Liam Gallagher: 'I Have No Problem With Noel'

The singer denies the splitting rumors and talks about the essence of the band, and the future. Also, he gives details about his fanaticism for John Lennon and his legendary fights with his brother Noel. And talks about his composition method and rock through time. Oasis will play at River tomorrow.

Over the phone, Liam Gallagher speaks his mind with short and assertive sentences, typical of someone who holds strong convictions. He has his reasons. His band, Oasis, has fifteen years of career in the slippery English scene, and the internal chemistry of the group -more than once questioned due to the public friction between the singer and his older brother, Noel- seems to have reached a balance of powers.

Beyond this, their latest album Dig Out Your Soul marked the rebirth of the classic Oasis: a powerful and strong rock, tinged with psychedelic touches and ballads. Part of the varied stylistic nuance of Dig Out Your Soul is about the compositional role singer Liam acquired in recently.

You have a distinctive voice as a singer. When do you feel you found your own voice as a composer?

I think the first time I wrote songs that I felt comfortable with was in the days when we were recording Standing on the Shoulders of Giants. I had just met my new wife and I wrote Songbird, which ended in Heathen Chemistry. I liked that song. As for my role as a singer, I always felt comfortable with my voice, I feel that it's distinctive, especially when I sing my own songs. There are days when I notice it a bit battered, but, well, that's life.

Surely part of the show in Argentina will be filled with "Dig Out Your Soul". What can you tell us about the album and especially about your contributions?

I like the album, especially the sound. We recorded it at Abbey Road, so you can't make a shitty album in such a studio! As for my contribution in terms of songs, I am particularly happy with I'm Outta Time. I also like how Soldier on turned out. Ain't Got Nothin could have had longer lyrics, but we had to finish the melody because we had it around for a long time, so... In summary I am very happy with what we did.

Do you have any specific method when you sat down to write a song?

I usually start playing the guitar at home. Especially when I'm bored and there's nothing on TV. I admit I'm good with melodies, I always have a few floating around in my head. I know I'm good doing it, perhaps I'm best in the world on that, but I'm not very good with words. I can say everything I wanna say in the first verse and then I got stuck there. And I say to myself: "Now what?". But things are moving forward. I think the most important thing in my case is to be patient. Ultimately, if I can't do a song, I don't panic: I'm a singer first and foremost.

One time you said you were tired of people who follow you and harass you, as if they couldn't do something important with their lives and they need an idol. Who's fault is it that people don't have their own light? The society, the media, the government?

Themselves! They are to blame. There are sheep and shepherds. And we can not all be pastors. I don't mind people asking me for an autograph or a picture with them, is part of what I do. Maybe when I said that I was in a bad mood. So everything is well with my fans, I have time for them. Everyone needs guidance at some point in their lives. It happened to me when I saw the Stone Roses: they lit my mind. What you can't do is follow someone all the time.

Many consider rock as music for young people, but several legends are still around in their sixties.

Rock and roll doesn't have age, man. I tell you more. There are plenty of old rockers bands that will wipe any of these youngsters. And we are one of them! And also I don't consider myself old.

When you look at the history of rock, there's always a moment of epiphany when you feel like they have "arrived", so to speak. It happened to The Beatles with the Royal Command Performance. When do you feel it has happened to Oasis, that moment when you say "we made it"?

I don't think we made it yet. We have a long way to go. We haven't even scratched all the good we can be yet. We can still be a hundred times better than we are today.

What is your favorite Oasis album?

Probably Definitely Maybe, because it was the first album we did and everything was new to us, but I must say that I enjoyed making all of the albums and there's not a single Oasis song that I don't like.

Your admiration for John Lennon is no secret. What do you think his legacy was as a musician and as a human being with social conscience?

First of all I was impressed by his voice and his songs. I never met him in person, so I don't know how he really was, but all his fight for world peace seems cool. I have the feeling he was a good guy. Also, if you upset him, he would let you know. I think he was an honest guy.

Do you think rock music and its lyrics can still affect the world in a positive way?

I think music, in general, is powerful. Wether it's pop, rock, dance. But the world must want to change. Music can play its role, but I think that 90% of the whole world gives a fuck. And maybe 70% of people are never consulted about the things that have to do with their lives. There are a few morons who decide everything.

Oasis has done Beatles covers, like "Helter Skelter," "I Am the Walrus" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." If you ever decide to make an album of your favorite groups. Which artists and songs would be included?

Across the Universe ... I love that song. Let me think. Any song by the Stone Roses, a great band. Any song by the Beatles, the Who, the Kinks. And I don't want to forget How Does It Feel, by Slade.

