Oasis' Noel Gallagher: 'My Night With Marilyn Manson And Kenickie'

Noel Gallagher has spoken about a wild night out – that saw him hanging out with Marilyn Manson and 'Grease' character Kenickie – while mixing Oasis' new album in Los Angeles.

The Oasis leader was over in America working on 'Dig Out Your Soul' with producer Dave Sardy when he and brother Liam Gallagher ended up on a very unlikely wild night out.

In an this extract from NME's exclusive with the guitarist, Noel Gallagher reveals how the self-styled God Of Fuck invited him to a show, after which the Jeff Conaway, the actor who played Kenickie pulled a knife on him.

Check out this extract below, but for the full interview featuring Gallagher on Jay-Z, Maroon 5 and the new Oasis album get this week's issue of NME on UK newsstands from Wednesday (August 6)...

Noel: "Don't ask how, but we know his [Marilyn Manson] bass player, Twiggy."

NME: Twiggy Ramirez. The guy who wears the leather skirt, right?

Noel: "…and he wears a witch's hat as well. Don't ask. So anyway, they're doing a gig, and he says, 'Manson wants you to come up and see him.' He's a massive Oasis fan: 'Be Here Now' is his favourite album because it was recorded on a fucking mountain of charlie. The plan was to get there ten minutes before he comes offstage. Now, along the way the message got garbled and we got there ten minutes before he came onstage…"

NME: So you had to sit through a Marilyn Manson show?

Noel: "We get marched to a spot behind the mixing desk, and there’s all these American goths, and the gig's going on, it's all screaming and shouting, rape and pillage and all that fucking shit. Before one song he goes, '(adopts booming dark lord voice) I WANNA DEDICATE THIS SONG TO THE TWO BIGGEST FUCK-UPS IN ENGLAND!' Me and our kid are looking at him, and looking at each other going, 'He means you, 'cos Lord knows he don’t mean me.' Then he's going, 'OASIS ARE IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT!', and he starts doing 'Cocaine Supernova' and screaming, 'THESE TWO GUYS FROM ENGLAND, THEY'RE BIGGER FUCK-UPS THAN I AM!' Anyway, so we go back after the gig and we just got fucking absolutely… beyond pissed on absinthe. That's when Kenickie from 'Grease' fucking pulled a knife on us.

"He comes into the dressing room, and Liam's been watching 'Celebrity Rehab' so he's going, 'Ah, there's fucking Kenickie!' So we get him over and we're all pissed, so we're like, 'Why are you on a fucking walking stick, you lightweight!?' He's going, 'My back's fucked. Fucking John Travolta in 'Grease' – he's so fucking short, they made me stoop over and that's when I invented the famous Kenickie walk!'

"We were going, 'What?! The famous Kenickie walk?' He started doing this walk so we're giving him a bit of stick. And he says, 'Hey, I'm fucking still young enough to pull a knife on you!' and he whips out this flick-knife. We just laughed, like, 'You silly old man!' That was a great night – we all got more drunk on absinthe and argued in the van all the way home about some Kinks fucking B-side."

For the full interview get this week's NME, on newsstands nationwide from Wednesday (August 6).

Tom Meighan On The New Oasis Album

With their mutual appreciation society, have Kasabian let the Gallagher brothers hear any of the new album?

"No, which is mad," admits Tom. "Now we're back in Leicester, we don't see nearly so much of them. I haven't seen Liam in probably six, seven months.

"I speak to Noel more, I saw him for a drink when I was up in London a couple of weeks ago. It was a civilised night, no major carnage to report."

At least Tom has heard the new Oasis album, which he's very keen on.

"It's going to take a lot of people by surprise," he enthuses. "It's their best record in years, incredible rock & roll and raw as f***. It's mega.

"It's one for us to live up to, but I know we're Publish Postup to the task. It's hard, as I know how incredible our next album is - and I wish it was out there, so people could agree!"

Noel Gallagher Joins Russell Brand Onstage Last Night

Taken from The Radio Show Live - Russell Brand, Matt Morgan, Mr Gee and Noel Gallagher.

Noel Gallagher joined and played 'The Importance Of Being Idle' last night at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

Some of the comments from from the Russell Brand fan forum..........

When Russell mentioned Noel G and people cheered he said they had said "we said no Gallagher fans and yet they still get in".

Someone asked if Russell had been back to grays which he said no, someone reminded him his mum was there and he said 'yes i know, if only she had some kind of millionaire relative"

Second half Noel G is going to start a business where for 15 quid he names your pet because he thinks he has the ability to name animals. Legs, spot, mr whiskers.

Noel called Russell an A.rselicking C-lister. Also described him as 'dancing up and down like a bear on coals that's swallowed a dictionary.

Russell said that Noel had been in France trying to write jokes for the show and Noel said that Russell had gone mad.

We also heard a voicemail that Noel had left after the hoax call. "Well well well, Russell brand thinks it's ok to joke about rape, we'll talk about this on the show on saturday.

Icing on the cake had to be Noel doing "the importance of being idle" Bloody brilliant.

Also

Noel Gallagher joined them for the second half and generally took the **** out of both of them and drank his way through A LOT of beer. However some girl started screaming at Noel for about 10 minutes on and off to the point that Russell had to ask for security to take her out as she had ruined it for everyone.

