On August 22nd 2005, Oasis released 'The Importance Of Being Idle' single.

It was the bands eighth and final single to top the UK Official Singles Chart.

The video is based on the film and play Billy Liar with Rhys Ifans playing the role of Billy. The Gallagher's play Shadrack & Duxbury, the owners of the funeral parlour where Billy works.

On August 22nd 2009 Oasis played at the V Festival in Stafford, England.

The band would split up later in the month in Paris.

On August 21st 1994 Oasis recorded the video for the as yet unreleased 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' single at the Borderlines in London.

The band treated fans who were at the shoot to a free gig listen to a bootleg of it below.

On August 21st 1997 Oasis released 'Be Here Now'

Despite being released on a Thursday the album racked up sales of over 695,000 and debuted at Number One on the Official UK Album charts from just three days of sales.

It took 17 days for the album to sell a million copies.

One Of The Biggest Moments Of Our Lives, Right?

It was one of the biggest moments of our lives, right? So says Noel at some point in the upcoming Oasis documentary 'Don't Look Back In Anger', a fly-on-the-wall insight into what the band's reunion was really like. It still doesn't feel real, and yet today's two minute, sixteen second trailer is enough to take you right back to 2025. 

Oasis have always been both guarded, private and secretive and at the same time, unapologetically unfiltered and open. It will be fascinating to finally see what went on behind the curtain as they prepared to get back on stage together considering how miniscule the access has been to the band for the last two years. The teaser trailer that came out for the film revealed little beyond the apprehension we knew Noel took into those first gigs in Cardiff. This time round, we've been given a greater sense of what's to come in this forthcoming documentary, a new instalment to the Oasis story after ‘Supersonic’, then ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ introduced the band to a new generation of young fans a decade ago. We see Liam and Noel in the rehearsal room, shots of a Manchester vicar talking about forgiveness, and a number of incredible shots of fans weeping, singing, and cradling each other in the joy of those indescribable gigs. A creatively edited soundtrack of Supersonic's scraping guitar intro and Champagne Supernova's accordion bed create an eerie soundtrack.   

Visually, it's all made for the big screen so it's an absolute must to watch this at the cinema in a few weeks. Tickets for a lot of cinemas are on sale this week, so now's your chance! It's encouraging to see that stylistically, the amazing videos we saw last year on the band's social accounts have been reflected in the tone of the shots of the gigs. We see glimpses of that amazing juxtaposition of movement against the band's stillness, of the darkness of these huge stadium gigs offset against the colour of the fans from around the world jumping backwards in unison to Cigarettes & Alcohol. 

There's not much more to say until we see the whole thing in lights, but as a fan, I couldn't be more excited to see how it all played out. We went from near certainty that the band would never come back, to seeing them on stage together again in what felt like a matter of months. Added to the fact we got to go another round with them, is the feeling that this time it meant more, to the band, and to us. It will be amazing to witness Bonehead's role in bringing Noel and Liam together, and to celebrate his understated but utterly vital position in that band. Seeing him in the middle of the stage; the anchor of it all, was a special moment for everyone who has loved the band for so many years. 

The film will be a celebration of one of the biggest moments of our lives as Oasis fans. I'm almost too excited to write about it! We all hope there's more, but whatever happens, we had Oasis Live 25 and that summer, and the moments in this film will live forever with all of us.

Oasis Fans Spend Almost £3000 To Bring Rare Gig Footage Online

Fans have helped bring rare footage of an early Oasis performance in Glasgow online after paying almost £3000 to get their hands on it.

The footage is from when the band played at the Tramway in on April 7th 1994. They were supporting The Boo Radleys.

On August 14th 1995 Oasis released the 'Roll With It' as a single. 

The song was beaten to the number one spot on the Official Singles Chart by Blur's 'Country House' that was also released on the same day.

The single sold 216,000 copies in it's first week on sale.



On August 14th 1996 Oasis played the first of two dates at the Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork, Ireland.

He is a dedicated father of three and a two-time cancer survivor. His extensive collection, events and major exhibitions have been seen by tens of thousands of people, while he has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for causes close to his heart. He manages founding Oasis member Tony McCarroll and has worked closely with a wide range of musicians throughout his career, including past and present members of Oasis.

Co-author Danny Hall is a lifelong Oasis fan, memorabilia collector and writer. On This Day In Oasis History...

On August 10th 1996, Oasis played the first of two nights at Knebworth. Support for the two days included The Prodigy, Ocean Colour Scene, Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers, Kula Shaker and Dreadzone.

More than 4% of the population applied for tickets to see Oasis at Knebworth, the largest demand in British history. A whopping 250,000 people got to see the band over two nights another record but incredibly, Oasis could have sold out another 18 Knebworth shows.

"I remember thinking 'I'll just have a quick hour in bed before we go on', and the Prodigy came on. If you've ever tried to sleep 20ft from the stage when the Prodigy were on live? Forget that."

When Oasis played at Knebworth the band had the following singles in the UK Official Singles Chart.

Whatever, Wonderwall, Don't Look Back In Anger, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Some Might Say, Live Forever & Supersonic. Long before the days of streaming etc these were from sales only.

