Beady Eye Album Review From Rockin' On Magazine

Taken from the Japanese music magazine Rokin' On.

This is a rough translation from the album review, the original can be found here.

Four Letter Word

"Four-letter word" has sharp hard edge riffs. Aggression like the Pistols, Sharp like Led Zeppelin, a kick ass tune to match anything done by Oasis, It is a powerful opening track. Lively guitar solo interlude by Gem.

Millionaire

A light psychedelic acoustic number. Like the Beach Boys on acid, or John Lennon when high. Liam vocals and the slide guitar a smooth. A cute little charming song.

The Roller

This is the official first single. Originally written during the Oasis' Heathen Chemistry session. The tone is reminiscent of "All You Need is Love" with shades of "Half the World Away". The chorus melody sounds like something McMartney would write. In the video, Gem plays the piano. The band really loves the tune.

Beatles and Stones

Is just what you would think from the title, and the guitar sound like a rhythm Haneru Who ŽvIkkiri. Bti is Mesa's rock and roll, rock Yaritee! The lyrics are about the yearning to rock and roll and it's a little cliche, This song is simpler rock'n roll like "Bring the Light", but they are stimulating. Liam and the boys are searching for the answer of "what is rock'n roll?" and are well on the road.

Wind Up Dream

A Dark bluesy-rock feels a bit like Neil Young. Different from the more uplifting melodies running through the rest of the album. There is an intertwining guitar and vocal solo, that never happened in Oasis .

Bring The Light

A quick, familiar, and memorable Beady Eye tune. Like a Jerry Lee Lewis-style boogie piano, or 70's Stones. It's simple, straightforward rock and roll but obviously, "Not Oasis". This track shows Beady Eye's pride and fighting spirit. They are saying "Let the gear change, it'll still rock and roll," C'mon baby!

For Anyone

Inspirational pop melody reminiscent of "Songbird." It's a gentle tune with some atmosphere. Aspects drawn from the Beatles, in a good way. Pretty impressive. It has 60s pop style rhythm, with fairly cliched love song lyrics.

Kill For A Dream

Like "Champagne Supernova" it's also likely to please the fans, a super ballad masterpiece! The "Na na na" chorus reminds you of "Hey Jude". This song sounds the most "like Oasis" of anything on the album.

Standing On The Edge Of The Noise

Glam rock explosion. Like "Bring the Light" but much harder. Liam's roughest vocals on the album. A combination of "Drive My Car" and "Get Back". So basically like mid-late Beatles.

Wigwam

The strings can hear sound and groove, psychedelic and modern rock. The "Sha La La" chorus makes "All Around the World" sound like a pipe dream. It feels like the climax/finale of the album. Liam sings in falsetto, Liam sounds like he did when he was young.

The Ring Circus

Sounds like John Lennon rock 'n roll with some heavy blues-rock atmosphere. There are points in the chorus where the vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Oasis. Sounds like it would have fit onto Oasis next album, had there been one. Sounds like where Oasis were going?

The Beat Goes On

Like a John Lennon ballad then Liam pauses for a bit then there is a dramatic explosion of sound into something that is reminiscent of a medley of tunes from Abbey Road and For Anyone. A sweet and gentle vocal.

The Morning Son

Starts acoustically and then dramatically expands when the drums come in into an epic tune, worthy of being on the album. There are reverse guitar and strings to boost the sound. May remind some of "Whatever"

Thanks to GDFFORVER with the translation.

Gem Archer And Liam Gallagher Talk About Beady Eye's Debut Album

Gem Archer has told Mojo that there is a bit of Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley in the new Beady Eye album ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’ that's released on February 28th on the band's own record label.

The guitarist said" "We rehearsed it, we had it almost like a set, so we could put a lot of these songs down live. The word 'psychedelia' has been used. I always say that is a very large word, almost meaningless to some people. So I would just say 'colourful'. There's a bit of Brian Jones-era Stones, a bit of Elvis. When I say the psychedelia thing, I'd compare it to when The Kinks were slightly psychedelic. Most of it's stripped down in a kind of kitchen-sink way, and almost always trying to keep a light on it's feet., like a debut album should be. I still remember the term 'jukebox classic', tunes you'd stick on in the pub.

Also speaking to Mojo about Beady Eye's debut album, was front man Liam Gallagher who said "It's not soppy ballardy shit. They're some good ballsy tunes. I mean, a couple of tunes are just a bit slower than the rest, but they've got a bit of balls. It's 90 per cent rocking. If Oasis were black and white this is proper, proper Technicolour."

