No Oasis, Kings Of Leon For Isle Of Wight

Isle Of Wight Festival boss John Giddings has quashed rumours that Oasis and Kings Of Leon will play the festival.

Speaking to NME.com the organiser said that the event is still in negotiations with its headline artists.

When asked if Oasis or Kings Of Leon will be playing he said: "It's definitely neither of those. I can honestly tell you it's neither.

"We're negotiating with the headliners for the Saturday and Sunday. They're definitely guitar bands."

U2 and Arctic Monkeys are the most likely candidates to join Friday night headliners The Prodigy on the bill.

Giddings also revealed who might be appearing at the festival. He said: "I was thinking about booking The Zombies," he said, because they did 'Odessey And Oracle'. They're amazing, because they have musicianship. You don't have bands like that any more."

Other acts already confirmed includes Basement Jaxx, Pendulum and The Ting Tings.

Noel Gallagher: I Was Almost A Blue

Rocker Noel Gallagher nearly joined his beloved Manchester City as a player – but his dreams were wrecked by a women’s clothes chain.

One-time chairman Francis Lee wanted to register the Oasis guitarist as a squad member and have the band’s name on the front of their shirts.

But the deal fell through when the group found they do not own the rights to the word Oasis.

The rights are owned by the High Street store of the same name selling women’s clothing.

Noel, 41, said: “An idea was concocted that I would sign as a player.

“I told them: ‘I’m not going to be registered as a City player and not play.’

“As it transpired, we don’t own the rights to any garment with Oasis on because the women’s clothes chain copyrighted the name long before we were formed.”

During the 1990s under Lee, 64, City were always on the lookout for ways of raising cash.

Today they are the richest club on the planet, owned by oil multi-billionaire Sheikh Mansour, 38.

Oasis are on the fourth leg of their world tour this week and we should feel blessed. Noel and Liam are a notorious live act. Noel: stalwart, bashing out classic chords like hits of lightning. Liam: one of the best vocalists since Elvis, sending out dead-eyed Botticelli stares into the audience, hunched over a microphone, swaggering and challenging crowds of up to 100,000 to a fight before leading into surreal, Breton-inspired stage banter.

Their August tour sold out in minutes, with thousands of people queueing for the possibility of spare tickets. And why? Because Oasis are the best rock'n'roll band in the world and they are an unstoppable live act. And so to celebrate, here are my top five live Oasis moments:

1) Earls Court, London, 1995
I witnessed this performance along with 20,000 other die-hard fans. Have they bettered this show? No. Earls Court was genius because Oasis were doing stadium performances on pure instinct. Earls Court was just after the release of Morning Glory. It was pure storming hedonism and it was one of the few moments where they truly captured the pop culture zeitgeist.

2) Maine Road, Manchester, 1996
This was rock as religious spectacle. Oasis don't necessarily have fans, they have disciples who chant their love for the band. There is a reason why their live DVD, There And Then, included the Maine Road and Earls Court performances, and that's because those shows captured a live rock'n'roll experience as essential as Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan and Daft Punk's Alive.

3) Loch Lomond, Scotland, 1996
Oasis played in front of 40,000 fans while a photographer caught the iconoclastic moment with Noel standing behind a Jagger-like Liam. An amazing shot! Noel's studies of U2's Rattle and Hum paid off. Fun fact: Oasis (bar Liam) loved U2 and if I had known this in 1994 I would never have signed them. At the time, Bobby Gillespie and myself were obsessed with U2 being the enemies of rock'n'roll due to the commercial gloss of Bono and co. Of course, I get U2 now and they always got Creation Records – Achtung Baby being 50% Primals, 25% the Jesus and Mary Chain and 25% My Bloody Valentine.



4) Aberdeen, Scotland, 1997
I'll admit the Be Here Now tour was when Oasis lost their rock'n'roll mojo. Not every date on this tour was a highlight, but Oasis were on fire in Aberdeen. It was completely mental, unrestrained, rebellious rock'n'roll. Oasis became a gargantuan juggernaut of electric feedback and primal beats.

5) The Word, London, 1994
I was languishing in drug rehab and watching Oasis on The Word playing Supersonic. I thought '"What have I unearthed?" and then "Yes, this is going to be massive". And guess what? They are.

Nearly 15 years on, I have fashion hipsters telling me about the latest Shoreditch sensation, while simultaneously putting down Oasis. Granted, east London bands talk a good album, but Oasis have never stopped making great albums. Let's be honest, Oasis are our Stones, our Beatles and – yes – our U2. Buying an Oasis record is the closest you will get to reliving those classic bands, so you might as well embrace it.

