Liam Gallagher To Work With Peter Hook

Former New Order bassist Peter Hook has told Gigwise that he plans to work with Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown in the near future.

Since he called time on New Order, Hook has been working alongside Primal Scream bass player Mani and former Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke on a new project under the name, Freebass.

Hook told Gigwise this week that The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess has just turned in the first vocal for the outfit and that the momentum behind the band is building quickly.

Describing Burgess’ contribution as “fucking great,” he went on to reveals the impressive list of other artists who are scheduled to contribute guest vocals for the band.

“We’ve got other people working on it,” Hook revealed. “Ian Brown is doing one for us, Howard Marks is doing one for us, Pete Wiley, Ian McCulloch, Liam Gallagher.”

Explaining the trio’s motivation for forming Freebass, Hook explained: “We’ve just called friends in really which has been nice.

“I think it’s always good to give something back and we’ve helped them in the past all of us, me and Mani have helped a lot of people and so has Andy Rourke, so it’s been nice to do it.”

As we revealed exclusively on Monday (October 8th), Hook has ended all speculation that New Order would record new music, saying there was “no future” for the band.

If god had wanted Oasis to be art, he wouldn't have invented Liam.

There are some things you expect from a film of Oasis on tour. Scowling from Liam Gallagher, dry wit from Noel, much sibling rivalry, more swearing and the occasional suggestion that there are other members of the band. Lord Don't Slow Me Down, filmed during the course of their triumphal, year-long Don't Believe The Truth tour, ticks all of these boxes.It just doesn't do so enougth.

Director Baillie Walsh - previous employers Massive Attack, New Order and Kylie - elects to film Oasis in grainy black and White, the odd burst of over-exposed colour aside, his cameras relentlessly seeking out the most oblique angle or unexpected vantage point. Sometimes this approach works a treat: Oasis have perhaps never looked more imposing, more dramatic onstage; a sly shot through a crack in Gallagher Jr's dressing-room door delightfully captures the singer on his own, gibbon dancing around, entirely oblivious to the watching camera.

More often, it's all ill-fitting juxtaposition to have Oasis on-the-road life, which seems to amount to a 12-month stag night, shot as if for the arthouse. Which is not to say Walsh appears touched by cinematic genius - the overriding impression felt by Lord Don't Slow Me Down is of someone messing about with the medium, while never really grasping what it can do.

He's either not understood or undervalued the all-important humour inherent within the Gallagher's. Hence, the brothers tend to drift in and out of focus on their own film.

When they're there, top-notch entertainment is never far away. Liam's encounter with Girls Aloud at a Q photoshoot is priceless. And Noel, looking ever more like long-suffering chauffeur Parker from Thunderbirds, has all the best lines. Reflecting upon when they'll stop touring, he concludes, "One day, Liam will go bald, and that will be it."

The extras help to right this wrong. The band's commentary serves up a handfull of belly laughs - Liam berating a New York cabbie for failing to run over Noel;

Noel during a the course of otherwise diplomatically negotiating a backstage appearance by Charlotte Church, announcing as one of the more agricultural members of her entourage hoves into view, "Now look at this f**king vegetable."

There is, too, a bonus disc featuring 90 minutes of footage of the band's gig at the City Of Manchester Stadium, which emphasises that none do the big communal singalong thing better, despite the fact it seems to have been recorded through a duvet.

Good then. But not that good.

On October 11 2004 Oasis fan site stopcryingyourheartout.com was born in the small Welsh town of Caerphilly. The site was in the UK's biggest selling Internet magazine in early 2005 and has featured in The Sun Newspaper, Daily Mirror, The Daily Mail and The South Wales Echo.

The site has been mentioned on several Radio Stations including BBC Radio One and BBC Radio 6 and Virgin Radio to name a few.

Earlier this month the site won the prestigious People's Choice Award for Best Unofficial Site, at the BT Music Awards.

Liam Gallagher To Marry Nicole Appleton Later This Month

Oasis star Liam Gallagher will marry Nicole Appleton in London later this month (26Oct07) after a seven-year romance.

The rocker - who has a six-year-old son, Gene, with the former All Saints star - says he's long-planned to wed but wanted to concentrate on raising his child.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Liam and Nicole are registered for a service in Marylebone." It will be the first marriage for Appleton. Gallagher divorced actress Patsy Kensit in 2000.

