Gallagher Goes Sven-tal For City

In a matter of months Sven Goran Eriksson has gone from managerial genius and dead cert for my Bizarre Lord title to the verge of the sack.

The Sun revealed yesterday how Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra is plotting to axe the ex-England boss at the end of the season.

But current Bizarre Lord and Man City fan Noel Gallagher has launched the Save Our Sven campaign — and I’m right behind him.

The Oasis legend said: “Shinawatra has come in and I think he is a bit of a nutcase. If he gets rid of Sven after the best season we’ve had in living memory, it’s ridiculous, ludicrous.

“He obviously doesn’t know a great deal about football if he gets rid of Eriksson. The only thing that will get him off the hook now is if he has JOSE MOURINHO lined up.

“Shinawatra is living in cloud cuckoo land and if I saw Sven in the street, I’d give him a big kiss and say, ‘You know what, you take him to the cleaners’.”

Noel was so angry about The Sun’s story he phoned BBC Radio Five Live to vent his feelings.

And he added: “Any manager worth his salt won’t take interference from the owner and if he wants to buy players, then that’s wrong.

“City fans don’t want Ronaldinho anyway. If he won’t pull his finger out at Barcelona, he’s not going to do it at West Brom away next season is he?

“I’d be amazed and equally appalled if I met a City fan that felt that getting rid of Eriksson would be a good thing. We all love him.

“He has given the City fans pride. The minute’s silence for the Munich air crash at Old Trafford was a reflection of his personality. He is a graceful, dignified man and that summed it up.

“The style of football is fantastic but if Shinawatra comes in and thinks he is going to get Champions League football straight away, he’s tripping!”

I’m with Noel. The Premier League without the hotel-dwelling Swede will be a much duller place.

Oasish Set To Rock Glastonbudget

Music festivals. Once upon a time, we couldn't get enough of them. Tens of thousands of tickets would sell out in a matter of hours, and all the best bands would queue up to play.

Fast forward to 2008, and it's a very different picture.

Now, critics dismiss them as over-priced, over-hyped and over-commercial, and that's even before the challenges of the unpredictable British weather.

The fans too seem to be weary of the annual mudbaths and the burgers which cost £5.

In 2007, Glastonbury tickets sold out in less than two hours.

Tickets for this year are still available now - three weeks after they went on sale.

Glastonbudget - absolutely no relation to Glastonbury - is reversing that, having doubled its ticket sales year-on-year since it began in 2005 as the brainchild of Nick Tanner, landlord of The Harrow Inn in Thurmaston, and his old schoolmate Chris Dunn.

"Nick noticed that whenever he had a tribute band on, it drew three times the crowd.

This year's line-up includes many familiar-sounding names - The Kaiser Thiefs, Crowded Out, The Jamm, Let's Zep, and the Ded Hot Chilis.

One of the few acts to have played every Glastonbudget so far is Oasish - the tribute version of a certain well-known Manchester group.

Paul Higginson is the lead singer, Oasish's own Liam Gallagher.

"On the calender of gigs for us, Glastonbudget's one of the top gigs of the year, definetely," he says.

"I think there's only us and two other bands who've been back there every single year since it started, and it's quite a privilege to be asked back every year."

When I suggest to him that there must be dozens of other Oasis tribute bands, he answers with a swagger worthy of the real Liam.

"There's lots of tribute bands that'll do a gig for cheaper than what we would, but if you're gonna pay £30 for a jeans-and-t-shirt band, a £30 jeans-and-t-shirt band are gonna turn up and deliver a £30 jeans-and-t-shirt show.

"That's why Glastonbudget are getting bigger and bigger crowds each year, they're not scrimping on the quality of the bands."

Indeed, ticket sales for this year's festival are 40% up on last year, with fans known to be arriving from as far away as Denmark.

The organisers hope it might even be a sell-out with all 5,000 tickets taken.

"We've never actually broken even," says Nick ruefully. "It would be fantastic if we could do that."

:: The event begins at Turnpost Farm, Wymeswold, Leicestershire on May 23.

Phil Collins Reignites Feud With Noel Gallagher

Phil Collins has announced that he is retiring from music.

Having completed a reunion tour with Genesis, the multi-instrumentalist has said in a newspaper interview that he has no plans to tour or make another album.

Collins told The Times that he will continue to write, simply because he does not know how to stop.

The interview quotes Collins as saying he is being more interested in his collection of memorabilia from the Battle Of The Alamo.

Collins added: "It's not that unusual for a man of my age who grew up reading Davy Crockett."

Collins was speaking ahead of his appearance on Sky Arts TV series 'Songbook'.

But he also re-ignited an old feud with Noel Gallagher. The Oasis man famously said ahead of the 2005 general election: "Vote Labour: if you don't and the Tories get in, (Collins) is threatening to come back from Switzerland, and none of us want that.