However the times that they do work they show songs in a new light, and in some cases surpass the originals. We've searched around for the best 10 that you have to introduce your ipod to immediately.

Party Ben: Boulevard of Broken Songs

This challenged the usual mashup make up by mashing four songs instead of traditional two taking elements of Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Oasis' Wonderwall, Travis' Writing to Reach You and Eminem's Sing for the Moment. One of the better known mash-ups this has had received worldwide attention. Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is said to be a fan, and if it's good enough for him , it's definately good enough for us.

Gym Class Heroes Mash Up feat Fall Out Boy

Who exactly is responsible for this we're not quite sure but it's being doing the rounds online for a while now. Taking it's chorus from Gym Class Heroes' Make Out Club and jamming it with the music and chorus of Fall Out Boy's Grand Theft Autumn, this track is pure genius. Patrick Stump's lushcious vocal's mixed with GCH's Travis' rapping abilities make for a hell of a track.

Freelance Hellraiser: Smells Like Teen Booty (Nirvana Vs Destiny's Child)

This one comes courtesy of The Freelance Hellraiser who is one of the most respected creators of the UK bootleg scene. There's no denying that Bootylicious was a blinder of a track on it's own, but take away the music and replace it with Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit and it only gets better. Don't believe us? check it out, we guarantee you'll be hooked.

Party Ben: Dontcha wish Your Seether was a Freak Like Me (Pussycat Dolls vs Veruca Salt)

The San Francisco DJ, is responible for some of the better mash ups on the web, this one being the best of all. This track is the rock makeover the Pussycat Dolls have always needed. The rocky rifts of Veruca Salt's Seether compliment the catchiness of Don't Cha. It's a great take on a dancefloor classic.

Beats International: Dub be good to me

The classic mash-up; and it still remains to be one of the best. Back in the day before downloading made mash-ups and bootlegs popular, this track was ripping up dancefloors. When Norman Cook's electronic band took on SOS' Just be Good to Me by covering the track, they quite brilliantly threw, The Clash's Guns of Brixton into the song and came up with possibly the best mash up of all time.

Scumbody Told Me: Arctic Monkeys' Vs Killers'

When the Sun Goes Down and Somebody Told me shouldn't be songs that compliment each other. One is about prostitues sung by a bunch of northern lads, the other is a song about men looking like ladies sang by flamboyant Americans. Oddly though they sound like they were meant to be combined and now whenever I hear the intro to When the Sun Goes Down and it doesn' launch into the Killers I'm a little disappointed.

Rebel DJs: Standing in the way of a Connection (The Gossip Vs Elastica)

I love The Gossip's Standing in the Way of Control, no matter how many times, or how many versions of the song I hear, I can't get enough. The Rebel DJ's mix takes the catchy tune of Elastica's Connection and throws Beth Ditto's vocals on top, and we like the results.

Divide and Create: Illiterate City (Guns and Roses vs Jackson 5)

You will never ever look at A,B,C the same way again after hearing this version, in fact the Jackson 5's original sound dull in comparison. Sped up to match the beats of Paradise City it sounds like the chords are meant for Mini Micheal and co.

Oasis, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie Memorabilia Exhibition Details Announced

An exhibition featuring memorabilia including one of Amy Winehouse's dresses, one of Noel Gallagher's guitars and the clown suit worn by David Bowie in the 1980 'Ashes To Ashes' video is set to open next month.

The British Music Experience will open its doors at the O2 complex in London's North Greenwich on March 9.

As well as the memorabilia, another feature will be the Gibson Interactive Studio – an area in which customers can take part in guitar tuition programmes.

The permanent exhibition, which will be housed in a 22,000-foot space, will feature further interactive music attractions alongside the memorabilia and guitar programmes.

I Swapped The Gallaghers For Winchcombe

It's true, he rocked around the world with Spandau Ballet and Oasis, but a Gloucestershire man finds life in Winchcombe just as Wonderwall.

Iain Robertson, who runs the Little Letting Shop in Vineyard Street with his wife Andrea, spent more than a decade touring with some of the biggest bands.

But the 48-year-old, who lives in Greet, says he has struck gold living in the county.

"I first came to the Cotwolds after bringing Spandau Ballet to learn to ride horses in Stanton. There used to be both Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and their whole entourages at the bar in the Mount Inn," he said.

"It's a beautiful place and a wonderful place to live."

