Noel Gallagher's Favourite Programme Is Back

Meerkat Manor has returned for a new series

Noel Gallagher's favourite programme is back on TV.

The rock star, 40, has fallen in love with Meerkat Manor - a documentary about the Whiskers, a family of meerkats who live in the Kalahari Desert.

Noel, who used to love to party hard, is captivated by the little creatures and likes nothing more than cuddling up with his 7-year-old daughter to see the show.

'Mostly I sit at home with my daughter Anais and watch Meerkat Manor,' he admits.

The new third season promises new characters, lots of romance and more cliffhangers, only not everything goes well for dominant female Flower and her family.

The Zappa tribe are the neighbours from hell. But poor baby Axel...oh, no...

Happy Birthday Zak Starkey...

Zak Starkey was born on September 13, 1965.

Career

Early years (1977-1985)

Starkey received his first starter drum kit from his father, although it is mistakenly reported that it was given to him by his idol, The Who's Keith Moon. Moon did, however, give Zak his first professional kit – one Moon previously used with The Who - and also some drumming lessons.

At the age of eight, Starkey became interested in music. At ten, he started teaching himself how to play drums after receiving only one lesson from his famous father, who reportedly did not want him following in his footsteps. Although Ringo praises his son's undeniable skills and talent, he said that he "always regarded Zak as a lawyer or as a doctor", not a drummer like himself.

By the age of 12, Starkey was already performing in pubs with a band. In his teens, Starkey was a member of a garage act, the Next. He eventually landed work with a re-formed Spencer Davis Group. In 1985, shortly after getting married, Starkey released a musical version of Wind in the Willows with Eddie Hardin.

The Who (1994-present)

Although Zak had previously worked with John Entwistle in Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band tours, he received his first opportunity to work with The Who in 1994, with Roger Daltrey in his "Daltrey Sings Townshend" tour. This tour developed from a two night performance at Carnegie Hall to celebrate Daltrey's fiftieth birthday, when he afterward recruited John Entwistle, Simon Townshend and Zak Starkey to complete a U.S. tour.

In 1996, Starkey left his band Face, to work with The Who on their Quadrophenia tour. He received very good reviews in this role for being a strong drumming presence but without explicitly imitating Moon. Zak was the full-time drummer for The Who beginning with their 1996 Quadrophenia Tour. Both Townshend and Daltrey stated that he is the best drummer The Who had since the death of original drummer Keith Moon. He provided drumming for one track on The Who's 2006 album Endless Wire, and for two new tracks released in 2004 on The Who: Then and Now. However, he was unable to provide the drumming for the EP Wire & Glass or the album Endless Wire because he was on tour with Oasis at the time Townshend recorded the songs. Starkey worked with The Who on The Who Tour 2006-2007, which was to finish in Glastonbury in 2007. It finished at Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland on 9th July. Afterward he is expected to work more with Oasis.

According to Pete Townshend's official web site, Zak was invited to become a full member of The Who, but he declined:

“ some of you may have noticed in one of my recent diary postings that I welcomed Zak into the Who as a permanent member. This is something he doesn't feel he needs or wants. Let's just say that the door is always open to this amazing musician, and - whenever we can - we will always try to make it possible for Zak to work with the Who in the future.”

Oasis (2004-present)

In 2004, Starkey spent a period of time working with the Britpop band Oasis, filling a void left by longtime drummer Alan White's departure. In May 2005, Noel Gallagher revealed to the BBC that Starkey had recorded in the recording sessions (March-December 2004) for their new album, Don't Believe the Truth. Zak recorded all but one track of the sessions. In an official promotional video for the album, Zak commented on the band and the sessions, saying, "It was amazing. They're all singers, They're all guitar players, they're all songwriters, they're all producers... and they're all fucking drummers."

Starkey participated in every show on Oasis' 2005/2006 world tour and also appeared in the promo videos for the singles. However, as he was not an official member of the band, he very rarely appeared with the rest of the band in promotional activities such as interviews and photo shoots.

After the end of tours in April, Noel Gallagher confirmed that Starkey was invited to be Oasis' official drummer, but that couldn't materialize before his current working engagements with The Who are completed in mid-2007. Noel said that he felt Starkey had strong emotional ties with The Who and he wouldn't leave them completely, also adding that he was content to have Starkey alternate his career between the two bands.

