Review: Beady Eye In Swindon

The audience were going mad for it when Liam Gallagher took to the stage last night.

The former lead singer of the legendary Oasis has been keen to shake off the link to his former band since their acrimonious split in 2009, but playing at the place which is rumoured to have given the band their name made it a difficult task.

As a huge fan of Oasis I was ecstatic at the prospect of seeing Liam rock the stage in Swindon, an intimate venue Oasis would never have dreamed of visiting.

But if I closed my eyes during the intro to Millionaire, then opened them to look around at the audience with their sheepskin coats and Mod-inspired hairstyles, I could have been back in the late 1990s when Oasis were in their prime.

Liam still has his Mancunian swagger. Wearing a green duffle coat, he looked more than comfortable on stage with all eyes focused on him – something I think he has enjoyed all his career.

He and the other band members – guitarist Gem Archer and guitarist Andy Bell (both former members of Oasis), joined by drummer and percussionist Chris Sharrock, who played with Oasis during their last tour in 2008, before they broke up – helped send Beady Eye’s debut album, Different Gear, Still Speeding, to number three in the UK charts.

The die-hard Oasis fans at last night’s gig – mostly men in their 30s and 40s – didn’t seem to miss Liam’s older brother, Noel, Oasis’s chief songwriter who walked out on the band in August 2009. Between each song came the chant of ‘Liam, Liam, Liam’, to which he simply replied ‘Swindon’.

He belted out the big hits – The Roller, Four Letter Word and Bring The Light – all songs showing the band’s transition from 1990s Brit Pop and their attempt to put their own stamp on things.

Liam has never hidden where his musical influences come from and they are more than obvious in the song Beatles and Stones which, judging by the reaction it got last night, is sure to be a hit.

Liam acknowledged that “I’m the last of a dying breed” in the song A Beat Goes On, but looking at the thousands who packed into the Oasis, that breed is still going strong.

Whether Beady Eye stand the test of time has yet to be seen, but if those old Oasis fans and all the new Beady Eye ones have anything to do with in, the beat will go on and on.

One Direction's Harry Styles: "I Love Take That And Noel Gallagher"

The 'Gotta Be You' star reveals some of his favourite bands and albums.

One Direction star Harry Styles has revealed that he is a big fan of Take That and former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.

The 'Gotta Be You' star spoke about his interests in a Twitter Q&A with his fans earlier today (15th November).

Asked by one follower to name his favourite boy band, Harry replied: "Take that... Legends."

He also said his favourite album at the moment was 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'.

In another question, Harry revealed that the three guests – dead or alive – that he would invite to a dinner party were Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury.

Harry also admitted to one fan that he would consider shaving his trademark curly hair off in the future for charity.

Meanwhile, One Direction are set to release their debut album 'Up All Night' later this month.

Liam Gallagher's Toy Story

Liam Gallagher has got into the Christmas spirit early.

The one-time wildman, 39, blew £3,000 on games consoles, toy helicopters and remote control cars.

But none of it was for his kids. It was all for himself.

Our source in Manchester told us: “Liam left a toy store with loads of stuff and confessed: ‘I’m a big kid at heart, I enjoy boys’ toys, what can I say?’ He did say he’s planning to really treat his kids too though.”

We’re guessing Noel won’t be getting owt.

VIDEOS ONLYWORK IN THE US

Seven steps to a better life, courtesy of the erstwhile Oasis songwriter/ general badass, in Bigger Than the Sound.

Brothers and sisters, I know times are tough. I realize you may not have a job, savings, stability, direction, guidance, a significant other, a Kindle Fire or even hope, for that matter, and that — to paraphrase Tariq Aziz — there may not be a light at the end of the tunnel, just more tunnel.

And yet, I am here today to tell you all things are possible. That health and happiness are within your grasp. That not only is Utopia real, but it exists on this temporal plane, and all are welcome. That no matter how dark things may seem, dawn is just over the horizon. I know all of this to be true, because I have seen the light. And the light's name is Noel Gallagher.