His first foray into the showbiz lifestyle was while he was in the Army.

"I was in the Parachute Regiment and a friend's brother was pushing boxes in Birmingham for a little band called Duran Duran," he said.

"He called saying it was exploding and it was out of control, and they asked me to help as well."

Even though Iain didn't get a full time gig with Duran Duran, he soon found himself working as head of security for 80s rivals Spandau Ballet, famous for songs True and Gold.

He said: "It was crazy. It's fair to say we were all living the rock and roll lifestyle. I certainly learned how to open a bottle of champagne."

Over the next 10 years Iain managed tours for the Sisters of Mercy, Roberta Flack, John Lee Hooker and Oasis

He said: "I went all over the world. My favourite band was Sisters of Mercy because Andrew Eldritch the leader was a really interesting guy and they were huge in great places like Argentina and Brazil. They were just cool places to be cool."

But he also had a few kind words to say about the Gallagher brothers – and he wrote a book about the band.

He said: "Noel Gallagher was a very sharp, really talented guy and Liam was everything you'd expect him to be."

But in the late 1990s Iain decided he couldn't live forever on the road and being away from Andrea and their son Conor, now 10.

He said: "The bands stay young, but I was getting older and they say if the band is too loud, you're too old."

Iain now runs his own promotions company Karmacom and works with Andrea at the Little Lettings Company.
He says he doesn't look back in anger, or have any regrets about his years of touring.

Iain said: "I don't miss it as much as you'd think. There was great value in putting on a concert, and now there's a value in helping people find a home, we're now showing places to a couple, who had to leave Zimbabwe with nothing."

He added: "I was once asked if I had any fun on the road. I told the man that if he had to ask me, then I probably had his share as well as mine."

Director reveals 'scandalous princess' story behind clip for new single 'Falling Down'

Oasis' video for their new single sees the band snubbing a drug-taking, serial shagging royal character, director Wiz has told the NME.

The monarchy-mocking video for 'Falling Down', which also intersperses real footage of Prince Charles, is based on the double life of a would-be modern-day royal.

"The band were totally into it, Wiz explained. "I don't know where it came from but I just had this idea of using 'Falling Down''s lyrics as metaphor for a contemporary Princess Margaret - a sister of Harry and William maybe. A tragic figure who's never going to be crowned and only exists to smile at the right time. She's searching for meaning but ends up in this drug oblivion, out of her mind."

The royal figure is seen engaging in one-night stands and waking up in drug dens, before coming face-to-face with Oasis at a gala event. "It's aristocracy meets meritocracy, as I said to Noel," the director recalled.

"There's some other entertainers there - vague references to the Sugababes and that lot. But the reason Oasis are there is to meet someone else, a hero of theirs - sort of a Tim Burton-type figure, or Burt Bacharach maybe. They end up being the only people to snub the princess, and that's the straw that breaks the camel's back."

The director said he didn't have much trouble convincing the band to get their respective roles. "When we were filming, I said to Liam: 'I don't want you to react to the princess, just stare her out,' and he said: 'No problem mate my professional job is to f**king stare people out!"

Petition To Release Unbroadcast Oasis Tracks From Rehearsal Gig

A petition has appeared online to ask Oasis to upload the tracks that have yet to be broadcast from the tour rehearsal at Black Island Studios, London last year.

The tracks from the gig attended by 150 lucky Oasis fans are Morning Glory, Lyla, The Masterplan, Wonderwall and My Big Mouth have yet not been brodcast.

Noel Gallagher Asks Jose Mourinho To Consider Managing Manchester City

Noel Gallagher spoke to Portuguese radio station RFM earlier this week, ahead of Oasis' stop in Lisbon on February 15th.

In an interview with RFM, Noel spoke about Manchester City, Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo and his admiration for Jose Mourinho.

Noel said "I love him, I think we really miss him in England, I think he's a fantastic, manager and a fantastic personality. I think he talks total common sense , when he speaks about football. I would love to meet him."

The interviewer informed Noel that he is a listener to the show, Noel sent him a personal message on air.

"Mr Mourinho if you are indeed listening to this, this is Noel Gallagher from Oasis. I have been a lifetime Manchester City supporter, and there are rumours in the press you may be coming back to England.

Can I just ask you would you please consider coming to Man City and managing us for the next five years it would be a absolute honour if you could do that and take care and I love you."

On This Day In Oasis History

"Go Let It Out" is a song by English rock band Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher.

