On This Day In Oasis History...

"Songbird" is a song by British rock band Oasis, from their fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry. It was released as the fourth single from that album on 3 February 2003 and peaked at #3 in the UK charts. Being written by lead singer Liam Gallagher, it was the first time the band had released a single not written by his brother Noel.

Upon joining Oasis in the early nineties, Noel Gallagher claimed sole-songwriting responsibilities, and allowing little-to-no leeway from the rest of the band. He openly mocked the songwriting output of Liam and Bonehead, who had been in charge of Oasis' songwriting prior to his joining and had written a handful of tracks such as "Take Me" and an acoustic number titled "Life In Vain". Liam elaborated on the situation in 1994, after the release of Definitely Maybe saying "Noel won't let me (write), but I can't really write anyway... In the future if I started writing top tunes, I still don't think he'd be up for it... I know for a fact, even if he was going dry, he wouldn't play my songs... I'm not happy with that, but that's the way it is innit?".

However, after Oasis' third album Be Here Now received a cold reception from music critics, Noel began to loosen his control and allowed Liam to contribute songs. Though his first effort, "Little James" which appeared on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, was criticised for being too simple and childlike (in particular, rhyming "plasticine" with "trampoline"), Songbird was fairly well received, despite only being based around two simple chords (G + Em7).

The song, written for Liam's long term girlfriend Nicole Appleton, was seen as a surprising break away from Liam's "Hard-Man" image. He explained this away saying "I like beautiful things...It's not all dark in Liam World. I take me shades off every now and again and have a look at the world and see some nice things."

The simplistic video was filmed in Regent's Park in London, and featured Liam playing an acoustic guitar under a tree, and also being chased by a dog.

Songbird is the shortest running Oasis single, at 2:07.

The song is included on Oasis' 2006 'best-of' album Stop The Clocks.

Noel Gallagher Rocking For Cancer

Noel Gallagher has announced his only two gigs of 2010 - as part of this year's incredible Teenage Cancer Trust charity concerts.

The annual music and comedy shows at London's Royal Albert Hall are celebrating their tenth birthday and Depeche Mode kick off with a show on February 17.

Then comes the main series of gigs, over nine nights from March 22, and ex-Oasis star Noel joins a music line-up any festival would kill for.

Arctic Monkeys, The Specials, The Who, Them Crooked Vultures, Suede and JLS will all take the stage.

Teenage Cancer Trust patron, former The Who frontman Roger Daltrey, said: "It's a blinder. I'm over the moon. It will be Noel's only gigs this year, so those nights will be special."

Some might sniff at JLS but Roger isn't a man to mess with and has been after a big pop act for years.

He said: "Kids have to start somewhere and JLS are for young people. Music snobs might turn their noses up but there's no place for them in the business."

Well said, Rog. The Teenage Cancer Trust is close to my heart, too, and the gigs have been a highlight of working on Bizarre.

Noel, who also played the trust's event in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007, said: "Ten years ago I got a call from Roger asking me to join him for the first ever concert for the charity.

Since then I've been honoured to support this amazing charity. I've had some of the best nights I've ever had on a UK stage."

The full line-up is: Depeche Mode, Feb 17; Them Crooked Vultures, March 22; Jimmy Carr, Noel Fielding and Rod Gilbert, March 23; Suede, March 24; Noel Gallagher, March 25 & 26; Arctic Monkeys, March 27; JLS, March 28; The Specials, March 29; The Who, March 30. Tickets go on sale from this Friday at teenagecancertrust.org, royalalberthall.com (0845 401 5030) and gigsandtours.com (0871 230 7136).

Noel Gallagher To Play Two Nights In London For Cancer Charity

Teenage Cancer Trust today announces an all-star, 10-night line up to celebrate its 10th year of music and comedy at the Royal Albert Hall in association with Nomura. Following Depeche Mode’s sold-out gig on 17 February, rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures will kick off nine consecutive nights starting on Monday 22 March.

The week continues with a comedy night on Tuesday 23 March, featuring Jimmy Carr, Rhod Gilbert and Noel Fielding. Wednesday 24 March sees the return of brit-pop legends Suede, reforming for one night only for Teenage Cancer Trust. Noel Gallagher, performing for the first time since Oasis split last year, plays Thursday 25 and Friday 26 March. His two-night run, the only shows planned for 2010, promises to be unforgettable.

On Saturday 27 March Arctic Monkeys will play the Royal Albert Hall for the very first time. Sunday will be Teenage Cancer Trust’s first ever pop night, headlined by MOBO winners and multi-Brit nominated JLS.

