Punkband Records Wonderwall Cover

In covering the Oasis hit “Wonderwall” for the compilation album “Punk Goes ’90s,” the band Cartel was making a subtle point.

“I’m the youngest member of the band at 22, but we are old souls,” said Cartel’s Will Pugh. “We’re not like Sum 41 or Simple Plan. The bands we admire and want to be like are Pearl Jam or Oasis.”

Cartel’s youthful pop, exemplified in the band’s burgeoning hit “Honestly,” has caught on within the likewise youthful pop-punk crowd, but songs such as “The Minstrel’s Prayer” and epic two-part “Q” and “A” reveal something deeper within the band’s sound........

Noel Prepares

Noel Gallagher is prepared for fatherhood - this time.

The Oasis guitarist, who announced on last week he is expecting a baby with girlfriend Sara McDonald, recently admitted it felt like a "bad dream" when he had his first child, seven-year-old daughter Anais, with ex-wife Meg Matthews.

He told BBC Radio 1: "Your whole life changes forever in a blink of an eye. Girls have nine months to prepare for being a mother. Whereas blokes think up until the last minute that it's all a mistake. That someone is going to come in and say, 'Come through to this room sir, it's all been a bad dream.' But it doesn't happen and you think, 'Oh bugger.' You really do."

The couple, who have been dating for seven years, waited until after Sara had her three month scan and knew the baby was OK before telling family and friends the joyous news.

Noel's brother and Oasis bandmate Liam has three children, son Gene with his fiancée Nicole Appleton, son Lennon with his ex-wife Patsy Kensit and daughter Molly, who was conceived after Liam had a brief fling with singer Lisa Moorish in 1998.

She told Virgin Radio's Christian O'Connell yesterday: "He does like a sing-song, especially (Oasis's) Champagne Supernova.

"He sings at the top of his voice around the house." Please Wayne, save it for the shower...

Russell Watson Covers Wonderwall At Hometown Show

Coming close to death is bound to change a man – and for Salford’s original pop-opera god Russell Watson it means a vibrant new lease of life.

Fans may have feared his diagnosis with a brain tumour last September would keep the self-taught tenor out of the spotlight.

But clearly Russell’s remarkable recovery has been spurred on by a determination to get back on stage, entertaining fans – just six months after treatment.

And back at the M.E.N. Arena on Saturday night it was stirring stuff from the man they call "The Voice".

Bounding onto the stage in an all-black suit to open his homecoming show with That’s Life, there is the vigour and enthusiasm of a man who knows he’s been given a second chance at life.

The concert was a good mix of his new "swing" songs from his latest album like Smile and Let There Be Love, and the classical greats that made his name – highlights are Panis Angelicus and Ave Maria, with Russell backed by his live orchestra.

The conclusion is his perfecto Nessun Dorma – that leads to a double encore just for that song alone. We then get an impressive four more encores – including a rip-roaring Try A Little Tenderness and even a nod to Oasis – a beautifully melodic Wonderwall. The Gallaghers would be proud.

This was a triumphant return for Russell, his emphatic chance to prove The Voice has only be strengthened by his trials.

(What's The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis came 124th on the list.

This is what they had to say about the album.

This big rock candy mountain of an album justifies some if by no means all of the poses and pretentious statements made by Manchester's natural-born rock & roll deities. A dramatic attempt to rekindle the flames of the original British Invasion, Morning Glory rolls 30 years of Britpop tradition into one irresistible (if achingly self-conscious) whole. "Wonderwall" can be read as a Beatles tribute, "Don't Look Back in Anger" feels like a Mott The Hoople anthem and "She's Electric" and "Morning Glory" are chewy pop confections.

Todays pop stars have a long way to go to catch the best-selling blokes in pop history.

Elvis Presley's 10,311,196 singles make him all-time No 1 in the VH1 poll, followed by The Beatles and Cliff Richard.

Best placed youngsters were Westlife in forth, Take That sixth and Oasis at eight.

But Elton John,59, Michael Jackson, 48, and The Rolling Stones all made the Top 10.

Liam 'N' Noel's £10K Baby Bet

Dream Date For Baby

Liam Gallagher has said he'll give his brother £10,000 if Noel's second child is born on John Lennons birthday.

The 34-year-old Oasis frontman made the promise after Noel, 39, joked it was his 'ambition' for his child with gorgeous PR executive Sara MacDonoald to be born on October 9.

Earlier this week we revealed Sara, 31, is three months pregnant - and the Gallagher brothers are very excited.

