Noel Gallagher On Being An Independent Artist

Noel Gallagher reckons he makes less money and wins fewer awards as an independent artist with his band High Flying Birds then he did when he was signed to a record label.

But according to the co-founder of Britpop band Oasis, he's enjoying working as an independent artist.

With Oasis, who signed to Creation Records in the UK and had a worldwide deal with Sony, Gallagher said he didn't like the people he had to deal with at the labels.

"I enjoy not working with people in record labels ... it's nice to get away from that mob," Gallagher said on The Project on Tuesday night.

The British musician was speaking from Byron Bay where he performed over the weekend at Bluesfest.

Last year, his album Chasing Yesterday with his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds reached number one in the UK, but in typical sardonic fashion he explained how he doesn't make much money or get many accolades for his music now.

"I enjoy the lack of money that I make. I enjoy the lack of record sales. I also enjoy the lack of recognition and the lack of awards that I receive because quite frankly my mantelpiece was chokka-block with the f*****g things, it's nice to take a backseat," he said.

By the time they split in 2009, Oasis had sold about 70 million records - they had also won a total of 37 awards for their music, including Brits, MTV Europe Music Awards and NME Awards.

When the band first broke onto the scene in the 1990s they were purveyors of the Britpop genre along with bands such as Blur and Pulp. It was a genre inspired by retro pop bands such as The Beatles and comprised of standard rock group instrumentation - guitars, drums and lead singer.

In the current production-led climate, it could be difficult to see where Oasis would fit in. Their closest comparison today might be Coldplay who work with dance producers such as Avicii, or The Arctic Monkeys who aren't afraid to mix it up with some psychedelic influences.

However, Gallagher reckons there would still be a place for them musically.

"There'd be some major differences the way the music business is - the music will remain timeless so I think it'd be the same but we'd probably have worse clothes and less of a drug habit, probably," he said.

While he's been performing in Australia with his solo project, he still plays Oasis hits on stage.

"I give the people what they want as long as I can play what I want, everybody goes home happy," he said.

Gallagher has three more gigs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth before he flies out for a European and US tour that brings him right up until the end of August.

He's still playing gigs after more than 20 years in the music business, and he knows that's something to be grateful for, regardless of what material from what period of his career he's performing.

"To see people reacting to new songs is great and all the old stuff is great and I'm just glad to be still doing it at my age quite frankly," he said.

Noel Gallagher On Axl Rose Joining ACDC

Photos have emerged of Axl Rose leaving AC/DC’s rehearsal space making it look even more likely that he’ll replace Brian Johnson as the band’s frontman, but it’s not the decision that Noel Gallagher would’ve made.

Gallagher played Bluesfest over the weekend with his band Noel Gallager’s High Flying Birds and has also been playing sideshows. Triple M spoke to the ever-outspoken Gallagher backstage at his gig in Sydney where he offered up his opinion on Rose potentially joining the legendary Aussie band.

“Wrong, that’s wrong,” Gallagher told host Matthew Johns before he was prodded about what would happen if brother Liam Gallagher asked to join his band.

“It would never happen would it,” he said.

“What would I say to him? I’d say behave yourself mate.”

Gallagher has in the past had some very colourful things to say about his brother, so that is probably a tame response by comparison. Recently, he shut down rumours of an Oasis reunion on the South American leg of Lollapalooza telling The Mirror, “Liam is a very angry man still.”

“He tends to make the easiest things really difficult,” he said.

Despite the fact that Liam probably wouldn’t be up for it, Noel thinks that he could tour the songs without Liam one day,

“I could see a day where, myself, I could do shows with just Oasis songs,” he said.

“I might think about it. There might come a day, one day, where it might seem like a good idea, but I have so much I want to do on my own.”

Noel has been playing as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds since 2011 while Liam formed Beady Eye in the same year. The latter band broke up at the end of 2014.

Paul Bigun Ashbee Wants Noel Gallagher To End His Rift With Brother Liam

The man who introduced the band Oasis to each other is calling on Noel Gallagher to heal the rift with his brother Liam and put the band back together.

Paul ‘Bigun’ Ashbee believes that his pal Liam has been let down by Noel. And he thinks public criticism of Liam has been unfair in contrast to the positive reception of Noel’s music since he quit the band in 2009.

He believes Liam is so closely linked with the band, fans are unable to accept the Manchester rock legend pursuing anything else. So he is calling on singer-songwriter Noel, who went on to form Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, to do the right thing by “our kid” and put him back in the spotlight with Oasis.

Paul said: “Poor Liam is suffering. Because until Noel says ‘Oasis is getting back together‘ he is backed into a corner waiting.

“Liam has been hammered for being himself. If Noel has any love for Liam he has to (put Oasis back together).

“Liam needs that stage but he has been left in limbo.

“He should go to his little brother and say ‘alright our kid. Let’s give the world what they want.’”

Paul has known Liam, whose post-Oasis outfit Beady Eye disbanded in 2014, for 30 years.

He employed him as a car valet and made rock and roll history by introducing the singer to his childhood friend Bonehead, a guitarist with the band The Rain which later became Oasis. After Noel later joined the band they became international stars.

This summer football agent Paul will release a tell-all book about Oasis called Giving it the Bigun, Oasis, Football, Manchester and Me.

Oasis Dominate 'Best British Song Of All Time' Chart

Wonderwall by Oasis has been named as the Best British Song Of All Time in a special Radio X poll.

Over 50,000 votes were cast in the Top 100 countdown, which was revealed on Radio X this Easter Monday (28 March).

Speaking exclusively to Radio X, Noel Gallagher said: “What can I say? The people have spoken.”

He joked: “The fact that there wasn’t one single Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds song in the top 20 makes think the whole thing is a mockery of an unreliable sham!

“Saying that though I'm thrilled. Thanks for voting. ONWARDS.”

Oasis held FOUR places out of the Top 5 in the chart, with the 1995 classic Wonderwall coming out on top. It was followed by Don’t Look Back In Anger (2), Champagne Supernova (3) and Live Forever (4).

I Am The Resurrection, the classic Stone Roses track from 1989’s self-title debut album, brought up the rear at Number 5.

Liam Gallagher himself chose Jumping Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones as his top British song - but the track didn't make our final cut.