You have probably heard of him. He was the guy in Oasis who actually seemed to care about being in Oasis, or at least his musical legacy. He wrote some of the greatest songs of the late 20th century — "Live Forever," "Champagne Supernova," "Don't Look Back in Anger" and, of course, "Wonderwall" — and did so with such apparent ease that he became emboldened by his talents, famously buying a fleet of expensive cars (despite never learning how to drive) and a mansion with a swimming pool (despite never learning how to swim). He boozed and brawled, drugged and destroyed, made money fast and blew through it even faster, proclaimed his band's greatness at every possible opportunity and then actually backed it up, selling millions of albums (on both sides of the pond) and playing massive gigs in spots like Knebworth, Wembley, Maine Road and Loch Lomond.

In short, Gallagher was the last of a dying breed: Not just a rock star, but a true icon, a maverick, a tornado, a throwback, a sensation. He reached the heights of fame, built a house there, probably did blow off the kitchen counter, and then wrote a song about it. And yet, despite all that, he was never really an overly complicated guy either. He grew up poor and never forgot it, which is why he always worked hard (even when his brother didn't want to: witness Oasis' truly epic 1996 "Unplugged" fiasco, where Noel sang all the leads because Liam claimed he had a sore throat, only to spend the entirety of the show smoking cigarettes in the balcony), why he appreciated nothing quite so much as the simplicity of a really killer chorus and, yes, why he enjoyed everything he had achieved. If you once worked construction, you tend to enjoy fast cars and fine art just a little more, it would seem.

And sure, you could argue that perhaps Gallagher lost a bit of his luster in Oasis' later years (though Dig Out Your Soul is pretty good), but he'll freely admit that was due mainly to his various excesses, mostly of the cocaine variety. The fact remains that he is still a total legend, a complete badass and, yes, perhaps even a guru of sorts. And here's why I say that.

Last week, I got the chance to sit down with Gallagher for the first time (I was supposed to interview Oasis in 2008, but that chat was canceled when the band went "missing"), to talk about his really, genuinely pretty great solo debut, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (it is definitely better than Heathen Chemistry, not to mention his brother Liam's post-Oasis bow, Different Gear, Still Speeding too). What followed was 30 minutes of positively life-altering material, a free-ranging conversation from minute one, since it became pretty clear Noel didn't really want to talk about High Flying Birds a whole lot. Instead, he pontificated about the importance of punctuality, the suckiness of Nickelback, the excellence of fine drugs, and how truly great it is to be a hugely successful rock star. He was hilarious, unapologetic, unhinged and, though sort of sleepy — our interview happened at 10:30 a.m. — incredibly cool, even if he wasn't trying to be. There is not a man on earth he fears, nary a challenge he will not accept, especially since he's accomplished pretty much everything already.

And that got me thinking: Wouldn't life be better (or at least easier) if we all asked ourselves "What Would Noel Do?" Couldn't our wildest dreams be realized if we were all just a little more cocksure, exuded a quiet confidence and wore black leather jackets? What if we all harnessed the power of our inner Gallaghers (not this one) and, in turn, shifted that power outward? What could possibly stop us if we realized, on some level, that we are all indestructible, unstoppable and that we could, in fact, live forever?

Simply put, the world needs more Noel Gallaghers. Especially now. And so today, based solely on his actual quotes from my interview with him, I am presenting "The Noel Gallagher Life Management Plan," a seven-step process to better your own miserable existence. Read his teachings, ingest them, and then begin the first day of the rest of your life. He may not realize it, but Noel is onto something here, something that can benefit the whole of mankind. Unhappy? Unfulfilled? You certainly don't have to be — at least not anymore. Thanks to Noel Gallagher. Namaste.

Step One: Be Comfortable With Your Greatness
"It's great to be in the music game. What problems could you possibly have? If you come from where I come from, doing what I do now, I'm living the dream. I've got no complaints on any of the scores. The only problems are internal problems, problems with you as a person. What's problematic about playing stadiums and driving around in private jets and drinking champagne at 8 o'clock in the morning? What's wrong with that? I haven't got a problem with that. I can't fathom why people would."