An insider said: "Noel told Liam he would love it if the baby was born on John Lennon's birthday.

"He said it was an ambition. Liam giggled and said he'd give Noel £10,000 if his wish came true.

"Liam and his partner Nicole Appleton are thrilled to bits for Noel and Sara."

Noel already has a daughter, Anais by ex-wife Meg Mathews, 40.

Ghost

But it's actually Liam who is the bigger fan of the Beatles hero, who was shot dead in New York on December 8, 1980.

He and his ex-wife Patsy Kensit have a seven-year-old son called Lennon after his idol.

Liam even claims he was once spooked by Lennon's ghost.

He said: "I was at a mates house having a kip. I remember getting up and feeling weird.

"I turned round and there I was, lying on the bed, and I sort of fell back into my body. there was a presence there and it was Lennon."

As Liam, er, matures with age, pals say he is becoming even more inspired by the Beatle's creed of non-violence.

Our mole added: "Liam and Noel are softening as they get older and Liam is into this whole peace lark."

When Liam met Yoko Ono, 74, two years ago, he revealed he felt "protective" towards her.

And when Liam's son lennon was born, she sent babys clothes.

Well, depending on the arrival of the new mini-Noel - be it a he or she - Yoko could well be sending more baby booty.

Noel Happy To Miss The Glasto Show

As the speculation builds about which bands are headlining this year's Glastonbury festival, TheBuzz can reveal that event organiser Emily Eavis cannot rely on any favours from Oasis.

The brtitpop group said that the "last thing" they wanted to do this summer was play at the june festival, when we met them at the NME awards last week. Noel Gallagher, who attended the do with his girlfriend Sara MacDonald, said: "It's just not what we want to do anymore.

"Were definitely not doing Glastonbury this year. We are not doing any festivals this summer. They are too much work."

Noel's comments fuel speculation that the band could be heading for a split. As they released their greatest hits compilation Stop The Clocks last november and Noel has recently performed a series of acoustic gigs without his brother Liam, some have questioned how long the band will stick together.

"When Oasis headlined Glastonbury in 2004 the reviews were bad and it resulted in a big falling out for the boys "says theBuzz's music insider. "They realise the pressure is on them to play from their fans but they just feel that its not for them this year.

"They have been together for a long time and its been a bumpy journey. The don't enjoy it that much."

Liam The Nice Guy (13yrs Ago)

I have unearthed some dynamite footage of the young Oasis – as Mr Nice Guys.

This first live video was made in 1994 when the Gallaghers were in their early twenties.

A nervous Liam, without a hint of a swagger, approaches the microphone to sing in front of bemused Sony bigwigs for the first time.

Then the foul-mouthed singer politely Thanks the bosses for listening to them.

Liam had just signed to Creation Records with brother NOEL and the original Oasis members.

To see the Oasis video click here

Creation was in partnership with Sony. But he hadn’t yet developed his trademark growl and stage arrogance that would make him a superstar.

The tape belonged to Noel, who gave it to pal David Bosmond — and it is due to be auctioned on eBay tonight.

This original footage shows Noel, Liam, drummer Tony McCarroll, bassist Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan and rhythm guitarist Paul “Bonehead" ARTHURS performing a mini-gig at a Sony seminar at Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.

It shows them being introduced to a small audience of Sony staff and guests, who are told the band have just been signed and are the next big hope for British music.

In a nervous performance of the first track Shakermaker, bushy-browed Liam gets his timing wrong.

He recovers and the band — now one of the biggest-selling in British music history — rip into classics Bring It On Down, Digsy’s Dinner, Live Forever, Cigarettes And Alcohol and Supersonic.

Liam changes the lyrics in anthem Live Forever from “We’ll see things they’ll never see” to “Take two sugars in my tea.”

Video owner David told me: “It’s been gathering dust for years. It was Noel’s only copy — he’d promised me Guigsy’s guitar but couldn’t get it, so he gave me this instead.”

The version of Bring It On Down was later reproduced on a DVD of the band’s first album, Definitely Maybe, while Live Forever was featured on a special edition bonus DVD.

But this VHS tape of the entire mini-gig was given to Noel.

He took it to David’s house in Bonehead’s blue BMW, referred to in the lyrics for Oasis’s first single Supersonic.

The 13-year-old original VHS, taped two months before Oasis released their first song, will go on eBay at 8pm tonight.

Former draftsman David said: “Tony McCarroll stayed at my house when he left the band to hide away from all the madness for a bit.

“It was only when I was going through old boxes I found the tape again.”

