As homecomings go, you'd be hard pressed to find bigger super-gigs than the opening three nights of Oasis's UK tour in front of a combined 210,000 mad-for-it fans. But this open-air gig by the lake in Manchester's Heaton Park was less Champagne Supernova and more Smoke on the Water as the set embarrassingly stalled after one and a half songs, thanks to an exploding generator.
Kasabian had done a great job stirring the troops in the evening sunshine playing songs from new album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum. But the audience grew restless when Oasis's opening track, Rock'n'Roll Star, fizzled out into eerie silence as the power failed. Five minutes later they returned but had barely plucked a chord of Lyla when acrid, black smoke bellowed out from behind the stage.
There were boos from the boozy audience, and after half an hour a red-faced Liam and Noel returned with a full-refund vow. But the fault was rectified, and the band went on to perform an impressive set.
Having defined Nineties Britpop, Oasis have matured from troublemakers to an artful live act, who take themselves rather more seriously. Backstage 15 years ago, Liam would be trying to thump Noel's lights out. Now they calmly tuck into a refined meal of marinated sea bass.
While Oasis may have dropped away from the vanguard of the music scene in recent years, listening to their 24-song, cleverly spaced set, you realised the power each song has – its place in your consciousness, where you were when it was first played.
Liam rasped his way through The Shock of the Lightning, and with Cigarettes and Alcohol, Roll With It, Supersonic, Wonderwall and Live Forever, plus Noel's masterful Masterplan, there were genuine thrills in the air.
No one moved on stage, all rooted to the spot for two hours, except during Noel's solos. But for the 70,000 crowd – even without the money-back promise – the brothers were still Manchester's chosen ones.

Liam Gallagher wants someone to kill him if he wears tight jeans.The Oasis singer - whose fashion label Pretty Green launched yesterday (04.06.09) - hates the recent trend for men to wear slim-fitting trousers and has no intention of succumbing to it.
He said: 'I'm not into the skinny look and pointy shoes. They're just not on - they're for girls. I have never worn a pair of pointy shoes in my life and I never will. If you ever see me in a pair, drive over me. That and spray-on jeans'.
The 36-year-old singer decided to embark on a career as a designer after becoming bored of the clothes men's shops stock.
Although he admits Pretty Green - which he works on with tailor Nick Holland - with not be a trailblazing label, he is adamant it will be successful.
He told Britain's GQ magazine: 'My role is, 'Right, let's do a jacket or a coat like this,' and Nick goes away with my ideas and brings them to life. It's a long-term project. People might laugh at it and it might not work out, that's why I am going to be doing clothes that I like rather than making them for someone else.
At the very least I will get a wardrobe out of it.
And I think people will dig it.
It's not reinventing the wheel - it will be a classic parka or trench coat. Nothing crazy going on.'

The Enemy are gutted that they were forced to cancel the opening night support slot on the Oasis stadium tour last night.
The Coventry rockers' frontman Tom Clarke was struck down with chronic food poisoning hours before the show at Manchester's Heaton Park.
Bassist Andy Hopkins said: "Tom's in bed for 48 hours under doctors orders. We don't know what it was that caused the trouble.
Attacked
"He will be back for Saturday's show as we all will as a band. We're absolutely gutted about this and it will make us more determined to blow people's heads off on Saturday. I'll be having down the front with all the Oasis fans this evening."
Tom is desperate to set the record straight with Liam Gallagher, 36, after he attacked The Enemy for apparently slagging off Oasis.
The trio were branded "little f***ers" by their hero after he read an interview in which Tom allegedly called him past it.
Andy, 21, told me "Tom was misquoted. All he was saying was that they are still brilliant now. We are massive fans."
The lads plan to get the drinks in for Oasis and fellow support act Kasabian.
Andy confessed: "We go on stage at 6:30 and we're off by 7:30 so we will be getting the beers in.
"Can't wait to get that head start on the other bands because Kasabian are sound."
But it's not all partying while on tour. The boys have been testing new tunes during soundchecks.

Meanwhile, local residents said an increased police presence promised by the organisers had not materialised and complained of fights breaking out, people dropping litter and urinating in the street.
There were 15 arrests for public order and drugs offences. Resident Allan Shalks said: " There were no police here and a hotline to report anti-social behaviour was just on answerphone. We had to lock the doors and stay inside."
A spokesman for the council said the technical failure, which saw the band leave the stage twice and resulted in a dramatic 45-minute halt, was an issue for the concert organisers and that it would not impact on the future use of the park as a music and event venue.

