Oasis Pair Invited To Break Record

Organisers of a world record attempt are hoping rock star brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will join them in Ireland this week as their ancestral clan unites for a colossal get-together.
More than 10,000 emails and letters have been sent around the world inviting Gallaghers to Co Donegal on Saturday for the latest international same-surname gathering.
The Oasis duo have been asked to attend but the man behind the massive family do is remaining tight lipped about the rock stars.
"We've invited a couple of boys from Manchester, and that's all I'm saying," organiser Adrian Gallagher said.
The aim of the Gallagher Global Gathering is to beat the record set by the Welsh last year when 1,224 Joneses turned up to an event in Cardiff.
"It's not a matter of keeping up with the Joneses, it's a question of beating them," Mr Gallagher said.
Chairman of the gathering, Donegal priest Father Sean O'Gallachoir, joked when told of the current record: "I could get that in the parish."
Over the last two and a half years, emails have been sent to Irish groups in Canada, Australia and the US, more than 8,500 letters have been sent to the UK and 2,000 around Ireland.
The Gallagher quest also reached international airwaves including an interview on Japanese radio while American broadcasters ABC are planning to film the event.
"The Japanese like the idea of family and culture because some people over there think they are beginning to loose the connected part of their culture," Mr Gallagher said. Gallagher, originally a name associated with the north-west of Ireland, has spread around the world and the clan can trace its roots back to the legendary Irish king Niall Of The Nine Hostages.

Bon Jovi Attacks Oasis, Robbie Williams And Beckham

Singer Jon Bon Jovi has launched a scathing attack at British rockers Oasis and pop star Robbie Williams - insisting their music is so bad they "couldn't fill a bar".
The Livin' On A Prayer hitmaker also hits out at troubled Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty and pokes fun at soccer ace David Beckham in the new issue of Glamour magazine.
He says of Williams, "That guy? He couldn't fill a bar. He couldn't even sell 500 tickets. "(Oasis) couldn't fill a bar, either - and they're full of themselves.
He adds of Doherty, "We're not familiar of anything other than his antics and the fact that he's always in trouble - I've never heard a single one of his songs."
But Bon Jovi's most bitter comments were reserved for LA Galaxy's Beckham, who he ridiculed by asking, "Is he past his prime?"

Is Noel Gallagher To Rich To Write?

To be creative, you must be unhappy; to be unhappy, you must be poor. Therefore, you must be short on cash to be a good musician because a band that lacks creativity will end up…with no money? English rockers The Kooks seem aptly named, because their frontman Luke Pritchard certainly comes across as a little off-side. According to Pritchard, Oasis star Noel Gallagher can no longer write successful songs because he has far too much money to be creative. It is for this reason that he wants The Kooks to record as much music as they can before they become famous and are stripped of all artistic abilities. Pritchard recently told Music-News.com, "He wrote all the songs before he got big. You can't write about having a shit time when you're living in a mansion."
First of all, I’m not sure Noel Gallagher has or ever will be happy, so right away it’s an odd claim. Then there’s the obvious fact that all the money in the world does not guarantee happiness, as evidenced by all of the problems within celebrity culture. And finally, since when has it been a rule that chart topping hits be singularly about “having a shit time?” Of course there are a lot of powerfully emotional songs that unfortunately deal with dark issues, but surely musicians don’t depend on tragedy for success. Or do they? I for one am not ready to accept that, so I’m looking for Oasis to prove Pritchard wrong with their next album, slated for release sometime in 2008.

Jonny Wilkinson "I'm One Of Oasis's Biggest Fans"

As a rugby player, he's the perfectionist who can't stop practising. But as a pianist, he's happy simply to fool around with his brother in their home studio. The World Cup-winner can play all right, just don't ask him to sing ...
How did you come to take up music?
I asked my older brother, Mark, to buy me a guitar for my birthday in 2003. It was around six months before the World Cup and I started playing because the pressure was building and I needed a release. When I began practising, I was convinced my fingers would never master it, that I hadn't got an ear for music, I hadn't got any rhythm. But it's a skill that can be learnt. I don't have a musical ear - which is why I don't sing - but I now have an understanding of how music works. That helped me to move on to the piano; I started reading about how to form chords and scales and now I can pick out a tune.
What music do you like listening to?
My tastes are quite mainstream. I like Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight, and a bit of old-school rap. I enjoy the music I used to listen to on my parents' old records: Dire Straits, the Beatles, all that. And I'm one of Oasis's biggest fans. They're never going to lose it - they're timeless. I haven't been to many concerts or gigs, but I went to see them in Newcastle once.

