Stuff We Love: Liam Gallagher's Shoes

Our kid had a bespoke pair of these Albian-aping slipper-type shoes made for him.

As Primal Scream's Mani said: "Liam has the best shoes... they say if you want to see the mark of a man check out his shoes first. Well Liam has great shoes, Liam knows about it."

And who are we to disagree... www.triggerfishshoes.co.uk

Kasabian, Oasis And The Monkeys Magical Night Out

We're sure Kasabians beanpole guitarist Serge Pizzorno has enjoyed some wizard nights out, but none as magical as when he, Noel Gallagher and Alex Turner headed to the This Feeling clubnight in London's Parker McMillan bar the other week.

The reason? A certain "hip-hop magician" at the bar named Dynamo who, after getting his hand-blur magic he won himself a big smacker on the lips. "I did a trick with Serge's hands," Dynamo recalls.

"I think he was impressed - he gave me a massive kiss on the lips afterwards. Ha ha! He's a good looking fella, but I wouldn't go that far."

Serge wasn't the only indie star Dynamo was wowing. "I did a few tricks for Noel - his girlfriend's a big fan," he explains "Although I didn't get to do any magic on Alex Turner - he arrived when I was leaving".

Oasis Mixing New Album This Week

Noel Gallagher and co about to finish seventh record

Oasis are reportedly mixing their latest album in Los Angeles this week, it has been reported today (January 9).

According to a report on US radio station G Rock, the band’s seventh studio record is being mixed after Oasis finished recording sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios late last year.

The band also recorded and mixed part of their last album, 2005's 'Don't Believe The Truth', in the city with producer Dave Sardy, who is based there.

At the time Noel Gallagher told NME.COM he had been initially reluctant to work in Los Angeles, but eventually enjoyed the experience.

“I’ve got to say I was bit nervous going to America because it’s a bit like being in a little spaceship going into the Death Star in ’Star Wars’ when you go over to that country, especially Los Angeles,” he declared. “I was like ‘Fucking hell, there’s loads of idiots with long hair. I don’t want to meet any rappers or anyone in a rock band’ but once we got over the initial hurdle it was great. We were in our own little bubble.”

The album is expected to be released in the spring. However, the band have yet to confirm any details.

Fratelli’s, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets & Fun Lovin Criminals Announced!

Following weeks of speculation and rumour about the Versus Cancer line up, we can announce that the phenomenal Fratelli’s, legendary Manchester acts The Happy Mondays & the Inspiral Carpets, and New York’s finest the Fun Lovin’ Criminals will be amongst the acts playing at the concert.

More big name announcements will also be announced in the coming weeks so watch this space.

The concert will be The Fratelli’s first gig in Manchester for almost a year. The band had a mammoth 2007 with sold out Manchester shows, acclaimed festival performances and a Brit Award for Best British Breakthrough Act.

Legendary Madchester acts The Happy Mondays and the Inspiral Carpets are geared up to provide some of the local indie flavour that we at Versus Cancer are famous for. Fresh from their major comeback in 2007, the Mondays are set to treat the arena crowd to some of their greatest hits as well as one-off collaborations following Sean and Bez’s part in the all star finale of ‘Wrote for Luck’ at our 2006 concert alongside Peter Hook, Mani, Andy Rourke, Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr.

Last but certainly not least, arguably one of the most famous bands to come out of New York, the Fun Lovin Criminals are set to bring an international slant to the bill. The band, which first formed in 1993, have become legends of the music scene and now nearly 15 years on, and 9 albums later, they’re set to take to the stage of the MEN Arena with some exciting one off collaborations with the Happy Mondays.

We hope to see you there! (Tickets are still on sale)

Production company UK One is set to bring New Order, Paul Weller, Ian Brown, Noel Gallagher and The Charlatans to the small screen, after winning the job of working on the Versus Cancer concert DVDs.

Ian Brown does his thingUK One will provide the editing for the last two concerts prior to their DVD release and televisual broadcast. The firm was the only North West company in the final running for the job.