The media have created an issue about your fights with your brother Noel. Beyond all that, you must be proud that the name Gallagher is associated with one of the greatest rock bands in history.

Without a doubt. I have no problem with Noel. And if I had one, I would go and say it to him. What happens is that when he gets angry at me, he goes and encourages the press and that's what drives me crazy; it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I think the same thing happens to the fans of the band. So far I took it quietly, but everything has a limit. So, from now on, if he provokes me...

You have a considerable legion of fans in Argentina. Any message for them before the show in River Plate?

The message is simple. I love you and look forward to see you all. Get ready to go crazy!

Oasis: Five Questions To Gem Archer

Before their show in River, the band's guitarist speaks. Plus, everything you need to know before their fourth concert in Buenos Aires.

Prior to joining Oasis, Gem Archer had his shining hour as a head of Heavy Stereo, a band that joined the second line during the 90's Brit pop. And he also worked with Paul Weller, his adolescence hero.

Before River, five questions to the guitarist that goes side by side Noel Gallagher in Oasis.

This will be your third visit to Buenos Aires with Oasis. Do you confirm or do you deny the legend of the public's passion in this part of the world?

People are crazy in Latin America. We know we have awakened something big there, and the feeling is mutual as we love playing for you. I don't know what they put in their drinks, but something generates between the audience and the band that is hard to explain if you don't live it.

What you can tell me about your collaborations with Paul Weller?

I grew up listening to The Jam: it was my adolescence band and I am convinced that Paul Weller is one of the greatest. Only being by his side inspires you and frees you to give the best of yourself. And the best part is that he's always changing direction, trying new things, he never stays still, and he's fifty years-old. He is the only guy that can be admired by two people as different as Noel Gallagher and Robert Wyatt.

When you listen to music, what format do you prefer: vinyl, CD or MP3?

Every time I'm at home I listen to vinyl, the sound is insuperable. For example, today I had a very spiritual and soulful morning with Reverend Al Green and Ray Charles, and their voices in vinyl are top.

The British press usually boost an artist as soon as they release an album, and then they abandon them. What do think about it?

The press, and even more the English one, always boost an artist, mainly because that's their job, they always worked that way. ¿Are you telling me a band like Good Charlotte is as good as they say? If at least they'd boost someone like Jimi Hendrix! (laughs)

What's true about Noel's statements on Oasis stopping for five years?

I haven't talk to Noel about that subject. Please note that the source is The Sun, so you always should doubt about it. But what I do can say is that we are in a time of the tour in which we feel like stopping, missing the kids and all that.

Pisco Supernova: Oasis Comes To Lima

It was a sea of glowing cell phone screens and cameras when Oasis took the stage at the Estadio National in Lima last night. From the dark stage, flashes of white light suddenly illuminated the 40,000-strong crowd packed together in the stadium's center and up in the seats. Heads, arms and hands turned golden with light as everyone tried to capture the moment. The screaming and whistling from the audience swelled as the band broke into “Rock n' Roll Star” the first track from their 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe. Oasis was really here.

The Oasis frenzy had been building for days. Driving by the stadium yesterday afternoon, a good five hours before the concert began, I saw hundreds of people already lined up outside the gate. Two days ago, a mob of Limeñans met the band at Jorge Chávez Airport. Some of them wore face masks to protect against Swine Flu (although no cases have yet been confirmed in Peru), but no disease was going to prevent them from seeing their idols. The reception prompted singer Liam Gallagher to Twitter: “Just landed in Peru, my kinda people...”

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from an Oasis concert. I certainly knew much of band's music from their first two classic albums Definitely Maybe and What's the Story (Morning Glory). Musically, the the band had dropped off my radar for some time, and I'd kept abreast of Oasis news mainly through tabloid headlines of the Gallagher brothers' very public bad blood. I doubt I was the only one who was slightly relived to even see Noel and Liam on stage together (the brothers arrived in Lima days ago on separate flights from Caracas).

But on stage, there was no sign of conflict between the brothers. Then again, I didn't see them look at each other for the duration of show. Liam, with short-cropped hair and clad in what looked like a navy blue prison jump suit, attacked the microphone as he sang, hands clasped behind his back. Noel Gallagher stood off to stage right strumming a variety of Gibson guitars and joining in on harmonies. Bassist Andy Bell, guitarist Gem Archer and drummer Chris Shamrock largely stayed put, out of the spotlight.

It may have been the band's lack of chemistry on stage or Liam's bristling attempts at audience banter: “So, is Peru going to the next World Cup? No? I thought so,” but Oasis didn't seem as excited to see Peru as Peru was to see Oasis.

