Oasis - The Shock Of The Lightning Single Review

There aren't many bands around that after fourteen years, six albums and two-dozen singles can still create a mad rush of excitement whenever they announce the release of their next record. The Gallagher brothers may have spent the last twelve months out of the media spotlight but that time hasn't been spent relaxing or resting on their laurels. With album number seven, 'Dig Out Your Soul' imminent and a string of arena shows booked for the remainder of the year, it seems the Oasis machine is back in full swing, despite the odd Canadian altercation.

'The Shock Of The Lightning' then. Don't necessarily believe the hype. It isn't their best four minutes since 'Definitely Maybe' (that honour surely belongs to 'The Hindu Times', no?) and thankfully, is by no means their worst either. It's not going to change too many people's opinions on Oasis whether they are good or bad, and certainly makes no attempt at reinventing their sound either. As with pretty much every record they've made since the execrable 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' was despatched and promptly cast aside quicker than you can say "Bad move, Noel.", Oasis have stuck to a formula that attracted their loyal fan base in the first place; no holds barred rock and roll that wears its influences proudly on its sleeves, but first and foremost, sounds unmistakeably like an Oasis record should - loud, brash, and supremely arrogant in its unifying defiance of any criticism it will no doubt receive from their many detractors.

Sure there's the odd Beatles reference in the slightly cheesy lyrics ("Love is a litany/a magical mystery.") that's perhaps best skated over, but musically 'The Shock Of The Lightning' sounds taut and uncompromising, from its incessant riff borrowed from? And The Mysterians '96 Tears' to the fact each individual member seems to have been given a license to express themselves here, and not just the two obvious focal points of the band.

The remixed b-side of 'Falling Down' is perhaps the most striking departure for Oasis, even if their choice of The Chemical Brothers to do the honours seems a little outdated, given their less than prolific and hardly cutting edge status this decade. Nevertheless, the rolling beats and warped strings coupled with Noel Gallagher's vocal make this the missing link between 'Setting Sun' and 'Let Forever Be' that (maybe) both parties have been striving for all this time.

Business as usual then, but in all honesty, did anyone really expect anything else?

Ricky Hatton To Host Nuts TV Chat Show

Ricky Hatton is to host a live weekly chat show on Nuts TV in the channel's highest profile commission to date.

The 6 x 60-minute Ricky Speaks is made by Daisybeck Productions and will air in the run-up to Hatton's next fight against Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas.

Hatton has performed as a stand-up comedian in the past and the series will showcase his irreverent humour, as well as his more serious side, following the launch of his Ricky Hatton Boxing Gym in Manchester.

The format will include topical sports discussion, showbiz chat and insight into Hatton's training regime. The series will be co-hosted by former Talk Sport presenter Dom McGuiness and will be filmed at the Press Club in Manchester. It will also feature exclusive live links to Hatton in his Las Vegas training camp.

Ricky Speaks is expected to draw an array of celebrity guests from the boxer's contacts book. A spokeswoman for the Turner Broadcasting-run channel said it hoped the boxer would be joined by some of his high-profile friends, including Liam and Noel Gallagher and footballer Wayne Rooney.

Turner Broadcasting senior vice-president and general manager Dee Forbes said securing Hatton's services was testament to the quality of the channel.

"He's the perfect fit for our audience who will be treated to a unique insight into the world of Ricky Hatton," said Forbes.

The series will begin at the end of the month, with five of the six episodes airing on consecutive Sundays. The final episode will go out after the fight on 22 November.

Hatton has been upping his TV profile in recent months and featured in a two-part fly-on-the-wall doc series made by Mentorn Media for Sky One, called At Home with the Hattons.

Oasis' Noel Gallagher Confirms Solo Album Plan

Plus the guitarist discusses his spat with Jay-Z

Oasis' Noel Gallagher has confirmed that he plans to release a solo album.

The guitarist told Blender that he hoped the four members of Oasis would each undertake individual projects following the release of their forthcoming album 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

"I'd like for us to do separate projects after this record," he said. "We'd all have to agree on it, so it will probably never happen. I've got loads of new songs. Somewhat predictably, they're all brilliant."

The news follows Noel Gallagher telling NME.COM last year that he was collecting songs together for a possible solo release and arranging a series of solo acoustic gigs.

Gallagher also spoke to Blender about his spat with Glastonbury headliner Jay-Z, who he had previously suggested was wrong for Glastonbury.

