Supergrass On Oasis, Pulp, Blur And More

Taken from an interview with Supergrass for the NME that can be read here.

NME: So, there’s an Oasis reunion tour on the way…

Gaz “Oh is there? I hadn’t heard about that!”

NME: Yes indeed, keep it a secret. Anyway, Oasis are back, there’s reportedly a new Pulp record coming, Blur just had a big comeback last year. How do you feel about the hunger for bands of that era at the moment?

“It’s something I haven’t really worked out or thought about. Is it a post-pandemic thing of people looking for some comfort from something happy and familiar? The mid-90s were a wild time. For us, it was different to how it seemed. When you look back at the lad culture and messiness, we weren’t part of it nor did we really enjoy that side of it. In terms of the freedom we had to express ourselves, it was a magical time. The label backing us for six albums was crazy too. All that excitement is what I remember.

“Maybe people just want to hear something they love that meant a lot to them? I’m not really into nostalgia; I just think it’s important to mark a beautiful moment, and that was ‘I Should Coco’. Plus 30 years is a big one, and this could be the only time we get to do it.”

NME: And are we to assume you’ve not been asked to support Oasis?

“I can’t say anything about that!”

GLOK / Timothy Clerkin - Alliance

RIDE’s Andy Bell, recording under his electronic alter ego GLOK, and the producer and Insult to Injury label boss Timothy Clerkin have joined forces for Alliance, a brand new seven-track album released by Bytes on November 8. The collaboration finds Andy and Tim with their freak flags flying, working in a freewheeling environment where nothing was off limits, with influences ranging from Death in Vegas and Boards of Canada to James Holden and New Order.

The woozy ‘Empyrean’, which combines the analogue-decayed production of Boards of Canada and the ethereal vocals of ‘Xtal’ from Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92 with a fizzing behemoth of a synth line, is a fitting way to launch the album as it was the first track they worked on together. “It’s basically a Timothy Clerkin remix of a demo I sent him,” Andy explains. “I can’t get enough of it. To me, it’s one of the best tracks I’ve ever been involved with since I started making music.
