Happy Birthday Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs

Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, born 23 June 1965, Burnage, Manchester, England and is one of the founding members of English rock group Oasis and rhythm guitar player from 1991-1999.

He is almost exclusively known by his nickname Bonehead, a reference to the short back and sides haircut his father made him have when he was young.

Childhood And Early Musical Career

Arthurs was born in Manchester to Irish Catholic emigrants. His father worked in the demolition industry. Arthurs supports Manchester United.

He left school in 1981 and worked as a plasterer. He started his first band in 1984 -called Pleasure and Pain. Around this time he began a relationship with Kate, who he would later marry. In the late 1980s, while working as a building contractor, he started a band with his friends, Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass), Tony McCaroll (drums) and Chris Hutton (vocals). They called themselves The Rain, after the Beatles' B-side. During this period, Arthurs owned a van which he used to transport the band's equipment to Hutton's garage where they would perform. The van was nicknamed The Bonemobile and was decorated by Guigsy with a psychdelic mural when they took it to The Stone Roses' legendary 1990 gig at Spike Island.

Oasis And Role Therein

When Hutton quit, he was replaced by Liam Gallagher. Liam changed the band's name to Oasis. Gallagher and Arthurs teamed up as co-songwriters. However, the band was still unsuccessful until Gallagher encouraged his brother Noel, who had just come back from travelling the world as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets, to join the band. Noel brought with him a collection of songs that were to make the band famous. Arthurs remembers the first songs Noel played to him being Live Forever and All Around The World.

He claims his favorite Oasis song to play was Columbia as the rhythm guitar part only consists of three chords. However, tour manager Ian Robertson has claimed that the first time Noel performed Champagne Supernova for the rest of the band - an acoustic version on the tour bus - Arthurs broke down and cried.

The Arthurs' front room was used on the iconic cover of Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe. Arthurs had painted and plastered the room himself.

When Oasis performed the song "Whatever" for Top of the Pops, they mimed and one of the cello players from the symphony was replaced by Arthurs, who clearly had no idea how the instrument is supposed to be played. Towards the end of the song, he gave up the pretense and started using the stick to conduct. A woman plays his rhythm guitar.

Nonetheless, Arthurs is a multi-instrumentalist and is credited as having played piano and mellotron on (What's the Story) Morning Glory? and can be seen on piano in the video for "Don't Look Back in Anger". He was supposed to take lead vocals on one Oasis track, "Bonehead's Bank Holiday" - a jocular ode on the double vinyl issue of (What's the Story) Morning Glory. However, in the end Noel sang the song as Arthurs had been nervous about his first vocal performane and when Liam Gallagher took him for some drinks to calm his nerves they overdid it- samples of their drunken singing were used on the track. Noel claims to enjoy the song for its comedic value "Particularly the way he sings it, because he's beyond tone deaf." He highlights it as Oasis' "Ringo track".

On top of his role as musician he also fulfilled the vital role of band diplomat, saying "If it ever kicked off between Noel and Liam I was never scared to dive in. I was renowned for it."

Although Noel Gallagher has downplayed his relatonship with Arthurs in recent years (claiming to have shared only a few hours of conversation with him in their six years in the same band, a claim he has always made -more convicingly - about Guigsy), he gave rather a different impression in 1995, stating "being in a band with [Bonehead] is not miserable, 'cos that guy is like Peter Sellers and Rigsby combined, with less morals with either of them - he's just outrageous". Noel is also godfather to the Arthurs' first child, Lucy Oasis Arthurs (b. January 23, 1995) and sometimes claims to have written Don't Go Away at Arthurs' request, for Arthurs' mother, Delia, who was dying of cancer at the time.