Liam Gallagher On Working Without Brother Noel And More

Liam Gallagher has said that working without brother Noel in his new band Beady Eye is a different experience all together.

The frontman told Mojo " We had the little fella who was taking charge, doing his thing and I think he just hogged it a bit. Now it's totally different.

When asked if it was liberating the singer said " I don't know man, Nah, because I loved being in Oasis. Oasis was free too. But it had obviously got stuck in a rut, or it was moving that kind of way, and people don't like change. It's just nice being behind a microphone, being involved in music. I guess I just have more energy then our kid. He's grown up. The guy's writing songs for fifty year olds. It's about having fun isn't it? F**king young people these days want to be old people. Sat listening to Bob Dylan and shit, thinking too much. It's about getting a sweat on, that's what it's about."

When asked how the last days of Oasis were, the singer said " After some gigs there was no vibe, in the dressing room, and that it was like, f**king hell here we go again, f**king nobody speaking. I mean, when me and the lads were together we'd have great time but then when the other one came in... f**king hell, it was like someone had been shot. And that ain't fun. So this time we can have a laugh."

Gaz Coombes Thinks Noel Gallagher Will Be More Experimental Than Liam

Gaz Coombes reckons Noel Gallagher's forthcoming debut solo album will be more challenging than his brother's new band, Beady Eye.

Gaz Coombes reckons Noel Gallagher's solo album will be more challenging than Beady Eye.

The former Supergrass frontman is looking forward to albums from the ex-Oasis guitarist and his singer brother - who now fronts Beady Eye - but thinks Noel will be the more experimental of the two.

He told BANG Showbiz: "Beady Eye - it's very Liam, if there was anything you'd expect him to bring out, that sums him up. That hold on John Lennon is still very apparent.

"I think that's what's important really when you embark on a new project, to express what you want and how you sing naturally, and that's what he's done.

"But I think it's within Noel to kind of explore and to challenge himself as well, I'm a bit more open as to what Noel might do."

Alan McGee On Oasis, Beady Eye And Noel Gallagher

Alan Mcgee talks to www.live4ever.uk.com about Noel Gallagher's album, Beady Eye, Oasis and more.

You’ve said in the past that by 1993 Creation probably needed Oasis as much as Oasis needed Creation. But did you think that night in Glasgow you’d found the band which would effectively solve all the label’s problems?

Alan: No, I just thought they were a great band. I signed them really at the end of the day on ‘…Walrus’ as it was a great version, but who was to ever think they would become that massive?

There’s plenty of classics to choose from, but is there one album released on the Creation label you hold closest to your heart?

Alan: Probably the first Oasis album or Trashmonk – ‘Mona Lisa Overdrive’ which I love.

So what of Oasis’ break up? It certainly seems to have reinvigorated Liam, and there’s lots expected from Noel’s album. Do you think by 2009 a split had become the best thing for the brothers?

Alan: Yeah, they needed to go do their own thing which they are doing.

Not long after they split you expected a reunion within five years. Do you still hold that opinion?

Alan: Let’s see. I still think it’s unfinished business.

Did you get the same buzz from listening to some of Noel’s new material as you did when hearing tracks from ‘Definitely Maybe’ and ‘…Morning Glory’ all those years ago?

Alan: Well his new songs are the best thing I have heard since the Glasvegas demos. To be honest, it’s only the Gallaghers and Glasvegas I like in modern music, other than that it’s still The Beatles for me.

You could almost call Beady Eye a Creation band since former label mates Gem Archer and Andy Bell are still involved. People should be well aware of Andy Bell’s career before Oasis, but what of Gem Archer? Do you feel Heavy Stereo were a band with unfulfilled potential?

Alan: They were really good. Ride were amazing. Good luck to Liam – he’s very warm hearted and very like-able is Mr G.

John Mackie Featuring Bonehead (EX-Oasis) Full Band And Tour

John was born and raised in Glasgow and spent a lot of time listening to his parent’s wide choice of music from Elvis, Johnny Cash to Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison.

A move to Manchester in 88 prompted an early interest in the music scene from hanging out with his older cousin who along with his friends were huge fans of the early 90s scene.

John began to develop his own musical opinion with his own personal influences, this became more than just listening but the want and need to perform and express.