Step Two: Yet Remain Humble
"To make art is not about working hard. You follow your instincts and you get your inspiration from wherever it comes from, and you try to make it the best that it can be. There's no formula to it. ... There's nothing to say the more time you spend in the studio, it will be better; it doesn't work like that. I've spent weeks on songs in the studio and they've been absolute rubbish. And I've spent 15 to 20 minutes recording a song and it's been hailed as a classic. ... You've just got to trust your instincts and realize that you can't please all the people all the time. You've got to please yourself ultimately in the end."

Step Three: Be Punctual, But Never Too Punctual
"There's no reason, ever, to be late. Or early. I've got a friend of mine back in England who, when I say to him, 'Meet me at mine at 2,' he says, 'I'll get there at half one.' No, get here at 2. Not five to or five past; get here at 2. I apologize for being 30 minutes early [for the MTV interview]; it would annoy me if you were 30 minutes early for me. I would make you wait outside for 30 minutes. I run a tight ship."

[I inform him that New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has a longstanding policy that if a player is on time for a meeting, he is actually "five minutes late."]

"That's nonsense. If you're on time, you're on time. Who is this guy again? [I inform him again, and point out that Coughlin has, in fact, won a Super Bowl.] Has he played Knebworth? No. If you're on time, you're on time. If you're five minutes late, the bus is gone. Sorry."

Step Four: Don't Make Promises You Can't Keep
[After asking him what fans can expect on his 2012 High Flying Birds Tour, which kicks off March 28 in Washington, D.C.] "I'll speak to you directly. Don't come expecting to see anything; there's nothing to see. All I have is the music. If the music is what you want, come along! Buy a T-shirt and a badge. But if you're coming to see anything, it's not the gig for you. Go and see someone else. I know I'm not selling it very well, but those are the facts."

Step Five: State Your Opinions Freely and Willingly
[I ask Gallagher about his next album, a black-light odyssey he's cooking up with Amorphous Androgynous, a.k.a. electronic duo the Future Sounds of London.] "I know drugs are illegal, but it would be handy to take some mushrooms and listen to it. No question. Drugs are bad, by the way, and they are illegal; I'm just pointing that out. These are not the views of MTV or MTV News. These are not even my views. This is just a fact: Some music is meant to be listened to on drugs."

Step Six: Make Outrageous Demands Because You Deserve Them
"They're real strings [on the album]; not Mellotron. That's a 24-piece female string section. I insisted on it. Girls play different from boys, you see. They sound sexier. It's an amazing thing. Now, a brass section would have to be all guys, because they blow harder. I would insist on a female string section, because strings are supposed to be sexy."

Step Seven: Always Remember Who Your True Friends Are, Yet Be Unafraid to Cut Them Loose for Seemingly Innocuous Reasons
[I ask his opinions on Twitter and Facebook.] "I don't need a million friends. I've got six friends, and I'm f---ing trying to get rid of one of those. I've got one too many, because I can't count them all on one hand. That f---er's got to go, because I don't like his missus. She's an idiot and all. He's not aware of it, but he will be when he doesn't receive a Christmas card."

Noel Gallagher: 'I'm Not Desperate At All To Reform Oasis'

Noel Gallagher has rubbished claims by his brother Liam Gallagher that he is desperate to reform Oasis – although he did hint he could change his mind if he needed the money.

In an interview with MTV, the High Flying Birds man said that his original comments about the possibility of the Manchester legends reforming in 2015 for the 20th anniversary of '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' had been taken out of context.

For the past several weeks, both Liam and Noel have publicly sparred over the prospect of an Oasis reunion, with the Beady Eye frontman revealing he would eventually like to reunite with his older sibling, only for Noel to reject his offer of an olive branch.

Speaking to NME this week, Liam claimed that Noel was "desperate" to get Oasis back together, but Noel refuted his comments by insisting that his original offer to reform had been twisted by a journalist and went "all the way around the internet".