Post-Oasis

Arthurs left the band in 1999, during the recording of Oasis' fourth album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. In his official statement he claimed he wanted to spend more time with his family (his first son, Jude Arthurs - named after the Beatles' song Hey Jude - was born August 12, 1997). However, Noel Gallagher claims Arthurs left after a drunken row with Noel regarding a drink and drugs ban set by the band during recording. Noel had intended to ease the recording process by keeping Liam sober, and to make it fair, he insisted the rest of the band do likewise.

Arthurs could not cope and took to taunting Liam, drinking red wine and kicking other crew members doors in the early hours to pour booze over them[citation needed]. When Noel turned the tables and broke into Arthurs' room, waking him up by pouring wine over his head, Arthurs was so angry that he quit. His guitar parts were subsequently re-recorded by Gallagher[citation needed].

Arthurs was replaced by Gem Archer, who was thereafter pointedly referred to as a "professional". The rest of the band downplayed the reaction to his departure, Noel commenting "it's hardly Paul McCartney leaving the Beatles". However, his status in the band was underlined when Guigsy also left, less than a month later, unwilling to continue without him.

Arthurs now lives in Manchester where he has built a studio under his house and formed Moondog One (named after Johnny and the Moondogs, one of the Beatles' former titles, before they rose to fame), which also includes The Smiths' Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke.

As of 2004 Arthurs teamed up with Thai superstar Sek Loso to play rhythm guitar alongside Loso's new English bandmates. The group is touring Asia, Europe, and the US in search of a label deal.

In early 2007 Bonehead had a visible presence in the North West of England for the first time since leaving Oasis 8 years previously. Bonehead's support for Andy Rourke's Versus Cancer fundraising concert saw the pair Busking together in Manchester's Cathedral gardens to raise Cancer awareness and to fundraise for Manchester's Christies Hospital. On March 30th 2007, the Versus Cancer concert was held at Manchester's MEN arena. Bonehead surprisingly played bass guitar (rather than the trademark rhythm guitar from his Oasis days) in a two-song-set early in the night. He was in a band billed as Electric Milk Band, which also featured former members of Happy Mondays amongst others. While Bonehead seemed at ease playing the instrument, it was so quiet that it was virtually inaudible in the mix. He also appeared to lap-up the crowds adulation (chants of "Bonehead" were heard as soon as the band walked onto the stage).

He has been playing DJ sets in clubs, most recently in London. His playlist heavily features Oasis classics like Live Forever, and collaborations between the Gallagher brothers and artists like Death in Vegas and The Chemical Brothers.

He also presents a radio show on BBC Radio Manchester with Terry Christian, Natalie-eve and Michelle Hussey. The show is Manchester Music and has had fellow Manchester Music artists as guests including intastella, members of Happy Mondays, The Smiths and The Charlatans amongst others. The show can be heard on Saturday nights at 10pm.

Zak Starkey Drums On Paul Weller And Graham Coxon Collaborations

Recorded for EMI's Regal Singles Club, the track is the latest in a series of 7-inch singles by either emerging artists or, as in this case, one-off collaborations.

The ex-Jam and Style Council frontman and former Blur guitarist have pooled their talents for the new track, titled "This Old Town".

The track, which will also be available as a download, features Zak Starkey on drums, moonlighting from his day jobs in Oasis and The Who.

Limited to 5000 copies, the release will also feature the tracks "Each New Morning" [written by Coxon] and "Black River" [by Weller].

Talking about the collaboration, Coxon said: "As a long time admirer of Paul I never dared imagine getting a chance to work with him so I was bricking it when we first met.

"But he is an absolute gent and a shockingly great singer and musician. It's been a total pleasure."

Weller added: "I've always been a big fan of Grahams and love his work so it was exciting for me to work on something new with him."

"This Old Town" is released as a download on July 2nd. The limited 7-inch vinyl will follow on July 30th.

Oasis watch as band pack out the Astoria

The Coral made their live London return last night, packing out the Astoria and treating them to a concoction of previous hits and new songs.

Watched by the whole of Oasis, James Skelly bounded on stage brandishing his maracas, before simply introducing the band with "Hello, we're The Coral."