In February 14, Starkey sat behind the drums, when the band received the BRIT Award for Outstanding contribution to music. The band played a set consisting of "Cigarettes & Alcohol", "The Meaning of Soul", "Morning Glory", "Don't Look Back in Anger" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star".

Zak is expected to drum on the band forthcoming seventh album to be released sometime in 2008. He is also expected to join the band full-time.

Other work (1985-present)

In 1985, both he and his father Ringo Starr performed as drummers on the recording Sun City by Artists United Against Apartheid.

In 1988, Starkey replaced Chris Sharrock as the drummer in The Icicle Works. He left the band in 1989, and did not appear on any Icicle Works recordings, although a B-side later issued by Icicle Works leader Ian McNabb featured Starkey on drums, and is presumed to actually date from Starkey's tenure with the group.

Zak played on Silver and Gold a solo album released by Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith in 1989.

In addition to his work with The Who and Oasis, Starkey continued to work with other acts, including touring with The Lightning Seeds. In 2000 Starkey was a founding member of Johnny Marr & The Healers, debuting with Boomslang three years later. In 2007, Zak was drummer on the Paul Weller single "This Old Town" along with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon.

Last.fm is a UK-based internet radio and music community website, founded in 2002. It is the world's largest social music platform with over 20 million active users based in more than 232 countries.

Using a unique music recommendation system known as "Audioscrobbler", Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations or on the user's own computer or iPod. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database ("Scrobbled") via a plugin installed into the users' music player. The profile data is displayed on a personal web page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favourites.

Users can create custom radio stations and playlists from any of the audio tracks in Last.fm's music library, but are not able to listen to individual tracks on demand, or to download tracks unless the rightsholder has previously authorised it.

Oasis Fan Has Song Dedicated To Him By The Enemy

The Enemy played a storming show in Apple’s flagship store in London last night (September 11th).

Ripping through a nine song set, which was being recorded for Apple's iTunes music store, the band looked confident and assured throughout the performance.

Surrounded by iPods and iMacs, the band kicked off with their limited edition debut single, ’40 Days And 40 Nights,’ where frontman Tom Clarke implored the crowd at the front to get involved.

“Lets stand up, lets f**king have some,” he told the crowd of VIP competition winners.

Clarke then dedicated the next song, ‘Away From Here,’ to a member of the crowd “in the 94 Oasis t-shirt.”

In a relentless set, The Enemy treated the crowd to all the most energetic songs from their number one debut album, ‘We’ll Live And Die In These Towns,’ including, ‘Technodanceaphobic,’ ‘Had Enough’ and ‘It’s Not OK.’

As the band left the stage, the frontman cooly reminded the crowd to “pick up a fucking iPod” on the way out of the venue.

The Greatest Q Awards Moments Ever

Nine Weeks into this endeavour, it occurs to me that we haven’t as yet attempted to distil awards ceremonies into a list. Given that this is Q, such an oversight is clearly remiss, and one that shall be corrected forthwith. Hence, presented here for your delectation, is the 10 Greatest Awards Moments… That I Have Seen.

10 Liam Gallagher’s reliable heckling of Coldplay’s Chris Martin during the latter’s acceptance speech. If only because, having begun with a predictable barrage of insults, the simian singer appeared to have exhausted his supply of expletives and, so stumped, simply shouted, “Plant pot!” at the bemused Martin.

The full list can be found here.

Noel Gallagher Attacks Hip Hop

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has launched an attack on Eminem and 50 Cent, calling them bad role models.

"I despise hip hop. Loathe it," says Noel. "Eminem is an idiot and I find 50 Cent the most distasteful character I have ever crossed in my life. It's so negative.

"That's how you end up with these gangs of youths stabbing people. Kids are so thick these days. They're easily influenced."

The Pigeon Detectives Reveal Truth About 'Silly Name'

But Leeds band say Oasis have 'girl's name'.

The Pigeon Detectives have revealed the story behind their oft-criticised name.

The band let slip their secret as they prepare to play a mammoth UK tour, which starts on October 15 in Aberdeen.

Speaking about the name drummer Jimmi Naylor said: "I never liked the name at first. But it's stuck - and it's probably got us more attention having a silly name.

"It came from an Australian guy who we met at the Leeds Festival. We were just discussing band names and he came up with The Pigeon Detectives. It became an in-joke for the rest of the festival.

"We thought nothing of it, but when it came to our first gig in Leeds the promoter was saying, 'What's your name?' we were like 'Oh, um The Pigeon Detectives.'"

