Stars Come Out For Radio 1 Birthday

Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher and Tony Blackburn will present a series of programmes on Radio 1 as part of the station's 40th birthday celebrations.

The former Beatle will host the first of 10 evening shows titled Radio 1 Legends, beginning on September 17, playing some of the tunes that inspired him and his career.

He will be followed in the slot by acts including the Arctic Monkeys, Ozzy Osbourne, Debbie Harry, Norman Cook, Gwen Stefani and Oasis guitarist and songwriter Gallagher.

Blackburn, who hosted Radio 1's first ever breakfast show, will return to the station on September 30, exactly 40 years after its first broadcast, to co-host the breakfast slot with Chris Moyles.

This kicks off a day of programmes featuring ex-Radio 1 DJs, including another former breakfast DJ, Zoe Ball, who joins Sara Cox between 1pm and 4pm, and the chart show at 4pm, to be co-presented by JK and Joel with former hosts Mark Goodier and Bruno Brooks.

Hollywood actor and John Peel fan Elijah Wood will host a tribute to the late Radio 1 DJ at 10pm, called Keeping It Peel; following a one-off edition of Annie Nightingale's request show and an hour-long Radio 1 documentary, The A-Z of Radio.

Other former Radio 1 breakfast hosts will join Vernon Kay for the Sunday morning show from 10am.

Radio 1 shares its 40th anniversary with Radio 2, Radio 3 and Radio 4. Radio 3 was previously the BBC Third programme, renamed on September 30, 1967 with the launch of the other three national stations.

Anniversary programming on the other networks include a show hosted by Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse's Smashie and Nicey on Radio 2; and a spoof This Is Your Life-style documentary fronted by Stephen Fry and Matt Lucas on Radio 4.

Amy Winehouse "Liam Gallagher's A Fan"

Taken from a interview with Amy Winehouse in this week's OK magazine.

Everyone says nice things about you, we hear Liam Gallagher's a fan...

Yeah someone said to me the other day: 'What kind of music do you like because we asked Liam Gallagher and he said he only liked rock and roll?'

I was like: 'That's a lie because he said he liked me and I'm not rock and roll!'.

Got, you Liam!

Oasis Pair Invited To Break Record

Organisers of a world record attempt are hoping rock star brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will join them in Ireland this week as their ancestral clan unites for a colossal get-together.

More than 10,000 emails and letters have been sent around the world inviting Gallaghers to Co Donegal on Saturday for the latest international same-surname gathering.

The Oasis duo have been asked to attend but the man behind the massive family do is remaining tight lipped about the rock stars.

"We've invited a couple of boys from Manchester, and that's all I'm saying," organiser Adrian Gallagher said.

The aim of the Gallagher Global Gathering is to beat the record set by the Welsh last year when 1,224 Joneses turned up to an event in Cardiff.

"It's not a matter of keeping up with the Joneses, it's a question of beating them," Mr Gallagher said.

Chairman of the gathering, Donegal priest Father Sean O'Gallachoir, joked when told of the current record: "I could get that in the parish."

Over the last two and a half years, emails have been sent to Irish groups in Canada, Australia and the US, more than 8,500 letters have been sent to the UK and 2,000 around Ireland.

The Gallagher quest also reached international airwaves including an interview on Japanese radio while American broadcasters ABC are planning to film the event.

"The Japanese like the idea of family and culture because some people over there think they are beginning to loose the connected part of their culture," Mr Gallagher said. Gallagher, originally a name associated with the north-west of Ireland, has spread around the world and the clan can trace its roots back to the legendary Irish king Niall Of The Nine Hostages.

Bon Jovi Attacks Oasis, Robbie Williams And Beckham

Singer Jon Bon Jovi has launched a scathing attack at British rockers Oasis and pop star Robbie Williams - insisting their music is so bad they "couldn't fill a bar".

The Livin' On A Prayer hitmaker also hits out at troubled Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty and pokes fun at soccer ace David Beckham in the new issue of Glamour magazine.

He says of Williams, "That guy? He couldn't fill a bar. He couldn't even sell 500 tickets. "(Oasis) couldn't fill a bar, either - and they're full of themselves.

He adds of Doherty, "We're not familiar of anything other than his antics and the fact that he's always in trouble - I've never heard a single one of his songs."

But Bon Jovi's most bitter comments were reserved for LA Galaxy's Beckham, who he ridiculed by asking, "Is he past his prime?"

Is Noel Gallagher To Rich To Write?

To be creative, you must be unhappy; to be unhappy, you must be poor. Therefore, you must be short on cash to be a good musician because a band that lacks creativity will end up…with no money? English rockers The Kooks seem aptly named, because their frontman Luke Pritchard certainly comes across as a little off-side. According to Pritchard, Oasis star Noel Gallagher can no longer write successful songs because he has far too much money to be creative. It is for this reason that he wants The Kooks to record as much music as they can before they become famous and are stripped of all artistic abilities. Pritchard recently told Music-News.com, "He wrote all the songs before he got big. You can't write about having a shit time when you're living in a mansion."

First of all, I’m not sure Noel Gallagher has or ever will be happy, so right away it’s an odd claim. Then there’s the obvious fact that all the money in the world does not guarantee happiness, as evidenced by all of the problems within celebrity culture. And finally, since when has it been a rule that chart topping hits be singularly about “having a shit time?” Of course there are a lot of powerfully emotional songs that unfortunately deal with dark issues, but surely musicians don’t depend on tragedy for success. Or do they? I for one am not ready to accept that, so I’m looking for Oasis to prove Pritchard wrong with their next album, slated for release sometime in 2008.