The band dived headfirst into tunes from their debut self-titled album, including 'Spanish Main', 'Simon Diamond' and 'Goodbye'.

The band also played tracks from 2003's chart-topping 'Magic And Medicine', including the singles 'Don't Think You're The First' and 'Pass It On'.

New songs from the forthcoming 'Roots And Echoes' album were simply introduced and rapturously received by the swelling crowd, and included new single 'Who's Gonna Find Me' in addition to 'Jacqueline' and 'In The Rain'.

Briefly addressing the rising temperature of the venue, Skelly exclaimed "It's fucking hot!" before rewarding fans with 'Dreaming Of You' and 'In The Morning'.

The band quickly returned to the stage, the encore consisting of 'I Remember When' and 'Bill McCai'.

Support came in the form of Kate Nash, who graced the stage earlier on in the evening.

Radio 2 Celebrates Sgt Pepper's 40th With A Little Help From...Oasis

To mark Radio 2’s 40th anniversary of the Beatles’ seminal album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” Oasis have recorded a version of the George Harrison penned classic “Within You, Without You”.

The track’s producer is Geoff Emerick, engineer on the original album. He used the same four-track mixing desk and tape machine to record the track in Abbey Road’s Studio 2, where the original song was also recorded. A Radio 2 documentary on the re-recording of all tracks from Sgt. Pepper’s is available on the BBC website link below. Oasis are just one of the acts contributing towards the re-recordings from the album, along with Stereophonics, Libertines, Razorlight, Zutons and others.

Hooky Still Needs A Singer

Manchester supergroup Freebase are considering drastic action to find a new lead singer

The group, made up of legendary bassists Andy Rourke, ex of The Smiths, Mani, ex of The Stone Roses and Peter Hook, now ex of New Order, had been joined on vocals by a guy called "Rich" from Wigan - but he has parted company with the band.

And while the bassists have recruited a raft of celebrity big hitters for their planned album to sing - including The Charlatans' Tim Burgess, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and Oasis' Liam Gallagher, they still need a full time vocalist.

Hooky says: "I might have to do one of those Pop Idol things - Indie Idol, where the hopefuls would have to be obnoxious, drunk, fall out of clubs, be a complete reprobate - that's what I'm looking for, I don't care whether they can sing or not - it's all about image."

He laughs: "I don't think it'd be very good for the kids though. Maybe I won't put that idea forward to Granada."

Noel In Album Talks With Spidey's Super-Producer

Noel Gallagher will meet top producer Dave Sardy in London on Friday to discuss the next Oasis album.

I can reveal the LA-based knob-twiddler is flying in from the US especially to talk with the Oasis axeman.

Noel, 40, was top draw at Monday's Mojo Awards at The Brewery in London.

While many of the attendees were closer to collecting their buss pass than a gong, Noel looked every inch the rock legend he is.

Speaking about the new Oasis music he revealed: "We start talking about the new album on Friday.

"I've got 17 songs ready everybody else has three or four each f**k knows when it'll be out - 2010. Don't hold your breath."

However the follow-up to 2005's Don't Believe The Truth looks set to come sooner rather then later because of this meeting.

Sardy produced the immense return to form collection last time around and has stayed in close contact with Noel.

Since then he has crafted the Spiderman 3 and Casino Royale soundtracks, plus studio collections from Wolfmother and Jet - who play Hard Rock's Hyde Park Calling in London this weekend. If both sides were to team up again I reckon it'd be a record entirely worth waiting for.

Noel partied at the Mojo's aftershow with his stunning pregnant girlfriend Sara MacDonald, 31.

She was glowing with the first flushes of pre-motherhood.

Jesting Noel said the pair have been discussing names for the baby.

And he claimed:"I'm thinking of Genghis, Ghandi or Goliath for the kid.

"Something with a G has got a ring to it."