Collins said of the comment: "I don't care if he likes my music or not. I do care if he starts telling people I'm a wanker because of my politics. It's an opinion based on an old misunderstood quote."

Tom Meighan's Lucky Life

Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan is lucky to be alive.

The singer is amazed he has managed to survive all the hard partying he's done over the years without going to rehab.

He said: "Since Kasabian came out, most of it has just been a blackout for me. Thank God I'm still here. I haven't gone to rehab, which is the genius thing. When we were on tour with Oasis, when we did America, we had some great nights with Liam and Noel Gallagher. That was an amazing time - and meeting Lars from Metallica. I got off stage in San Francisco and he was in our f**king tour bus - and that's the b******s."

Meighan also revealed he is obsessed with Pot Noodles, and always takes the British instant savoury snack with him on tour.

He added to Loaded magazine: "We take Pot Noodles with us. Everyone loves chicken and mushroom, but beef and tomato is pretty cool. And I tell you what's really underestimated - chow mein. Great flavour."

Long Nights On The Road With Oasis

The fights between Oasis' Liam and Noel are legendary. In 1994, on the band's first American tour, tensions bubbled over so much that Liam hurled a chair at Noel. Then during the 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' tour in 2000 arguments got so bad it prompted Noel to jack in the tour and head home.

And during the recording for'(What's The Story) Morning Glory', the duo used a cricket bat on each other to relieve in-studio stress.

Now Ballie Walsh, the man who spent a year with the Gallaghers during their 2005/2006 'Don't Believe The Truth' tour, has revealed the brothers' highly-organised system for preventing further scraps: refusing to go out together.

Walsh, whose first motion picture, Flashbacks Of A Fool, has just opened in UK cinemas filmed the band for his Lord Don't Slow Me Down documentary film, released on DVD last October.

He explained the Gallaghers operate a "one day on, one day off" policy with regards to socialising, only going out to party after gigs on alternate nights so they never have to drink together, therefore avoiding battles. "What happened is Noel went out for one night and had a rest the next night when Liam went out. he revealed.

When asked if he thought this was over the top, Walsh said: "We'll would I want to tour with my brother? No. I think how they manage to keep it working is great. The fact that they've survived this long and they're still doing it [touring], and they go on stage every night well, it works."

Walsh would not be drawn on details of the Gallaghers' partying antics, although he did say their social schedule played havoc with his own sleeping patterns, as he had to go out and film either Noel or Liam as they took their turn to have a night out. "I never got a bloody rest!" he laughed.

The director went on to explain that while it might seem like a blast travelling the world with Oasis, it was in fact very dull - something, which may be down to the Gallaghers' timetable quashing potential hell-raising nights out.

"It's insanely boring, he said of the long hours of hanging around before gigs and travelling.

"You go from dressing room to stage, to hotel to coach, to dressing room to stage. That's all you've got!"

Noel's So Jealous Of Jay-Z

Grime ace Wiley reckons Noel Gallagher is against Jay-Z playing Glastonbury because he feels the honour should go to a UK artist.

The Oasis fella, 41, opened a can of worms when he became the most high-profile star to suggest the Glasto signing may have been a bit of a faux pas.

Fans seem to agree, with the festival failing to sell out immediately, unlike previous years.

Wiley, whose tune Wearing My Rolex is set for the Top 10 this weekend, told me: “What Noel means is: ‘How come a US artist is headlining Glastonbury?’

“He doesn’t mean urban, he doesn’t mean black. Noel is just upset because he’s not getting his band on there.

“He should stop worrying about what other people are doing.

“He’s got money, he should stop being greedy.

“Personally I like Jay-Z, and respect him.”

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Some Might Say" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher and was released on the 24th of April 24th 1995. It was the first single to be released from their definitive second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in 1995, and provided the band with their first #1 in the UK Singles Chart.

The track was apparently inspired by the Small Faces and/or T-Rex. It was the last Oasis track to feature drummer and founding member Tony McCarroll, who was asked to leave the band during the recording sessions for (What's the Story) Morning Glory when tensions arose between McCarroll and the Gallagher brothers, resulting in an alleged punch up with Liam Gallagher. The rest of the tracks on the album feature Alan White on drums.

The sleeve artwork, shot at Cromford railway station in Derbyshire, England, features art director Brian Cannon's father with wheelbarrow and his mother with mop. Also pictured are Matthew Sankey, Cannon's aide and Carla Knox, barmaid of his local pub. Liam Gallagher can be seen on the bridge whilst Noel can be viewed with a watering can. Cannon himself rates this piece amongst his greatest works.

The planned promo video for the song was cancelled due to Liam not turning up for the shoot. Instead, a makeshift video was created using footage from the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and US "Supersonic" videos.

