Oasis Cover Art: Win Prints And Come To The Exhibition Party

Sarah Tierney has news of a Confidential readers' evening at Richard Goodall gallery where Michael Spencer Jones' iconic images of Oasis are on display.

Wandering around this exhibition of Oasis cover art, you're struck by a strong sense of familiarity. From the shot of Liam lying prostrate on Bonehead's living room floor on the cover of Definitely Maybe, to the semi-submerged Rolls Royce on Be Here Now, Michael Spencer Jones's photographs are a visual shorthand for the mid 1990s. If you had to pick an image that sums up Britpop – that optimistic era when we liked our political leaders as much as we liked our pop stars, chances are, it'd be one of these.

Michael Spencer Jones worked with Oasis from 1993 to 1998 when the band's influence was at its height. He remembers it as an exciting but pressurised time; “Coming up with a great image that the band were happy with and you were happy with was the most challenging thing,” he says. “You're working under pressure to create an image that you know is going to be around for a long time.”

It's difficult to say whether the images on display at the Richard Goodall Gallery have stayed in the collective consciousness because they were so widely seen in the 1990s, or because they have a power in their own right, outside of the music that came with them. It's probably a bit of both. Spencer Jones mixed elements of surrealism with the classic iconography of rock'n'roll: guitars, cars, champagne and girls, to create a style that was distinctly and recognisably 'Oasis'. The ultimate rock band with a bit of humour and cultural referencing thrown in.

He says his favourite image is the cover from Definitely Maybe but he also likes Be Here Now. If there was ever a cover image that asked to be analysed by over-attentive fans, it's this one. It's full of visual symbols: clocks, telescopes, gramophones, telephone boxes...with the band looking equally incongruous amongst it all. When a tabloid journalist smuggled his way onto the photo set and published a picture the next day, the papers pounced on the date on the calendar: 3 September – the day the second world war started.

Says Spencer Jones: “They were saying, what is this? Why are they making reference to the outbreak of the second world war? But that wasn't the case at all, it was just an arbitrary date that just happened to go on the calendar.”

It was actually Spencer Jones' guess at the date the album might be released. Noel had requested they have the release date on the cover, but at the time of the shoot, they weren't sure when it would be.

Other images seem designed to create a feeling rather than invite speculation on their meaning. For example the grainy black and white shot of a suburban house half hidden by overgrown trees on the sleeve of 'Live Forever', and the image of the Arizona desert on 'Whatever'.

It's a diverse collection on display, but what links all the images is their desirability to Oasis fans and music memorabilia collectors. With this in mind, Spellbound Publications have brought them together into a portfolio comprised of 10 original limited edition photographs of Oasis’ sleeve artwork, including Definitely Maybe, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, Be Here Now and seven of their single covers, plus a 198 page large format book called Out of the Blue – The Oasis Photographs. This includes photographs that Spencer Jones took of the band on tour, in the studio and off duty, and is a definitive pictorial record of the band during this era.

There's no doubt that Oasis fans will want to own this portfolio and book. It will also appeal to those who want to invest in artworks that they feel a particular connection to – after all, the Britpop kids are now all grown-up with money to spend.

Whether you're interested in investing or not, you're invited to come and see the artwork for yourself at a special readers' evening that Confidential is holding at the exhibition next Thursday (21 May). You'll be able to chat to Michael Spencer Jones about his photography and working with Oasis, and peruse the gallery with a complimentary glass of wine or beer. It's free and it'll be held at the Richard Goodall Gallery on High Street, near the Market Restaurant, in the Northern Quarter, from 6.30pm to 8pm.

We've also got five Oasis collages by Michael Spencer Jones to give away, worth £95 each. To be in with a chance of winning, fill out the form by clicking here and scrolling down (UK ONLY).

When Jose Met Jesus And More

Yesterday Noel made a comment on his tour diary about the Jesus Banner in the crowd at a recent show.

"Even The Shroud had a banner in the crowd. It was a cardboard cut-out of his hairy little head. Underneath was the legend, "JESUS". Simple. Beautiful".

Site visitor Jose's own words on what turned out to be a unforgettable day...

I'm so f***ing excited about Noel making a comment of our Jesus banner in his tour diary, that I couldn't help showing off these pictures.

Everyone loved the original I did for the River Plate concert, just loved it!

