“Liam Is Liam Every Minute Of Every Day”
Dave Sardy, producer of Oasis’s last two albums, on the power of the singer.
As everyone knows, Liam has such an amazing f*cking voice, but I didn’t really understand it until we’d started. He’s a surprisingly introspective person, but he’s not going to talk about, “Why don’t I do this with my voice?” He just does it. He is all id. But when I first started trying to record him, none of the normal microphones could stand up to the level of his voice. We would put up these classic tube mikes, and he would just f*cking obliterate them. Finally, we had to start setting microphones as you would in front of a guitar cabinet.
Then I watched one of those documentaries that came out, and he was talking about how they didn’t have a PA in the beginning, and he had to sing to get over the sound of Noel’s guitar, and I was like, So that’s where that voice comes from! Most singers are doing the affectation of sounding loud but singing quietly to save their voice, whereas Liam is always literally singing at the level of a f*cking Marshall cabinet. It’s that loud – you can’t put a regular mike on him.
The other thing is that Liam is Liam every minute of every day. There is no difference, in front of a microphone, on a bus, in a bar, at a restaurant. In my opinion, he is the perfect version of himself at all times.