If the audience for either of the gigs lay down, they would stretch from the Gallagher's childhood home in Burnage to Knebworth.

"Liam wanted his vocal blisteringly loud." It meant the microphones were so powerful that "someone would get within 10 feet of a microphone and you could hear their breath".

VIP guests at Oasis' Knebworth concerts were given their own fold-out Oasis-branded binoculars.

They were also given a special stick of rock that measured around 8" long and featured the bands logo and dates of the now legendary gigs on the label.

Liam Gallagher “I’m very proud of it, I am. What do I remember? Not a lot, really. Nothing. I remember forgetting that we were doing a second night – I thought we were only doing just one, so I got really drunk after the first night. But I can’t remember anything else.”

Noel Gallagher "I remember us flying over and just being sort of normal. We were worried about other stuff: ‘Have you got the beers backstage?’, ‘Are they cold?’, ‘And have you got Sky?’, ‘Is it Sky Plus?’ Stuff like that".

Dad’s Credit Card, A Phone Box And Oasis At Knebworth

It’s hard to believe that it'll be thirty years tomorrow since me and three friends went to watch Oasis at Knebworth.

After initially missing out on Maine Road, then getting lucky when the second date was announced, Oasis at Knebworth tickets were much easier to get!

Armed as normal with my Dad’s credit card, and a load of fifty pence pieces, me and Becks went to the local phone box, as neither of us had a house phone, and got through immediately!

Dad was not happy that Oasis were in his words "taking the piss" with the ticket prices.

I think both our tickets the first time we saw Oasis were £14, and that included booking fees! I said I would pay my Dad back and, as usual, I never did.

The Journey

Two local lads came up with us, so the petrol was split four ways. My Mam gave us enough food and drink to keep us fed for a week. In the weeks and months leading up to the gigs, Oasis and talk of the BIGGEST gigs ever were on TV, the radio, in newspapers and throughout the music press. It was the event of a lifetime and I was so excited. I saw them a few times that year and they were outstanding in Cardiff and of course what is still the best gig I have ever attended was the first night at Maine Road.

We left the day before at around 2pm with a load of cassettes in my car featuring all the artists who were playing. We stayed about an hour's drive from the venue. I can’t remember what the place was called now, but there were a few Irish fans staying in the hotel with us. Before we left South Wales it was decided that I would drive there and Ivor would drive home.

We picked the boys up around 11am on the day of the gig and Ivor was completely pissed and had been drinking since dawn, I think. He was still a bit merry to be polite from the night before. After a huge row and Ivor being called a few swear words, we headed to Knebworth. It took us ages to get into the venue and park up. On the way to the venue, Ivor had put a huge blim burn from a fag on the back seat of my Dad’s car that caused another huge row and had finished a mountain of drinks.

Inside The Venue And Support Acts

We went through the entry points during The Chemical Brothers' set and made our way to the bars and toilets. We grabbed some food and a drink and then hit the merchandise stalls. We then made our way to the left-hand side of the stage.

The line-up for the entire weekend was filled with UK acts who were all doing well in the charts and with no Glastonbury it was the event of the summer. We got to where we would spend the rest of the evening during Ocean Colour Scene's set. I don’t remember much from them apart from them being really good.

Next up were the Manic Street Preachers who I had seen quite a few times over the years and are always great live. They were from a town around a 15-minute drive from my house in South Wales, and had supported Oasis a few times.

The final support act of the day was The Prodigy. At that moment in time, apart from Oasis, this is one band, act, whatever you want to call them, that I went out of my way to watch, and still do today.

They took to the stage and the noise and the response from the crowd was unbelievable. They had been number one with Firestarter and like Oasis, I had seen them for the first time early in their career in a small venue in Wales. They came to put on a performance and they certainly did!

Finally, the moment me and my friends, along with 124,996 other people, had been waiting for...OASIS!

After months of hype, the band arrived on stage to the biggest roar I have ever heard.

During one of the early songs, I got up on my friend James' shoulders and all I could see was people.

The highlights for me were Noel doing his mini acoustic set and John Squire coming on to play Champagne Supernova.

After all the fireworks, I remember the walk back to the car because it took forever. Ivor, Becks and James had all been drinking all day, and Ivor was completely out of it. He was dragged, kicked and punched back to the car by us. When we eventually got back, it took what felt like forever first to get out of the venue and then to get eventually home.

Was it the best Oasis gig I ever attended? No, it wasn’t, but it was the BIGGEST. A moment of celebration for the fans and the band themselves I imagine.

Only two years earlier I had seen the band play to 1,000 people or fewer in North Wales. They moved quickly onto arenas and then to these absolutely monstrous gigs.

There is talk of them returning to the venue next year and I hope they do.

Oasis are best experienced on the biggest of stages and no stage in the UK at least, is as big as one at Knebworth.

On August 9th 1994, Oasis played at the Riverside in Newcastle and caused a riot after a member of the audience threw a punch at Noel Gallagher.

The Daily Mail headline the following day described the incident as ‘An Orgy Of Violence’.