That's why I decided to make a copy of it to take to Brazil! But this time we wanted to take make the thing even funnier, so we made not one but three of banners saying: NOEL/GOD, LIAM/GOD, JAY/JESUS.

They were a hit! Before the show got started loads of people came up to us and took a picture with them, some guys from the Oasis stage crew spotted us in the crowd from the stage.

While we were holding them up in the air, they waved at us laughing and they also took a photo of us. During the show we spotted the banners on the giant screens on numerous occasions!

When they gig was finished, we went to the front barrier to see if we could get a set list, a lot of people were there for the same thing. But one of the crew who saw us from the stage brought us some set list sheets and took the Jesus banner with him.

After having a shower in our shitty hotel we stayed in, we all went to the band's hotel to see if we could meet them.

Chris and Jay were the first in arrive at the hotel, I asked Jay about his thoughts on the banner and he approved it, he is the most peaceful man I've ever met. Chris is like a little child, little funny fellow.

The next person to arrive was Gem, he was totally pissed, don't know what's going on with the man but he knows how to enjoy life.

The last one was Liam, he was taking a picture with some girls and when he saw me he said "nice hair cut man!" .

I got a picture with him, and he signed the set list and his god banner! he is the man!

Then, when they were leaving for the airport, I got my set list signed by the rest of the band! truly amazing!

Site visitor Pedro was also lucky to catch up with the band in Brazil.

I met with the band in Rio just before they got in the Hotel (Copacabana Palace - The Best Hotel in Rio by the way).

Liam came up to talk to the fans and took some pictures with them...he was very nice and very cool!!

Later that night I went to the bar in the hotel and I meet with every one of the band minus Noel.
They were all super cool and I stayed drinking with them until about 3am!!!

PS: Liam drunk is the funniest person in the world!!

Taken fron Noel's tour diary for oasisinet.com

Ahem. I take back all I said yesterday. About bring the mountain to Mohammed (are we still allowed to say that? I recall an incident with a teddy bear recently), so to speak. Last night's gig was incredible. I say gig, I'm not sure I heard any of it, but the night was amazing. Amazing. Amazing.

Even The Shroud had a banner in the crowd. It was a cardboard cut-out of his hairy little head. Underneath was the legend, "JESUS". Simple. Beautiful.

Had to scarper after the gig. Would have loved to have stayed and re-lived the 90s but the writing bug has gripped me. Nearly wrote 5 new songs on this leg alone! Gotta get them down while it's still happening.

Just waiting for breakfast. Phone Irie Nancy and that's me done. All packed and ready to leave.

I speak directly to you people of South America. You have been truly amazing. It's been a privilege to play for you. The memories of this little tour will live with me for a long time. Mucho gracias and obrigado.

Hasta luego.

GD.

Watch Jersey Budd Perform His Debut Single And A Great Cover Of Oasis Song Talk Tonight

Jersey Budd finally played at The Sun’s studios – after postponing his gig two weeks ago when he was in a car shunt.

But the hotly tipped singer — who is being described as the new Paul Weller — proved he was worth the wait with a cracking acoustic Biz session.

Jersey performed debut single Shotgun Times and a great cover of Oasis song Talk Tonight — the first track he ever learnt to play on the guitar.

He also revealed another reason behind his choice of song.

He said: “At a party after a Kasabian gig in December 2007, I went and sat on the toilet with a guitar, singing Talk Tonight, and Noel Gallagher was sat next to me on the bath. It was the most surreal moment of my life.

“I love Oasis. The best ever gig I’ve been to was seeing them at Maine Road in Manchester. Magic. Noel is a top geezer.”

This summer, Jersey hopes to finally get to Glastonbury after a failed attempt two years ago.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the festival season.

“I'm going to get to Glastonbury a week early this year to ensure I don't have another cock-up like the last time I tried to go.

"We got lost, stuck in traffic and ran over a black cat. Not a good day! I was gutted.”

Hopefully this Biz session will see the end of the star’s bad luck.

Jersey’s album Wonderlands is out now.

Manchester City: Tevez May Arrive, Raul Will Not. Oasis Want Nilmar To Sign

Just for a change, it’s attackers and Manchester City stirring up market rumours. This time it is Carlos Tevez. "Next year he will play in a club that is not in the Champions League”, announced his agent Kia Joorabchian to the Daily Express, feeding the rumours of a possible move from United to City.