Speaking to Musician's Union magazine 'Musician', Naylor added: "We meant to change it but it's kind of got too far. I suppose there are a lot of bands with bad names, though. I mean, even Oasis sounds like a girl pop band."

Shack - 'Time Machine' (Sour Mash) Released 10/09/07

by Hannah John

There’s nowt so tragic as an underachiever. We’ve all met that kid at school that, come exam results day, teachers shake their heads at sadly, sighing “Ah, but he showed so much promise…”. Scouse outfit Shack are undoubtedly the musical equivalent of this unfortunate kiddie, as this ‘Best of’ album chock full of could’ve beens and should’ve beens demonstrates.

Brothers Mick and John Head formed the basis of Shack’s ever-changing line-up having previously spent time in cult ‘80s folk rockers The Pale Fountains and in the backing band for Arthur Lee’s Love. As Shack, though, they’ve released five albums which all garnered critical praise and a plethora of today’s leading lights cite them as huge influences – Shack’s gentle harmonies, wistful arrangements and touching lyrics were all clearly absorbed by the likes of The Coral, The Thrills, Elbow and The Zutons. Hell, they’re even on Noel Gallagher’s Sour Mash Records label, so why in the name of frick haven’t they acquire the same sort of status as contemporaries The Stone Roses or Oasis?

It’s certainly a toughie, especially given that this album kicks off with all that’s great about Shack. ’I Know You Well’ features Beta Band-esque production over an ever-present bass riff, while ‘Comedy’ combines lush harmonies with piquant chord progressions that build up to a triumphant string-soaked guitar solo finale. ‘Cup of Tea’ has the endearingly quirky lyrics that singer Mick Head made his trademark (“My cup of tea doesn’t taste the same when she’s with me”) while ‘Pull Together’ has Ian Brown-like verse vocals that give way to a howling, affecting chorus.

So with all these riches to be found, why are Shack punching so far below their weight? As with much of Shack’s output, at times it sounds like they’ve been overplaying their Beatles records like good musical Scousers. ‘Meant to Be’ and its Beatles-esque melody is nothing compared to the outrageous thieving of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ in ‘On the Terrace’. There’s also a noticeable drop in momentum towards the end of the record, one track tends to blur into another in a happy summery haze. Nevertheless new tracks ‘Holiday Abroad’ and ‘Wanda’ suggest that the Shack tank is still full of enthusiasm and a knack for a catchy tune. With a tour to support the release also in the offing, we can but hope that the wilderness years might be coming to an end for Shack, so shout it from the rooftops, give it some onions and generally get this record heard.

Brakes On Oasis

Brighton rock band Brakes talk about Oasis in a recent interview

Where does this mass ego-trip come from exactly?

"I think Oasis have a lot to answer for with that," ventures Hamilton. "I mean, it's brilliant with Oasis. They're two of the funniest dudes you could ever hope to meet, but they're just one band and I don’t think everyone should copy that whole 'we're the fucking best' thing. There’s a beauty in modesty. Let people make their own minds up about your music. Having said that, Brakes are the most amazing band…"

New Album From Radiohead Has Finished Recording

Thom Yorke and the boys from Radiohead have finished work on their new album according to Paste.com.

We just had a meeting about that today," Jonny Greenwood told Paste.com "We're very relieved to have finished recording, now we have to decide what we should do with it."

The big question around the band still lingers. How will they release the album? The band is still unsigned to a label. They share that same distinction with fellow English rockers Oasis who are in the recording studio.

It looks like bands without contracts now may go it alone without a label. The technology to release an album is available via the Internet and it will be interesting to see if that is how the new albums are marketed.

Carlos Tevez To Cover Oasis?

Manchester United star Carlos Tevez plans to release an album of his team-mates’ favourite tracks.

The Argie striker is a keen singer and fronts a group called Piola Vigo, which he set up with pals from a tough area of his home city Buenos Aires.

Listen Now
Dejala Tevez
Mi Corazon
No Quieras Condenarme
Te Voy A Ganar

The group’s name translates in local dialect as Sly Idle and they play a shanty-town version of Colombian folk music — although it sounds to me like the stuff they play in Spanish nightclubs in Shagaluf.

A source said: “Carlos hopes to cover his United pals’ favourite songs in the Piola Vago style.”
I’m not sure how Red Devils captain Gary Neville's heroes Oasis will translate?
