Tales From the Middle Of Nowhere

Taken from Noel's tour diary for Oasisinet.com

There's a fog upon LA (the quiet one said that). I love the fog. We don't get it much in England anymore (not round my manor anyway).

I'm growing to like this town more and more. Is that wrong?

Went to a party the other night. Andy was dj'ing. Speed dj'ing, in fact. Like a crackhead. He must've set some record for the most amount of tunes played in the least amount of time.

Got 2 days off now. Not much fun without the sun though. There's always shopping, I suppose.

Seen the shittest busker of all time yesterday in Santa Monica, but I did purchase a lovely pair of brown cords.

That's pretty much it.

In a bit.

Liam And Noel Gallagher's Brotherly Love

Put the date in your diary. It will go down in rock history.

Love and peace has broken out between Liam Gallagher and brother Noel.

The Oasis pair have had some of rock’s most infamous scraps.

But with family life now mellowing them, Liam seems full of brotherly love.

He told Loaded mag: “Me and Noel get on well now. Beautiful. It’s all right, man.”

Oasis Could Record Solo Albums

Noel Gallagher tells Radio 1's Colin Murray that it was easier writing Dig Out Your Soul than 2005's Don't Believe The Truth, admits he can't remember the recording of second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? and says he'd like the four members of Oasis to record their own material.

Is Dig Out Your Soul better then Don't Believe The Truth?

Yeah, I think so. Don't Believe The Truth is a great collection of songs but it doesn't really hang together as an album. This is more like an album in the sense that Pink Floyd made albums. It probably won't have as many big singles on it as Don't Believe The Truth but that's not a bad thing.

Listen to Noel Gallagher talking to Colin Murray

Does it feel like a second album because Don't Believe The Truth was a bit of a rebirth critically?

It feels like a first one, because we're on our own record label now. Not that we ever got any interference from Sony but it's quite liberating to think, 'This is for us now'. We've fulfilled our commitment to them and we've left them to do their own thing and vice-versa.

I'm not saying you'd like to release a solo record, but have you got any tracks that you've recorded that you set aside or didn't get recorded?

I don't specifically put songs aside. There are songs that have just fallen by the wayside that are still great but have missed their moment. Like Stop The Clocks for instance. That needs to come out soon. At the end of this tour, I'd like everyone to do something separately. I think it would be interesting for our fans.

But I also think because we've ended up with this album at a place where we were working to for the last five years. It's kind of like, 'What do we do next?'. Liam's always the first person to start rushing things. I think if he wants to get back in the saddle that quick, he should do it for himself. He's got tonnes and tonnes of songs.

Is making records getting easier with age and perceived wisdom?

For a while. From Be Here Now to Don't Believe The Truth it was getting progressively more difficult. But this one was a bit of a breeze. We were working in London. We were going home every night. Our producer had this idea to make this kind of psychedelic, monotonous drone-rock album. We went along with it. It was just what we needed at our age, for somebody to say, 'Why don't you go away and wrote some songs like this'. We were like, 'OK'. Whereas usually we'd be flicking through CDs going, 'What about that one? We could do something with that one'. The previous one, Don't Believe The Truth, was a nightmare, an absolute nightmare.

Are you saying you needed somebody to say no?

No. It's nothing to do with that. I would assume control of most things. Halfway through Don't Believe The Truth I realised that I can only do one thing with Oasis, that's make it sound like it's sounded for 10 years. Once I finally got it in my head that I was going to let it go and let someone else do it, it was very liberating for me in a way.

The best Oasis songs have always been the ones that were quick to write. What were the 10 minute jobs on Dig Out Your Soul?

Shock Of The Lightening and Falling Down. We had a weekend off and my missus went up to Scotland with my little lad. I wrote the pair of them, one on a Saturday night and one on a Sunday night. The Importance Of Being Idle was pretty quick as well actually. Saying that though, I remember Rock 'n' Roll Star taking forever to write. Nine times out of 10 a quick song will be great and one that takes a week or two will be rubbish.

You said you were a fan who writes songs. Critics say you've plagiarised other people's music. As a songwriter is there a line you have to draw?