Where he will not finds Raul. Coach of English club, Mark Hughes has denied the super-offer made to the Real Madrid player: "He is an exceptional player that I admire and respect, but we are not interested and he will not come here".

Finally a message from Brazil. Before the concert in Porto Alegre, Noel Gallagher met the star of the local team: Nilma of Internacional. The singer of Oasis, a great fan of Manchester City, asked him to come and play in England, complimenting him for the great goal he scored against Ronaldo’s Corinthians.

What a mad day! I just woke up at 11:45. A.M.! That in itself is mental. I haven't slept that long since 1998 - Paris, I think it was.

It's FUCKIN' PISSING DOWN WITH RAIN and it's pitch black - maybe not black, but very, very grey.

Curitiba was great. The gig was anyway. Dunno what we're trying to prove by playing places like that, and here in Porto Alegre for that matter. Why not just do 2 big, fuck off gigs in Rio and Sao Paolo?? If everyone in Argentina is willing to travel to Buenos Aires to be part of one of the greatest nights of all time (I'm not kidding, you should've been there!) Then I don't see what the difference is in Brazil. It's the kids who lose out, if you ask me. Someone throwing up a make-shift stage in some car park can never compare with the noise and colour of a stadium. Still, the gigs themselves are great. Could be better though. Anyway, 'nuff of that.

What's happening with you?

As I said, am currently in Porto Alegre. Waiting to soundcheck. In the rain.

Looking forward to going home tomorrow.

In a bit.

Oasis Concert Could Delay Votes

A music concert in north Manchester, featuring the band Oasis, could delay people voting in next month's European ballot, election officials have warned.

The Manchester band plays the first of three huge open-air concerts in Heaton Park on 4 June, which is polling day.

Two main roads bordering the park, Bury Old Road and Sheepfoot Lane, will be closed at 2130 BST - half an hour before polling stations close.

People living in the area are being urged to apply for a postal vote.

Polling stations will be open between 0700 BST and 2200 BST as normal on 4 June, Bury Council said.

Postal ballot

But election officers fear that residents who leave it late to vote might miss out if they find their route blocked.

The cut-off point for applying for a postal vote is 1700 BST on 19 May.

"Elections officers in Bury say that one way to avoid any potential problems would be to use a postal vote," a Bury council spokesperson said.

"Alternatively, some people might choose to go the polls a bit earlier."

Oasis, fronted by Burnage-raised brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher, are returning to Manchester as part of their Dig Out Your Soul world tour.

The final two sell-out concerts, with support from The Enemy and Kasabian, take place on 6 and 7 July.

So. Last night was eventful. The gig was outdoors and it fuckin' pissed down. PISSED DOWN! Monsoon style. Thunder and lightning. You wouldn't get away with that anywhere else in the world. These Brazilians don't give a fuck though. Amazing night. As it always is in Sao Paulo. I was particularly good (well!? I was!!).

We are currently in Curitiba. CURITIBA!! That's NOT a country, Mr Tabloid Writer. It's a city in Brazil.

Liam Gallagher: Solo Albums Will Split Oasis

It looks like Noel Gallagher was right when he told Q magazine (via ChartAttack) that his brother Liam “will f*cking freak out” at his hopes for every member of Oasis to record a solo record before the band’s next release.

In a televised interview from Brazil , Liam responded to Noel’s plans to release a solo record. “I could do that, but I don’t want to do that,” he said. “I’m in Oasis, you know what I mean. If everyone starts going off doing solo records then you might as well just f*cking split the band up, you know what I mean. I’m part of a band and that’s the way it is. If you go on going off doing solo records then there’s no Oasis, you know what I mean. Someone’s gotta be here keeping it together.”

So Noel’s 5-year hiatus plan could be a problem, but once again it’s interesting to see how the Gallagher brothers only communicate with each other through interviews and the occasional tweet.

If the previous comment’s aim wasn’t pointed clearly enough at his brother, Liam gets more explicit at the end of the Q&A. When asked what the best and worst parts to being in Oasis were, he responded: “The best part is obviously the music, playing the gigs, meeting people from different parts of the world. All that stuff. That’s good. The worst part is being in a band with your f*cking brother.”
