They Were 'Mad For It' Years Ago

It has been aimed at public figures from former footballer Paul Gascoigne to comedian Johnny Vegas. But the terrace chant "who ate all the pies?" was first sung more than a century ago, new research has found.

The phrase was first coined by Sheffield United fans in 1894 to honour goalkeeper William "Fatty" Foulke.

He weighed an imposing 24st and even made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the heaviest-ever footballer.

But it is not just sports fans who are recycling catchphrases. Researchers have also found that "mad for it" - an expression associated with Manchester and Noel and Liam Gallagher of rock band Oasis - dates from documents published in 1670.

It was used in much the same context as today, to convey excitement, according to Dr Julia Cresswell, author of The Cat's Pyjamas: The Penguin Book of Cliches.

The academic sifted through documents and records at Oxford University, where she teaches, in a bid to find the first recorded use for many phrases.

Graeme Le Saux On Oasis And More

Best player you ever played with?
Gianfranco Zola. In terms of skill and he was just a great role model. He was one of the few players that both home and away fans would cheer at the same time. He brought out a certain chivalry out of football supporters, something you would have seen when my Dad watched the game. And he was great round the training ground too, [sighing with nostalgia] he drove a great big Range Rover and sat perched on a cushion because he couldn't see over the dashboard without it.

Shall we talk about music? Small Talk understands you've been to a few gigs in your time.
Oh yes, Interpol are always brilliant.

Yes, Int...But for atmosphere Oasis at Maine Road was electric, like a homecoming gig. I was at the side of the stage because I know [namedropping shamelessly] Alan McGee and just looking out at the crowd took your breath away.

But, Oasi... Then there was the Stone Roses at Alexandra Palace back in the day. That might be my all-time favourite, musically. I saw Ian Brown a while back and I think I remembered more of it than he did!

The thing about Ia... I haven't been to Glastonbury. I'd love to go.

Don't bother, Graeme, it's full of Guardian types these days with their BlackBerrys' and social consciences and what not. What album does it for you?
Ooh, anything by Radiohead. [Has a little think] The Bends probably, although Kid A is pretty good, Hail to the Thief was too experimental though.

Well, it's a lot better than saying Snow Patrol, which is what 98.64% of sportsmen/sportswomen say...
[Sadly] Yeah, their first album was good but then like a lot of bands that taste success they got more poppy and staid.

Let Ride Have Their Place In Music History

Writing in The Guardian, Alan McGee thinks we should give Ride their due:With the resurgence of shoegaze - or nu-gaze - and Panda Bear, Animal Collective, Deerhunter and No Age all referencing them as an influence in interviews, I feel it's time to look back at one of the all-time underrated Creation bands, Ride.

In '91, Ride had the critical and commercial world at their feet. Their full-length debut Nowhere marked them out as teenage saviours of rock'n'roll. The Nowhere cover pictured an ocean wave, a knowing tribute to the wall of sound they were creating. And what a wall of sound: Andy Bell and Mark Gardener's guitars and harmonies underpinned by Steve Queralt and Loz Colbert's eight-mile-high bass-and-drum dance groove.

Nowhere fused Byrds and Sonic Youth influences with the exuberant spirit of their contemporaries, the Stone Roses and the House of Love. It epitomised the feeling that something was happening in independent music beyond twee C86 and third form baggy. However, by the time they released the follow-up, Going Blank Again (an album that originally had the title of Prog Rock), a year later, they were up against it.

Critics accused them of having nothing to say. Their influence had spread - now they were competing with a hundred shambolic versions of themselves. Despite this, they triumphed with the lead-off single which went to the top ten - the first Creation single to do so.

Leave Them All Behind was no longer the sound of shoegaze but full-blown psychedelic stadium rock. Their second single, Twisteralla, was played non-stop on Radio One. Going Blank Again demonstrated how powerful a group Ride had become. The sound they explored on Nowhere had coalesced into classic songs. The album's success kept Creation Records going during the My Bloody Valentine aftermath. Their sound was a revelation.

Nicky Byrne: 'Liam Gallagher Told Me To F**k Off When I Met Him'

They have sold 40million albums and this week are on course to notch up their seventh No1 album with new release Back Home.

But Westlife heart-throb Nicky Byrne insists it is their boss who is the real star — a certain Simon Cowell.

In an exclusive interview Nicky, 29, told me: “Simon is bigger than Brad Pitt in America. Ever since he started American Idol he’s become a megastar.

With 14 UK No1 singles, the boys are behind only Elvis and The Beatles for chart-topping successes — a record they have every chance of beating.

And they are still going strong after ten years, an incredible achievement in the fickle pop world.
In the past I’ve made no secret of the fact I’m not a fan of the cheesy cover songs they’ve put out.

Last year I launched a campaign to “Stop The Cocks” beating Oasis in the album charts, in reference to Oasis’ greatest hits album Stop The Clocks.

Needless to say Westlife’s army of fans bought The Love Album by the bucketload, beating Oasis hands down and forcing me to concede defeat.

But Nicky reckons, despite the knocking the lads sometimes take, he’d never want to swap lives with Oasis’ wildman Liam Gallagher.

He explained: “I love Oasis, they are proper musicians and songwriters and I’m a fan of their music.

“But I’d never want to be Liam — I could never be as obnoxious as him and I couldn’t lead his lifestyle.

“I met him once. We’d only just started out and we assumed all pop and rock stars would be nice to each other. We were naive.

"We were at the opening of a Tommy Hilfiger store in London and we saw Liam and said, ‘We’re from Westlife, Ronan Keating’s new band’.

“He looked at us, and just went, ‘F*** off’. Nowadays I’d probably give something back but I was just left speechless.”

But the lads could get one over on the likes of Liam by going on for years to come.

Liam Gallagher Party's With Kate Moss And Friends Until 4.30am

The Primrose Hill lot were out in force on Monday night, presumably staying ahead of the pack by trying to make it their new Saturday.

It all started with those high-living stalwarts Kate Moss, 33, and Davina Taylor at the Clifton pub near Abbey Road in north London.

There they were joined by Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, 35, no doubt drawn in by the famous Beatles landmark - but left ahead of him to head back to 29-year-old Davina's gaff.

He followed and when Kate's new fella, Jamie Hinch, 39, arrived with a guitar a party was born.

Oasis - Lord Don't Slow Me Down Single Review

Oasis

Lord Don't Slow Me Down
Single Review

The Gallagher's have seemingly jumped on the band wagon in the shape of a "Download Single" OR the official story that Lord Don't Slow Me Down has been released to promote their DVD. So here is the real truth behind the track (or is it?) Lord Don't Slow Me Down was didn't fit within the last album, so naturally as soon as there was an opportunity to release it in some shape or form this seemed the ideal time.

The new Single to come from Oasis Lord Don't Slow Me Down is a Noel singing track so little brother Liam is just waving his tambourine around just so he feels part of the track. The one thing that does stand out is that it would have fitted in with the last album. Everything about it has that feel to it. This could of even been one of those tracks they would play to give Liam a breather and shine the limelight onto the rest of the band members.

There is always one thing about Oasis and that is once the first chord is played you recognise that it is them straight away. What ever the reasoning behind the latest release (Don't forget though there is a new edition in Noel's household) it is still Oasis showing that they are still around and have no intention of slowing down.