The band, playing in front of 70,000 fans, were finishing their first song - Rock 'n' Roll Star - when the sound system cut out. The Gallagher brothers left the stage and returned a couple of minutes later, launching into Lyla.
But two huge screens relaying the action to the capacity crowd went blank and there was a plume of smoke from behind the stage.
The band left again - and did not return until 45 minutes later.
There were restless scenes in the crowd, with a number of people carried out by security.
A message was flashed up on the screens blaming a fault with the electrical generator.
That was replaced with a message saying 'Nearly there'.
Refund
The band returned a few minutes later with Noel apologising - and promising everyone a refund. "This is a free gig from now on," he announced.
He later joked: "The generator blew up and they had to go and borrow one from the Argos in Manchester."
With tickets costing £45 each, that could leave someone to foot a £3m bill.
The band then played The Shock of the Lightning before Liam addressed the crowd.
In a reference to a column by M.E.N. columnist and Prestwich resident Angela Epstein - who had said she did not want Oasis playing in Heaton Park - the frontman said: "This one is dedicated to Mrs Epstein of the Manchester Evening News, who thinks we should not be here."
The band then played Cigarettes and Alcohol.
Earlier, there had been unprecedented scenes around the park before the band's arrival.

Tens of thousands of fans had flocked to north Manchester to sample the festival atmosphere as gates opened in the sunshine at 2pm.
The tranquil suburban streets of Prestwich resembled those surrounding Old Trafford on derby day as fans continued to pour in throughout the afternoon.
Special buses from the city centre ferried more in as the day progressed.
The route from the park-and-ride laid on for the event in Bowlee, Rochdale, was lined throughout the afternoon with those who had travelled by car.
Trading standards officers were out in force in a bid to crack down on vendors selling illegal merchandise from street stalls.
Prior to the gig, Noel Gallagher amazed onlookers by walking through city centre Manchester unguarded.
He stopped in St Ann's Square to sign a copy of the Big Issue for a seller and chatted with fans.

Everyone who’s kept their tickets will get a full refund. This is a free gig from now on.” So said Noel Gallagher as he led Oasis on stage for the third time to pick up the threads of a gig that looked for a while as if it was never going to get under way.
A faulty generator had led to the power being cut during the opening number, Rock and Roll Star. The band tried again, and Lyla was cut short in similar fashion — after which the decision to switch to a back-up generator meant that there was a nervous delay of 30 minutes before the band was able to start again.
As a cold wind blew across the grounds of Heaton Park, the 70,000 fans endured the delay with remarkable fortitude, amusing themselves by throwing toilet rolls and pints of beer into the chill evening air. But it nonetheless seemed a generous gesture to declare full refunds all round. And the mood picked up notably as the band waded into a series of up-tempo songs including Shock of the Light, Cigarettes and Alcohol and Roll With It.
This was the first of three gigs — total ticket sales: 210,000 — at a venue not previously frequented by rock acts and which has not witnessed crowds on such a scale since Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there in 1982.
“I came here to see the Pope,” Liam Gallagher said. “He was all right but he didn’t have many tunes.” As if to remedy the situation, Liam dedicated (What’s The Story?) Morning Glory to the late pontiff. Liam was in good form generally, looming around the stage in a green cagoule with his hands in his pockets. He dedicated My Big Mouth to himself.
Compared with the theatrical extravaganzas that have become the norm thanks to recent shows by Beyoncé and Britney, Oasis put on a performance of supreme nonchalance and, despite some stunning lighting effects, rather limited visual appeal. Everyone who’s kept their tickets will get a full refund. This is a free gig from now on.” So said Noel Gallagher as he led Oasis on stage for the third time to pick up the threads of a gig that looked for a while as if it was never going to get under way.
A faulty generator had led to the power being cut during the opening number, Rock and Roll Star. The band tried again, and Lyla was cut short in similar fashion — after which the decision to switch to a back-up generator meant that there was a nervous delay of 30 minutes before the band was able to start again.
As a cold wind blew across the grounds of Heaton Park, the 70,000 fans endured the delay with remarkable fortitude, amusing themselves by throwing toilet rolls and pints of beer into the chill evening air. But it nonetheless seemed a generous gesture to declare full refunds all round. And the mood picked up notably as the band waded into a series of up-tempo songs including Shock of the Light, Cigarettes and Alcohol and Roll With It.
This was the first of three gigs — total ticket sales: 210,000 — at a venue not previously frequented by rock acts and which has not witnessed crowds on such a scale since Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there in 1982.
“I came here to see the Pope,” Liam Gallagher said. “He was all right but he didn’t have many tunes.” As if to remedy the situation, Liam dedicated (What’s The Story?) Morning Glory to the late pontiff. Liam was in good form generally, looming around the stage in a green cagoule with his hands in his pockets. He dedicated My Big Mouth to himself.
Compared with the theatrical extravaganzas that have become the norm thanks to recent shows by Beyoncé and Britney, Oasis put on a performance of supreme nonchalance and, despite some stunning lighting effects, rather limited visual appeal. I bumped into the rock Lord in the bar of a Manchester hotel during last minute preparations for the first of the band’s UK mega gigs last night.
And the wily old fox told me he was ready to send hundreds of thousands of beer-soaked fans roaring Oasis hits into the sunset this summer.
On the eve of the first of three nights at the city’s Heaton Park he told me: “All the gigs will be special. We’re lucky enough to be playing some amazing places. I can’t wait. The summer of bigness is upon us!”
What a typically amazing Noelism. I’m going to adopt the “bigness” phrase to describe the top gigs and festivals happening this summer.