In an interview promoting the compilation album, Stop the Clocks, Noel stated that "Some Might Say" is the "archetypical Oasis song' and 'defines what Oasis is". This is notable, as the song isn't played live much. Ironically, Noel changed his mind later in the interview, stating that "Some Might Say's" b-side, "Acquiesce", was the song that defined Oasis.

The song also appears on Stop the Clocks, as do two of the b-sides. Surpisingly, this means that the "Some Might Say" single contains the fourth largest number of tracks to appear on Stop the Clocks of any Oasis release (after Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory and The Masterplan). Therefore more songs from this single ended up on Stop the Clocks than Don't Believe the Truth (2 songs), Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Heathen Chemistry (1 song each) and Be Here Now (no songs from this album appear on Stop the Clocks).

Oasis Stars 'Unable To Party Together' Anymore

http://stopcryingyourheartout.com

Oasis stars Noel and Liam Gallagher never party together anymore, according to film director and documentary maker Ballie Walsh.

Walsh, who produced last year's Oasis DVD 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' and is currently promoting 'Flashbacks of a Fool', claims the pair operate a "one day on, one day off" system as they are unable to spend time together under the influence of alcohol.

Instead, he said, they go out separately when on tour with their system deciding whose turn it is to go out drinking.

Speaking about his time filming the band, Walsh told NME: "What happened is Noel went out one night and had a rest the next night when Liam went out."

The filmmaker defended the brothers' actions, arguing that it was impressive they had managed to stay together as a band for over a decade.

He said: "Well, would I want to go on tour with my brother? No. I think how they manage to keep it working is great. The fact that they've survived this long and they're still doing it [touring], and they go on stage together every night - well it works."

Russell Brand's New Movie

I went for a chinwag with Russell about his brilliant new movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall, before he jetted off on another leg of his campaign for global superstardom.

One memorable line about Oasis rockers Noel and Liam having a threesome with his ex-girlfriend made the final cut.

Russ said: “I have paid tribute to Noel Gallagher in the film. I hope he will be flattered to be mentioned in the context of an American film rather than the usual treatment from news reporters over there saying, ‘The Gallagher brothers disgusted viewers today when they spat at a child.’”

Courteeners Star Hits Out Over Oasis Comparisons

Courteeners rocker Liam Fray is sick of being compared to Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

The Mancunian, whose band are currently in the Top 10 with debut album St Jude, has been accused of being just as lippy as his namesake following catty remarks about their rivals.

But despite having been inspired by the Gallagher brothers and hailed by U2 and Morrissey as the best British band to emerge since Oasis, the new Liam says he is tired of being tarred with the same brush as his predecessor.

He said: "Some people seem to think we are bad lad bruisers because we are from the north of England, but it is just southern media bias.

"I was inspired by Oasis, though. I remember being in the back of my dad's car when I was 10 and hearing Wonderwall for the first time and knowing that was what I wanted to do. None of our songs sound like Oasis, but people always say that.

"If you see Noel or Liam on the front of a magazine, you are going to buy it because they are funny.

"We are similar because we don't tell lies. There's no marketing campaign around us and no media training, as you can probably tell.

"We have wanted to do this since we were small, so to finally get the record out and for it to do well is buzzing.

"It is everything I have been working towards since I was in nursery. You choose your mates and the social circles and the albums you decide to nick off your pals at school shaped from that. It's an album that has been 22 years in the making."

Meanwhile, he says the fact the band are being criticised means they are already a success - but insists there's no Blur versus Oasis rivalry on the horizon.

Liam said: "As anybody starts to get successful, people try to shoot them down. But if they want to say negative stuff, we will just silence them with good songs."

The band have also announced another UK tour, which sees them play Dundee's Fat Sams (October 6) Glasgow's Barrowland (October 7).

They're also heading to T in the Park this summer for a show on the festival's Radio 1/NME stage on Saturday, July 12.

Don't Be A Stick-In-The-Mud, Noel. Jay-Z Will Be A Hit At Glastonbury

The fuss over the news that Jay-Z is to headline this year's Glastonbury festival has caught me by surprise. When I first heard, I thought Jay-Z was a natural fit – the world's biggest hip-hop star at the UK's most forward-thinking music festival. Noel Gallagher disagreed: "Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music... I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury," he said. "It's wrong." As a hip-hop fan, that struck a nerve with me. So when the BBC asked me for a comment, I gave them a quick, equally ill-considered quote: "These are the typical reactionary views of a pampered has-been." It's not that I have a problem with Noel or Oasis, it's just that I can't stand such monomania in the broad church of modern music.

The next day, I awoke to an in-box full of emails from irate Oasis fans; many reiterated Noel's point, that Glastonbury was about "indie rock" and nothing but, and how dare that big scary bogeyman Jay-Z spoil their beautiful garden party? Their response exposed one myth: that the old tribes of pop have all but dispersed, making way for a generation of technologically savvy, cosmopolitan consumers who cherry-pick the finest sounds from any number of contrasting genres. The furore also prompts a bigger question: is the Jay-Z row a storm in a teacup, or symptomatic of a far deeper malaise?