Kooks Star: 'Noel Gallahger Is Too Rich To Write'

Oasis star Noel Gallagher is too rich to write chart-topping songs, according to The Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard.
Pritchard wants to compose as much material as he can, before his band become too successful - because he believes wealth sapped Gallagher's creativity.
He says, "He wrote all the songs before he got big. You can't write about having a s**t time when you're living in a mansion."

And The Mercury Nominees Are...

The View: Hats Off To The Buskers
The indie rock scene is bursting at the seams but these boys have the best tunes since the Arctics. Everyday concerns turned into hits.
SFTW quizzes singer Kyle Falconer:
Describe the place you grew up in.
We’re all from a place called Dryburgh in Dundee. People think we had a really hard time growing up but it was just a normal housing scheme.
We’d just drink cider, kick footballs and hang around on the steps. We were always in trouble, climbing on roofs, that sort of thing.
Why did you get into making music?
We all used to play together when we were at school. We never had any intention of making money — we just did it because we enjoyed it.
We used to play Beatles and Oasis covers and it went from there really.
How did you get your break?
This has become a bit of a legend now. We were just standing outside the Babyshambles tour bus when they played Dundee and we asked Pete Doherty if he’d listen to our demo.
I was stuttering, I couldn’t even work the CD player. Pete passed on the demos to label boss James Endeacott and he signed us when he started his new label 1965.
In a nutshell, describe your album.
Well, we did the album with Owen Morris who produced Oasis’s Definitely Maybe. We were playing at 1965’s launch party and Owen turned up p****d.
Two days later he said he wanted to do our album. We write songs about what we know. We’re a band for people to hold on to.
How did you feel about being nominated?
It’s all a bit new to me, I’ve never really followed any kind of awards before but I’m really grateful to be nominated. It’s flattering.
What would it mean to win?
We haven’t thought about it, but it would be great to win it. It’s one of those prizes that’s actually about the music rather than everything else that goes on around bands.
Which other nominees do you admire most?
We really like Arctic Monkeys. Great songs and the right attitude.
Which musician, alive or dead, would you most like to meet?
We like loads of old stuff, bands like The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Clash. It would be great to have met bands like that.

The Kooks On Noel Gallagher's Songwriting Skills

If there's anything New York loves more than a buzz band, it's forgetting about a buzz band. It's hard to stay new for long in this town, and when a band is finally confronted with the reality that the fervor that greeted its naissance has dwindled, it can be awfully painful to watch. After seeing the Brighton-based Kooks play a decent-but-not-great set at Bowery Ballroom last fall, I wondered if their window had already begun to close. Hadn't the Fratellis stolen the Kooks' career right out from under them?
They're planning to start recording in August with producer Tony Hoffer. Given the brand of music the Kooks play, though, and given where they're from -- let's be honest, producing strong second albums hasn't exactly been a trademark of U.K. bands in recent years -- the possibility of a sophomore slump looms. "I think [it happens] just because things change," Pritchard says of poor follow-ups. "Like Noel Gallagher: He wrote all the songs before he became big. I mean, he still writes great tunes, but it's obviously going from being in Manchester to being a millionaire. I think it's all to do with the writing. You can't really write about having a shit time when you're living in a mansion.