A dose of food-poisoning unfortunately forced The Enemy frontman Tom Clarke to scrap the band’s opening slot last night.
Their place was taken by Reverend And The Makers.
Kasabian were also on the bill.
Noel, brother Liam, Andy Bell and Gem Archer have been gigging all over the world for months.
And Noel has been keeping me posted with the nonsense he’s encountered overseas, including a journalist thinking it was him who married Patsy Kensit in 1997, when it was Liam.
He said: “I’ll relay to you an exchange between me and a South African. They said: ‘Are you still in touch with Patsy Kensit?’
‘Who? Me?’
‘Yes, you! You were married to her, weren’t you?’
‘No, no, that was my brother... Liam’ ‘Oh! Which one are you then?”
What a blunder.
Noel added: “There is no worst thing about touring. Winging around the planet, playing your tunes to thousands of screaming kids.
“Airport security can be a ****er I suppose but the free crisps make up for it.
The band did have a close encounter with swine flu in South America though.
Noel said: “Going into Venezuela was a bit creepy. All the airport staff were wearing masks. It was a bit like a Tale Of The Unexpected. In the end it was only the flu. I’ve done Top Of The Pops flued out of my mind! It ain’t so bad.”
He bought his suitcase home rammed with gifts for his missus Sara, son Donovan and daughter Anais. His haul included badges, CDs, chocs, a football kit and a pair of glass slippers.
Speaking of slippers, Liam launched his own clothing range, Pretty Green, yesterday. The website crashed with the huge demand.
I asked Noel if Liam’s new pal Gok Wan would be analysing their outfits from side of stage.
And his answer was another classic Noelism: “Who’s Gok Wan? A celebrity chef? Is that a real person’s name or an anagram?”
Pure class.
Luckily extra tickets have gone on sale for Oasis gigs at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on June 12 and Wembley on July 9, 11 and 12.

They were forced off the stage in front of around 70,000 fans at Heaton Park during their opening song, Rock 'N' Roll Star, due to sound problems just after 9pm.
The Burnage-born Gallagher brothers and co returned to the stage about 10 minutes laterand began to play Lyla - but that song was also cut short due to more technical difficulties.
A message appeared on the stage screens saying generator failure was causing the issues, though the crowd expressed their disapproval with the situation.
Witnesses at the event said smoke could be seen coming from the equipment.
The Manchester band finally reappeared on stage at just before 9.50pm.
Liam Gallagher apologised to the crowd and promised them a refund, adding it was now "a free gig".
There was an 11pm curfew on the concert though Noel Gallagher said the band would play until they were thrown out.
Around 210,000 fans were expected to pour into Heaton Park for three Oasis concerts, the others being on Saturday and Sunday.