The hostility you see on the NME message boards – "we don't need this hip-hop wank" ran one posting – is hard to explain. Perhaps it's simply the prospect for "indie rock" fans that Jay-Z's appearance will force them out of their comfort zone. Or perhaps, as Emily Eavis, the co-organiser of this year's Glastonbury, alluded to in The Independent on Tuesday, at the heart of this row may be something more troubling than differences in musical taste: race. It would be interesting to know what the reaction would be if it weren't Jay-Z headlining, but Eminem.

British festival audiences have had their musical tolerance tested in the past, and found it wanting. In 2004, when 50 Cent (right) and his G-Unit crew played Reading, they were viciously bottled by a braying mob (don't take my word for it, go to YouTube). 50 was remarkably sanguine about it. "That was fun," he laughed. "It reminded me of when I first started. How do you react to it? You start to take it all in while you're up there and laugh – what are you going to do, get mad?"

That was an exception, and I don't think it'll happen to Jay-Z this year. His show isn't full of the cheesy rituals that you normally get in a hip-hop show: he's very
focused. He knows how to whip up a lethargic crowd with nothing but his superstar presence. But he's also part of a tradition in hip-hop of audience interaction – as opposed to the kind of rock gig where a band will play a song, wait for the applause, and carry on, often without so much as an aside to the crowd between songs. In contrast, Jay-Z will pick a member of the audience and rap straight to them for a minute at a time. It gives his shows a laser-beam intensity, and if people can approach it with an open mind, his appearance at Glastonbury will win a lot of converts. (One of the highlights of last year's festival was Dizzee Rascal joining the Arctic Monkeys on stage.)

The boy from Brooklyn's cause will be helped by the fact that, like the Arctic Monkeys, he understands the power of the special guest appearance. Last year at the Royal Albert Hall, Jay-Z brought on stage Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow. How fitting it would be if hip-hop's biggest act issued an invitation to indie-rock's pin-up boy at Glastonbury in June.

From Catherine Tate stooge to Gavin and Stacey pin-up boy.

Mathew Horne, who has never been on the cover of a magazine, doesn't show up on gossip pages, had a supporting role on a sketch show and now plays the straight man in a gentle (though excellent) BBC3 sitcom, has become the kind of man his childhood heroes pay their respects to.

Most people who bump into Liam Gallagher walk away with a black eye or a flea in their ear. Not Mathew Horne.

"I felt a tap on my shoulder, looked round and there he was. He said, “All right, mate – can I shake yer 'and?” He was a big Catherine Tate fan.

"I bumped into Noel last week, and he's a big Gavin & Stacey fan. I saw Richard E Grant on the street recently, and he was saying, "You're a legend."

Noel Gallagher Fans Attack!

After SCYHO and various other Oasis sites ran Black Book Media's article Noel Gallagher Jealous Definitely, Racist Maybe it caused Ben Barna's usually sparingly used comments box to overflow with your messages of concern. See Ben's response below:

Earlier today, a concerned gentleman e-mailed BlackBook demanding I issue an apology for my post on Noel Gallagher’s negative reaction to Jay-Z headlining Glastonbury (the gentleman doesn't think it's right). Apparently the article was picked up by an Oasis fansite, causing the minions of Oasis Nation to unleash their wrath upon me in the comments. Throughout the day, my colleagues and I shared laughs over gems such as: “ben barna you have your head jammed up or [sic] politically correct ass,” while another lauded “Classic idiocy from a low-grade journalist who clearly hasn’t done their research.” At least they consider me a journalist. Thanks guys! See the comments yourself for the full effect. What pissed them off so much, was that apparently I called the fragile Mr. Gallagher a racist.

I have since learned that you cannot use such a loaded term when discussing someone as beloved as Noel, which is why Emily Eavis, co-founder of Glastonbury, tip-toed around it. Allow me to address those upset by the post, in all caps, so you don’t miss it this time: EMILY EAVIS INSINUATED THAT NOEL GALLAGHER’S COMMENTS WERE RACIALLY MOTIVATED. I SAID THEY WERE NOT. I SAID THEY WERE BASED ON JEALOUSY. Read the last sentence again, and maybe you’ll get it. Take your time, no rush. What I found so delicious about this whole episode is that everyone who isn’t a rabid Oasis fan (i.e. doesn’t spend their time on Oasis fan forums) didn’t interpret the post as a anti-Gallagher smear. Meaning, fans let their commendable passion for Noel Gallagher and his band override those equally commendable reading comprehension skills.