Xfm To Air Documentaries

Xfm is planning to celebrate 10 years of broadcasting in the capital by producing a series of documentaries highlighting 10 of the most influential and significant albums released from each of the last 10 years. The hour long shows will air each Sunday at 5pm starting this week.
The documentaries are compiled from new interviews from artists including Dave Grohl, Kaiser Chiefs, Noel Gallagher, Mike Skinner, Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Josh Homme, The Beastie Boys' Mike D, Norman Cook, The White Stripes and Richard Hawley, plus producers Steven Street, Jim Abbiss and John Leckie and music industry figures such as Emily Eavis and Domino Records’ Lawrence Bell.
All ten documentaries were recorded, produced, edited and hosted entirely by Xfm’s Music News Producer Matt Everitt – the man responsible for Xfm’s acclaimed 2006 Primal Scream documentary ‘Screamadelica – Higher Than The Sun’.
Matt said, “In its 10 year history Xfm has championed and supported some of the world finest bands, and its great to go back and revisit not only ten of the albums that have shaped popular music, but also the incredible musicians who created them.
“What have I learnt? Mike Skinner and Alex Kapranos are smarter than you could imagine, while Ricky Wilson and Norman Cook are funnier, Muse’s Matt Bellamy is utterly unhinged (in a very polite way) yet Fran Healy is very polite (in an utterly unhinged way) and Dave Grohl may be the nicest man in rock music, but Josh Homme is definitely the coolest.”
Speaking about the project, title artist Norman Cook said, “It’s marvellous to be included in Xfm’s list of the most influential albums of the past decade, and I must confess, I quite enjoyed being probed at such great length about ‘You’ve Come Along Way Baby’, especially by someone with such well defined probing facilities as Matt.”
The Kaiser Chiefs Ricky Wilson said "Xfm has always been important to us as a band, even before we were this band. Xfm were brave enough to play us, even when we weren't very good. I didn't even hear it for the first seven years until I got a digital radio three years ago, it was just something that Nick always said was important. It's nice now that I'm fully digital, 'cos I can start to support Xfm just as they have been supporting us for a very long time. It's also nice to be seen as being influential, even though Xfm have probably been more influential than us."
Xfm’s Head Of Music Mike Walsh added, ‘Xfm is proud to have been so integral to the careers of so many historic artists over the past 10 years. This series of docs charts the making of many of these historic records by featuring one of our favorite albums of each of our 10 years.
“Xfm has also always prided itself on innovative, in depth and passionate programming. These docs have been brilliantly made, single handedly, by our very own Matt Everitt and are a great to testament to how Xfm continues to compete with the BBC in the area of music specials. We are very grateful to all the artists, managers and label personnel that gave us their time and I'm sure they will all be more than happy with the fantastic job that Matt has done.’
The full list of programmes are:

9th September 2005 – Kaiser Chiefs ‘Employment’

On This Day In Oasis History...

Definitely Maybe is the debut album by English band Oasis, released on August 30th 1994. It was an immediate commercial and critical success in the UK, having followed on the heels of singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker" and particularly the popular "Live Forever".
Definitely Maybe went straight to number one and 7x platinum in the UK Album charts on initial release. It was the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK when released. Definitely Maybe marked the beginning of Oasis' success in America, selling over 1 million copies there, although only reaching #58 on the Billboard 200. The album went on to sell over 7.5 million copies worldwide.
In 1997 Definitely Maybe was named the 14th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 2005 Channel 4's '100 Greatest Albums' countdown placed the album at number 6. In 2006 NME placed the album third in a list of the greatest British albums ever, behind The Stone Roses and The Queen Is Dead. In a recent British poll, run by NME and the book of British Hit Singles and Albums, Definitely Maybe was voted the best album of all time with The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band finishing second and Revolver third. Q magazine readers placed it at five on their greatest albums of all time list in 2006 and in that same year NME hailed it as the greatest album of all time. It is frequently referred to as the greatest debut album of all time.
Album History
In 1994, Oasis were seen as a distant echo of the moribund 'Madchester' scene which had exploded in the early 1990s. Unlike other Madchester bands who indulged in experiments with funk, dance or hip-hop, Oasis presented themselves as a relatively straightforward rock and roll band. Along with bands like Blur and The Verve they seemed to encapsulate a new wave, one which did not yet have a name. By the end of the year the media coined the term Britpop, of which Definitely Maybe retrospectively became one of the pivotal albums.
Many of the songs had originally appeared on Oasis' "Live Demonstration" demo recorded in Liverpool the year before with Chris and Tony Griffiths of The Real People. The main recording sessions took longer than expected, with the bulk of the album having to be recorded three different times with Mark Coyle producing, before Owen Morris came up with a mix that everyone was satisfied with. The album cost nearly £85,000 to produce, a huge amount of money for a debut album at the time.
The album title, according to Noel Gallagher, comes from a poster he saw in a pub, although he cannot remember what the poster was advertising.
