This Feeling By The Sea - A New Festival Headlined By The Lathums And Red Rum Club

The rock ‘n’ roll club night, record label and tastemakers This Feeling and Bridlington Spa, the largest indoor venue on the Yorkshire coast are proud to announce details of their biggest festival event to date. This Feeling By The Sea will bring an enviable array of leading guitar bands and next wave talents to Bridlington Spa on August 18th and 19th, led by headliners The Lathums and Red Rum Club.

This Feeling’s George Holmes commented, “We're buzzing to be hosting a huge summer party at Bridlington Spa in the iconic 'Royal Hall'. Having played host to the likes of The Rolling Stones in the ‘60s to Oasis in the ‘00s, it's time for the next generation of rock ‘n’ roll stars to take the stage.”

Mark Lonsdale, General Manager, Bridlington Spa said, “We’re delighted to be partnering with This Feeling in bringing this new annual weekend festival to the venue and town. Bridlington Spa is the home of live music on the Yorkshire coast, and we’re excited to be able to provide a platform for new and emerging bands.  Over the two days, you will be able to see 14 bands, performing to a potential capacity 3,800 crowd, this is one not to be missed!”

Friday night headliners Red Rum Club are the ideal band to close a seaside summer show, their sun-kissed indie-pop big on bright, exuberant melody and given a joyous mariachi-tinged twist courtesy of trumpeter Joe Corby - as heard on their critically acclaimed Top 40 album ‘How To Steal The World’.

This Feeling By The Sea’s Saturday night headliners are The Lathums, who cemented their status as one of the scene’s leading bands when their previous album ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’ shot straight to #1. They’re now set to supercharge their continued rise with their brand new album ‘From Nothing To A Little Bit More’, which was released on Friday and has been previewed by the singles ‘Say My Name’, ‘Turmoil’ and ‘Struggle’.

Red Rum Club commented, “Buzzing to be playing the big room in Bridlington Spa this summer for This Feeling. A great group of people who got behind us in the early days. We know we will be sharing a stage with the next up and comers of the UK music scene.”

The Lathums added, “It’s a pleasure to be invited to play Bridlington Spa, we can’t wait to play some new tunes from the album. We'll see you soon for a little dance.”

The Friday line-up will also feature belting rock ‘n’ roll from The K’s; anthemic local heroes The Feens; two This Feeling Records bands, a fresh take on stories ‘80s and ‘90s influences from Rosellas and the Supergrass-meets-Buzzcocks rush of Spangled; and storytelling indie-rock from Komparrison.

The Saturday bill will then be completed by the infectious entertaining The Lottery Winners; dreamy psychedelia from CVC; This Feeling Records’ next wave talents Overpass (who recently played with Inhaler) and Rolla (fresh from hitting arenas with Kasabian); plus high energy indie-poppers The Lilacs.

Bridlington Spa will provide a beautiful, historic home for This Feeling By The Sea. The bands will be performing in the magnificent 3800 capacity Art Deco Royal Hall. Located just a few steps away from the beach, the venue is also perfectly positioned for fans who would like to make the festival part of a long weekend away. It’s also a fitting choice as a venue as it represents a leap forward for several of the festival’s artists. Red Rum Club, The K’s, The Feens, Spangled and The Lottery Winners are all stepping up to the significantly larger Royal Hall, having previously performed at Bridlington Spa’s 250 capacity new music room Sessions.

Tickets are on sale now and priced at £25 for Friday, £30 for Saturday, or £50 for the weekend.

More details here.

This Feeling By The Sea is the latest project from the new music champions, whose support has helped the likes of Blossoms, Catfish and The Bottlemen, Gerry Cinnamon, The Struts and The Lathums on their way to greatness. In addition to their record label and club nights, This Feeling have also curated stages at festivals including Isle of Wight, Truck and Y Not?, presented the Rewired Festival, and released several editions of their annual ‘Big In…’ vinyl compilation of the best new bands around.

New GLOK EP And UK Tour Dates Are On Sale Now

Three stunning remixes from Pattern Recognition, the debut album proper (and UK album dance chart #1) from GLOK, the electronic alter ego of Andy Bell from shoegaze pioneers Ride. The remixes were completed by different artists at different times, but these kindred spirits have produced a trio of tracks that come together with a righteous symbiosis that Lord Sabre himself would have revelled in.

First up, Sean Johnston (A Love from Outer Space) and Duncan Gray (Tici Taci), in their Hardway Bros meets Monkton Uptown guise, deliver a monstrous dub version of That Time of Night. While the original was a luxurious electro groover, this remix will make speaker stacks crumble to dust with its immense bassline and seismic effects, while Shiarra’s intoned vocals seem to come at you from another dimension entirely.

