Noel Gallagher On His Children, His Childhood, His Mam, Ireland And More

Noel Gallagher says fatherhood has been one of the greatest joys of his life, despite having doubts about his ability to be a good dad.

His own childhood was marred by an abusive, alcoholic Irish father who beat him and was physically violent towards his mother, Peggy, before she left him.

Prior to the split, Noel and his older brother, Paul, were reportedly so scared of their Meath-born father, Tommy that they developed a stammer.

In an exclusive interview with the Sunday World, Noel, who turned 56 yesterday and is set to release a new album next Friday, says: “It [fatherhood] wasn’t one of the things in life I particularly thought I would be cut out for.

Noel Gallagher On His New Album, Oasis And More

Noel Gallagher, the former guitar player and singer-songwriter for the iconic rock band Oasis and current frontman for his eponymous rock group Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, is at peace. For the once-bad boy of Brit Pop, known as much for his altercations as hit songs, a sense of self-security has settled in. Truth be told, he’s something of a joy to talk to—calm, thoughtful, clear-headed.

And these same adjectives could be used to describe Gallagher and company’s new LP, Council Skies, which is set to drop on Friday (June 2). The new record showcases the artist’s knack for composition, tone, and magnetism. The titular single is like a blue sky and a wide-open highway forward. For the songwriter, age has brought wisdom and a sense of satisfaction.

“It was great to be just part of that whole thing; they do it on a different level to everybody else,” he muses, reminiscing about touring with Bono and co as the support act on their Joshua Tree tours in 2017 and 2019. “It reminded me of being in Oasis, that kind of level of stadiums and huge outdoor gigs.” He shrugs, nonchalant. “But it was great, I really enjoyed it. We had a great time as a band, as a matter of fact – a really fucking great time. We were off-stage at half-eight every night, and I think out of the entire tour, I only ever missed [watching] one U2 show – it was in Paris and I was too pissed from the night before.”

The High Flying Birds leader and former Oasis guitarist has very strong views on AI music. And the internet. And social media. And pretty much everything else

Noel Gallagher On Council Skies, An Acoustic Album And More

Below is an extract from an interview with Noel Gallagher from Record Collector who talks about his new High Flying Birds album Council Skies and future plans.

It's been six years since your last album. What kept you?

"I was flabbergasted when I realised that. I put out an album's worth of music on three EPs and a lot of touring went on, so there was plenty going on and time just slipped by. When you get to this age, time tends to accelerate. It doesn't fell like six years, whatever that feels like now".

What was the initial impetus for this album?

"Those EPs were all written in the studio and the idea was to make an album reacting against that. But that was in 2019, and of course the pandemic changed everything. I'd planned on taking 2020 off, but I started writing a year early. I ended up writing three albums of material. Council Skies is the most reflective songs, summarising a period when I was sitting around the house with an acoustic guitar, wondering what was going to happen to the world".

What's going to happen to the other new songs?

"When I delivered this record, I carried on going to the studio every day. I recorded four songs, before thinking "What am I doing?" This record isn't out yet. I'd be insane to make another one, so I took some time off. Still, I know what the next two records are now. This one is grand-sounding and strings-y , so the next one will be more intimate. The songs are heartbreaking, which lends itself to being acoustic. But I say, "I'm going to make an acoustic album next" every five years, and then a 98-piece orchestra arrives".

The new issue of Record Collector is out now.

Noel Gallagher On The Council Skies Album Cover

Noel Gallagher has spoken to Record Collector about what it was like setting his gear up on the old Maine Road turf for the High Flying Birds 'Council Skies' album cover.

He said "I wanted the artwork to be Manchester based, and Maine Road was obviously key to Oasis, as well as me being a City fan. I hadn't been to Maine Road since it was knocked down. When I drove up there, it all fell into place, as it's been turned into a council housing. I had to get permission from (Manchester Mayor) Andy Burnham for the shoot".

He added "When we were setting up the drumkit, the residents were going: You'd better not be making any f*cking noise!" Then I turn round, and it was : "No way! Are you doing a gig here today? "Sorry just a photoshoot..."

Noel Gallagher On The 30th Anniversary Of Definitely Maybe

Noel Gallagher has been questioned in the new issue of Record Collector on how will the 30th anniversary of Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe be celebrated next year.

He said "Obviously we'll have to reissue the album yet again. This time, there's more than the odd remastered song. The fans are going to flip the f*ck out. In fact, the rest of the band are going to flip out. No we're not going to get back together or any of that shit. But it's something really special".
