Johnny Marr On Working With Noel Gallagher

Taken from a recent interview with Johnny Marr read the full article here.

You also played on Noel Gallagher’s “Who Built the Moon” this past November. Do you adapt your playing to a specific song, album or artist, or do you strive to do the opposite?

Noel was quite surprised because I’ve played on a few of his records now and he was expecting to send me the track. I’ve done so many sessions now that I’ve learned that I’m better when I react to the track straight away. He was surprised when I told him not to send me the track. I didn’t want to hear it before I played. It’s a bit like walking on the wire, you’re asking to screw up. My first impression is usually the right way to go... I always try to do what’s appropriate to the record. But over the years I’ve learned people want me to sound like me. I try to react to the record within my sound. I’m comfortable now with the reality that people get me in there for a reason. I try to live up to that ad bring it whilst not showboating. That’s something that comes with maturity and confidence and being okay with who you are. I have to thank people like Pet Shop Boys for giving me the opportunity to play on so many of their songs and explore different kinds of pop music. I’m at that place in my career now where I’m not too shy about it. You should know it’s me playing.

Noel Gallagher On Manchester City, Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, The Champions League And More

Taken from Noel Gallagher's interview with talkSPORT listen tot he interview here.

On Jose Mourinho.

'He seems to be sinking at the minute and if he's asking for the press to give him more respect, then this is the start of him unravelling.

'When I was growing up and Liverpool were the best team in the 80s, you couldn't even envisage they would go 20-odd years without winning the league.

'In the 90s when United were winning three in a row and Champions Leagues, and doubles and trebles, you couldn't envisage United going 10 minutes without winning the league, but it does happen.

'Since [Alex] Ferguson left United, which was a great day for British football, I think it is all beginning to unravel now and I am just going to sit back and watch it with great pleasure.'

On Manchester United's plans in the transfer market.

'I think the difference between the two clubs is that City have bought incredibly well, even the squad players are amazing. United have just gone for expensive players.

'They went after [Alexis] Sanchez because City were after him, they went after Fred because City were after him, they went for [Paul] Pogba because everyone else was after him. There doesn't seem to be any plan there when they're buying players for the future and that is a big difference.

'Nobody was after Bernardo Silva, no one was after [Leroy] Sane. People laughed when we bought Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker. There are people at our club, the committee who decides on the players, they're bordering on as big a geniuses as Pep [Guardiola].'

On Manchester City looking 'even better' this season.

'I went to the first game against Arsenal and I actually thought they looked better than last season in some respects. With the team being so young with Sterling, [John] Stones and Sane they're only going to get better.

'The only difference between these two seasons is last season we got the breaks along the way, although saying that I've just been watching the Man City documentary and I forgot how many injuries we had.

'I think it'll be a bit of grind this season because I don't think we'll get all our own stuff going our way again, but I think we look better.'

On Manchester City and Liverpool both being  'well matched'

'I think the two respective teams's starting XI are pretty well matched now but our bench gives us the edge.

'I looked at ours against Arsenal and it was absurd. There was £200million worth of players on the bench.

'Any team finishing above us is going to have to have a perfect season, not a great season, a perfect season because there are a lot of points to make up.

On why the Champions League is not 'an obsession' for Manchester City.

'I think I was listening to people saying that the Champions League will become an obsession for the club, but I can assure you it hasn't. For the fans, it's all about the league.

'I would rather be better than Chelsea, Tottenham, United and Liverpool than Real Madrid or Barcelona. We haven't won the league enough yet to be training our sights to the Champions League.'