In fact, the only true moment of pleasure from the band that I could discern occurred when when Noel emerged alone and began strumming the chords for “Don't Look Back in Anger.” He sang the verses and the crowd sang the choruses, which brought a satisfied smile to his face that we could see on the Jumbotron. In an utterly foreign country, to hear the sound of tens of thousands of strangers singing your song must be a good feeling.

And, in the end, the ability to sing along to your favorite songs counts for a lot. The band played a nice mix of old and new material, with classics like “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova” and “Supersonic” invariably getting the biggest audience response. The versions we heard on stage sounded by and large exactly as they sound on the recordings – same guitar riffs, same vocal inflections. It was easy to sing along, and that is definitely what the crowd did.

The band abruptly finished its set, with a few words of goodbye and no encore at all, bewildering most of the crowd, which was screaming for more. The band had just finished a great cover version of the Beatles' “I am the Walrus,” and the crowd hadn't missed a beat, adding collective “Woos!” with raised fists every time Liam sang, “I am the Eggman!”

But however much the crowd clamored for more, all we saw were roadies breaking down the stage and carrying off the instruments. The crowd didn't know what to do. “Is that it?” someone standing next to me asked out loud. Judging by the smiles I saw all around me though, it seemed likely that the band's hour-plus set was already more than enough.

Oasis Caught Up In Pig Flu Alert

Oasis are holed up in a hotel in Venezuela sheltering from the threat of swine flu.

Liam and Noel Gallagher have been stuck indoors for a couple of days, only venturing out wearing surgical masks to protect their prized lungs from the potentially fatal virus.

They did manage to play a gig in capital Caracas — but management have ordered the band, made up of Gem Archer and Andy Bell, to stay out of harm’s way.

Not something that comes easily to the Manc hellraisers.

Liam joked: “In Caracas, top gig. Sat in me room in silence as my TV doesn’t work. Not allowed to leave the hotel for fear of being tickled to death.”

And Noel blogged: “Ain’t got that pig flu yet, by the way. Give it time, though.”

Cracking

All that extra thinking time has sparked a cracking money-spinning plan in the rapier-like business mind of guitarist Noel.

He is keen to add to the band’s merchandise by having Oasis face masks made with the band’s logo and “MCFC” printed on the front for their beloved Manchester City.

My computer whizkids have shown how Some Might Say singer Liam and bruv Noel would look wearing the masks.

A source said: “Noel thinks the surgical face masks look amazing.

“He has been joking that he feels like a James Bond baddie. He’s keeping his for the summer gigs back in the UK.

“He has even had a laugh with pals that Michael Jackson was on to something by being the first to wear one.”

On a more serious note, Oasis haven’t had much luck across the Pond over the years.

Noel said in a Q magazine interview that the band could have been bigger than The Beatles in America, but Liam threw their big chance away by being a yob.

Now swine flu is threatening to derail their latest overseas adventure.

Liam is determined to make sure the band are here for the long term though.

He was fighting back yesterday after Noel’s comments about how they would be five years older before their next album came out.

Speaking from the comfort of his hotel suite he said: “It won’t be a five-year break if I’ve got anything to do with it.”

Just make sure you survive the virus floating about South America first, Liam.

Get some oinkment for your chest.

Taken from Noel's tour diary for oasisinet.com

Baba-do-baah!..POW! That gig was pretty good. Considering we ain't played for 2 weeks it was really good.

Crowd was a bit weird. Very calm. Underwhelmed even. I'm assured that's good though.

What to tell...? Nothing really. Flying to Peru today. I've never been. Have you? What's it like? Are there Irish bars? Surely there must be?

Rest of the boys are leaving early. I'm staying here for the day. Got special permission to watch the Man-U-V-The-Arsenal. Can't wait.

Ain't got that pig flu yet, by the way. Give it time though.

In a bit.

Hundreds Of Fans Welcome Oasis' Arrival In Lima

Hundreds of Oasis' Peruvian fans gathered at Lima's Airport, wearing t-shirts and carrying banners , to welcome the band, which arrived in Lima after performing in Caracas.

Many of the fans were wearing surgical masks, since the media had previously reported the first confirmed swine flu case in Lima (in an Argentinian traveller).

Most of the fans said that they were not afraid of becoming infected, and that welcoming their idols (and expressing their admiration for Oasis' music) was way more important.

It was Liam Gallagher the one who gave a quick wave hi to the fans. However, not any other member of the band declared to the media nor greeted anyone else.

Oasis will perform tonight at the National Stadium of Lima, in a concert that has reportedly sold 40,000 tickets up to now.

Are Oasis The Real Deal For Argentinians?

After a ten year tight relationship with their local fans the Gallaghers are after the major prize: to fill River Plate stadium, Buenos Aires..

