Happy Birthday Gem Archer

Colin Murray Archer (born December 7, 1966 County Durham), better known as Gem (pronounced with a hard "G" - like "guitar", after the Scottish footballer Archie Gemmill), is an English musician best known for his work with Heavy Stereo and Oasis. He joined Oasis as rhythm guitar player in November 1999, and now writes some of their songs.

Archer is a vegetarian. He is married to Lou, with whom he has a son, Joel, and a daughter, Libby.

Whirlpool

Archer began his musical career in Whirlpool in the mid-80s. Ironically, in 1987, when Whirlpool were auditioning for a drummer, he stumbled across a young Alan White (then just 15 years old) who impressed everyone at the audition. Archer remembers "I thought he was mega but the others were worried what a 15-years-old kid on the road and on the lager would be like. I rang his dad and told him, Sorry. But don't worry he's fantastic. He'll go all the way". Archer's words were to prove true when White joined Oasis in 1995. Archer was to join him 12 years after their initial meeting.

Heavy Stereo

When Whirlpool split in the early 90s, Archer graduated to singer and guitarist status with Creation Records signing Heavy Stereo, a glam-rock band. They enjoyed some success supporting Oasis on some dates of their 1996 UK arena tour. Their only album, 1996's Déjà Voodoo, followed shortly, but did not enjoy much critical or commercial success. However, Heavy Stereo's next release did receive more attention through demos of new material, a critically acclaimed contribution to The Jam tribute album, Fire and Skill - Songs Of The Jam, and opening on a Paul Weller tour. Archer recalls "We'd got a Paul Weller tour and our new music was our best ever... I thought '99 really might be a good year for us." However, work on the record was put on hold when Archer's mother fell seriously ill.

Oasis

Whilst at home in Newcastle, having returned to care for his mother, Archer - lying in front of the fire - heard a report on The Big Breakfast that Bonehead had left Oasis after a massive row with Noel Gallagher. He claims "I thought, Shit! They'll split now. I was a real fan, and I'm not just saying that. For me, Oasis had breathed life back into rock 'n' roll." He was unaware that Noel Gallagher - who knew Archer from both their days on the Creation Records label - had rung his home in London where it was Archer's son Joel's birthday party. Once Archer's mother had recovered, Gallagher invited him to Olympic Studios, where Oasis were mixing Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. "We went to the pub and I couldn't stand not knowing if I was a part of the band. After less than half a pint of Guinness I said, "What does Liam say?" And Noel said," It's my fucking band. I'll have who I want." Archer claims the rest of Heavy Stereo were pleased for him to join Oasis.

As Archer did not perform on the Giants album, he received no royalties and, for the first few performances, was paid a standard session wage, about £85 a gig, as the new Oasis rhythm guitarist. His first official duty was to appear on the "Go Let It Out" video - on which he played lead guitar, as Andy Bell had yet to take over bass, so Noel played bass with Liam on rhythm - and played his first rhythm guitar set at a session for alternative radio in Philadelphia.

Though Archer is officially referred to as Oasis' rhythm guitarist, his role in Oasis is much more than that. In live setting he and Noel often switch between lead and rhythm guitar and both Noel and Liam Gallagher have praised Archer for his contributions in the studio. Archer also has a role as a songwriter. His first songwriting contribution after joining Oasis was "Hung in a Bad Place", which appeared on Oasis' 5th album Heathen Chemistry and was said to resemble Heavy Stereo. This song was picked up for use in a commercial for Victoria's Secret in the US. His role has expanded on Oasis' most recent album, Don't Believe the Truth, which features Archer's "A Bell Will Ring" and "Love Like a Bomb", the latter of which he co-wrote with singer Liam Gallagher. He also contributed the B-sides "Eyeball Tickler" and "The Quiet Ones" - an acoustic song much like Liam's "Songbird". Gem has said that he finds it quite daunting to submit songs for consideration to the band because of Noel Gallagher's stature as a songwriter, whom he cites as one of his favourite songwriters.

Andy Bell highlights Archer's significance to Oasis saying "Oasis has completely evolved. Noel's old mates left, he's been divorced and really changed his own life around. He still has Liam but his relationship with Liam is different - It's more tempestuous. He needs a less extreme mate and Gem's it. Gem chills Noel out. And that makes Oasis a more stable ship."

Other work

Gem also had a role in making the Nine Inch Nails' record With Teeth in middle-2004 before starting final sessions in October 2004 for Don't Believe the Truth. He also assisted Noel Gallagher in producing the first Proud Mary album, a band signed to Gallagher's Sour Mash record label.

Mcfly's Tom Fletcher Reckons His Songwriting Skills Rival Noel Gallagher

Tom Fletcher, McFly's songwriter and frontman, has penned a truly extraordinary 10 number one singles.

That’s a staggering achievement for anyone, but for someone who is still only 22, it’s a feat that is nothing short of remarkable.