Steven Chapman told How-Do that his team are looking to maximise the amount they can help Versus Cancer raise from the release, and as such took “the unusual step of helping the charity get a broadcaster and an ad-funder/sponsor.”

He added: “Fortunately with such major names attached, there are already several networks interested in viewing the footage. There are also a great number of sponsors looking to get involved, although we're still looking at further possibilities.”

UK One is also known for its endeavours in helping to bring The Tube back to TV, and staging the show in Manchester.

Cancer charity Versus Cancer, which is spearheaded by Andy Rourke of The Smiths, has so far raised over quarter of a million pounds to help fight the disease.

Ricky Hatton To Challenge Oasis In The Charts? Round Two

These pictures were sent in to me today from Dirty Weekend band member Kevin O, who's band played with Ricky Hatton at the Rockyoke that night.

He would also like to point out that Ricky's performance that night was 'knockout!' and not as portrayed in certain tabloids.

He also added if any of the visitors to the site think they can do better, come down, Wednesday Nights, Stalybridge! bring it on!

Internet Auction Sites 'Exploit' Fans

Resale of live event tickets slammed in government report

A group of MPs are set to call for an industry code of conduct on the resale of event tickets, especially through internet auction sites.

The report, to be published on Thursday (January 10), will also say that the auction sites have exploited fans, including those of music gigs and festivals, by allowing touts to re-sell at inflated prices.

The BBC also claims today that the report, from the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, will call for the threat of action by The Office of Fair Trading if no code is agreed.

Senior promoters and figures within the music industry have long called for touting to be made illegal - however the government has always stopped short of such a measure. Tickets for football matches cannot be resold.

Since May, the committee has been investigating whether the resale of tickets is acceptable. It looked at the underlying causes of ticket touting, and its impact on performers, promoters and the public.

It also examined whether resale of a ticket, at face value or at a higher value, should be permitted in principle, and the impact of the internet upon trade in tickets.

Oasis Back On The Piste

Noel and Liam Gallagher enjoyed a booze bender during a Swiss ski trip and proved they’re still party animals.

And there seemed no stopping the Oasis boys as they got stuck into beverages at a bar in the Champery resort.

Both Noel, 40, and Liam, 35, had enjoyed an afternoon on the piste before strolling into Mitchells bar.

An onlooker said: “Noel and Liam arrived early evening and ordered a couple of wraps and some chips. “They seemed to be with family and friends and they were all having a hoot.

“Both Noel and Liam wiled away the hours playing cards with their party and one of their mates was singing some Oasis songs.

“They all moved on to some other apres-ski bars, grabbed a bite to eat and then persuaded the bar owners to stay open late. “The party was still going strong by 4am and the lads led the way as their friends belted out a version of Supersonic.”

The source added: “The boys had downed pints of Guinness as well as several margaritas.

“Champery is sleepy so villagers were stunned when some bars stayed open until four just for the Gallaghers.

“Owners heard they were in town so they were all quite keen to entice them both to stay and drink at their haunts.”

And who can blame them? After all, Noel and Liam are one of a kind.

The Manc rock lords more than deserved to let their locks down after spending last month at a north London studio where they worked all day and night on their seventh album.

Liam, who has three children, and Noel, who has two, were famed for their love of partying in the 90s. So it’s good to know they still have the taste for Cigarettes And Alcohol.

And they can seriously make up for our January detox malarkey, which is driving us mad.

This Much I Know

Meg Mathews

Interior designer, 41, London

I first met Noel [Gallagher] in London in 1994. Definitely Maybe was out but it hadn't gone crazy yet. He was going out with my flatmate at the time, which made it all a bit difficult.

I remember Liam and Noel's squabbling and moodiness. The only way to guarantee they would be happy was to get Peggy [their mother] down.

The Oasis Knebworth concerts were very happy days for me. It was the biggest gig of their lives and that morning Noel went missing. Everyone was worried. He'd gone to a jeweller and bought me a Cartier watch with the inscription 'Forever and a day'. I've kept it for Anais.