In the footage, an announcer is heard saying: “I know my job is to hype the s**t out of the next act, which is ours, but they don’t really need that.

“They’re from Manchester, they’re Oasis and I hope you think they’re as great as we do.”

Who could have known how great they would be 13 years later?

Oasis Voted Best Gig Of All Time In Scotland

01: Oasis, King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, 31 May 1993

When the idea of listing Scotland's 20 most significant gigs was first mooted, one show in particular leapt immediately to mind, and refused to budge from deliberations. Oasis's legendary gig at King Tut's in Glasgow looms so large over Scottish pop lore that it had to be the No 1 choice of our panel. Because it is - no matter how devalued the term - legendary, with all the baggage that such a description comes with.

So, as Noel Gallagher once wrote, what's the story? The most commonly cited version of events has five mouthy Mancunians rolling up at the venue without a booking and gatecrashing the bill, which already comprises three other bands. They go on first in front of a sparse early-evening crowd. Alan McGee, head of Creation Records, is there to see his latest signings 18 Wheeler (only remembered now as the ultimate bridesmaids in pop), but is so taken aback by the uninvited guests that he whips out the chequebook there and then, and the rest is Britpop wars, tea with the Prime Minister, two great albums then a steady creative decline, and a seemingly unassailable status as the nation's favourite band.

It may have gone down like that - or Oasis may have been invited to the showcase, and Alan McGee might have known precisely what he was getting into... With so few people in attendance to verify the details, the enigma of Oasis at Tut's has snowballed, to the extent that the venue was recently included in New York Magazine's list of the top ten must-visit attractions in the world.

Aren't all legends subject to a bit of embroidery along the way? What actually happened or how good, bad or indifferent the gig was would only get in the way of a fantastic, even romantic story. But if you really must know what it was like to be at Scotland's most significant gig of all time, why not ask one of the thousands who say they were there?

New Order Star Hook Creates Bassist-Heavy Supergroup

New Order bass player Peter Hook has created a new British indie rock supergroup with The Smiths star Andy Rourke and original Stone Roses bass player Gary 'Mani' Mounfield.

The three bass guitarists are recording tracks with some of Britain's top singers, like The Charlatons' Tim Burgess and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, for the project, called Freebase.

Hook tells Billboard.com, "We've been working with some great singers. Tim Burgess has done a vocal for us. Liam Gallagher, I believe, is doing one, (as is) Ian Brown and Bobby Gillespie.

"We're going to get them up on stage as well. It's nice that Mani and I can call in a few favours." Meanwhile, Hook and former Monaco bandmate David Potts will play their first shows together in seven years at Manchester, England's Hard Rock Cafe later this month (21MAR07).

Noel Gallagher To Be Dad Again

Oasis star Noel Gallagher is going to be a father again.

The guitarist and his long-term girlfriend Sara McDonald, who have been dating for seven years, have announced they are expecting their first child together.

The excited couple waited until after Sara had her three month scan to tell family and friends the news.

A close friend of the couple said: "Noel and Sara are really happy. Neither of them want to get married but both felt it was the right time to start a family."

The baby will be Sara's first child. Noel already has a seven-year-old daughter, Anais, with ex-wife Meg Matthews.

Meanwhile, Noel's brother Liam is reportedly set to open a beauty salon.

The millionaire Oasis frontman is said to have purchased premises in North London and plans to get started on the project straight away.

Liam has apparently told fiancée Nicole Appleton - who he has a son Gene, with - she can run the salon with her sister Natalie.

News of the proposed salon comes a day after their recently reunited band All Saints was dropped by record company Parlophone.

Meg Has Got A Real Wonder Hall

Who says Meg Mathews has no class?

The ex-wife of Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher uses her divorce dosh to fill her house with tacky objects.

She reveals that she forked out a fortune for a Chanel surfboard for the hallway to the house Noel bought for her in trendy Primrose Hill, north London.

She also boasts of having a pink flourescent light spelling “b****cks” above the stairs.

Oh, and let’s not forget the huge print of her bare breast she has on the wall outside the bathroom.

Quite what seven-year-old daughter Anais makes of it all I can’t imagine.

All Saints And Oasis Now Without Labels

Looks like Liam and Nicole will shopping for a new label together.

Girl group All Saints have been dumped by their record label.

They made a comeback in November after a five year split, saying they had patched up the differences which had caused their split.

Their releases failed to light up the charts, however.

Member Nicole Appleton is engaged to Oasis star Liam Gallagher, whose brother Noel has confirmed that he and his wife are expected their second child.
