Oasis And Paul Weller Team Up Onstage

Noel Gallagher also covers The Beatles

Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller joined forces onstage at a charity gig in London tonight (November 2).

Gallagher, watched by his brother and bandmate Liam and backed by a two bandmates including Oasis bandmate Gem Archer, was joined by his buddy onstage at KOKO, at a show in aid of drugs charity Focus.

Together they performed Weller's 2005 hit single 'Come On/Let's Go' and 'Thick As Thieves', a classic by Weller's old band The Jam, from their 1979 album 'Setting Sons'.

Noel also covered his heroes' The Beatles' 1967 classic 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Earlier comedian Russell Brand had acted as MC, introducing opening act The Holloways, and then Dirty Pretty Things, standing in for Kasabian. Their guitarist Serge Pizzorno is suffering from laryngitis, or as Noel put it onstage later when dedicating 'Cast No Shadow' to his pal, "something pretentious like that".

DPT were joined by a guest of their own, The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess, who sang with Carl Barat on the singles 'Deadwood' and 'Bang Bang You're Dead' as well as his own group's 1997 hit 'North Country Boy'.

Gallagher, who was playing acoustically (with Archer on electric guitar), played a set including the Oasis classics 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Slide Away', and rarely performed B-sides such as 'Fade Away', 'Listen Up' and set opener '(It's Good) To Be Free'.

Noel's full set was:
'(It's Good) To Be Free'
'Talk Tonight'
'Fade Away'
'Cast No Shadow'
'The Importance Of Being Idle'
'Come On/Let's Go' (with Paul Weller)
'Thick As Thieves' (with Paul Weller)
'Wonderwall'
'Half The World Away'
'Slide Away'
'Strawberry Fields Forever'
'Don't Look Back In Anger'
'Married With Children'
'Listen Up'

On This Day In Oasis History....

The Masterplan is a compilation album by English rock band Oasis, comprising B-sides which never made it onto an album. It was first released on November 2nd 1998. The Masterplan reached #2 in the UK where it went platinum, and #51 in the United States. However, it did gain top spot in various charts around the world, going on to sell in excess of 2 million copies.

Noel Gallagher revealed in the Autumn of 2005 that a follow-up to The Masterplan could be released in 2006. He told NME magazine that "The only thing we’ve got that might be in the pipeline next year will be another B-sides album, all the B-sides from Standing… to this lot." Since an Oasis compilation is to be released in the form of the upcoming Stop the Clocks album, the future of a follow-up to The Masterplan is uncertain.

Track listing

01. Acquiesce
02. Underneath The Sky
03. Talk Tonight
04. Going Nowhere
05. Fade Away
06. The Swamp Song
07. I Am The Walrus (Live)
08. Listen Up
09. Rockin' Chair
10. Half The World Away
11. (It's Good) To Be Free
12. Stay Young
13. Headshrinker
14. The Masterplan

Miscellanea

The album was originally meant to be only released in areas such as the United States, where it was only possible to find the tracks on European import singles which can be very expensive.

The versions of "Listen Up" and "I Am the Walrus" are edits of their original releases on the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" single. "Listen Up" has 8 bars edited out during the guitar solo (4:3–4:39). "I Am the Walrus", with a fade-out, finishes at 6:25, whereas the original runs fully to a natural conclusion at 8:14.

"I Am the Walrus" was given its correct recording location and date on the sleevenotes. On its original release on the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" single, the location listed was the Glasgow Cathouse, in June 1994. However, in promotional interviews for The Masterplan, Noel revealed that it was actually recorded at the soundcheck for a gig at a Sony Music seminar at Gleneagles, Scotland, in February 1994. He said the credit was changed because he thought "recorded at a Sony seminar" would "look shit".

Chris Griffiths was given a co-writing credit for "Rockin' Chair". On its original release on the "Roll with It" single in 1995, Noel Gallagher was credited as the sole songwriter.

"Acquiesce" was released as a radio single in the United States, and a promotional video was created for this purpose. It consisted of a live performance of the song from Manchester's G-MEX, recorded on December 14, 1997, and various bits of behind-the-scenes footage of the band on tour. For the video, both Liam's and Noel's vocal tracks were overdubbed over the originals recorded live in Manchester.

All of the B-Sides from the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Some Might Say" singles appear on this album.

New Interview With Liam Gallagher

Hi Liam, how are you?
Thanks man, I’m sitting in my office in London.

First of all, congratulations to your Q Award.
Yeah man.

Is doing promo for this record different than for the other albums?
Well, not really. We’re not doing a lot of promo for this one. The music speaks for itself. We’re pretty proud of that record.

So you don’t feel kind of urged to do this interview?
No man.

Are you happy with how the album came out?
Yes, I’m pretty proud, it’s an important one. And all the songs are important. But it’s a pity that 'Rockin’ Chair' is not on it.

Please tell me about how you compiled the album.
Well, Noel came up with a list and it was pretty much decided. I wanted to put 'Rockin’ Chair' on it but I didn’t want to argue. They’re all important anyway. And they’re all great. My favourite? Maybe 'Songbird' because it is my song. (laughs)

Is there a hidden track?
Nah, I don’t think so but I don’t know anyway.

What does the title mean for you? 'Stop The Clocks' ?
It’s the end of a certain Oasis era and the time for a new beginning and also time to move on. It’s the last album with SonyBMG.

What about the cover by Peter Blake?
For me, it’s just a cover. Nice colours and nice stuff in it.