People think I named my daughter after the perfume Anais Anais. The perfume company even sent me a lifetime supply! But I named her after the writer Anais Nin. She had an amazing time in Paris in the Twenties - hanging out with Hemingway, smoking opium, orgies, drink...

I thought 'Wonderwall' was about me. It was for a while. Then when we got divorced he took it away. He said it wasn't about me. But it's his song so he decides.

I've been back to Supernova Heights since David Walliams bought it. It was a bit eerie at first. So much happened there. I can still see one of the Charlatans breaking his leg falling down the limestone floating staircase.

I never got over my divorce. That's what I discovered in rehab. I was trying so hard to be strong and say 'I'm fine' and it caught up with me. It's still the longest relationship I've had.

Me and Noel are fine now. I couldn't see myself growing old with him... not the happiest of people.

Versus Cancer is to return for a third year running.

The huge fund-raising concert organised by former Smiths legend Andy Rourke will once again takeover the M.E.N. Arena on February 23.

Last year saw unforgettable performances by Oasis' guitarist Noel Gallagher, Manc indie-rock veterans The Charlatans and Modfather Paul Weller.

Details of 2008's line-up are set to be announced in recent weeks.

On the concert Rourke told Xfm Manchester: "Next year’s gig is going to be talked about for years to come. We’ve got some of the biggest bands of the moment lined up as well as some legendary acts that haven’t performed live for a long time.

Special

"It is also the start of something special for us.

"We’ve created a campaign ‘Join the Line Up’ that centres around the Versus Cancer badge - basically, we’ve always been about loads of people getting together to make a stand and do something special, and this year we wanted everyone to be able to be a part of it."

Versus Cancer is Manchester's biggest fundraising event, raising money for cancer research and awareness with last year's event raising £250,000 alone.

Versus Cancer takes place on Saturday, February 23. Tickets are £40. For details of how you can join the line-up, show your support and book tickets NOW, simply visit www.versuscancer.org.

Q. Is it true Noel Gallagher gave you a guitar for your birthday sprayed in Man City colours with the lyrics to Blue Moon written on it?

A. Yes. But at the end of the day it's unique.

Q. Some reports suggested you've given it away - are you planning to keep it?

A. Of course I'm going to keep it! It's a birthday present and I keep all my birthday presents.

Queen Declared 'Top British Band'

Rockers Queen have beaten The Beatles to be crowned greatest British band of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners.

They pipped the Fab Four in a live contest, trouncing other finalists The Rolling Stones, Oasis and Take That.

The bands were judged on song-writing, lyrics, live performances, originality and showmanship.

More than 20,000 listeners voted by email, text and phone. The five finalists had been selected over the previous week by Radio 2 listeners.

DJ Mark Goodier then hosted a three-hour live New Year's Day show in which a host of celebrity guests, including boy band McFly, joined listeners in debating who should win the title.

After all the votes had been totted up, the winner was then announced live on air - and it was revealed that Queen had beaten the Beatles by just 400 votes.

Queen, led by flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, released a string of hit records throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s - including Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975, widely regarded as one of the best UK singles of all time.

The Big Names Are Back For 2008

The big guns are out and, if they’re not firing blanks, 2008 should be one of the great years for new music.

Oasis: The light blue side of Manchester has plenty to celebrate with Sven’s boys flying high . . . and the prospect of a seventh Oasis album. Noel, Liam and Co began recording it on November 5 with Don’t Believe The Truth producer Dave Sardy. The buzz? Sonic fireworks.

U2: The band have been writing and recording in France and Morocco. With Joshua Tree pair Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois back in tow, the follow-up to 2004’s How To Dismantle An Atom Bomb might be a U2 masterpiece.

Coldplay: Eno is also producer on Coldplay’s fourth album, rumoured to be called Prospekt. It’s thought to be a concise album and the one “people will remember them by”. Among song titles are Famous Old Painters, Glass Of Water, Poppy Fields and Leftrightleftrightleft.