John’s music is honest and truthful and maybe closer to reality than some people will want to get but that’s the way he is. John Mackie is not about to make music that you can listen to comfortably in the background whilst sipping your wine and gazing into the eyes of your loved one.

It’s about being given a healthy and much needed dose of honesty.. not sanitised for the X Factor TV market.. anger not angst.

Plus to top that off he is joined by a fantastic backline with the legendary Bonehead from Oasis on guitar duties to bring you John’s own interpretation on sound and songs.

A live set not to be missed, listen to SILVER FISH (here) and ALASKA (here)

The Sand Band's David McDonnell Confirmed For Noel Gallagher's Backing Band

We first told you back in August of 2009 that Noel Gallagher had been speaking to members of the Sand Band about joining his new backing band. The Guardian has now released a review of the Sandband's debut album confirming the lead singer's participation in Noel's band.

The Sand Band's singer and guitarist David McDonnell will be playing in Noel Gallagher's new backing band, but don't hold that against him. In this instance, the elder Gallagher's ears are clearly in perfect nick: the Liverpudlian quintet's debut album is excellent. Its chief influences are drawn from either side of the Pennines, namely the more wistful, folk side of fellow Scouser Michael Head, leader of Gallagher favourites Shack, as well as the shimmering ballads of Sheffield's Richard Hawley. Somehow, McConnell is even more melancholic than either, making this the ideal accompaniment to a quietly nursed pint.

More On Rhys Ifans For Creation Records Film Role

The man credited with discovering Oasis has revealed he wants Rhys Ifans to play him in a movie about the story of Creation Records.

It’s an apt choice for Creation Records supremo Alan McGee, who has settled in Hay-On-Wye. Not only is the Welsh Notting Hill star a friend, but he once fronted an incarnation of Super Furry Animals before they signed to McGee’s seminal label.

And in the video for the Oasis hit The Importance of Being Idle, Ifans played the part of a high-kicking funeral director.

Opening up on possible movie projects in the pipeline, McGee told Wales on Sunday: “There are two ideas – a druggie one and one that’s more serious. Me, Tim Abbot of Creation Records and Rhys would all love to be in a movie about Creation.

“Creation is something that I’ve had nothing but success with, so I know a movie about it would work. Rhys spends most of the time in Spain now [where he has a farm in Majorca]. He is a genius and he is my friend and I would love him to play me in the Creation story which would cover all the emotions.”

He added: “We would all like to work together to cultivate the idea and my character but I’m not going to reveal too much about it just yet.

“The other movie idea would combine Creation and me as a maverick music guy with the stories of Malcolm McLaren (late Sex Pistols manager) and Tony Wilson (the Factory Records and Happy Mondays manager).”

McGee famously co-founded the Creation Records label in 1983, which was home to such ’80s and ’90s luminaries as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Super Furry Animals, My Bloody Valentine, The House of Love and – most famously – Oasis.

McGee is already the main subject of Upside Down:The Creation Records Story, a new documentary expected to be available as a DVD and to be broadcast on TV screens from April. The film, named after the Mary Chain’s 1984 debut single, features interviews with JAMC’s Jim Reid, Bobbie Gillespie of Primal Scream and Oasis’s Noel Gallagher.

McGee said: “Danny O’Conner who directs Upside Down is a genius and he managed to get just about everybody involved in it to take part. But Liam Gallagher didn’t go in it because Danny was scared that if they both appeared it would turn into the Oasis Show, and Noel thought that too.”

Meanwhile, McGee said he was getting used to the peace of the Mid Wales countryside – as well as its flip side.

“I moved to Wales for the quiet life and I should be getting a bus pass!

“But I love it here even more than Scotland; the people here are the sweetest I’ve ever met. As a result of Upside Down I’m going to be attending about every film festival going this year.

“But I like nothing better than DJ-ing at a pub in Mountain Ash, with 300 people singing songs by Oasis and the Beatles’ All You Need Is Love for hours on end.”

Liam Gallagher: There Was Never Any Question About Me Working With Gem, Andy Or Chris

Liam Gallagher has told the NME that there was never any question about him going on with his other Beady Eye band mates after Oasis split in August 2009.

He said: "There was never any question about me going on with Gem and Andy and Chris. Without them I probably wouldn't be in a band. I'd probably got stuck into doing the Pretty Green 'gear', chilled out for a bit, whatever".

Liam Gallagher Is John’s Latest Recruit

Pop megastar Liam Gallagher has become the latest in a long line of celebrities to back a campaigning football team.