Monday 29 is the Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig featuring ska legends The Specials. NME has today announced that The Specials will be given the Outstanding Contribution award on 24 February at London’s Iconic O2 Academy Brixton. In recognition of Teenage Cancer Trust’s link with the British Music Industry and work with young people with cancer, NME has renamed the award the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution.
The Who will wrap up the 10-night spectacular in style on Tuesday 30 with a performance of Quadrophenia. Announcing the line up, Roger Daltrey CBE, Patron of Teenage Cancer Trust said: “When The Who first got together in 2000 to raise money for this brilliant charity, I had no idea we’d achieve so much from these shows. In the last ten years we’ve raised over £8.7 million, helping Teenage Cancer Trust to open nine more specialist cancer units for young people across the UK.

“Teenage Cancer Trust has come such a long way since our first gig and I’m extremely proud of this event. I’m forever inspired by the support I have received from the artists and members of the music and comedy industries. This year has been no exception and it’s thanks to them that our 10th anniversary shows are set to break all records for Teenage Cancer Trust.”

Paolo Maldini Signs Up For Liam Gallagher's Pretty Green Label

Mamma Mia! Manchester is going mad fer all things Italian these days.

Italian football legend Paolo Maldini and rocker Liam Gallagher have gone into business together.

And the move comes hot on the heels of Roberto Mancini's recent appointment as Man City chief.

Ex-AC Milan star Maldini has pumped a lot of lira into Pretty Green, Liam's thriving clothes business.

And the odd couple, who have known each other for years after meeting on an Oasis tour, have grand plans to become a leading fashion house in Europe.

A source said: "Liam has long been a fan of Paolo Maldini. They met when Oasis were on tour in Europe years ago and kept in touch.

"Paolo has had a long and distinguished football career and is starting to consider hanging up his boots for good.

"He has been looking into investment opportunities and Pretty Green came up in a conversation when Liam announced the big launch in London last year.

Wedge

"A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes over the past month to make it happen but the money has now been agreed which will take Pretty Green to the next level."

I never thought I'd see one of the most famous footballers of all time discussing parkas with a lad from Burnage.

Maldini is just one of the army of heavyweights supporting the singer's clobber firm.

Big bucks investors on New York's Wall St have pumped in mountains of wedge and Liam, who released Be Here Now with the band in 1997, has put his money where his large gob is too.

Getting some other top names involved in the brand will only help sell more threads on the Continent.

He should tap up Alessandro Del Piero too - he's a pal of Noel's.

Former and current Oasis frontman Liam was waxing lyrical only this week about his admiration for Roberto Mancini's fashion taste.

The City gaffer, known as "Bobby Manc" to the Blues faithful, hit the headlines recently for his stylish take on wearing a scarf in Man City colours.

Liam said: "The scarf is cool. I want one. Mancini looks good, but then all Italians are cool."

None more so than Maldini.

He is almost as good as Sol Bamba, centre half for my team Hibs. And he's just about as good-looking as Chris Hogg who's also in the back four...

Oasis Brit Awards 2010 Betting

Oasis lead the Album of 30 Years market at 2.8.

Commentators have complained that this year's nominees are the safest in Brits history but the hodge-podge of coffee-table/Dad rock bores for the Album of 30 Years - Dire Straits, Dido, Keane - is testament to the enduring irrelevance of the awards.

All the more reason to liven up proceedings with a few wagers then...

Serge Pizzorno Thinks Noel Gallagher Is Mexican

Kasabian guitarist Serge Pizzorno thinks Noel Gallagher is “Mexican” – because he loves tequila.

The rocker – who is close friends with the former Oasis guitarist – says every time he has a night out with the ‘Falling Down’ songwriter they end up drinking huge amounts of the strong South American shot.

Serge said: “I think Noel might be part Mexican the way he goes at tequila.”

Kasabian singer Tom Meighan agrees with his bandmate and insists 42-year-old Noel lives up to his hard partying reputation with ease.

He said: “Noel is very much a tequila man and moving from bar to bar – brilliant.”

Although both Tom enjoys a night out with Noel, he insists his brother Liam, 37, is as equally good company.

The ‘Fire’ singer added: “Liam can sit on the same stool with ten pints of Guinness but you only have to chat with him for an hour and you’ve travelled through the f***ing universe on a magic stairlift. Two very different propositions but both brilliant.”

Buzz up!“I can’t get in them…They’re for girls, man. They look good on girls,” he said. And Liam, 37, who is staying off cigarettes and alcohol, hopes to party if Oasis win a Brit award in Feb.

“I hope people vote for us to win the best album of the past 30 years because I want to go, I want to have a night out,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling, XFM. “It would close the Oasis thing for me if we won and I could thank the fans. So get voting, or don’t, and I’ll stay in and play The Beatles. Either way I’ll have a blinding night,” the rocker added.
