Gallaghers For Letterkenny - 'Definitely, Maybe'

Anticipation was building this week that two famous musical Gallaghers from Manchester might turn up in Letterkenny to join the world record clan gathering attempt on Sunday.

Organisers of the bid to be entered in the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest clan gathering were tight lipped about the possibility of Oasis stars Noel and Liam Gallagher coming to Letterkenny.

They are among the 10,000 Gallaghers from across the world who were contacted in advance of Sunday's record attempt at LYIT.

The only clue to the possible attendance of the musical duo was when Liam Gallagher told a reporter that he would have to cut short his summer holiday to go to a family gathering in Ireland!

The existing holders of a last name gathering in the Guinness Book of Records is the Jones clan from Wales. They managed to gather 1,224 Joneses together to take the record.

Speaking this week Secretary Adrian Gallagher was encouraging all Gallaghers to come to LYIT on Sunday between 1.30 and 5pm.

Niall Gibbons, Director of Corporate Services & Policy with Tourism Ireland said the Gallagher Clan Gathering presented a great opportunity to promote this part of the island of Ireland to prospective visitors in British market.

"It's a fantastic idea and we wish the family the best of luck in their attempt to break the world record," he added.

Chill Out With Caine

With two Oscars and more than 100 movies under his belt, Sir Michael Caine can surely lay claim to the title of Britain’s greatest film star. Since his big break in 1964’s Zulu, he’s appeared in a string of classic movies, including Alfie, The Italian Job, Get Carter and Batman Begins.

But now the 74-year-old star is trying something very different indeed by releasing Cained, a compilation CD of his favourite chill-out tracks. Here, Sir Michael speaks exclusively to The Ticket about his passion for music.

Is it just chill-out music you listen to these days?
I buy it the whole time, but I’ll also buy pop music – silly things like Usher, Beyoncé and David Gray. Weird stuff. I like Oasis, I think they’re great. They owe a little bit to The Beatles, I feel. I like Razorlight and Robbie Williams. I know him, too. He lives upstairs from me in Chelsea Harbour.

Aside from Elton John, you’ve been friends with a lot of musicians.
Yes. I always remember my first meeting with John Lennon. We met up in Cannes when we were getting through this day of press conferences, me for The Ipcress File while I think he was probably doing A Hard Day’s Night. We introduced ourselves to people as John Lemon and Maurice Micklewhite, which is my real name. We got very p****d and behaved very, very badly.

So no plans to retire just yet?
My theory is that you don’t retire, the movie business retires you. Suddenly there’s no money and crap scripts. At some point it will happen to me. But, of course, I now have my music career to fall back on! [Laughs].

On This Day In Oasis History...

Definitely Maybe was released on DVD on September 6th 2004 to mark the tenth anniversary of its original release. It went triple platinum in the UK. The DVD featured an hour-long documentary about the recording of the album featuring rare and contemporary interviews with the band and its associates. Also included was the album in its entirety, which included "Sad Song", which was originally only released on the UK vinyl version of the album and also on the Japanese CD edition. Other content included live and TV performances of the albums twelve tracks, and the promo videos to "Supersonic" (UK & US versions), "Shakermaker", "Live Forever" (UK & US versions), "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star".

A limited-edition release in the UK and Ireland included a bonus DVD containing more live footage and anecdotes.

There was also an accompanying made-for-TV documentary, entitled There We Were, Now Here We Are...: The Making Of Oasis. This was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK at 11:30pm on Friday, September 3, three days before the release of the Definitely Maybe DVD. The programme combined existing and unused interview footage from the DVD documentary and focused on the origins of the band, and the four singles from Definitely Maybe. It also included a very rare clip of "All Around the World" performed live at a rehearsal session in the Boardwalk in 1992, five years before it was eventually recorded and released on Be Here Now.

The DVD received the NME award for Best DVD, beating Nirvana’s With the Lights Out, Pixies’ Pixies, Scissor Sisters’ We Are Scissor Sisters and So Are You and The White Stripes’ Under Blackpool Lights.

Extra Content

Hidden Story Segments

Accessed by playing album's audio on disc one and pressing 'Down' on the following tracks:

"Rock 'n' Roll Star": a story about Liam wanting all sorts of strange instruments on the recording.

"Live Forever": about the choice of Live Forever as the vital 3rd track on the album. Includes a surprise revelation about who sung the vocals on a certain part of the song...

"Supersonic": a segment called Musical Theory — an anecdote by Noel.

"Cigarettes & Alcohol": about Noel's neighbour, who was sick of hearing the song.