I am a huge fan of Oasis—I grew up with their music, and I love the Gallagher brothers. Noel is a brilliant songwriter, and Liam has one of the most distinct voices in modern rock. Five years ago, after leaving the hospital after an 18-day stay, the first song I listened to on my walk home was “Cast No Shadow.” It was inspiring. But, having said that, I will never ever let my love for Oasis alter the way I read and understand sentences. That would be dangerous and irresponsible. But I’m glad you guys do, because this last day has been an absolute hoot.

'I'm Nothing Like Liam Gallagher'

The Courteeners singer Liam Fray likes a rant.

Within ten minutes of our chat starting, the motormouth Manc has yelled, said the f-word more times than I care to remember and declared his band better than any other. No wonder he is being called the new Liam Gallagher.

But this week the singer’s gobbiness was justified when The Courteeners’ debut album, St Jude, crashed straight into the album charts at No4.

Liam says: “We are buzzing. Chart positions have never really been on our agenda as — well, look at Westlife. They’ve had loads of hits and they’re s**t. But this is nice. It shows that a lot of people are into us.”

Gobby

But any mention of the other Liam from Manchester and I am having to put my fingers in my ears. He bellows: “Because I’m Liam, I’m northern and I’m from Manchester, people are making comparisons. I’m obviously unintelligent and insensitive as well then.

“I’m nothing like him. I’m gobby, yes, but I do have brain cells. We’re having to bang twice as hard to get taken in as we’re not an Oasis copy band. We have got f*****g brains. We’re not this mouthy, laddish band people think we are.

“It’s nothing personal as I’ve never met Liam Gallagher and I love him and, yes, we dress alright, like Oasis and The Libertines were an influence on us, but weren’t they on most bands our age?”

Noel Gallagher: Jealous Definitely, Racist Maybe

[All views expressed in this article are those of the authors, and do not necessarily represent the views of SCYHO.COM]

Stumbling across this story about Noel Gallagher sounding off against a fellow artist has us feeling all 1996-y, when Oasis mattered, and our dad surprised us with a new Nintendo 64. But this time it isn’t fellow Brit-poppers Damon Albarn or Richard Ashcroft getting singed by Gallagher's molten tongue—it’s the untouchable Hova. Gallagher is upset because his beloved summer festival Glastonbury, the centerpiece of Europe’s summer-fest smorgasbord, has booked Jay-Z as its headlining act, and attributes lagging ticket sales (it has yet to sell out, unlike previous years) on the American rapper’s presence. “If it ain't broke, don't fix it," the-brother-who-writes-all-the-songs told the BBC.

He’s upset because Glastonbury’s headliners are traditionally rock acts, and Hova riffs from his head, not from a Les Paul. “If you break it, people ain’t gonna go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. No way. No. It’s wrong.” Lucky for Jay-Z, Gallagher doesn’t curate Glastonbury (although his band headlined it twice), so his spot on the bill looks safe. Glastonbury’s co-organizer Emily Eavis hinted at something more sinister lurking beneath Noel’s words, but stopped short of blurting it out: “There is also an interesting undercurrent in the suggestion that a black, U.S. hip-hop artist shouldn’t be playing in front of what many perceive to be a white, middle-class audience. I’m not sure what to call it, at least not in public, but this is something that causes me some disquiet.” Here’s where we intercede and remind Ms. Eavis that racism and jealousy are two very different things.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Who Feels Love?" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It became the second single to be released from the album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, peaking at number 4 in the UK charts.

The album was noted for its psychedelic feel, and "Who Feels Love?" was held up as the most extreme example of this. Mark Stent was praised for his production on the song, creating a "trippy" feel like that found on Beatles songs such as "Rain". With the psychedelic and Eastern sound, the song also reminds of George Harrison achievements like "Within You Without You" and also some of his solo work.

However, despite the high-quality production, the song was not well received by the critics, NME said that the production "triumphs over any real sort of feeling... pure mock Maharishi spirituality that not even Liam can salvage from the realm of self-parody".

One of the B-sides is a cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter". It was played live during the Shoulders tour of 2000. Paul Weller recorded a version of b-side "One Way Road" for his covers-album Studio 150 in 2004. The Weller version was subsequently used as the theme tune to Jack Dee's sitcom Lead Balloon.

The demo for "Gas Panic!" was only ever officially released in Japan before being included on a free Oasis CD issued with the Sunday Times on June 23, 2002.

Irish musician Rob Smith said in an interview on Irish national television in December 2006 that this was the most under-rated song of all time and should be "praised for its genius".

More Details On Gallagher Collaboration

Paul Weller has commented further about working with Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and former Blur musician Graham Coxon on his new solo album 22 Dreams and has also revealed details of the possible first single.

Gallagher appears on “Echoes Round The Sun” alongside fellow Oasis member Gem Archer, and the album track is expected to be the first single released on May 26, a double A-side with “Have You Made Your Mind Up”.

