Oasis Are £1m Manchester City Gig Target

Oasis have been placed at the centre of Manchester City’s masterplan to be the world’s biggest club.

City’s new owners want to launch their new era with a huge party in the City of Manchester stadium next summer — with Oasis topping the bill.

The Abu Dhabi United Group — who bought the club for £220million this month — will pay whatever it takes, so the lads are in line for a £1million windfall.

The idea came up after the new team in charge of the club asked current worker to help them draw up a blueprint for the brand.

They also suggested the rockers could re-record club theme Blue Moon for the team to run out to at home games.

An insider revealed: “Employees who know the club inside out were asked to put forward suggestions.

“The owners want to ally themselves with strong brands and see Oasis as playing a vital role helping to move the club forward very quickly.

“They hope to use the Gallaghers — the club’s most famous fans — to improve the brand and relationship with fans.

“Acts such as Oasis don’t come cheap — but obviously that isn’t an issue.”

Oasis To Play The Eden Project For Free?

Oasis look set to play their big UK tour curtain-raiser at the Eden Project in Cornwall – for free.

Peter Hampel, Eden’s creative director, said: “It’s still being confirmed but it looks highly unlikely they will get a fee.”

The September 27 gig will be broadcast by MTV.

How Oasis Paid My Rent

When the band asked busker Theo Eastwind to perform songs from their new album, he couldn't really say no

Last week, I met Oasis to help them preview their forthcoming album, Dig Out Your Soul. I rehearsed some of the songs from the new album with some other street artists and then we all went out to perform them on the subway.

I used to play "Wonderwall" around the New York subways between 1995 and 1998. It was new at the time and everyone else was going down the classic rock route, "Stairway to Heaven" and what have you. My whole set revolved around when I was going to play "Wonderwall" – that song paid my rent.

I've been in New York for 13 years. My job fell through when I arrived here and I didn't want to go back home to Austria. The day before my plane ticket ran out I had $3.75 to my name. I sat there all night looking at that ticket. I eventually decided to stay and keep playing and I've been busking ever since. I'm so glad I made that decision. I've won the Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition, the only decent songwriting competition in Brooklyn. I'm proud to be a busker.

Then out of the blue last week, at the behest of the band, someone asked me to play songs from the new Oasis album in the subway for $100. I wasn't sure. I mean, $100 is not really enough for me to learn someone else's songs. But then I remembered all the good things about "Wonderwall": I got gigs at weddings and parties playing that song. I thought it would be great to meet them and thank them for writing it. So I did. I met Liam and thanked him for writing "Wonderwall" – but Liam didn't write it. I wish he'd just said, "Thank you," as opposed to saying, "I didn't write it," but I thanked him like a dumb ass anyway. I guess I should have made it clearer that I was really thanking the whole band.

That said, Liam was extremely nice. I liked his Manchester accent. He listened to my version of "The Turning" with Andy (Bell, bassist) and Gem (Archer, guitar) and they all loved it. Liam said, "You'll do!" I told him that was the best compliment I've had in years. Gem and Andy were really nice, too, and it was interesting to get to see the dynamics of the group. It's a rock band and you expect them to be a bit, well, oblivious to reality, but Andy and Gem seem "hand-picked" for Oasis – very patient and very calm. I think you'd have to be when you're hanging out with Liam and Noel all day. They listen, but Liam doesn't. He just talks, and he'd obviously already had a couple of drinks. But it was awesome to meet him. He had his sunglasses on so there wasn't a human connection, it was more like a "same time, same place" connection. We all went on the roof and he told me that he used to play Christmas carols in the subways in Manchester. I told him I never played carols, that I always refuse to play the songs that everyone else plays. He said, "But I did that!" and I said, "Well, you sold out!" He said "Yeah! I sold out early!" and we had a good laugh. I enjoyed myself thoroughly – it's not every day you meet an icon of modern society. Oasis have been around, they're kind of the bootleg Beatles.

I only played one of their new songs, "The Turning" – they were only paying a hundred bucks. Some of my friends played four songs but I'm more of a focused performer. I do one song and I do it well. We were supposed to do four songs and wing it. I thought, "I'm going to do one song and make it a killer." My version is really interesting, it kills you. I only had a couple of hours to practise, which is not long at all. I did brush through the other songs but "The Turning" was the one. I thought it had the most potential to be another hit.

I listened to the new album and I don't think it's got another "Wonderwall" on it, but that's just my opinion. It grows on you. It's not one of those albums that when you play it, you love it right from the top and then you listen to it five or six times and you're done with it. If you don't like Oasis or you're not a fan, then it's another Beatles rip-off. But I listened to it, and I listened to it about 10 times, and what I loved about it is that you discover all these new things every time you give it another go. It's definitely one of their better albums. Andy and Gem both wrote a song for the album, too. It's a very cool, well-crafted album and it has a great sound. The vocals are great, as are the lyrics – well, I would stay away from the word "rapture" in any of my songs (for me that's a no-no), but they use it on "The Turning". "(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady" is a very simple jam that you'd really enjoy singing to yourself down the street. It's a cool song, a bluesy little jam. I also like "The Shock of the Lightning" but I actually think I preferred my friend Dagmar's [a fellow street artist] version to Noel's.