At around 9pm (BST) following support slots from Twisted Wheel, Reverend And The Makers (standing in for The Enemy, who cancelled due to frontman Tom Clarke falling ill) and Kasabian the band began their set with 'Rock 'N' Roll Star'.
The song was stopped due to sound problems. The band headed off stage for around ten minutes to the sound of boos from the crowd.
They then returned and began to play 'Lyla' – although that song was cut short due to further sound troubles.
The band left the stage again, while a message appeared on the stage screens declaring that the problems would be fixed as soon as technical staff could sort them out.
The message explained that generator failure was causing the issues, while smoke could be seen emanating from the equipment. It was then updated to say "Almost there!".
Oasis returned to the stage after around 40 minutes to successfully kick-start the set again with 'The Shock Of The Lightning' and 'Cigarettes And Alcohol', with the Gallaghers promising to give fans their money back.
"Really sorry about that," Liam Gallagher told the crowd. "This is a free gig now. Everyone will get a refund."
His brother Noel added: "The curfew's 11, but we'll play 'til they kick us off. Keep your ticket and you'll get your money back."
Later in the set, however, the logistics of the promised refunds seemed to trouble Noel. "We're not sure how its gonna work with getting the money back,” he said before playing 'Half The World'. “Be on a website or summat. We're not getting paid for this so buy a t-shirt on the way out. Credit crunch and that, keep my kids in sweets.
"If you're getting your mum and dad to pick you up outside afterwards, tell we're not leaving til 2am. Kind of regret offering you your money back now. Apply for it back if you wanna be a cunt, we do our best for you."
The band played a 24-song set, ending with their customary cover of The Beatles' 'I Am The Walrus' at 11:20pm.

The Enemy have pulled out of tonight's show. Tom's got food poisoning. Shame. Was looking forward to seeing them for the 1st time. Nevermind. Big-John-the-Reverend and his Makers are doing the honours and stepping in.
While I'm on the subject of The Enemy. There's been an attempt by the NME to try and start some juvenille, pathetic feud between the bands in the run up to these gigs. Can I assure everyone that there is not and never will be anything between the working classes and its heroes.
If I personally see any weasel from the NME at these gigs (which is highly unlikely) they'll be getting escorted off site. In fact, you could do me a favour here. If you see an NME journalist at any of the gigs (and let's face it, they're pretty easy to spot; they don't stray far from hospitality, wear God-awful clothes - particularly the shoes - got dreadful hair and that kind of "mug me" look about them), give 'em a clip round the ear-hole from me and tell 'em to behave.

But it is his very own parka that he is lending to one of the stars of a new 1960s musical that debuts at Nottingham's Theatre Royal next week.
Mod Crop's leading man, Mark Joseph, will be wearing the item as part of his essential Mod wardrobe.

Steve Wallis, who co-wrote the musical with novelist and former Mod Alan Fletcher, said: "As you can imagine, we are absolutely delighted to have Liam support us on the show.
"Liam said, 'this sounds like a pretty cool thing to be doing'.
"Mod is something Liam is known to have an interest in and to have him involved in our show is a great honour."
It was Liam's idea for Mark to wear his parka during the show, which he heard about during a Pretty Green photo shoot using a Vespa scooter, which will feature in the musical.
Steve, from Wollaton, said: "Liam expressed an instant interest and proposed that Mark wear his parka and asked us to advertise his Pretty Green clothing range in our programme."
The Vespa, owned by Dave Wyburn, was ridden by Sting in the film Quadrophenia.
Alan, whose novel Brummel's Last Riff forms the basis for the musical, said: "I met Dave at Mod Aid in Portsmouth a few years ago and the scooter was on show there.
"Everyone wants a piece of this iconic bike, it's been used in loads of fashion shoots.
"Dave will always unselfishly promote other people and he told Noel and Liam about the show in Nottingham.
"We have invited them to come along but I think Oasis are on tour during the musical."

Over 10,000 people tried to buy Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher's clothing line when it launched online this morning, causing the site to crash. Indeed, Gallagher's been teasing the line for months with online videos of rather impressive production values. In March he put up the first grainy black-and-white video, in which he explains that he decided to do the line, called Pretty Green, because he can't find any clothes he wants to wear. He said he planned to "fucking get rid of" the skinny look. And finally, three months later, Liam has posted a new video! And his clothes are finally available for purchase online to registered users!
First we watched Liam's new video, which was just as earnest as his last, and then we looked at the clothes. Plain T-shirts, plain jackets, plain scarves, plain jersey polos, plain crew-neck knit sweaters, and a parka, all with the "Pretty Green" logo. So these are the clothes Liam had to make for himself because he couldn't find them anywhere else. These garments express his passion for clothes. These represent the groundbreaking, non-skinny aesthetic he promised the world. They're more anticlimactic than Christina Aguilera's last new single.
"I’m not doing it to make money," Liam says in the new video. "I’m doing it 'cause I’m into clothes." And later, when he's trying on a T-shirt under a blazer not by Pretty Green: "It’s fucking blowing my mind. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. And obviously, buy it you fuckers.”