I'll lay it down on the line for you. What I actually do is I sit and listen to Beatles' records and I play along with them and then I gradually take the most obvious components of their songs, take them out and just put some of my own words in and hey presto, we've got a song. Of course not. I don't sit and listen, play along with them them and go, if I'm listening to This Guy's In Love With You by Burt Bacharach, call it The Sky's In Love With You. Who would know?

Have you started sleepwalking?

I woke up one morning on a different floor of my house than the one I went to bed in. I wasn't drunk and I hadn't been out the night before. I can't remember getting there. Sarah came down and she said, 'Maybe you've started sleepwalking'. I was like, 'If I started sleepwalking at 41, life just keeps getting better and better. This is incredible'. Where would you end up? You could end up anywhere. I haven't done it since though.

There was a great story when you signed to Creation that you told them you had 50 songs written but you only had six. Did you have all those songs?

When we signed at the Sony offices we were saying, 'We could complete this six-album deal in three weeks'. And they were going, 'How many songs have you got'. And we started writing down all these songs and it got to about 11 and we stopped and we just started making up stupid titles.

Are there a lot of things you can't remember?

'94 to '98. None of us have any recollection of recording Morning Glory. I don't remember any of it. When we were coming up here Don't Look Back In Anger was on the radio. It only took 12 days to record so they're basically a bunch of demos. There was a massive fight in the middle of that so we had to abandon the studio for a few days. None of us had any cameras, no-one had any mobile phones, it hasn't been documented and there are no different versions.

Noel Gallagher was talking to Radio 1's Colin Murray.

Duffy Covers Oasis At The Manchester Apollo

It has been a remarkable year for Aimee Ann Duffy

From nowhere to No 1, the Bangor-born soul singer has managed to win over the UK with her soulish sound, quirky looks and unique vocals.

The cheers when she took the stage were breathtaking, and though she dances with all the grace of a Thunderbirds puppet, Manchester was charmed.

Her mannered vibrato on the likes of Rockferry, Rain On Your Parade and the ubiquitous Mercy had the Mancs roaring, and there was even a cover of Oasis classic Wonderwall as an encore.

Duffy’s bantering with the crowd occasionally fell short.

But it’s clear the slightly kooky blonde in the little dress is enjoying the spotlight.

Whatever 2009 might bring, these moments will remain precious ones.

Oasis: A Year On The Road Photography By Paul Slattery

February 1995 saw the band in what photographer Paul Slattery calls "cowboy country, where people drive around with shotguns on racks in the back of their pick-up trucks, and road signs are peppered with bullet holes".

This shot was taken onstage at the Academy in New York during the safer second leg of the North American tour, on March 8.

Tales From the Middle Of Nowhere

Just waking up in Monterey. What a day! The sun has go his hat on. Beautiful sunrise.

Nervously waiting on this very phone for updates on the score of the Manchester derby. Can't see us getting anything today. 0-0 would be perfectly acceptable.

Done a photo shoot yesterday in some shady neighbourhood. Wot's-iz-name shit himself from start to finish. He doesn't seem to like being out on the streets even if we're surrounded by 6 armed guards.

BOLLOCKS!! Little Spongebob Rooney's just scored. Typical clown-ish behaviour in the box apparently.

Now here's a thing. In Mexico right, the hombres who flog the bootleg t-shirts etc. have been selling Man Utd shirts with their shit badge and the Oasis logo side by side on the front and GALLAGHER and a big no. 10 on the back?! MAN UTD SHIRTS!!!! That's out-fuckin'-rageous.

The gig was great - give or take the odd freestyle cock up.

Half time. Shit-cunts - 1. City - 0.

Flying back to LA today. Gonna be based there for a week. Cue torrential rain, no doubt. Gotta go via Dallas international airport. Immigration officials haven't taken too kindly to me the last couple of times I've been in transit there - what with me being an evil genius'n'all. I'm steeling myself for a game of cat and mouse with whoever they send to deal with me this time.

My missus is waiting for me in California with my boy so it'll all be worthwhile.

Adios Mexico.

Hasta luego, and all that.

GD.

PS - The match finished 1-0 to the squares.

Weezer To Tour With Oasis

On the heels of the release of the second volume of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo's home recordings, the group is now taking a look back into its own vaults.