I think he was joking.

One topic the Manc guitarist did admit to pulling a leg over was buying his beloved football team Manchester City.

Noel declared: "That was a joke. If I did have 90million quid I'd buy myself an aeroplane."

Top Man.

Truckin Mad Fer It

Boozed-up Noel Gallagher showed he's still mad fer it as he climbed on a clamping truck after the Mojo Awards do.

The merry 40-year-old Oasis star then waved peace signs to smiling passers-by. Earlier he downed free drinks at the music mag's bash in East London's Brewery venue where he presented the Les Paul award to Fleetwood Mac guitar legend Peter Green.

Rocker Noel Is On The Wagon

Noel Gallagher may be a legendary caner but he was quick to try to jump on this wagon at 4am yesterday after a booze-up with Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno.

The Oasis star began at the Mojo awards in London, took in Coral gig and ended at Soho House via the Groucho Club.

Shame he missed the Mojo afterparty, Amy Winehouse and Bjork became best pals after challenging each other to a game of pool. Now that’s what I call rock ’n’ roll.

Noel Gallagher Slams Lack Of Guitar Heroes

Noel Gallagher is dissatisfied with the dearth of good current guitarists.

Before presenting Peter Green with the Les Paul guitarists' prize at Mojo Honours, Gallagher told Teletext: "My favourite recent guitarist would be any of the ones in The Coral, especially Bill Ryder-Jones. He's brilliant.

"But there's not many to choose from. The age of the guitar hero has been dead for a while, you know?"

Soap Star Would Love To Play Liam Gallagher In Biopic

Rob James-Collier would love to play Liam Gallagher in a biopic film of his life.

The 'Coronation Street' star - who plays Underworld factory boss Liam Connor - is a huge Oasis fan and thinks he looks similar to his hero.

Rob told Britain's Soaplife magazine: "Before I come on Corrie some people though I was a bit like Liam so if there's a film of him I'd love to do it.

I love early Oasis."

But the 28-year-old may have trouble getting into character as he does not share the 'Mad Fer It' Manchunian's two greatest skills - singing and fighting.

Rob said: "I can't sing and I can't dance. Just the thought of it scares me.

"And I'm the softest lad you'll ever meet!

"When it comes to fights I'm a runner. When in doubt - get out!"

The sexy soap star - who scooped the Sexiest Male Award at this year's British Soap Awards - is currently dating a fashion designer, but has promised to keep her identity a secret.

He said: "She says she doesn't want jealous girls coming looking for her!

"I think she's bigging me up a bit there!"

A Reminder For Oasis Fans Going To Glastonbury

Lucky Oasis fans at Glastonbury Festival will be amongst the first to have a chance to see the full-length (94 minute) version of the band’s documentary tour film, “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down”, when it is screened at 2am on Sunday 24th June on the massive outdoor screen on the festival site.

“Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” was directed by renowned promo director Baillie Walsh, and compiled from a year’s filming with the band on their mammoth “Don’t Believe The Truth” world tour 2005/6. It follows one of the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands behind the scenes and in front of the fans, across the globe. With unique access to the band throughout the tour, “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” is the ultimate Oasis documentary and a must see for fans.

This will be one of the only opportunities this year to see the film prior to its release later this year on dvd, and the next best thing to having the band play live at the festival.

Oasis Prepare To Enter The Studio

But warn fans not to hold their breath…

Oasis have revealed that they will begin work on their new album next month.

According to the band’s guitarist, Noel Gallagher, the Manchester band will enter the studio on July 3rd.

Gallagher has warned fans, however, that the follow-up to 2005’s, ‘Don’t Believe The Truth,’ might not hit the shelves for a while.

He told the BBC: “The songs are written... but don't hold your breath because the last album took three-and-half-years and three goes.”

"It would be great if it was done by the end of the year and we could get out on the road by next summer, but that's insane wishful thinking."