He went on to add: "And then it's like this mythical reunion is going to take place… It isn't going to take place. Do I look desperate? No. I'm not desperate at all".

However, the singer did joke that he might reconsider in the future depending on his financial situation, adding: "I will say this, though: if I need the money, I will do it. I don't need a lot of money, though, and here's hoping I won't anytime soon. No, I'm not desperate. My shit's not gone down the toilet yet."

Yesterday, Paul Weller hit out at bands who reformed purely for financial reasons and said he hoped he would never feel the need to reform The Jam.

Gary Barlow: 'I Can't See Noel Gallagher On The X Factor'

Gary Barlow has said that he could not see Noel Gallagher becoming a judge on The X Factor.

The ex-Oasis songwriter recently confirmed that he had been approached by Simon Cowell to fill the "alpha male" head judge role on the show.

Gallagher admitted that his daughter has not forgiven him for turning down the position after he told Cowell that "he didn't really want me on there".

Asked about the approach, Cowell's eventual replacement Barlow told The Big Issue: "I don't know about [Noel being a good judge]... It's a big commitment.

"If you're going to get involved with something like this you've got to be prepared to give a lot of time and effort to it… I can't see him doing it somehow."

Of suggestions by some, including Gallagher, that the 16-year-olds on the show are too young, Barlow countered: "It's a massive opportunity. I think you've got to want it this bad. In fact, my criticism is, some of them should want it more than they do.

"The pop world is a bit like fashion. It moves very quickly. What happens with some people is, they earn a bit of money and they think, 'I'm all right now, and I can't be arsed with all the hard work anymore'."

Regarding the media attention for The X Factor, Barlow said: "The press stuff is just... actually quite funny. It's so wrong and so untrue it becomes funny. It's a bit of a circus, the whole thing.

"It's kind of part and parcel of the whole show so you learn to live with it. I don't read newspapers but you hear the whispers and you think, 'Jesus Christ, what is happening... what is happening here?' The truth is it's probably keeping a lot of the papers going."

The Big Issue is sold by homeless and vulnerably housed vendors for £2. £1 of the cover price goes directly to the vendor.

The full Gary Barlow interview features in this week's issue.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Ten

Yes droogs.

Just a quick one. Not much to report as, well, nothing's happened.

I just want to share with you something that happened to me in a clothes shop today in NYC.

So… I'm out shopping. Not looking for anything in particular. Just killing time. Enjoying the weather. (Very pleasant. Almost spring-like.)

I'm in some shop or other not showing much interest in the merchandise and the usual scenario starts to unfold. You know the one?

Shop assistant: "Hi… Can I help you with anything today?"

Me: "Erm… No thanks… I'm just looking."

(SO FAR, SO GOOD.)

Shop assistant: “Are you looking for anything in particular… A jacket? Some jeans? A sweater?”

Me: "… No thanks… I'm just looking."

Shop assistant: "How about these sneakers? These are really cool."

Me: "………" (Just a little stare.)

Shop assistant: "What size are you?"

Me: "40, if you must know."

Shop assistant: "Great, I'll go get you a pair."

Now at this point I would ordinarily wait 'til this idiot had wafted behind the curtain and leg it, but for some unknown reason I sat on a little leather stool and waited… and waited.

Just as I'm about to walk out he re-appears box in hand.

Shop assistant: "Here you go."

Me: "Thanks."

So, as luck would have it, they were too big. (Are my bastard feet shrinking now??)

Me: "Sorry mate, they're too big."

Shop assistant: "What? Really? The 40 is too big? Really?"

Me: "Really."

Then - with a straight face (and I'm not joking) - he said this...

"You know… Baggy shoes are very popular right now."

!!!!!!!!!!!

Me: "………" (Just a little stare.)

UN-FUCKIN-BELIEVABLE.

Now… I'm gonna be out of the game until Wednesday / Thursday. Some of my mates are in town and it's probably gonna get pretty messy.

In a bit.

GD.
