The Sand Band's David McDonnell Confirmed For Noel Gallagher's Backing Band

We first told you back in August of 2009 that Noel Gallagher had been speaking to members of the Sand Band about joining his new backing band. The Guardian has now released a review of the Sandband's debut album confirming the lead singer's participation in Noel's band.

The Sand Band's singer and guitarist David McDonnell will be playing in Noel Gallagher's new backing band, but don't hold that against him. In this instance, the elder Gallagher's ears are clearly in perfect nick: the Liverpudlian quintet's debut album is excellent. Its chief influences are drawn from either side of the Pennines, namely the more wistful, folk side of fellow Scouser Michael Head, leader of Gallagher favourites Shack, as well as the shimmering ballads of Sheffield's Richard Hawley. Somehow, McConnell is even more melancholic than either, making this the ideal accompaniment to a quietly nursed pint.

More On Rhys Ifans For Creation Records Film Role

The man credited with discovering Oasis has revealed he wants Rhys Ifans to play him in a movie about the story of Creation Records.

It’s an apt choice for Creation Records supremo Alan McGee, who has settled in Hay-On-Wye. Not only is the Welsh Notting Hill star a friend, but he once fronted an incarnation of Super Furry Animals before they signed to McGee’s seminal label.

And in the video for the Oasis hit The Importance of Being Idle, Ifans played the part of a high-kicking funeral director.

Opening up on possible movie projects in the pipeline, McGee told Wales on Sunday: “There are two ideas – a druggie one and one that’s more serious. Me, Tim Abbot of Creation Records and Rhys would all love to be in a movie about Creation.

“Creation is something that I’ve had nothing but success with, so I know a movie about it would work. Rhys spends most of the time in Spain now [where he has a farm in Majorca]. He is a genius and he is my friend and I would love him to play me in the Creation story which would cover all the emotions.”

He added: “We would all like to work together to cultivate the idea and my character but I’m not going to reveal too much about it just yet.

“The other movie idea would combine Creation and me as a maverick music guy with the stories of Malcolm McLaren (late Sex Pistols manager) and Tony Wilson (the Factory Records and Happy Mondays manager).”

McGee famously co-founded the Creation Records label in 1983, which was home to such ’80s and ’90s luminaries as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub, Super Furry Animals, My Bloody Valentine, The House of Love and – most famously – Oasis.

McGee is already the main subject of Upside Down:The Creation Records Story, a new documentary expected to be available as a DVD and to be broadcast on TV screens from April. The film, named after the Mary Chain’s 1984 debut single, features interviews with JAMC’s Jim Reid, Bobbie Gillespie of Primal Scream and Oasis’s Noel Gallagher.

McGee said: “Danny O’Conner who directs Upside Down is a genius and he managed to get just about everybody involved in it to take part. But Liam Gallagher didn’t go in it because Danny was scared that if they both appeared it would turn into the Oasis Show, and Noel thought that too.”

Meanwhile, McGee said he was getting used to the peace of the Mid Wales countryside – as well as its flip side.

“I moved to Wales for the quiet life and I should be getting a bus pass!

“But I love it here even more than Scotland; the people here are the sweetest I’ve ever met. As a result of Upside Down I’m going to be attending about every film festival going this year.

“But I like nothing better than DJ-ing at a pub in Mountain Ash, with 300 people singing songs by Oasis and the Beatles’ All You Need Is Love for hours on end.”

Liam Gallagher: There Was Never Any Question About Me Working With Gem, Andy Or Chris

Liam Gallagher has told the NME that there was never any question about him going on with his other Beady Eye band mates after Oasis split in August 2009.

He said: "There was never any question about me going on with Gem and Andy and Chris. Without them I probably wouldn't be in a band. I'd probably got stuck into doing the Pretty Green 'gear', chilled out for a bit, whatever".

Liam Gallagher Is John’s Latest Recruit

Pop megastar Liam Gallagher has become the latest in a long line of celebrities to back a campaigning football team.

The Oasis singer was in Glasgow to launch his new clothes shop, Pretty Green, and was besieged by hundreds of fans and paparazzi.

But that didn’t stop Renfrewshire United boss John Plott fighting his way through the heaving throng to ‘have a word’.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: “I wasn’t really surprised how busy it was, to be honest.

“The opening of the shop had been cancelled in December because of the weather and the new date had been well publicised in the papers and on radio.

“The one thing I couldn’t believe though was the amount of Liam ‘clones’ that were there. It was really spooky because everyone looked just like him!”

But John, who campaigns against bigotry and racism through his football club, managed a word with one of his musical idols and, more importantly, grabbed the opportunity to hand over one of the famous blue and green United tops – with ‘Wonderball’ emblazoned across the front.

He said: “Ingram Street was packed and we must have waited there for over an hour, but it was well worth it.

“I didn’t think we’d get near him when I saw the crowds but we’ve never given up in our lives and managed to fight our way to the front.

“When he got out his car I stepped forward and told him a bit about the team.

“He said, ‘that sounds great, mate’ and I passed him the strip. He said thanks and wished us good luck before making his way though the crowd into his shop.

“I thought ‘Wonderball’ was appropriate as one of Oasis’ biggest hits was ‘Wonderwall’.”

In the past, Plott and co have presented a strip to ex-Manchester City boss Mark Hughes, footballer Craig Bellamy, and Chelsea captain John Terry.

Liam Gallagher: Working With Gem And Andy Is Like "Putting On A Great F**king Jacket"

Liam Gallagher has told the NME that working with Gem Archer and Andy Bell for Beady Eye, is like "putting on a great f**king jacket".

The singer said "When I'm singing anything that Gem or Andy have written, it just feels absoulutly natural for me. There's not a single song of theirs where I'm like, 'F*ck this, it doesn't feel like me', or that I can't get involved in. It's like putting on a great f**king jacket, you know what I mean? I know I can wear it well".

Beady Eye release their eagerly anticipated debut album 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' on 28th February 2011 on Beady Eye Records. The album features 13 brand new songs written by the band and was recorded at RAK Studios in autumn 2010 with producer Steve Lillywhite.

The band recorded the video for debut single 'The Roller' in sub zero temperatures in Cambridgeshire in December performing in a ‘Motorcycle Wall of Death’, one of only two in the country, complete with motorcycle stunt riders.