The acclaim awarded to similarly successful hit-makers like Gary Barlow and Guy Chambers is yet to be afforded to the youthful strummer.

And he’s not happy about it.

“I’m definitely not mentioned in the same breath as people like that,” he says.

Tom even reckons that his hit-penning ability rivals that of Noel Gallagher.

He says: “Someone once said to me that if OASIS had done Room On The Third Floor it would have been heralded as one of the greatest songs of all time. I said to them: ‘You could be right’. I see our music like that.”

Fame And Fortune Not About To Change Hatton

The walls of Hatton's home are adorned with memorabilia he has acquired over the years. Several years ago, he became a serious collector, and he has framed and autographed posters of some of his favorite actors and movies around his house, actors such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Sharon Stone and Clint Eastwood. There is a guitar on display at the bottom of his stairs, signed by the Gallagher brothers -- Liam and Noel -- of Oasis fame, who grew up about 15 minutes away. At their last concert two years ago at the City of Manchester Stadium, the band dedicated a song to Hatton.

"I was on holiday in Tenerife," Hatton explained, "and my phone started bleeping with text messages. There was a whole load of them, and I thought, 'Flippin' hell, what's this?' The next minute, someone rang, and I said, 'What's up?' They said, 'We're at the Oasis concert, and they just dedicated a song to you.' Apparently, Liam went up to the mike and went, 'Manchester, this one's for Ricky Hatton,' and the whole place erupted. It's incredible, really."

Sienna Miller's Love Duet With Rhys Ifans

Sienna Miller and Rhys Ifans are set to record a duet.

The pair, who are believed to have been dating since August, are planning to emulate their music idols Oasis and perform a romantic rock track.

A source said: "Rhys really likes Oasis, particularly Noel Gallagher so that's the kind of music he would like to make."

Sienna has always dreamed of being a famous singer and is confident of chart success with Rhys. The source added to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Sienna really enjoys singing and always wanted to be a rock star. Rhys has been very encouraging and convinced her to do something about pursuing her dreams."

Rhys, who plays the guitar, was in the original line-up for Welsh band the Super Furry Animals. The 'Notting Hill' actor recently returned to the recording studio to work on new material with his former bandmate, drummer Dafydd Ieuan.

Rhys is close friends with Oasis stars Noel and Liam Gallagher and famously starred in the video for their UK number one single 'The Importance of Being Idle'.

Russell Brand Ribs Noel Gallagher About His Stalker

Any admirers of the back-combed, snake-hipped lothario who had been caught unawares by the extent to which he likes to interact with the audience during and after the show last time the Essex playboy was in town, were certainly not going to let another opportunity slip them by.

Dressed to the nines (and then some) Manchester singletons did their up most to catch his eye from the moment he flounced on stage and immediately set about integrating with the audience with a spontaneous walkabout.

And to be fair, it’s not difficult to see why his magnetic pull is so strong, as the 32-year-old positive drips with sexual charisma and yet like his hero Morrissey, still manages to remain somewhat enigmatic.

Despite suffering from a cold - the dreaded man-flu I assume - Brand got off to a flyer.

When you’ve got Noel Gallagher’s number on your person it would be churlish not to capitalise on it in the Oasis man’s home town, so after getting no joy with his mobile he, relieved, struck gold on his landline and proceeded to rib him about a reported stalker who had apparently claimed to have penned Noel songs.

Noel, as ever, gave as good as he got before returning to his boiling kettle!

After pulling up a bar stool Russell then delved into the pages of the South Manchester Reporter for inspiration, but devoid of any Red Top-type shenanigans he started to struggle, instead borrowing a fresh-faced teen called Ben’s mobile in an attempt to ring a Chorlton curry house to explain the claims in their advert.

Liam Gallagher On His Favourite John Lennon Track

The January issue of UNCUT is on sale now, featuring an all-star panel of musicians selecting their favourite song by the late Beatle John Lennon.

30: Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)

From the John Lennon & Yoko Ono album, Double Fantasy (November 1980)

Written for son Sean, then aged five, and partially inspired by the writings of French psychologist Emile Coue, "Beautiful Boy" sees Lennon extolling the simple joy of fatherhood.

Liam Gallagher, Oasis

"Little James was inspired by "Beautiful Boy" and "Hey Jude". More "Beautiful Boy".

People who've got any soul will realise that there's a day when you go home and put your feet up and cuddle your kids. If anyone slags it off, they've either got no heart or they don't know what the meaning of life is.

They just go out and do-do-do-do-do the same thing everyday. So f**K them. You can't win with these people.

They're going, "You're the wild man of rock, you're this, you don't f**king care," and when you do show a bit of caring, they call you a poof...

Originally, I wanted it to be acoustic. Have you heard Lennon's demos? They're dead crackly, and it's just on the guitar, and that's the way I'd like to write music. But if it's gonna be on an Oasis album, it's gotta be big, hasn't it?

So then I played it to Noel, he went away with the band and he goes: "What do you think of this?"

I went: It's f**king top."