"What did I think of Jay-Z doing 'Wonderwall'?" he asked refering to the cover of the song the rapper played to open his Glastonbury Festival set this summer. "It was pretty funny. But I'm not sure one should be seen in public with a white Stratocaster."

Amy Winehouse Won't Live Forever

Amy Winehouse will soon be dead, according to Noel Gallagher.

The Oasis guitarist has a number of songs left over from sessions for the band's new album 'Dig Out Your Soul' which he thinks Amy, 25, would be perfect for, but believes her rampant drug use will kill her soon.

He told NME magazine: "I've got a backlog of 30-odd songs just sitting there. I don't know what the f**k I'm going to do with them all.

"Could I give them to someone else to sing? Well, there's a few that sound like girls could sing them, but who?

"F**king Amy Winehouse? She'll be dead before I write another one."

However, the 41-year-old musician thinks Welsh songstress Duffy would be a good match for some of his music.

He said: "That Duffy's alright. I could imagine her singing a few of the tracks. But I might put them forward for a film, although I don't want them to end up in any romantic comedies."

'Dig Out Your Soul', which includes single 'The Shock of the Lightning', is released on October 6.

Oasis, Radiohead, Garbage, Bloc Party, And More Give 'Listen' Help.

Some of the most recognizable names in indie and alternative music have donated new, unreleased, live and remixed songs for the benefit compilation, Give. Listen. Help. Volume 5, a double CD created in support of the Pablove Foundation. This charity has been established in honor of Pablo Castelaz, the 5-year-old son of Dangerbird Records' co-founder Jeff Castelaz and his wife Jo Ann Thrailkill, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment.

The album will be sold at all Urban Outfitters locations beginning Wednesday, October 15 until January 31, 2009, and is comprised of more than 25 tracks, featuring Radiohead, Oasis, Jack Johnson, Garbage, Bloc Party, Rilo Kiley, CSS and many others on disc one, while Dangerbird's tight-knit family, including Silversun Pickups, The Dears, Sea Wolf and Darker My Love, have rallied for the cause on disc two.

On May 17, 2008, Pablo, the effervescent, boisterous preschooler, was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms' Tumor, a rare form of children's cancer that strikes less than 500 American kids a year. The cancer appeared out of nowhere. In the past month, Pablo has endured four surgeries in merely sixteen days, resulting with the removal of his right kidney and a third of his left kidney. He is currently on a nine-month chemotherapy regimen and an 11-day radiation treatment, equating to months in and out of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), and countless hours in the oncology clinic.

Over these past few grueling months Castelaz, Jo Ann and Pablo's older brother Grady have experienced the love and dedication from doctors, researchers, administrators and legions of volunteers they've encountered and so in turn, they want to give back. Every penny raised through the Pablove Foundation will go to CHLA, specifically directed toward play rooms, cancer research at the CHLA Saban Research Institute and to the new hospital set to open in 2009. Each year, CHLA treats over 93,000 children who need care that is so complex, it can only be provided by medical experts at the highest level.

Every artist on these two discs has made a choice to participate, and to donate the usual fees and royalties to the Pablove Foundation. Kicking off with a previously unreleased track by Garbage (they completed this song especially for Pablo), the album is crammed with rarities from a who's who of alternative music all-stars. Disc two proudly displays Castelaz's other passion, his label Dangerbird Records which he co-founded with Peter Walker, with rare and unreleased tracks from his beloved musical family - most of whom have watched Pablo grow up.

Although Pablo's form of Wilms' Tumor is the toughest, most rare kind, his treatment is advancing well. His progress has been chronicled on PABLOg, a blog fueled by Castelaz's daily newfound trials and tribulations, eloquently written with an equal dose of humility and humor.

Liam Gallagher: I'm A Lazy Dad

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has told how his kids nag at him for lounging around the house doing nothing.

Liam, 35, said Lennon, eight, Gene, seven and Molly, ten, tell him off when they stay with him.

The singer, who claims his wilder days are behind him, said: My kids are getting to the age where they’re like, ‘how come you get to lie in bed all day and I’ve got to go to school?’

Noel Gallagher Is Skeptical About Brother Liam's Lennon Love

Noel Gallagher refuses to share brother Liam's devotion to all things John Lennon, insisting the Oasis frontman's romantic notions about the late Beatles star are ridiculous.

Liam Gallagher claims he has been touched by Lennon's spirit and insists working at the Fab Four's Abbey Road studio home in London is a magical experience - two things his older brother fails to understand.