Next up, Richard Sen returns to GLOK remixing duty, tasked once again with turning one of Andy’s sprawling 20-minute album openers (he did the job on Dissident last time out) into a relatively concise number perfect for the nation’s dancefloors and rave tents. Richard never disappoints and he repeats the trick by taking Dirty Hugs to the Krautrock-disco, setting some of Andy’s delicious guitar licks over a propulsive, hypnotic groove.

Last but by no means least Tom Sharkett, guitarist with Manchester synthpoppers WH Lung, has channeled the ALFOS chug into his throbbing re-version of album closer Invocation. Tom has recently been signed to Optimo Music and his remix would easily slot into one of Johnny and Keith’s epic, eclectic DJ sets.

Cigarettes & Alcohol is a song by Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It was the fourth single to be released from their debut album Definitely Maybe, and their second to enter the UK Top Ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at number seven, eventually spending thirty five weeks on the charts, re-entering the Top 75 on several occasions until 1997.

Whereas earlier singles Supersonic and Shakermaker had used psychedelic imagery, and Live Forever used softer chords and tender lyrics, Cigarettes & Alcohol was the first real taste, among their singles, of the wilder attitude that Oasis appeared to be promoting. The song showcases the appeal of cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and partying as a remedy to the banality of working class life.

Lyrics such as "Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for" tapped into the mood of British working class youth in the mid-1990s. However, the song does not set out to hold up these minor releases of work-a-day life as some ideal. They are, rather, a compromise – "You could wait for a lifetime," they sing, "to spend your days in the sunshine/(so) you might as well do the white line".

Upon first hearing the song, the man who discovered the band, Alan McGee, claimed that the song was one of the greatest social statements anyone had made in the past twenty five years, such was his view on the song.

Another notable element of this song is Liam's unique pronunciation of many of the words. Most rhymes end in "-tion," and Liam draws these out into "-sheeyion," for almost every line. Noel has said that he writes many lyrics to fit Liam's extremely unique vocal style.

The song was one of the first cases when Oasis was accused of musical plagiarism, a reputation of the band that would later grow. The main riff of the song is supposedly "borrowed" from Get It On (Bang a Gong) by T-Rex and also bears a similarity to the opening of Humble Pie's cover of C'Mon Everybody from the album Smokin'.

Rod Stewart covered the song on his 1998 album When We Were The New Boys.

The song is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop The Clocks.

Contrary to the sleevenotes, which claimed it was recorded at the Glasgow Cathouse in June 1994, I Am The Walrus was actually recorded at a soundcheck for a gig at the Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland on February 6th 1994, as part of a Sony Music seminar. The reason why this wasn't mentioned on the original sleeve notes was because Noel thought mentioning the fact that it was recorded at a corporate event would look bad. The crowd noises at the beginning and end of the track are from a Faces bootleg of Noel's.

All three B-sides were featured on The Masterplan, although I Am The Walrus and Listen Up both appear as edited versions.

The Father Ted episode Cigarettes and Alcohol and Rollerblading is named after this song.

Don't Go Away is a song by Oasis from their third album Be Here Now written by Noel Gallagher. The song was released as a single in Japan.

The song, according to Noel, is about losing someone close and it was written when his mother, Peggy, was suspected of having cancer. His mother did not have cancer, but the experience gave Noel the idea to write something "quite bleak. The line "Cold and frosty morning" appears on The Kinks track Dead End Street.

Liam Gallagher claims to have cried whilst recording the song, as a result of dwelling on "a certain thing". He said, in a 1997 interview, "I just thought 'f*ck that, I can't be singing this song' and I had to go away and sort myself out". Listening back to the song he admits to being very proud of his vocal performance.

Interview

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the song: "It's a very sad song about not wanting to lose someone you're close to. The middle eight I made up on the spot.I never had that lyric until the day we recorded it: 'Me and you, what's going on?/ All we seem to know is how to show/ The feelings that are wrong.' It's after a row. Quite bleak."

"We put Burt Bacharach horns on because he was the master of break-up songs. I did all the string arrangements. I tried to keep them as simple as possible. I like the way Marc Bolan used them on Children Of The Revolution. People do remember string parts as separate hooklines, you know. You just don't want to use them slushily."

Artwork

The cover of the single features the old Liverpool Speke Airport building.

The airport is famous as the scene thousands of hysterical fans greeting The Beatles on their return to Liverpool at the height of Beatlemania. Derelict at the time, it has now been turned into an exclusive hotel managed by Marriott.

B-Sides

The live version of Cigarettes & Alcohol was recorded on December 14th 1997 at the G-MEX Exhibition Centre in Oasis' home town of Manchester.

Sad Song originally appeared as a bonus track on the vinyl release of the first Oasis album, Definitely Maybe. It also appeared on the Japanese CD edition of Definitely Maybe.

The Warchild version of Fade Away is from the HELP album recorded in September 1995.