"Slide Away": a segment called Definitely Maybe?? — revealing the inspiration behind the title.

"Married with Children": a short piece about Guigsy.

Directors' Commentaries

Heard by pressing 'Audio' on the US versions of "Supersonic" and "Live Forever" and the regular UK versions of "Shakermaker" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" promo videos. (Some of the commentaries don't start until about a minute into the song.)

Alternative Promo Videos
By default, the DVD plays the US versions of "Supersonic" and "Live Forever". To see the UK versions, press 'Angle' once the videos start.

Other Stuff

Wibbling Rivalry: when "Married with Children" ends, the screen will go black for a few seconds. At this time, (and before "Sad Song" starts), press 'down' on your remote, and you'll hear extracts from the infamous Wibbling Rivalry interview.

"Sad Song": the version of the song on the DVD is slightly different to the original version released in 1994. When Noel sings, "Throwing it all away / don't throw it all away", the vocal is double-tracked. No-one outside of the Oasis camp knows why this was done for the DVD release, but if you want to have the original version, you'll have to get the UK vinyl or the Japanese CD edition of Definitely Maybe, or the Japanese CD edition of the "Don't Go Away" single.

Record Breaker UK Label Closes

The new owner of Sanctuary Music Group is closing its UK recorded music division, leaving acts such as The Charlatans, Kelly Osbourne and Dolores O'Riordan, formerly of the Cranberries, without a label.

The move follows last month's £44.5m acquisition of the struggling company by Universal Music.

Sanctuary manages acts including Elton John and James Blunt while it owns the merchandising rights to acts including The Who and Oasis.

It also looks after concerts for over 350 artists including Amy Winehouse and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Morrissey is understood to have left the label earlier this year and is rumoured to be planning to sign with Warner Bros.

Sanctuary was founded in the 1970s with Iron Maiden as its first major signing.

Universal said yesterday: "Sanctuary Records UK division will no longer continue as a stand-alone, frontline record label.

Consultations with employees have begun to minimise redundancies as a result of the restructuring."

Stars Come Out For Radio 1 Birthday

Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher and Tony Blackburn will present a series of programmes on Radio 1 as part of the station's 40th birthday celebrations.

The former Beatle will host the first of 10 evening shows titled Radio 1 Legends, beginning on September 17, playing some of the tunes that inspired him and his career.

He will be followed in the slot by acts including the Arctic Monkeys, Ozzy Osbourne, Debbie Harry, Norman Cook, Gwen Stefani and Oasis guitarist and songwriter Gallagher.

Blackburn, who hosted Radio 1's first ever breakfast show, will return to the station on September 30, exactly 40 years after its first broadcast, to co-host the breakfast slot with Chris Moyles.

This kicks off a day of programmes featuring ex-Radio 1 DJs, including another former breakfast DJ, Zoe Ball, who joins Sara Cox between 1pm and 4pm, and the chart show at 4pm, to be co-presented by JK and Joel with former hosts Mark Goodier and Bruno Brooks.

Hollywood actor and John Peel fan Elijah Wood will host a tribute to the late Radio 1 DJ at 10pm, called Keeping It Peel; following a one-off edition of Annie Nightingale's request show and an hour-long Radio 1 documentary, The A-Z of Radio.

Other former Radio 1 breakfast hosts will join Vernon Kay for the Sunday morning show from 10am.

Radio 1 shares its 40th anniversary with Radio 2, Radio 3 and Radio 4. Radio 3 was previously the BBC Third programme, renamed on September 30, 1967 with the launch of the other three national stations.

Anniversary programming on the other networks include a show hosted by Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse's Smashie and Nicey on Radio 2; and a spoof This Is Your Life-style documentary fronted by Stephen Fry and Matt Lucas on Radio 4.

Amy Winehouse "Liam Gallagher's A Fan"

Taken from a interview with Amy Winehouse in this week's OK magazine.

Everyone says nice things about you, we hear Liam Gallagher's a fan...

Yeah someone said to me the other day: 'What kind of music do you like because we asked Liam Gallagher and he said he only liked rock and roll?'

I was like: 'That's a lie because he said he liked me and I'm not rock and roll!'.

Got, you Liam!

Oasis Pair Invited To Break Record

Organisers of a world record attempt are hoping rock star brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will join them in Ireland this week as their ancestral clan unites for a colossal get-together.

More than 10,000 emails and letters have been sent around the world inviting Gallaghers to Co Donegal on Saturday for the latest international same-surname gathering.

The Oasis duo have been asked to attend but the man behind the massive family do is remaining tight lipped about the rock stars.

