perhaps most notably, it played over the end credits of the final episode of the BBC Two drama serial Our Friends in the North in March 1996, the very week it was at the top of the UK charts.



The single cover is an homage to the incident where Ringo Starr briefly left The Beatles during the recording of The White Album; after the other three Beatles members successfully persuaded him to return, George Harrison decorated Ringo's drumkit in red, white and blue flowers to show their appreciation.

The B-side "Step Out" was originally intended for the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album but was taken off after Stevie Wonder demanded 10% of the royalties as the chorus bore a similarity to his hit "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".

Oasis became the first act since The Jam to perform two songs on the same showing of Top Of The Pops, performing "Don't Look Back In Anger", followed by their cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize", also on the single.

In a 2006 radio interview, Liam Gallagher said that it was him who came up with the line "so Sally can wait" as Noel was struggling with that particular line at the time. (Bootlegs of demos of the song feature Noel singing 'Crowley' — as in Aleister Crowley — rather than 'Sally' so there may be some truth in Liam's claim.) Noel confirms this on the bonus DVD, entitled Lock the Box, released with the Stop the Clocks retrospective album. In the interview with Colin Murray, Noel admits, "I was doing it in the sound check and the so Sally bit, I wasn't singing that...and he [Liam] says, 'Are you singing so Sally can wait?' and I said, 'No.' and he said, 'Well you should do.'"



In 2006, a poll by Q magazine voted "Don't Look Back in Anger" as the 20th best song of all time.

The song was included as the closing track on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.

You Can't Sing Sunshiiiine

Noel Gallagher has issued an ultimatum to brother Liam — sort your voice out or forget recording another Oasis album.

Noel was furious with Liam’s below-par performance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night.

He reckons the rocker’s vocals on hits including Cigarettes & Alcohol failed to match his status as a member of the band that won the Outstanding Contribution gong.

And he told Liam that he needs to rediscover the brilliant, roaring notes that made him the best frontman of his generation . . . otherwise Oasis are no more.

A source said: “Noel had some harsh words for Liam after the show.

“He thought Liam’s voice was too nasal and well off his best. He reckons his singing is becoming more pub karaoke than professional.

“Liam wanted to perform Songbird but Noel told him, ‘No chance’. That started a problem beforehand and then they had a huge row over who should keep the award.”

The source added: “The band had their own sound team so there was no excuse for Liam not being on the money. The arguments have rumbled on since and they’re barely speaking.”

I have to agree with Noel.

I thought Oasis were brilliant at the Brits, blasting out an explosion of sound at Earl’s Court. But the crowd’s singing drowned out Liam’s vocals.

Having watched it back on TV, he seemed short of breath and strained his voice to the point where he sounded like a caricature of himself. His swagger was still superb and attitude seeped from every pore.

But only Noel got his vocals spot-on during the short set. He absolutely nailed Don’t Look Back In Anger.

In the past six months Noel has been performing more solo gigs, which must irk his younger brother.

An Oasis album is rumoured for the end of 2007 — even though they fulfilled their album deal with Sony with Stop The Clocks — and other labels are queueing up to sign them. There was talk on Wednesday that Liam wasn’t too keen to accept the Brit award.

Perhaps that’s why his singing was not up to scratch.

Here’s hoping it was a one-off and he proves Noel wrong.

The buzz the lads created at the awards proved they are as popular as ever.

I’m sure Liam will shiiiine again.

Noel Gallagher has said that if Kasabian do their job properly, no one will need Oasis in a few years.

Though that might be overstating the case a little, there's no doubt few bands have ever been quite as keen as Kasabian to follow in the Mancunians' footsteps. They are just as quotable as the Gallaghers (famously slagging off everyone from The Strokes to Justin Timberlake), write the sort of anthems that can be sung on football terraces, and have had two Top Five albums.

On stage at this Shockwaves NME Awards Show, Kasabian were so fearsomely enthusiastic they made Oasis look like they should be settling down with their pipe and slippers.

Last time most fans saw the Leicester quartet they were headlining mammoth

Earl's Court down the road, so it was no surprise there seemed a genuine excitement about catching them in these far more intimate surroundings.