Cuomo tells Billboard he has "no idea" when the tentatively titled "Odds and Ends" will be released, but describes it as "just another fun project to do. They're great songs, but for some reason they didn't make the final cut for [a] record. They span a vast period of time from the very beginning of our career in the early '90s right up to the present day."

Meanwhile, Cuomo says Weezer may tour next spring with Oasis, and is hoping to enlist Spike Jonze to direct a video for the song "The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived" from its recent "The Red Album."

And while the next Weezer studio album appears to be a ways off, the group recently recorded six Christmas carols that will be downloadable for the iPhone game "Tap Tap Revenge," including "Oh Holy Night." Says Cuomo, "They're the classics."

In addition, Cuomo recently wrote a song with sibling pop duo Aly & AJ, although it's unclear when it may see the light of day. "It was such a blast to remember how teenagers approach songwriting," he says of the experience. "Their minds just work so fast and they have no fear and no ego."

Cuomo's "Alone II: The Home Recordings" was released earlier this week by DGC/Interscope. The first installment came out in December 2007.

For an extensive Q&A with Rivers Cuomo, visit Billboard.com later today.

Noel Gallagher's Back With Anger

You don’t slag off the Gallagher brothers and get away with it — as Mick Hucknall, Kaiser Chiefs and many more have found out over the years.

I told you on Saturday how Status Quo frontman Ffrancis Rossi accused the Mancs of not knowing the meaning of rock ‘n’ roll.

Francis reckoned Liam was miserable and looked “bored s***less” when on stage.

And now unimpressed Noel has responded with a few choice words of his own.

The Oasis axe lord said: “Normally I wouldn’t give a rat’s a******e what Status Quo have got to say about anything.

“But tell those ****s from me that when I go on stage at Wembley next summer, I won’t be wondering about what the poster boys for Help The Aged think.”

I reckon that’s 1-1.

Over to you, Francis.

Britney Spears Is Most Searched For Subject By British Web Users, Yahoo! Claims

Britney Spears is the UK's most searched-for subject on the internet, Yahoo! claims.

Interest in the troubled pop star propelled her to first place in the website's list of the top 10 searches for 2008.

Her profile seems only to have grown even as she became known more for her turbulent private life than her music.

She is now attempting a comeback as she releases her sixth studio album, called Circus.

The UK's other interests over the past year have been similarly showbiz-focused, with all top five positions filled by pop culture phenomena: the TV shows Big Brother and X Factor, the rock band Oasis, and Disney's multimedia hit High School Musical 3.

The enthusiasm for entertainment left the only news story in the top 10, the US election, in sixth place.

The real-life dramas of Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss also captured the public's imagination, but just one male celebrity featured in the list - the actor Heath Ledger, who died suddenly in January.

Oasis' inclusion in the list may be explained by the loyalty of their fans who spent much of this year looking forward to their seventh studio album, Dig Out Your Soul.

Kristof Fahy of Yahoo! Europe said: "It is fascinating to look back over the last year and see the stories, personalities and subjects that have captured our imagination, some of which are almost distant memories now, and some of which continue to be the hot topics of today."

:: The Yahoo! Top 10 Searches of 2008:

02. Big Brother
03. X Factor
04. Oasis
05. High School Musical 3
06. US election
07. Amy Winehouse

Liam Gallagher's Coldplay Hate

Liam Gallagher doesn't "give a s**t" about Coldplay.

Despite the worldwide popularity of Chris Martin's group, the rocker insists Oasis are still the best band on the planet and wipe the floor with their rivals.

He fumed: "I don't give a s**t about Coldplay. We are the coolest band and we are the best f***ing band. We are the most important band. We may not be the biggest band in America but who would want that?"

Liam admits he is confused as to why Oasis are not bigger in the US, because their Stateside tours sell-out in record time.

He added to Loaded magazine: "We aren't as big as we could be in America because of our attitudes. We're miserable. The main reason is they obviously don't like us. But a lot of people over there do like us. We sold out Madison Square Garden in a minute and we tour there for a long time. But they don't buy our records. But America is not the be all and end all for Oasis. America is a country in a f***ing very big world, so if they don't like us, somewhere else will."

Oasis' latest album, 'Dig Out Your Soul', reached number 5 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart when it was released in October.