It was released on February 7th 2000 as the first single from the fourth studio album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. The song peaked at #1 in the UK charts where it went Silver.

The lyrics are a similar vein to "Roll With It" in that it encourages the listener to get on with their life without being specific about how this is to be achieved. The song samples the drums from Johnny Jenkins' version of Dr John's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters". The title may be a reference to the line in "Hey Jude" by The Beatles, "So let it out and let it in, hey, Jude, begin". Noel described the song as "the closest we came to sounding like a modern day Beatles" in the 'Lock the Box' interview found on the DVD in the special edition of Stop the Clocks.

The song, along with B-side "(As Long As They've Got) Cigarettes in Hell", also embodies the psychedelic feel which the band experimented with on the album. It couples this with an acoustic guitar chord sequence. "Let's All Make Believe", the second B-Side is considered by many to be one of the best Oasis B-sides. Some people believe the lyrics of this song to relate to the cracks that began forming in the group at the time (see below), for example: "So let's all make believe/that we're still friends and we like each other."

Due to the departure of guitarist Bonehead and bassist Guigsy in the early recording sessions for Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, the track features only Liam Gallagher (vocals), Noel Gallagher (rhythm guitar, bass guitar, lead guitar) and Alan White (drums).

Oasis were looking for replacements for founding members Bonehead and Guigsy and while Bonehead was quickly replaced with fellow Creation signing and former Heavy Stereo frontman Gem Archer, Guigsy proved harder to replace. Thus the trippy video for "Go Let It Out" had to be filmed with Noel on bass, Archer in Noel's role as lead guitarist and Liam in Archer's role as rhythm guitarist.



The b-side "Let's All Make Believe" has recently been included in several lists as a 'hidden gem', such as Q magazine placing it at number one on its list of '500 best lost tracks' and at 4 on its 'list of songs to download this month - January 2006.' Q magazine said in the description 'If Standing on the Shoulder of Giants had contained this track, it would have probably got another star'.

In the "lock the box" interview, Noel considers "Go Let It Out" to be "head and shoulders" above any other songs he had written during this time, and its "up there with some of the best things I've ever done."

"Go Let It Out" is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks, and is the only song from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants on that album.

Falling Down - All The Details..

Oasis have confirmed the formats and extra tracks on their forthcoming single ‘Falling Down’.

The brand new Noel Gallagher-penned song 'Those Swollen Hand Blues' features in addition to various remixes of the single.

The Prodigy have twisted the track into new sonic forms whilst Marilyn Manson bassist Twiggy and Dave Sardy, who previously collaborated on a remix of 'I'm Outta Time', have created a new dance-floor filler!

Readers of Noel's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' will also be aware of the remix by Amorphous Androgynous who have delivered a 22 minute epic version of ‘Falling Down’. In a recent entry, Noel described it as, ‘A staggering piece of music. Monumental even. All superlatives will apply”.

The single is released in the UK on Monday 9th March (8th March digitally) and is taken from the band's number one album, 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

Oasis' BRITs Snub

Oasis haven't been invited to this year's BRIT Awards, Noel Gallagher has revealed.

Guitarist Noel Gallagher has revealed the band - who were awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at the 2007 ceremony - are yet to receive their tickets to this month's ceremony.

He told Absolute Radio: "We won't be going. Because we're not on a major record label anymore and we run our own ship we don't get invited to those kind of things anymore. It's fair enough, we don't mind."

Although Oasis won't be attending, Noel is delighted U2 will be opening the event - which takes place on February 18 in London - with their new single 'Get On Your Boots'.

However, the 'Falling Down' rocker admits his bandmates - brother Liam Gallagher, guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell - and friends in the music business don't share his love for the Irish group.

He added: "I am a fan and I wouldn't think that they could do a great deal wrong in my eyes. Well I have to say, much to the disgust of everybody else that I know in the music business, I'm actually a fan of U2. No one else I know likes them, but I do, I love them."

Kanye West 'New Oasis Video Breaks My Heart'

Kanye West has blogged about Oasis' video for new single 'Falling Down'.

The rapper posted a link to the video, which you can watch above, on his official blog under the title "Sometimes I see videos and it breaks my heart that there are so few outlets for vids these days..."

The video mocks the British monarchy, and features a member of the royal family indulging in drug binges and one-night stands.

Director Wiz told NME.COM that the lead actress in the video is playing the role of "a contemporary Princess Margaret - a sister of William and Harry maybe".

West's endorsement of the video drew a number of blog comments from fans, mostly positive.
