Amorphous Androgynous
Noel Gallagher
Oasis

On August 28, 2009, Noel Gallagher walked away from according to him “one of the best bands ever.” Although the decision the leave Oasis didn’t shock many, to me, I was actually looking forward to see what the brothers Gallagher would do to continue this fabled sibling musical storyline. Liam struck first in the post-Oasis years with Beady Eye, which is Oasis without Noel. Today, Noel unleashes the album I have been living with non-stop since he and I sat down for a 30 minute chat on a rainy day in our New York City studios.
To try and ask Noel Gallagher everything that I would want to about his years of making music can’t be done in 30 minutes. The main focus was his new project Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, an album that has the theme of love and hope all the way through it. Of course, as you’ll see and hear, as we dipped into the past a little bit, and went full-blitz with the new release and the one on the way! Look for his collaboration with the psychedelic duo Amorphous Androgynous to hit next year. (Amorphous Androgynous is Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans who were the guys behind The Future Sound Of London.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is co-produced along with Dave Sardy who worked with Noel on the last two Oasis studio albums. Noel calls Dave “the most positive person I have ever worked with, he has no fear”. Noel commented on how when it turned the album over to Dave, it was quite British sounding. Dave got his hands on it and gave it “American girth.” It’s hard to pin down a favorite on this record, it’s that good! When I told Noel that the album’s opening track “Everybody’s On The Run” is my favorite, and just might be my favorite song of the year, he said “yes, that song is great, and I admire your taste.” As for him picking one favorite, he went with “AKA… What a Life!” saying it’s not like anything he’s done before.
Oasis-related questions and a few personal-related questions are next. Will there be a 20 year celebration in any way for the first two Oasis albums? Did Noel regret walking away from Oasis on “that” night in Paris. (Listen and watch him answer this, and see if you think like I think. Perhaps Oasis might still be together if he went about it a different way?). Does he have any personal regrets? Has he ever gone to see an Oasis cover band? What is his proudest achievement?

Given all the recent coverage of his run-in with Katie Holmes and various, life-altering ways, you may be unaware that Noel Gallagher, late of Oasis, has just released his first proper solo album, a rock-solid collection of tunes that run the gamut from psych-tinged burners ("[I Wanna Live in a Dream in My] Record Machine") to straight-ahead churners ("Everybody's on the Run"), with stops at just about every point in between.
VIDEO ONLY WORKS IN THE US
He's called the disc Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, a nod to both the first Fleetwood Mac album and a Jefferson Airplane song of (roughly) the same name, and so far, things are soaring. It's been greeted with glowing reviews, most of which seem to harp on the fact that the album represents "his best tunes in 15 years." Of course, in typical Gallagher fashion, he's not paying attention to any of it.
"I didn't read any of the reviews and think, 'Well, these people think I've been writing crap songs for the last 15 years.' I don't think of things like that," he told MTV News. "When I'm in the studio, I'm literally taking it song by song and then, you know, you get to the end of it. I got to say though, during the mixing of it, as each track was being finished, I was thinking, 'This does sound really good. ...'
"But I wouldn't like to compare it to anything Oasis did, because that's not fair," he continued. "We were a band and I was writing songs for someone else to sing, so you can't really compare the two. It's just a good record, what can I say?"
Humility was never his strong suit. Neither, apparently, was guitar playing. Because even though he slung the ax loud and often in Oasis, he never really considered himself to be a guitar player. Which is why, on High Flying Birds, he limited the showing off — there are, by unofficial count, just two solos on the whole album — and focused instead on doing what he loves best: writing killer tunes.
"I guess when guitarists make solo records, there's usually a lot of showing off. But I've been trying to convince for 20 years that I'm not a guitarist, I'm a songwriter. I played lead guitar in the band because everybody else, in the early days, was useless, so that kind of fell to me," he laughed. "But it's not something I ever thought I would put myself up there with John Squire or Johnny Marr or all those great British guitarists, that's not my thing. My thing was songwriting. I only noticed [the lack of solos] when a friend of mine was listening to the finished version, and it got to track six and he went, 'You know, that's the first guitar solo,' and I was like, 'Wow, someone's got an easy gig, doesn't he?' "
And since there's not going to be an Oasis reunion in the cards anytime soon, Gallagher is focused on promoting Birds both here and abroad. He's playing on just about every continent over the next six months and seems quite content to be doing nothing else. Especially attempting to figure out the machinations of the music industry of 2011 ... a plan he abandoned long ago, thanks in no small part to his daughter.
"She is into music, she's never mentioned Justin Bieber to me ... Lady Gaga's her thing, and Rihanna and, is it, Miley Cyrus? All that kind of thing," he said. "It's kind of a rule, she's got to like Oasis and her old fella, so she's into that side of it. But her teenage rock years will come [and], no doubt, she'll be into f---ing Nickelback as well."