Excess All Areas? Not If You're Oasis

Their new documentary Lord Don't Slow Me Down suggests that life on the road isn't all sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Are they just getting old, or is touring really boring?

On the road with Oasis: an endless bacchanal where the non-stop boozing, drugging and other bad behaviour only halts when Man City are on Sky Sports, right?

Not according to the band's new tour documentary Lord Don't Slow Me Down. Filmed during the world tour of 2005-6, Lord... serves as final proof that even Britpop's hedonistic elite now prefer an early night to dusk-til-dawn sessions discussing aliens with Kasabian.

"The years of kissing the sky and drinking champagne out of cowboy boots at 10 o'clock in the morning are all gone" admits Noel, with a hint of regret. As if to prove it, the Oasis dressing room is at it's most frenzied during - of all things - a fiercely contested bout of 70s board game Frustration.

The sad truth, of course, is that after a while touring in a rock'n'roll band becomes as crushingly monotonous as any other job. Artfully contrived videos might give the impression that backstage areas are a crazed combination of the Hellfire Club and Turner's pad in Performance , but sadly the reality is far more mundane.

Take a peak behind the curtain and you'll often get a lot less than you bargained for. I once rushed backstage to congratulate Radiohead on their first ever performance of the Bends , only to find them in total silence, huddled around a kettle.

Visit any of the latest indie icons after a rapturously received gig, and chances are you'll be faced with a bunch of exhausted musicians sipping warm lager under strip lights whilst, if you're lucky, a roadie knocks up a joint on a discarded copy of Nuts.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Cigarettes & Alcohol" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher, it was released on October 10, 1994. It was the fourth single to be released from their debut album Definitely Maybe, and their second to enter the Top Ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at #7 (three places higher than "Live Forever").

Whereas earlier singles "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker" had used psychedelic imagery, and "Live Forever" used softer chords and tender lyrics, "Cigarettes & Alcohol" was the first real taste, among their singles, of the wilder attitude that Oasis appeared to be promoting. The song showcases the appeal of cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and partying as a remedy to the banality of working class life. Lyrics such as "Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for" tapped into the mood of British working class youth in the mid-1990s. However, the song does not set out to hold up these minor releases of work-a-day life as some ideal. They are, rather, a compromise – "You could wait for a lifetime," they sing, "to spend your days in the sunshine/(so) you might as well do the white line".

Another notable element of this song is Liam's unique pronunciation of many of the words. Most rhymes end in "-tion," and Liam draws these out into "-sheeyion," for almost every line. Noel has said that he writes many lyrics to fit Liam's extremely different vocal style. This is debatably one of the most memorable parts of this song.

The song was one of the first cases when Oasis was accused of musical plagiarism, a reputation of the band that would later grow. The main riff of the song is supposedly "borrowed" from "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" by T-Rex and also bears a similarity to the opening of Humble Pie's cover of "C'Mon Everybody" from the album Smokin'.

Rod Stewart covered the song on his 1998 album When We Were the New Boys.

To add to the similarity between "Get It On" and this particular track, at the end, Liam Gallagher sings the Bolanesque double entendre refrain you gotta, you gotta, you gotta make it, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta fake it.

There is also a very similar chord progression in the song "Rose Tint My World" from the rock opera The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The intro to this song in particular seems to have provided Noel Gallagher with some influence in writing this song.

The song is included on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Cigarettes & Alcohol" at number 31 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

Contrary to the sleevenotes, which claimed it was recorded at the Glasgow Cathouse in June 1994, "I Am the Walrus" was actually recorded at a soundcheck for a gig at the Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland on February 6, 1994, as part of a Sony Music seminar. The reason why this wasn't mentioned on the original sleevenotes was because Noel thought mentioning the fact that it was recorded at a corporate event would look bad. The crowd noises at the beginning and end of the track are from a Faces bootleg of Noel's.

All three B-sides were featured on The Masterplan, however "I Am the Walrus" and "Listen Up" both appear as edited versions.

The Father Ted episode Cigarettes and Alcohol and Rollerblading is named after this song.

This and Lyla, are the only singles entirely sung by Liam Gallagher.