Weller who previously helped out on Oasis’ Champagne Supernova told BBC news this week that a new collaboration was a long time coming. He said: "Well me and Noel have been talking about trying to write something for years now. He had the idea for the backing track and I just put the tune and the words on top."

Weller also adds that Oasis fans could be disappointed that the Gallagher doesn’t sing on the track, saying: "He's not singing on it, he's playing a lot of keyboards and some bass which is not necessarily the first thing you'd think of."

Graham Coxon features on 22 Dreams album track ‘Black River’ and Weller says they "worked on that early last year” adding that “Graham plays drums, backing vocals and guitars."

Weller also commented on the collaborations in general saying: "I think among most musicians you just get on with it and enjoy it, and it's fun and just a joy to do."

Meanwhile, Paul Weller is back on stage. You can see him at the following venues next month:

Empress Ballroom, Blackpool (8)

Residency? What Residency

Press speculation about Oasis playing a residency at London's O2 Centre later this year is pure nonsense.

An Oasis Management spokesman said:

"Oasis simply don't do residencies. The O2 Arena is one of a number of London venues that's been considered for a show later on this year."

Editor Attacks "Has-Been" Noel Gallagher

Hip-Hop Connection editor Andy Cowan has described Oasis star Noel Gallagher as a "has-been".

He hit back at comments Gallagher made about the arrival of hip-hop music at Glastonbury Festival being "wrong", describing the rocker's views as "reactionary".

The guitarist suggested yesterday that Jay-Z's addition to the Glastonbury bill was the reason behind the lower number of ticket registrations for this year's event.

Cowan told the BBC: "These are the typical reactionary views of a pampered has-been.

"Having had the grave misfortune of seeing Oasis play Glastonbury in 1995 - a lumpen, turgid mess of a set - Gallagher himself has set the bar very low, and I've no doubt Jay-Z will be a huge success this year."

Festival organiser Emily Eavis also responded to the remarks, pointing out that urban acts including De La Soul, Cyprus Hill and The Roots had all played the summer bash before.

Glastonbury Festival takes place on June 27-79. The full lineup will be announced on May 1.

Paul Weller Gets Oasis And Blur On His New Record

Once upon a time, Oasis and Blur in the same room would have almost guaranteed fisticuffs. But now Paul Weller has done the seemingly impossible and brought two of the biggest warring bands of the '90s to the same record...sort of.

The Modfather has recruited both Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon for tracks on his new solo double album, 22 Dreams.

Weller previously worked with the Gallaghers, providing guitars on Champagne Supernova on their second album What's The Story, Morning Glory.

He told Newsbeat they've been trying to figure out a musical collaboration ever since.

He said: "Well me and Noel have been talking about trying to write something for years now.

Noel has recently spoken out about rapper Jay-Z headlining Glastonbury
"He had the idea for the backing track and I just put the tune and the words on top."

The track in question, Echoes Round The Sun, also features Noel's bandmate Gem Archer. It's expected to be released as a double-A side with Have You Made Up Your Mind on 26 May.

Weller admits that fans expecting to hear Noel singing may be disappointed.

He said: "He's not singing on it, he's playing a lot of keyboards and some bass which is not necessarily the first thing you'd think of."

Black River

Sadly, Coxon does not appear with the Oasis men but lends his musical skills to another track, Black River.

"We worked on that early last year, Graham plays drums, backing vocals and guitars," said Weller.

"I think among most musicians you just get on with it and enjoy it, and it's fun and just a joy to do."

Of the younger crop of UK bands, Weller revealed he's a big fan of The Enemy. They performed together at a charity event in London earlier in the year.

Weller said, in particular, he's a fan of singer Tom Clarke's songwriting.

He said: "I just think it's nice to hear a band that's got something to say and just putting some effort into the lyrics.

"There's a lot of good music out there but no one has startled me, lyrically, but Tom and the band seem to be doing it."

22 Dreams is released on 2 June.

Oasis' Noel Slams Hip-Hop Headline

Noel Gallagher has spoken out against the decision to recruit a hip-hop star to headline Glastonbury.

The Oasis guitarist blamed the failure to sell all the festival tickets on the decision to get Jay-Z to perform.

Organisers have insisted that slow sales are down to fears of more wet weather, but the 40-year-old Oasis star said it is "wrong" to have a hip-hop headliner.

He told the BBC: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

"Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Oasis headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1995 and 2004, with the event selling out on both occasions. Last week, 35,000 tickets remained available for the Somerset event, which is usually an instant sell-out.

Robert Richards, who assists Michael Eavis, has denied that getting Jay-Z to headline is slowing ticket sales, saying: "The weather has been a factor and that is bound to dampen people's enthusiasm but there is a real buzz about the place now. We are praying for sunshine.

"This claim about the headliners is complete nonsense. There are thousands of acts at Glastonbury and many revellers come to the festival without any intention of seeing the headliners.