"We've invited a couple of boys from Manchester, and that's all I'm saying," organiser Adrian Gallagher said.

The aim of the Gallagher Global Gathering is to beat the record set by the Welsh last year when 1,224 Joneses turned up to an event in Cardiff.

"It's not a matter of keeping up with the Joneses, it's a question of beating them," Mr Gallagher said.

Chairman of the gathering, Donegal priest Father Sean O'Gallachoir, joked when told of the current record: "I could get that in the parish."

Over the last two and a half years, emails have been sent to Irish groups in Canada, Australia and the US, more than 8,500 letters have been sent to the UK and 2,000 around Ireland.

The Gallagher quest also reached international airwaves including an interview on Japanese radio while American broadcasters ABC are planning to film the event.

"The Japanese like the idea of family and culture because some people over there think they are beginning to loose the connected part of their culture," Mr Gallagher said. Gallagher, originally a name associated with the north-west of Ireland, has spread around the world and the clan can trace its roots back to the legendary Irish king Niall Of The Nine Hostages.

Bon Jovi Attacks Oasis, Robbie Williams And Beckham

Singer Jon Bon Jovi has launched a scathing attack at British rockers Oasis and pop star Robbie Williams - insisting their music is so bad they "couldn't fill a bar".

The Livin' On A Prayer hitmaker also hits out at troubled Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty and pokes fun at soccer ace David Beckham in the new issue of Glamour magazine.

He says of Williams, "That guy? He couldn't fill a bar. He couldn't even sell 500 tickets. "(Oasis) couldn't fill a bar, either - and they're full of themselves.

He adds of Doherty, "We're not familiar of anything other than his antics and the fact that he's always in trouble - I've never heard a single one of his songs."

But Bon Jovi's most bitter comments were reserved for LA Galaxy's Beckham, who he ridiculed by asking, "Is he past his prime?"

Is Noel Gallagher To Rich To Write?

To be creative, you must be unhappy; to be unhappy, you must be poor. Therefore, you must be short on cash to be a good musician because a band that lacks creativity will end up…with no money? English rockers The Kooks seem aptly named, because their frontman Luke Pritchard certainly comes across as a little off-side. According to Pritchard, Oasis star Noel Gallagher can no longer write successful songs because he has far too much money to be creative. It is for this reason that he wants The Kooks to record as much music as they can before they become famous and are stripped of all artistic abilities. Pritchard recently told Music-News.com, "He wrote all the songs before he got big. You can't write about having a shit time when you're living in a mansion."

First of all, I’m not sure Noel Gallagher has or ever will be happy, so right away it’s an odd claim. Then there’s the obvious fact that all the money in the world does not guarantee happiness, as evidenced by all of the problems within celebrity culture. And finally, since when has it been a rule that chart topping hits be singularly about “having a shit time?” Of course there are a lot of powerfully emotional songs that unfortunately deal with dark issues, but surely musicians don’t depend on tragedy for success. Or do they? I for one am not ready to accept that, so I’m looking for Oasis to prove Pritchard wrong with their next album, slated for release sometime in 2008.

Jonny Wilkinson "I'm One Of Oasis's Biggest Fans"

As a rugby player, he's the perfectionist who can't stop practising. But as a pianist, he's happy simply to fool around with his brother in their home studio. The World Cup-winner can play all right, just don't ask him to sing ...

How did you come to take up music?

I asked my older brother, Mark, to buy me a guitar for my birthday in 2003. It was around six months before the World Cup and I started playing because the pressure was building and I needed a release. When I began practising, I was convinced my fingers would never master it, that I hadn't got an ear for music, I hadn't got any rhythm. But it's a skill that can be learnt. I don't have a musical ear - which is why I don't sing - but I now have an understanding of how music works. That helped me to move on to the piano; I started reading about how to form chords and scales and now I can pick out a tune.

What music do you like listening to?

My tastes are quite mainstream. I like Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight, and a bit of old-school rap. I enjoy the music I used to listen to on my parents' old records: Dire Straits, the Beatles, all that. And I'm one of Oasis's biggest fans. They're never going to lose it - they're timeless. I haven't been to many concerts or gigs, but I went to see them in Newcastle once.

Kooks Star: 'Noel Gallahger Is Too Rich To Write'

Oasis star Noel Gallagher is too rich to write chart-topping songs, according to The Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard.

Pritchard wants to compose as much material as he can, before his band become too successful - because he believes wealth sapped Gallagher's creativity.

He says, "He wrote all the songs before he got big. You can't write about having a s**t time when you're living in a mansion."