Noel then did a solo acoustic song, think it was the importance of being idle, and Mr Gee summarised the show with a poem which was awesome, all I can remember is that it ended with the word C**T - we can safely say that the show won't be broadcast!

Noel Gallagher On His Obsession With The Beatles

"The first record I ever bought on CD was Sgt Pepper's. It would have been '87, I got Sgt Pepper's, then Revolver and then The White Album. And I remember listening to The White Album and thinking, 'What the f**k is all that about?'. It was like opening a treasure chest."

Oasis Artwork Curse Strikes Again?

Just days after the news that Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier has been destroyed by fire, landmark London record store Sister Ray has gone into administration, citing competition from free music downloads and a "dearth of good releases".

These two events may seem completely unrelated, but there is a connection – both the Grand Pier and the Sister Ray store appeared on Oasis sleeve artwork in 1995.

The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare can be seen here in the background of the Roll With It single cover.

While the Sister Ray frontage appears on the (What's The Story) Morning Glory? sleeve, photographed on Berwick Street in London's Soho.

It doesn't end there though. The cover of Oasis's 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe features the late, great footballing genius and legendary swordsman George Best. As far as we are aware, Burt Bacharach and former Manchester City star Rodney Marsh, who also appear, are both alive and well at the time of writing.

Even the band members themselves aren't immune to this misfortune. Other than Andy Bell, Gem Archer, Liam and Noel Gallagher, every member featured on a cover sleeve has eventually been fired.

Thank goodness that new album Dig Out Your Soul's cover art is just a psychedelic collage.

Warner Brothers Announce Distrubution Deal With Big Brother

After more than a decade with Sony Music, Brit-pop phenoms Oasis have found a new home, at Burbank's Warner Bros. Records. Today, Warner Bros. will announce a North American distribution deal with Big Brother Recordings, the Noel and Liam Gallagher-owned label, and the Oct. 7 release date of Dig Out Your Soul, the band's seventh studio album. The first single, "The Shock of Lightning," written by Noel, will hit radio in mid-August.

Earlier this summer, word had spread around Los Angeles that the Gallagher brothers were in town mixing the album, which was recorded at Abbey Road studios in London. The guys, seen at various psych-rock shows around town, were said to have almost 40 songs completed. Since then, that number has been truncated, but the record still features songwriting contributions by all four band members. Says Diarmuid Quinn, Warner Bros. Records COO, "The new music kicks ass!”

Liam Gallagher Is Enjoying The Sun-shee-ine

Here's Liam Gallagher getting his last sun-shee-ine holiday before a huge 18 months for Oasis.

The frontman was snapped relaxing and sinking rose wine with wife Nicole in the Costa Del Sol.

The pair were also joined by Nicole’s sister Natalie and other friends and family.

Sitting in his straw hat, Liam looked more like The Man From Del Monte than a Manc hardman.

Oasis release their first single from new album Dig Out Your Soul in September, with the album out in October.

Then they start a mammoth world tour.

I hear the tracks Liam has penned are good, with one being tipped as the best on the album.

He still needs a haircut, though.

Alan Mcgee Initially Thought Oasis Were 'Facists'

Creation records founder speaks to Uncut about his history with the band

Creation Records' boss Alan McGee has spoken to Uncut about his time with the band, from signing them in the early 90s to becoming in his own words "the people's band."

However in an exclusive cover interview in the September issue of Uncut magazine McGee explains some confusion about who the Gallaghers were, writing them off as right-wingers. McGee says: "I didn't put the name Oasis together with Noel. I just thought 'Fascist.'

He adds: "My little Manchester mate, Debbie Turner, shared a practice space with this band that had a Union Jack on the wall. I remember looking at the Union Jack and asking, “Are they fascists?” and she said, “Yes.” She was taking the p**s, of course. She added, “They’re called Oasis.”

"It was a psychedelic Union Jack, sitting alongside pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But it was still a Union Jack – and back then, before the whole Cool Britannia bollocks, a Union Jack meant you had to be right-wing. I truly didn’t have a clue. I didn’t put the name Oasis together with Noel. I just thought, ‘Fascist.’"

To read the full interview with McGee, charting the inside story of working with Oasis, get the new issue of Uncut, on sale tomorrow (July 29).

Jay-Z: Noel Gallagher Rips Off The Beatles

Rapper slams Oasis frontman after Glastonbury row

Jay-Z has hit back at Noel Gallagher, saying he copies other artists with his music.

The rapper was responding to the Oasis frontman claiming rap didn't belong at Glastonbury.

'He made a blanket statement,' Jay-Z tells Observer Music Monthly. 'He hasn't heard every hip-hop record and I haven't heard every rock record, so I can't make a blanket statement and say rock doesn't belong somewhere.

‘I can say that Noel Gallagher rips off The Beatles. I can say that because I’ve heard his music.’

The 38-year-old hip-hop star adds like he'd like to meet Noel, 41, for a chat about music.

‘I’d like to sit him down, play him some really great poetic music, some incredible, well-produced hip-hop,' he says.

‘Things have to change. Just because something has been a certain way doesn't make it right. To me, music is music.’