Are Oasis really a popular passion in Argentina or just one more band in the marketing gear of a global entertainment industry? Next Sunday, the Gallagher brothers will go for their biggest bragging act in this land: in their fourth visit to Buenos Aires in ten years, they will try to fill River Plate stadium and thus crown themselves with the title of "distinguished guests" as other long running artists did, including The Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, The Police and The Ramones.

Did UK's largest British rock group of the last fifteen years finally manage to have their songs win over the Argentines on a massive scale as they did in the New World where they sold over 50 million copies of their albums? The posters around Buenos Aires announcing their concert at River appear to respond with a resounding yes to the question. Much more if one takes into account the special relationship that brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have built with the country for a decade, an ant's work (and strategic marketing) which took them on visit after visit to horizons beyond their own call: two Luna Park shows for a total of 10,000 people in 1998, a show at the Campo Argentino de Polo in 2001 to 20,000 young people, as part of a festival with international artists, and at the same place, but with Oasis as the sole headliner of the day, before 40,000 fans in 2006.

By then, the popularity of the band in Argentina drew Q magazine's special attention , one of the most important in British scene, and together they traveled with a reporter and a photographer to cover "the Oasis phenomenon" including a photo shoot in the neighborhood of La Boca .

"It is hard to explain the Oasis phenomenon unless you see it by yourself. I can't speak for the Q journalist who traveled with us to Buenos Aires, but I think he was pleasantly surprised by what he encountered in those days," Noel told La Nacion in October 2006. "Argentina is a special place for us and there are few cities in the world which are similar to Buenos Aires, maybe some Italian, not much more: the public is totally crazy and loves football as much as we do," he concluded.

Alarm or promotion?

When the band announced on their MySpace that they would perform in the country one month ago, this time, in their words, " at the iconic and largest football stadium in Argentina, where the 1978 World Cup took place", many thought the stakes were dealt to high in the Gallaghers' hands.

To make matters worse, last week's alarming : "Tickets for the concert are not being sold yet as we expected," was rumored to be heard in the corridors of local promoters. A day later, Mario Pergolini echoed information of dubious provenance in his radio program Cual Es? and fired with sensationalism: "The show in Buenos Aires will be Oasis' last."

The news wires followed with the brother's usual phrases: that they no longer speak; Liam never knew Noel's 19 months old son; the band will take a break; and more and more and more.

Up until yesterday about 40,000 tickets for the show on Sunday were sold and no one predicts anything but a success.

Promotional strategy involving rock band split ups is nothing new and has been around since the Rolling Stones , but the Gallaghers took it a step further with visceral fights which sometimes ended up in cuffs while still riding the marketing wave: "When the record company released the greatest hits album in 2006, the Sony people thought it might be a good idea to announce that we were splitting, but I swear we didn't have anything to do," said Noel a couple of years ago.

By mere brutal honesty or precisely calculated plan, the fact is that Oasis did a good job in the south of America during the last decade. They first came to the country in 1998 at one of the highest points of their career (just published their third album, Be Here Now, the successor of super successful Definitely Maybe and (What's The Story) Morning Glory?)

They repeated the experience three years later, when they shared the bill with their idol Neil Young to promote their album "Don't Believe The Truth" (sic); in their last visit not only did they put on a show for 40,000 fans, but they also devoted an entire day to signing autographs in Musimundo (something unthinkable for a couple of grumpy folks like the Gallaghers) and in these ten years granted dozens of interviews for Argentine media every time they released a new album or announced a return visit.

This time Noel promised to speak with La Nacion face to face hours before the show on Sunday.

So, are the Gallaghers popular in Argentine or just pretend to be? Most likely, on Sunday, there will be a new name to add to the exclusive list of artists who filled the Nuñez's stadium's to capacity and Oasis will have won over one more country in that game they vowed to win when they first stepped on stage to conquer the world.

Noel Gallagher CD Helped Boost Sunday Times Circulation

LONDON - The Sunday Times Rich List, published last weekend, prompted a circulation spike of 140,000 copies, according to newspaper estimates.

The annual supplement free with The Sunday Times on 26 April is believed to have helped the market-leading quality title achieve a circulation in excess of 1.3 million.

Though the figure is not officially audited, sources claim it topped the previous week's issue that recorded an estimated circulation of 1,175,000 copies.

However, it is believed The Sunday Times' biggest circulation spike this year came courtesy of the Noel Gallagher CD giveaway, in March, which added 170,000 to its circulation.

The personal fortunes of the UK's wealthiest media moguls have been slashed by more than £3bn, according to the Rich List.

In recent years, The Sunday Times has switched emphasis away from promotions to retaining loyal readers, promoting its subscription services, although it still uses giveaways as a marketing tool.