"Anyway, I, for one, firmly believe that Jay-Z will go down in history as one of the great headliners."

An advert for the "most extraordinary festival anywhere in the world", was published in a national newspaper on Monday.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Hindu Times" is a song by English rock group Oasis, and was the first single to be released from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry on 15 April 2002. It was written by Noel Gallagher.

The title has little to do with the lyrics of the song, which are more in the vein of Definitely Maybe's "Rock 'n' Roll Star". It has been speculated that the title refers to the main riffs' similarity to Indian music in sound, sounding as if they were played on a sitar.

The song, which combines the powerful fast rock of their earlier work with the psychedelic feel of their later work, was one of the first Oasis singles since (What's the Story) Morning Glory to receive almost unanimously positive reviews from the critics.

The song was unveiled during Oasis' Fall 2001 Noise and Confusion Tour. The song was due to be released commercially at the same time but Noel decided the track needed more work done on it to be suitable for release.

Mark E Smith On Oasis

Drugs are overrated, he's never met a guitarist he liked, and don't even get him started on students ... In the second extract from his explosive new autobiography, Mark E Smith, the wayward genius behind the Fall, offers his thoughts on everything from John Peel to the joys of Primark.

Thoughts on Oasis

I'd hate to have a brother like Noel Gallagher. What's he doing? Liam is Oasis - he's handsome, he's a good front man, great voice. What does Noel do except write Beatles-type tunes? I've met him a couple of times and you feel like saying, "Shut up!"

Noel Gallagher On Glastonbury, 02 Arena And More

Noel Gallagher has criticised the decision to have a hip hop act as the headline for the Glastonbury Festival.

The Oasis guitarist said having rapper Jay-Z at the festival is the reason it has not sold out this year.

He also said the event's organisers had changed things too much and that it was "wrong" to have a hip hop headline act.

There were 100,000 tickets sold for Glastonbury on the first day, but in past years all tickets had sold out in a matter of hours.

Gallagher said: "If it ain't broke don't fix it.

"If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

"Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?'

"I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Oasis headlined the main stage at Glastonbury in 1995 and 2004, with the event selling out on both occasions.

Gallagher also rubbished recent stories saying that Oasis were ready to "do a Prince" and have a residency at London's O2 Arena.

"We'll never play the O2. We went there to see Led Zeppelin and to be honest the gig was fantastic, but it was the most soul destroying venue I've ever been to.

"And much to our manager and agent's disappointment we came back and said we would never play there.

"So it means we are going to have to do 640 nights at Earl's Court, I would have thought.

"It's too Americanised for me, and it's too far away. Any gig you can get to by boat that hasn't got a beach is wrong."

New album

He did confirm that Oasis seventh studio album is complete.

"That's finished. All done. We're just kind of waiting to get a record deal and get it out.

"We've not managed to get a title yet. We're in the middle of doing the art work. Down to a shortlist of about three. The first single? That will be four-and-half minutes long."

When asked if Oasis were still Britain's band, or whether the Arctic Monkeys had taken over that mantle, Noel admitted: "We'll be bigger than them in terms of ticket sales, but they'll probably sell slightly more records than us.

"But then again they've got about 20 years on us. So see where they are in 2089, or whenever it is they'll be my age."

Yo Gabba Gabba Gallagher

Liam Gallagher is being lined up for a role on super cool kids' TV show Yo Gabba Gabba!

Star names like Lord Of The Rings hero Elijah Wood, skateboard legend Tony Hawk, sexy R&B star Mya and US indie pop heroes The Shins have already appeared in the smash-hit show on kids' channel Nick Jr.

Now the Oasis frontman is set to be next after his six-year-old son Gene talked him into accepting an invitation to take up the role.

A source close to the 35-year-old star said "He thinks the show's really good and he's ready to get involved."

US-made Yo Gabba Gabba! has become a global hit since it was first screened in America last year.

It launched in the UK on Nick Jr on February 18 and has quickly become a must-see for kids as well as adults. It is hosted by a character named DJ Lance Rock and five toy monsters - Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex and Toode.

The show uses its cuddly creatures, wild jokes and catchy music to teach kids of five and under that, for example, it's OK to apologise when they make mistakes or to try foods they have never tasted before.

Happy

Christian Jacobs, who co-created the show and takes the role of MC Bat Commander, is also the lead singer in US rock band The Aquabats. He's happy adults can watch the show "without wanting to hang themselves with a guitar string. My Kids don't know who bands like The Shins are or why they're cool but we can introduce them to each other."

An insider added: "We can't wait to see Liam. His sense of humour is perfectly matched to that of the show."

Oasis In Talks Over £15m Dome Dates

Some might say they're more suited to a pipe and slippers these days.

But I can reveal Oasis frontmen Liam and Noel Gallagher are planning a return to their cigarettes and alcohol heyday. I hear the lads have been in talks with AEG - the owners of the O2 - about a series of gigs later this year.