When we played the tracks, there was a huge crowd and they were really positive. Gem and Andy definitely had a real respect for what I do after they heard me play my version of "The Turning". Before I played for them I was just another dude, but after I finished, they came over and we had a chat. Gem offered me tickets to see them at Madison Square Garden, but I don't think it will happen – it would spoil the experience.

Oasis - The Shock Of The Lightning Single Review

There aren't many bands around that after fourteen years, six albums and two-dozen singles can still create a mad rush of excitement whenever they announce the release of their next record. The Gallagher brothers may have spent the last twelve months out of the media spotlight but that time hasn't been spent relaxing or resting on their laurels. With album number seven, 'Dig Out Your Soul' imminent and a string of arena shows booked for the remainder of the year, it seems the Oasis machine is back in full swing, despite the odd Canadian altercation.

'The Shock Of The Lightning' then. Don't necessarily believe the hype. It isn't their best four minutes since 'Definitely Maybe' (that honour surely belongs to 'The Hindu Times', no?) and thankfully, is by no means their worst either. It's not going to change too many people's opinions on Oasis whether they are good or bad, and certainly makes no attempt at reinventing their sound either. As with pretty much every record they've made since the execrable 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' was despatched and promptly cast aside quicker than you can say "Bad move, Noel.", Oasis have stuck to a formula that attracted their loyal fan base in the first place; no holds barred rock and roll that wears its influences proudly on its sleeves, but first and foremost, sounds unmistakeably like an Oasis record should - loud, brash, and supremely arrogant in its unifying defiance of any criticism it will no doubt receive from their many detractors.

Sure there's the odd Beatles reference in the slightly cheesy lyrics ("Love is a litany/a magical mystery.") that's perhaps best skated over, but musically 'The Shock Of The Lightning' sounds taut and uncompromising, from its incessant riff borrowed from? And The Mysterians '96 Tears' to the fact each individual member seems to have been given a license to express themselves here, and not just the two obvious focal points of the band.

The remixed b-side of 'Falling Down' is perhaps the most striking departure for Oasis, even if their choice of The Chemical Brothers to do the honours seems a little outdated, given their less than prolific and hardly cutting edge status this decade. Nevertheless, the rolling beats and warped strings coupled with Noel Gallagher's vocal make this the missing link between 'Setting Sun' and 'Let Forever Be' that (maybe) both parties have been striving for all this time.

Business as usual then, but in all honesty, did anyone really expect anything else?

Ricky Hatton To Host Nuts TV Chat Show

Ricky Hatton is to host a live weekly chat show on Nuts TV in the channel's highest profile commission to date.

The 6 x 60-minute Ricky Speaks is made by Daisybeck Productions and will air in the run-up to Hatton's next fight against Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas.

Hatton has performed as a stand-up comedian in the past and the series will showcase his irreverent humour, as well as his more serious side, following the launch of his Ricky Hatton Boxing Gym in Manchester.

The format will include topical sports discussion, showbiz chat and insight into Hatton's training regime. The series will be co-hosted by former Talk Sport presenter Dom McGuiness and will be filmed at the Press Club in Manchester. It will also feature exclusive live links to Hatton in his Las Vegas training camp.

Ricky Speaks is expected to draw an array of celebrity guests from the boxer's contacts book. A spokeswoman for the Turner Broadcasting-run channel said it hoped the boxer would be joined by some of his high-profile friends, including Liam and Noel Gallagher and footballer Wayne Rooney.

Turner Broadcasting senior vice-president and general manager Dee Forbes said securing Hatton's services was testament to the quality of the channel.

"He's the perfect fit for our audience who will be treated to a unique insight into the world of Ricky Hatton," said Forbes.

The series will begin at the end of the month, with five of the six episodes airing on consecutive Sundays. The final episode will go out after the fight on 22 November.

Hatton has been upping his TV profile in recent months and featured in a two-part fly-on-the-wall doc series made by Mentorn Media for Sky One, called At Home with the Hattons.

Oasis' Noel Gallagher Confirms Solo Album Plan

Oasis' Noel Gallagher has confirmed that he plans to release a solo album.

The guitarist told Blender that he hoped the four members of Oasis would each undertake individual projects following the release of their forthcoming album 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

"I'd like for us to do separate projects after this record," he said. "We'd all have to agree on it, so it will probably never happen. I've got loads of new songs. Somewhat predictably, they're all brilliant."

The news follows Noel Gallagher telling NME.COM last year that he was collecting songs together for a possible solo release and arranging a series of solo acoustic gigs.

Gallagher also spoke to Blender about his spat with Glastonbury headliner Jay-Z, who he had previously suggested was wrong for Glastonbury.

"What did I think of Jay-Z doing 'Wonderwall'?" he asked refering to the cover of the song the rapper played to open his Glastonbury Festival set this summer. "It was pretty funny. But I'm not sure one should be seen in public with a white Stratocaster."

Carl Barat And Pete Doherty Reunite In London

Former Libertines bandmates Carl Barat and Pete Doherty reunited in London last night for an impromptu gig.

The pair performed three of the band's most famous tracks – 'Horror show', 'Time For Heroes' and 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' – as well as a cover of Oasis' 'Don't Look Back In Anger'.

The gig at the Prince of Wales pub in Kentish Town had originally been billed as a solo acoustic set from Doherty.

A host of other stars also made an appearance last night, including supermodel Alice Dellal, who DJ'd for the crowds.