John Lennon Would Have Been 67 Today

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980), was an English songwriter, singer, musician, graphic artist, author and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founders of The Beatles. Lennon and Paul McCartney formed a critically acclaimed and commercially successful partnership writing songs for The Beatles and other artists. Lennon, with his cynical edge and knack for introspection, and McCartney, with his storytelling optimism and gift for melody, complemented each other. In his solo career, Lennon wrote and recorded songs such as "Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance".

Lennon revealed his rebellious nature and irreverent wit on television, in films such as A Hard Day's Night (1964), in books such as In His Own Write, and in press conferences and interviews. He channelled his fame and penchant for controversy into his work as a peace activist, artist, and author.

He had two sons, Julian, with his first wife Cynthia, and Sean, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono. Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in New York City on 8 December 1980 as he and Ono returned home from a recording session.

In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon into eighth place. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Lennon number 38 on their list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time"and ranked The Beatles at number 1.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody Voted Best Video

It was one of the first promotional videos ever recorded and took just four hours to shoot on the band's rehearsal stage. Now Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody has been voted the UK's best music video of all time in a poll.

Nearly a third of those quizzed in the Q Magazine survey (30 per cent) said the groundbreaking video for the rock opera-style song was their top choice.

The video cost a paltry £4,500 to produce back in 1975 and is widely hailed at the music video that launched the MTV age.

The survey of 1,051 adults found that "the video relating to the song" was the most important factor in what made a good music video, with 56 per cent plumping for it.

Thirty two per cent chose "good choreography", making it the second most important factor, and, perhaps, an indictment to the standards of the school corridor dancing of Spears and her colourful gaggle.

Less than a fortnight ago, it was revealed, on the Radio 1 Chart Show, that the rock-operatic gem was the most played song since Radio 1's launch 40 years earlier.

Oasis Get It On With Girls Aloud

Another new snippet has been made available from the forthcoming DVD release of Oasis' on-the-road movie 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down'.

This week's clip sees the Gallaghers chat up pop group Girls Aloud.

The film, which was released in selected cinemas last year will come with a host of extras - including voice commentaries from all of the band, plus footage of the Q&A Noel Gallagher hosted in New York last year.

A second disc captures Oasis' Manchester homecoming show at Citys' Eastlands Stadium too, which includes footage sent in by fans who attended the show. ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’ is scheduled for release on October 29.

Kelly Jones Praises Noel Gallagher

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has praised Noel Gallagher for helping him realise the importance of songwriting.

Talking exclusively to Gigwise, Jones said that emerging in such a vibrant period for British music was an eye-opening experience for the band.

“Coming up off the back of the Britpop thing and getting to know people like Noel (Gallagher) and stuff you realised that it is all about songwriting and it’s about working your bollocks off but having a good time and making it look like it’s easy but behind the scenes you’ve gotta fucking put the graft in,” said Jones.

He added: “There are too many bands that want it and if you don’t want it as much as they want it then they’ll have it, so it’s up to you really."

Stereophonics will release their sixth studio album, ‘Pull The Pin,’ next week (October 15th).

Sting tops Worst Lyricists Poll - Noel Gallagher No.4

Maybe Sting should start writing more instrumentals.

The school teacher-turned-rock star topped Blender's list of the worst lyricists, thanks to lines that betray "mountainous pomposity (and) cloying spirituality," the music magazine said.

The survey, contained in the November issue that hits newsstands next week, placed Rush drummer Neil Peart at No. 2, Creed frontman Scott Stapp at No. 3, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher at No. 4, and soft-rocker Dan Fogelberg at No. 5.
Blender assailed Sting for such alleged sins as name-dropping Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov in the Police tune "Don't Stand So Close to Me," quoting a Volvo bumper sticker ("If You Love Someone Set Them Free"), and co-opting the works of Chaucer, St. Augustine and Shakespeare.

A spokeswoman for the English rocker, who is currently in Belgium on the Police's reunion world tour, did not respond to a request for comment.

Blender described Canadian rocker Peart's lyrics as "richly awful tapestries of fantasy and science," and said Gallagher "seemed incapable of following a metaphor through a single line, let alone a whole verse."

Further down the ranks, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant (No. 23) was derided for his Tolkienesque musings on Gollum and Mordor in "Ramble On."

Carly Simon (No. 31) was mocked for rhyming "yacht," "apricot" and "gavotte" in "You're So Vain."

Paul McCartney made No. 38, thanks in part to "Ebony and Ivory," his socially conscious duet with Stevie Wonder.