And I'm told the dates at the Dome will pocket the Britpop boys a supersonic £15million. The gigs will follow a series of shows in Canada and the US in August marking the release of the seventh Oasis studio album - recently finished in Los Angeles. A band insider says: "The dates will be a real special event - and the first major rock residency at the O2.

"There have been lots of pop acts there - the Spice Girls and Prince. And Led Zeppelin did one date. But no band has yet set up camp there for a whole run.

"They are lining up 10 dates some time in the autumn at the Dome before taking on the rest of the world."

Their London shows alone will net the band around a cool £1.5million a night.

The shows will eclipse Liam and Noel Gallagher's legendary weekend at Knebworth in 1996 when they earned a staggering £6million playing to 250,000 fans.

As yet no other UK shows have been announced, but I also hear they will be announcing a load more US dates.

Superfans like me will remember the early years, when every trip to America turned into a nightmare - with Noel famously quitting one tour in 1994.

Let's hope the older and wiser Gallaghers have put their warring ways behind them and finally bury the hatchet - just not in each other.

Noel Gallagher To Get Sneak Preview Of Kasabian's New Album

Kasabian have revealed that they have almost completed their third studio album, despite the obvious distractions.

"We go to the studio, potter around, eat sandwiches and it's hard to get things finished. We're about 80 per cent done now," said bassist, Chris Edwards talking to The Sunday Mirror.

Details of the follow up to Empire have been scarce, but songwriter Sergio Pizzorno confirmed that last year’s very limited edition single 'Fast Fuse' will feature on the record.

"I think it's going to go on the album,” explained Pizzorno, to Uncut’s sister publication, NME. “We've had thousands of people saying we want it on the album, we want it on the album, so it's going to go on."

"We're sort of in the process," added Pizzorno. "I don't really know when it’s going to be released, but as soon as we think it's ready it'll be out. It's psychedelic this one, it's going to open your mind."

The band has also revealed that they will test out the new record on their close friend, Noel Gallagher

He added, "We're going to play it for Noel in a couple of weeks. He speaks his mind."

Kasabian will headline Creamfields and Scotland’s Hydro Connect festivals this summer. See www.myspace.com/kasabian for details.

What's In A Band Name?

Here are the stories behind the monikers

So how do bands end up with their names? Is there a band-naming website? Well, yes, actually, but none of these acts needed it. Gavin Cumine gets etymological

When Lou Reed moved into his new apartment in New York in the early Sixties he came across a book called The Velvet Underground, by Michael Leigh, which detailed various underground sexual practices of the early Sixties.

In 1977 post-industrial Manchester Ian Curtis was reading The House of Dolls by by Yehiel De-Nur. In the novel De-Nur describes joy divisions, which were, allegedly, groups of Jewish women in concentration camps during the Second World War kept for the sexual pleasure of Nazi soldiers.

In the early nineties the band The Rain were looking for a new lead singer and a change of name. They decided to take on local loudmouth Liam Gallagher as singer. Hanging on the wall of Liam's bedroom, which he shared with brother Noel, was an Inspiral Carpets tour poster. Noel at the time was a roadie for the band. On the poster was one of the venues : the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon.

The beginning of any band's biography is their name. It is the starting point of a band that will accompany its sound for the rest of their career, through success and failure. Some band-names come around by coincidence, careful thought or just simply for the fact that it is a great combination of words that slip off the tongue easily. Here are some of the best stories behind the names.

On This Day in Oasis History...

"Supersonic" is the debut single released by British rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It also appears on their debut album, Definitely Maybe. It was released on the 11 April 1994 and peaked at #31 on the official UK charts. It was the song performed by the band on their debut national TV performance on Channel 4's The Word, which aired on 18 March 1994. It remains to this day a favourite song of both the band and the fans (on the Definitely Maybe DVD, Noel cites it as his favourite Oasis song). The single went silver in the UK on June 30, 2006, 12 years and 3 months after its original release.

In spite of its popularity, Gallagher claims the song is basically a collection of nonsense lyrics written in a matter of minutes, just before the band entered the recording studios to record the track. The identity of the character "Elsa" caused some confusion — according to the song She done it with a doctor/On a helicopter/she sniffin' in a tissue/Sellin' the Big Issue. Noel claims, "Someone told me "Supersonic" was about teenage prostitution. Shit!". It has since been revealed that Elsa was a nine-stone rottweiler with a flatulence problem who was in the studio on the day the song was written, hence the line "she's into Alka Seltzer". It was written and recorded at The Pink Museum in Liverpool. The plan was for Oasis to record "Bring It On Down" for their debut single and another bunch of demos. However, "Supersonic" was written and it impressed everyone so much, it was chosen to be the band's first single.

In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Supersonic" at number 20 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Supersonic" at number 25 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

The song is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks.