The Oasis singer was in Glasgow to launch his new clothes shop, Pretty Green, and was besieged by hundreds of fans and paparazzi.

But that didn’t stop Renfrewshire United boss John Plott fighting his way through the heaving throng to ‘have a word’.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: “I wasn’t really surprised how busy it was, to be honest.

“The opening of the shop had been cancelled in December because of the weather and the new date had been well publicised in the papers and on radio.

“The one thing I couldn’t believe though was the amount of Liam ‘clones’ that were there. It was really spooky because everyone looked just like him!”

But John, who campaigns against bigotry and racism through his football club, managed a word with one of his musical idols and, more importantly, grabbed the opportunity to hand over one of the famous blue and green United tops – with ‘Wonderball’ emblazoned across the front.

He said: “Ingram Street was packed and we must have waited there for over an hour, but it was well worth it.

“I didn’t think we’d get near him when I saw the crowds but we’ve never given up in our lives and managed to fight our way to the front.

“When he got out his car I stepped forward and told him a bit about the team.

“He said, ‘that sounds great, mate’ and I passed him the strip. He said thanks and wished us good luck before making his way though the crowd into his shop.

“I thought ‘Wonderball’ was appropriate as one of Oasis’ biggest hits was ‘Wonderwall’.”

In the past, Plott and co have presented a strip to ex-Manchester City boss Mark Hughes, footballer Craig Bellamy, and Chelsea captain John Terry.

Liam Gallagher: Working With Gem And Andy Is Like "Putting On A Great F**king Jacket"

Liam Gallagher has told the NME that working with Gem Archer and Andy Bell for Beady Eye, is like "putting on a great f**king jacket".

The singer said "When I'm singing anything that Gem or Andy have written, it just feels absoulutly natural for me. There's not a single song of theirs where I'm like, 'F*ck this, it doesn't feel like me', or that I can't get involved in. It's like putting on a great f**king jacket, you know what I mean? I know I can wear it well".

Beady Eye release their eagerly anticipated debut album 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' on 28th February 2011 on Beady Eye Records. The album features 13 brand new songs written by the band and was recorded at RAK Studios in autumn 2010 with producer Steve Lillywhite.

The band recorded the video for debut single 'The Roller' in sub zero temperatures in Cambridgeshire in December performing in a ‘Motorcycle Wall of Death’, one of only two in the country, complete with motorcycle stunt riders.

Rhys Ifans Lined Up For New Biopic Of Oasis Svengali Alan McGee

Former Oasis manager and Creation records boss Alan McGee is in talks about a movie based on his life - with Rhys Ifans playing the lead role.

And Glasgow-born McGee, who also brought us The Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Primal Scream, is so keen to get the project off the ground that he gave up the chance to tour with his proteges and pals Glasvegas.

McGee is already the star of documentary film Upside Down: the Creation Records Story, which will have its Scots premiere on February 22.

He's now revealed to the Razz that he has other bigscreen projects in the pipeline.

McGee, 50, explained: "James from Glasvegas wanted me to come out on tour this week but I've got to go to London for a big film meeting.

"It's a really weird time as people seems to have come out of a depression and the big film guy I'm meeting is a good guy.

"He's good for a laugh and is interested in talking to me about making a feature film about Creation.

"It's a film about some lunatic who runs a label that ends up making millions of pounds.

"Actually there are two movie ideas - a druggie one and one that's more serious. Maybe we can make one that combines both."

Alan, who said he would love to get Mr Nice star Ifans to play him, was in Scotland yesterday to film a cameo role in a new music video for the Scots band Cousti.

In the video for their country rock song Sweetest Tunes, he can be seen playing the mandolin, a la John Peel in Rod Stewart's classic Maggie May.

Alan said: "It was fun - the weirdest thing was I realised I've made about 300 videos in my life and I don't think I've ever been in one playing an instrument before."

Alan, who these days spends most of his time with his family in Wales, also missed out on catching up with Liam Gallagher when he visited his Glasgow clothes shop, Pretty Green, last week.

After Liam claimed McGee was wrong to believe Oasis would re-form, he said: "Maybe I am wrong.

"From a fan point of view, I'd love to see them back."

He added: "Liam also said that Noel was making music for 50-year-olds but I don't have a problem with t hat as I am 50. "Noel is making for 21-year-olds and 70-year-olds too."