Noel tells Spin magazine, "He told me he thought a cold chill had touched him in (Lennon's widow) Yoko's apartment. I put it to him it was the f**king air-conditioning. Yoko's getting on a bit now; she probably has it set on minus 16.

"Liam is very romantic about all that. I'm more skeptical. He thinks recording in Abbey Road is special because of the Beatles. I think it's a studio with s**t gear in it. We had to bring all our own, for f**k's sake."

But the older Gallagher admits he's not completely surprised by his brother's Lennon devotion - he once bought a rug that used to be in John Lennon's house in Weybridge, England: "I've got no idea where it is now."

Noel Gallagher On Recording Be Here Now And More

GALLAGHER REGRETS RECORDING BE HERE NOW IN PARADISE

Noel Gallagher regrets jetting off to write much-criticised Oasis album Be Here Now with celebrity pals Johnny Depp, Sir Mick Jagger and Kate Moss - because he came back with a dud.

The rocker decided to write and record the demo for the album on the Caribbean island of Mustique, while hanging out with his superstar pals - but he admits it was a big mistake.

He tells the new issue of America's Spin magazine, "I was doing it for the wrong reasons. And that’s how you get a situation where at the beginning of (Be Here Now single) D’You Know What I Mean? there’s no music for the first minute. It’s the sound of an airplane landing.

"Of course, we thought it was the most amazing thing we’d ever recorded. We took the tapes back to Sony in London, and you’ve got all the suits sitting round the boardroom stereo thinking, 'These f**king jokers are riding on the biggest expectations of any band this decade, and they have recorded a plane landing.'"

GALLAGHER WROTE FIRST THREE OASIS ALBUM ON DRUGS

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has revealed the band's first three albums were all written while he under the influence of hard drugs.

The rocker admits he penned classics like Wonderwall, Supersonic and Live Forever after snorting cocaine.

He tells the upcoming issue of Spin magazine, "Before 1997, I hadn’t written a song without the aid of the old Colombian marching gear (cocaine). Don’t forget, I was on drugs before I was even in a band. The whole of the first three albums were written on drugs.

"I remember being off my nut and going into the back room and setting the goal of writing a song in 10 minutes - that was Supersonic.
"All those albums and all the B-sides were written on drugs. That’s why they’re so good. And that p**ses me off.

"I think, 'Maybe I should get back into taking drugs, and then it would be brilliant again.' But that thought lasts less than a second.”

Oasis' Noel Gallagher Wants To Write The Next 'James Bond' Theme

Read a free extract from NME's exclusive cover story

Noel Gallagher has told NME that he's got more spare songs than he knows what to do with, and would like some of them to be used as the next James Bond theme.

Oasis speak about their new album 'Dig Out Your Soul', knife crime and what they'd do if they were Mayor of London, in an exclusive cover story in this week's NME.

Now check out an exclusive free extract from the interview on NME.COM, then get your copy on UK newsstands now.

....The songs are coming quickly, with three of Noel's - 'The Shock Of The Lightning', 'Falling Down' and another newie 'Come On, It's Alright' - being written in a matter of days. In fact, he's now got "a backlog of thirty-odd songs, just sitting there".

"I don't know what the fuck I'm going to do with them all," he sighs. "Could I give them to someone else to sing? Well, there's a few that sound like girls could sing them, you know? But who? Fucking Amy Winehouse? She'll be dead before I write another one. That Duffy's alright. I might do them for a film, but I don't want them to be stuck in divvy romantic comedies."

How about a Bond theme? Jack White's just done one.

"It's a bit of a piss-take that the greatest British agent of all time has to be soundtracked by a bunch of fucking Americans. But yep, I've written a couple of Bond theme tunes."

Really? What are they called?

"Er, they haven't got very Bond-esque titles, so I would have to tailor the title accordingly. The latest one that I wrote, I listened back to it thinking, 'fucking hell man! That'd make a fucking great Bond theme'. But it's called 'Freaky Teeth'. Now, unless there's a James Bond film that comes out in the next ten years that's very, very psychedelic..."

Or they could bring Jaws back...

"Yeah! I dunno, I would never write a song called 'A Different Way To Die' or 'Die Another Day', there's always something about death, isn't there?"

Maybe you could do 'Live Forever'.

"I could, but I'd have to re-record it. Getting back to the point, I have no idea what I'll do with these songs."...