Dido: It’s been a long wait for a new long player by the mega-selling Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong. Her first since 2003’s Life For Rent has been delayed by the death of her father and is said to be inspired by drives down the west coast of America. Expected songs include Look No Further, Never Want To Say It’s Love and Grafton Street. Sony BMG’s big hope for 2008.

Madonna: Expect a hip-hop flavoured album from Her Madge. The eleventh and last studio album for Warner lines up the stellar talents of Timbaland and Pharell Williams. First single is probably 4 Minutes To Save The World, with Justin Timberlake.

Green Day: Few records made such an impact in the Noughties as Green Day’s 2004 magnum opus American Idiot. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong has written around 45 songs to be considered for their follow-up eighth studio album.

Kasabian: The lovable Leicester lot are pretty excited about their third album. Singer Tom Meighan has enthused: “It’s gonna be progressive and it sounds like an owl at night-time.” Guitarist Serge Pizzorno revealed he’s written a song inspired by Syd Barrett.

Razorlight: If it’s as big as Johnny Borrell’s ego, Razorlight’s third album will be an all-conquering, multi-platinum classic. Johnny went into the studio with the band on October 29 to start writing it. SFTW approves. Rock needs characters like him.

Keane: Tom Chaplin has popped into rehab since 2006’s Under The Iron Sea but things are looking up for Keane’s next record. Tom revealed that 15 songs have been written and communication between band members has improved.

R.E.M.: Even Stipe, Buck and Mills weren’t overjoyed with 2004’s Around The Sun but signs are that the Jacknife Lee-produced Accelerate (out March 31) is a return to form. Confirmed tracks include Until The Day Is Done, Living Well Is The Best Revenge, Mr Richards and I’m Gonna DJ (a set regular on their 2004/05 world tour.) Stipe says the guitar-driven LP is “the fastest we’ve made in 20 years”.

The Verve: Of all the reunions, it’s the ones that deliver new product that count the most. Richard Ashcroft and Co’s first album since 1997’s towering Urban Hymns is one of 2008’s most anticipated musical events. Bassist Simon Jones said songs are called Sit And Wonder, Judas, Appalachian Springs, Mona Lisa and Rather Be.

The Fratellis: The Scots rockers won Best Breakthrough Act at the 2007 Brits for debut Costello Music. In November, they booked rehearsal space to start the second album.

Hot Chip: One of the year’s first big-hitters is Made In The Dark, the rockier third album by London’s electro-popsters. Single Shake A Fist served notice of a bolder and brighter approach.

The Raconteurs: Jack White thinks of The Raconteurs as way more than a side project. He says the band’s sophomore album is “very different” from Broken Boy Soldiers and that it’s “coming out great”. Recorded at Blackbird Studios in Jack’s adopted home of Nashville.

The Kooks: Brighton’s hugely popular indie act have once again teamed up with producer Tony Hoffer. They’ve named the new album Konk after the London studios where they recorded it. Singer Luke Pritchard promises a “dynamic, modern yet warm and roots-based sound”.

The Feeling: We’ve got a “feeling” that the soft-rockers will sidestep the second album wobbles of many a band. Join With Us arrives mid-February and looks set to build on the success of 12 Stops And Home. First single: I Thought It Was Over.

Franz Ferdinand: Let’s hope the Scottish art rockers aren’t governed by the law of diminishing returns. Singer Alex Kapranos has revealed a secret weapon . . . “an old Russian synthesiser built from spare parts in the Cold War”. One new song is Lucid Dreams.

The Streets: Mike Skinner recently posted a new song on his MySpace reminiscent of his Original Pirate Material days before replacing it with his blinding cover of Sir Elt’s Your Song. Don’t write off a singular talent.

Antony & The Johnsons: Few will forget Antony’s hauntingly beautiful delivery on the Mercury-winning I Am A Bird Now. New album The Crying Light arrives early summer.

Robbie Williams: Wouldn’t we all just love a return to form by Robbie, particular after the decidedly patchy Rudebox and the success of his old muckers Take That. His next album is rumoured to feature songwriting partner Guy Chambers and has been slated for an autumn release.