In typical Kasabian style, the band still threw themselves into the show like they had to fill a stadium. To excited cheers, singer Tom Meighan strutted on stage like the rock god he has always been in his head, eyeing up the audience as if issuing them with a challenge before throwing up his arms to signal proceedings had officially started.

Sounding like everything was turned up full - and then a bit more - Kasabian steamed through a set that seemed designed purposely to make eardrums bleed and even the most hesitant observer dance. Live, their grimy house beats and stomping, shoutalong choruses certainly sounded fiercer than on record too, equally brutal, brilliant and euphoric.

Noel will be glad to hear he's already a step closer to his retirement

Noel Gallagher makes more sense than any politician I've ever listened to.

In fact, the Oasis genius has so impressed me this week, I'm going to get over-excited, and say he should be knighted.

Balls to it, I'll go further: he should enter politics.

I'm sure Noel will think I'm a tit for saying a Sir would suit him and wouldn't even consider ditching the shade to don a suit to help run the country.

But I wish he would.

As well as slicing through celebrities, the man speaks on politics with a straightforward clarity that is inspirational to the ordinary bloke.

Please Noel, get involved. Your country needs you.

All the evidence says he would be brilliant at it. if you think I'm talking twaddle, then consider this.

After a lifetime of being barraged with abuse from Liam, policy battles at the House of Commons would hold no fear for him.

On war: First-hand experience with Liam
On drugs: Like most politicians, done loads.
On employment: Signed on for years.

And if it ever got too heated he could fall back on: "If you don't watch it, my brother will come down for you."

Seriously, this bloke is cool in a way I never knew existed.

Yes, he's got the whole rock star thing going on, but while he was closing the Brits with Oasis on ITV, a pre-recorded interview with him was going out on the BBC's Newsnight.

And he did what politicians never do: intelligently told it exactly how it is, in a way that everyone could understand and no one could argue with.

He also reiterated a point I made in this colum last month - people are more interested in reality TV than they are in how their country is run.

We already know he's got mass appeal - just look at the number of albums sold and stadia filled.

Not only did his band help to make guitar music cool again, but they also inspired just about every group that was nominated at the Brit Awards.

Are you really telling me that he couldn't get those same kids to care about thier country?

Noel - at the very least, just keep speaking up.

You've made me take note and I don't listen to anyone.

You really could be the voice Working Class Man no longer has in Goverment.

Oasis were undisputed kings of the Brits - but is their rock crown slipping? I only ask because I managed to get my hands on the band's allimportant rider - the definitive list of their backstage demands - and let's just say it makes for interesting reading.

Liam, 34 and brother Noel, 39 - honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to Music award - must be going soft in their old age.

I hear they ordered soothing eye masks from cosmetic giant Estee Lauder to prepare for their big night. The £22-apop masks promise to "refresh skin diminishing puffiness and fatigue".

Luckily, the lads redeemed themselves since the rider also included six bottles of Veuve Cl icquot champagne, 100 bottles of Becks lager, 12 bottles of wine and a Thousand Marlboro Lights. Celebrations kicked off in the dressing room where stars including Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, actor Keith Allen and daughter Lily were invited to join the fun.

Kelly Osbourne also popped in, but was left red-faced after trying to blag extra invites, with Liam screeching: "It's you and your plus one only." Later, Liam and girlfriend Nicole Appleton, 32, went back to their hotel before continuing the party at Mayfair's Cuckoo club, where Nicole and best pal Kate Thornton dancing on chairs, cheered on by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

And Liam had to step in when Snow Patrol's drunken Gary Lightbody was hugging everyone in sight - and not letting go. Our spy says: "Liam had to tell Gary to stop making a twit of himself."

Naomi Campbell: 'Find My Imposter'

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has urged vigilant partygoers to find an imposter who is attending lavish events pretending to be her.

The feisty beauty is "extremely concerned" about her imposter, after it emerged the fake Campbell tried in vain to attend Oasis' Brit Awards after-show party on Wednesday (14FEB07).

She was refused entry by the band member Noel Gallagher. Campbell says, "You gotta find the imposter for me. Who is she, who is she?

I can't believe she's masquerading around town as me. "I wasn't even in London on Wednesday during the Brits as I was on a modelling shoot in Paris. It's not right."