Noel Gallagher

In the summer of 2009, backstage before headlining V-Festival in France, Oasis broke up. In a bitter fight between the band's two brothers, Liam and Noel Gallagher, Noel left the band and quit. Though this had happened before, this time he meant it. The brothers have not spoken to each other since, but they have scolded each other in the press and listened to each other's music and bashed it. Two years after the bitter Oasis split, Liam Gallagher, along with the remaining members of Oasis, formed Beady Eye. The band released their debut in June, Different Gear, Still Speeding to roaring approval and sold-out every show they played around the world. Beady Eye took the roaring balls-to-the-wall approach to their style of rock and roll and proved Liam can manage on his own. Now, months later, Noel has his say.
In the much hyped debut of Oasis' former songwriter and creator, Noel Gallagher released his solo debut, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and the album proves one thing -- Liam is the rock star, but Noel is the musician. Noel's debut is crafted of beautiful layers and brilliant lyrics; in fact, it is some of his best work in years. The two brothers are now the Romulus and Remus of rock and roll and we all know how that story ended.
As hyped as Noel's solo debut was, so was his sold-out small US tour. Taking the stage at 9pm in the second of two sold-out gigs at the Beacon Theater, Noel went to work. Opening with the Oasis B-Side "(It's Good) to be Free," a fitting opening and clear jab at his former job, he then went into the deep Oasis track "Mucky Fingers." Noel grabbed the crowds' attention straight away. Switching guitars the way George Clooney switches girlfriends, Noel sonically battered the audience with his opening numbers that eventually went into his new solo work with "Everybody's On the Run," and "Dream On." It would take a few songs before he finally addressed the crowd and his banter to the audience was thanks in part to a young girl in the audience who asked for a guitar pick. Noel obliged and walked over to the tween and handed her a pick. "There is a lot of T-shirt buying in that kid!" Noel joked. As he continued onto his solo work, Noel and his High Flying Birds sounded perfect and backed by a simple yet effective light show, they were delivering everything fans hoped. The highlight of the main set would come when Noel grabbed an acoustic guitar and, backed by his pianist and former Oasis touring member, Mike Rowe, performed a very alternative version of his breakthrough hit "Wonderwall," while the crowd sang and cheered along. It was then into an acoustic and stripped down version of "Supersonic" that really had everyone at their feet. While the set altered between his solo materials, Oasis B-sides, deep cuts and hits, Noel was in top form. An hour and fifteen minutes later, the first set, which seemed to go by like a blur, was done.
"Thank you for having me, this venue is beautiful. F*ck Madison Square Gardens, this is a great place!" Noel said as he returned to the stage for an amazing three song encore that was full of Oasis tunes. Closing with "Don't Look Back in Anger" and the crowd ripping the seat cushions off the chairs and chanting along like it was a European soccer (football) match, Noel smiled from ear to ear. His time has come. He realizes that he has made songs that have changed people's lives and that he knows how to make the perfect pop-rock song, no matter what band he is in. With all the drama that his previous outfit had, he cannot look back in anger -- it built who he is now.