You never wanted to release a best-of album until Oasis would call it a day.
Of course, I’d rather be going to the studio and be talking to you about a new record. It’s better than to talk about old songs. It’s easy to put out a best-of. The label would have it done anyway so we thought we might join them instead of them releasing a singles collection.

So you don’t think that you’re going to sign a deal with a major label again?
That’s what we’re talking about right now. I don’t give a damn shit about all that business stuff. For me it’s music. At least, it will be the same people and management.

Are some Oasis shows in the pipeline?
Nah, Noel’s gonna do some acoustic shows. Andy and Gem will join him, Zak is back with The Who and I’m chilling with my children and my missus. I don’t like Oasis acoustic. I’m more into the rock’n’roll way of Oasis. I’d rather be at the shows as a guest.

You’ve written some great tunes and we’d like to hear more of them. Do you have any solo record plans?
No man. I’m Oasis. (laughs) Good title for your interview.

What does songwriting mean to you?
I’m doing it for fun, there’s not a lot of pressure. I’m kind of new and I’m still happy singing the others’ songs. I’m just sitting down and strumming some chords on my guitar. It happens as it happens.

Will there ever be a song that is written by you and sung by Noel?
I’d like to think so, that would be cool. A Gallagher/Gallagher song.

Is there anybody you’d like to collaborate with?
No.

You were on a huge tour until March. Any spectacular shows?
Oh, Manchester was amazing and also the Madison Square Garden. And some little shows as well.

Do you remember the gig in Switzerland?
That was in that small place. I didn’t like it, it was too noisy and strange.

Next year, you’re receiving the Outstanding Achievement Price at the Brit Awards.
It’s always nice to be getting an award but we’re doing this for 15 or 17 years, I can’t remember. We’re quite relaxed. We got top tunes and we don’t give a shit about awards. It’s great to have some free booze and to have a good time, though.

What bands do you like?
Kasabian, they’re good lads and yes, the Arctic Monkeys are cool as well. There are loads of bands out there but there are hardly any that are good.

What are your plans for next year?
I don’t know. I’m waiting until the big man is calling for a new record. (laughs) And maybe I’ll be buying some new clothes.

Football?
Nah, rubbish. It’s not really interesting at the moment.

Liam, thanks for the interview. Have a nice day.
Lovely, thanks man, take care, yeah man.

Tom Chaplin Dismisses Liam Gallagher 'Posh Lightweight' Comments

Keane frontman Tom Chaplin has said that he is not bothered by the damning comments Liam Gallagher mad about him last week.

As previously reported, the gobby Oasis singer took a swipe at Chaplin and Pete Doherty, calling them ‘little idiots’ and ‘posh lightweights’ for seeking help over their drug addictions.

But speaking to The Mirror, Chaplin has refused to become embroiled in a slanging match.
He said: “I’m a massive fan of Oasis and he’s entitled to his own opinion. But, frankly, I’m not bothered.”

Chaplin also continued that his rehab programme is going well, saying: “I’m feeling much better. It’s hard to come to events like these where there’s wall to wall booze but I’m doing ok.”

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher clearly wants his sons to be as scary as him as he takes them Trick or Treating last night.

Gene, five, and Lennon, seven, were dressed as ghosts as they walked around Primrose Hill, North London, with 34-year-old Liam. His kids may want to be little devils — but there’s no hellraiser like their dad.

Pie-Eyed Piper Noel Leads Way

Noel Gallagher partied hard after the Q Awards . . . and told me he had never had so much to celebrate.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the biggest bash of the year at London’s Met Bar after the ceremony on Monday.

Noel was loving his new role as elder statesman with adoring younger stars following him there, rather than heading for the official aftershow do.

Only last week the Oasis legend told me he was after my Caner Of The Year title too.

And he certainly proved a worthy contender.

He headed off on the party path as soon as the awards finished at 4pm, followed by his star-studded entourage like a modern-day Pied Piper. And he was still going strong right up until the bitter, booze-drenched end, finally staggering off with his girlfriend Sara Macdonald at 2.30am.

The party was like music heaven. Crammed on to the tiny dancefloor were Noel and Sara, Paul Weller, Mani from Primal Scream and the lads from Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks and Kasabian.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them all pogo-ing away together. The DJ played tracks by The Jam, The Stone Roses, Sex Pistols, The Beatles and The Specials — and they were all dancing away like kids at a disco.

Girls Aloud ligger Sarah Harding and Amelle and Heidi from Sugababes were also there paying tribute to Noel.

But unlike his brother Liam — who stayed away — Noel didn’t display a shred of arrogance. He admitted he was reeling after winning the Classic Songwriter Award and picking up Oasis’ gong for Best Act In The World Today.

He told me: “I could not be happier with my life.

“Sara is my best friend in the world.

“And even better, I get on really well with her parents. Her dad is a Rangers fan so I ring him to wind him up when they are losing.”

Before Noel’s Q do, the Met Bar had fallen out of favour with the cool crowd.

But now it has come full circle — and on Monday it hosted one of the best parties I’ve ever been to.

Treasured moments include seeing Mani’s brilliant dance moves when Fools Gold by his former band Stone Roses came on.

Paul Weller also managed to still look cool when his hit Town Called Malice blasted out.

But not even this cast of class acts could challenge Noel’s status as the Godfather Of Rock.

He is the man the new generation of music stars look up to.

Noel, we salute you.

I’M thinking of dubbing party animals Noel, Arctic Monkey’s star Jamie Cook and Kasabian’s Tom Meighan the new Goodfellas. I’ve shown how they’d look in the famous film poster. The original movie said: “Murderers come with smiles.”

These boys just come with pints.
