Liam Gallagher On Bassist Drew McConnell And Pete Doherty

Liam Gallagher has hailed his bassist Drew McConnell as ‘fucking talented’, as well as recalling the time he met his Babyshambles bandmate Pete Doherty.

McConnell plays in Liam’s current solo band, alongside Kasabian’s touring guitarist Jay Mahler, Mike Moore on lead guitar, Dan McDougall on drums and Chris Madden on keys. Doherty said that he experienced ‘stressification’ after losing McConnell from Babyshambles to join Gallagher’s line-up. Now, Gallagher has praised McConnell’s talent and attitude.

“I’d never met Drew before and you know – he’s fucking talented,” Liam told NME. “He’s played with The La’s, Drew, so he’s obviously talented. To keep the fucking Babyshambles thing going he’s gotta be pretty headstrong, you know what I mean.”

“I met him and he seemed cool. He’s been very fucking laid back. There’s been no like ‘look, you’s lot – do ya fucking thing, here’s your numbers, go and fucking do it’.”

Asked about whether he has any contact or relationship with Pete Doherty, Gallagher replied: “No, I’ve only met him once, but that was years ago at the Forum when he was with…what are they called.. fucking, Libertines. It was just ‘hello, you’re really tall and that’. He looked like my mic stand.”

Beady Eye Announce Split

Liam Gallagher has tweeted that his post-Oasis band have called it a day. He wrote: "Beady Eye are no longer. Thanks for all your support."

Beady Eye featured former Oasis members Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock, plus former Kasabian man Jay Mehler.

Their first album, Different Gear Still Speeding, was released in February 2011 and a follow-up, BE, appeared in June of last year. The band opened the Other Stage at Glastonbury 2013.

It's not clear from this brief statement whether Liam will now become a solo artist or whether it means he won't be working with the former Beady Eye members again.

Anyone expecting the imminent reunion of Oasis should bear in mind that Noel Gallagher has just announced his second album with the High Flying Birds, Chasing Yesterday, which will be released in March next year.

Liam Gallagher And Bonehead Reunite At Jon Brookes Tribute Concert

Liam Gallagher was joined on stage by former Oasis guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs for first time in 14 years at 'A Night For Jon Brookes' tribute concert.

The two ex-bandmates played with Andy Bell, Chris Sharrock and Jay Mehler from Liam's current band Beady Eye and performed Oasis classics 'Live Forever' and 'Columbia' at the show held in memory of the late drummer at The Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday night (18.10.13).

Regular Beady Eye guitarist Gem Archer - who is recovering from a fractured skull and broken leg - was among the audience watching and was seen using a crutch to walk.

Later in the evening, Liam, Andy and Bonehead joined The Charlatans on stage to perform a cover of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' which Liam dedicated to Jon's widow Debbie.

Earlier, Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield played a solo acoustic set made up of 'Motorcycle Emptiness', 'A Design for Life' and 'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next'.

James paid tribute to Jon on stage, saying: ''I met Jon a fair few times over the years, I won't get too deep ... but he was f***ing beautiful and the boy had groove!''
The Charlatans singer Tim Burgess played a short set with assembled 'friends'; Freddie Cowan and Arni Arnason from The Vaccines, New Order's Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert, Mumford & Sons' Winston Marshall and James Walbourn from The Pretenders.

They played three songs including a cover of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
The Charlatans headlined the evening with former Verve drummer Pete Salisbury replacing Jon, who tragically died from brain cancer in August aged just 44 after battling the illness for three years.

They played a selection of their greatest hits such as 'North Country Boy', 'The Only One I Know', 'How High' and 'One To Another'.

Introducing a moving rendition of 'My Beautiful Friend', singer Tim said: ''I think we can all guess who this is for.''

They closed with their usual encore of 'Sproston Green'.

Andy Bell took to his Twitter page today (19.10.13) to share his pride at being part of the special concert.

He wrote: ''Morning all. Wow thanks to @thecharlatans @Tim_Burgess @markcharlatan for putting on a great event for Jon.

''A pleasure to be part of it ... If I say so myself, @liamgallagher @Beady_Eye & @ParlourFlames were on fire! Loved @Tim_Burgess & friends doing ''Love will tear us apart''too (sic)''

Tim Burgess also took to Twitter to thank everyone involved in the concert and the fans who went.

He tweeted: ''A huge thank you to everyone who came to last night's gig, those who performed & all the lovely people who worked on it.''

All proceeds from the show went to The Brain Tumour Charity, of which The Charlatans are now patrons.

Liam Gallagher On Playing A Special Concert In Memory Of Jon Brookes

Liam Gallagher has said it was an easy decision to take part in a special concert in memory of The Charlatans' drummer Jon Brookes.

Mr Brookes, 44, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour three years ago, died in August.

The Charlatans will perform alongside other guests at the Royal Albert hall on Friday night in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity.

Liam Gallagher described the musician as a "good lad".

"He didn't have an ego, do you know what I mean?

"I wouldn't claim to be his best mate and that. I only met him through the gigs we've done, but every time I met him I had a splendid time."

Gallagher said he was on holiday at the time the concert was announced, but said he signed up straight away.

He will be performing alongside fellow former Oasis band mates Andy Bell, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Chris Sharrock, as well as Jay Mehler, currently part of Gallagher's band Beady Eye.

'Very positive'

West Midlands indie band The Charlatans said they organised the gig as a "fitting tribute" to founding member Mr Brookes, originally from Staffordshire.

Keyboard player Tony Rogers said in some ways the event would be a tough night, when the reality of their friend's death "will hit home".

"He was always very upbeat. His illness never got on top of him, he never let it get to him. He was always very positive and never moaned," Rogers said.

"It's not like he's gone really. It's like his spirit is still there. It will be a tough one I think, but every time you think of Jon it puts a smile on your face."

The Brain Tumour Charity's chairman Andy Foote said: "One of our biggest challenges is raising awareness of the disease, because the general public are not aware of the facts and they're quite startling.

"For example, brain tumours kill more people under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet less than 2% of funding that goes into cancer research goes into brain tumours."

Liam Gallagher Has Experienced What It's Like To Fly High In The Sky Like A Bird

Beady Eye singer Liam Gallagher claims he once ''got inside the mind of a dove'' and experienced what it was like to fly high in the sky like a bird.

Liam Gallagher once ''got inside the mind of a dove''.

The Beady Eye frontman claims he had an outer body experience where he felt what it was like to be a bird and fly high in the sky.

Although known for his hellraising antics, former Oasis star Liam insists he hadn't been experimenting with any illegal substances when he became a dove - which is a symbol of peace across the world.

He said: ''I once got inside the mind of a dove. A full-flying, living, breathing, dove. No, I wasn't taking anything. It flew off to high climes and it was very happy.''

The 40-year-old rocker is gearing up for the release of the band's second album 'BE' on June 10 and next week Beady Eye will be playing tracks from the record at London's iconic Abbey Road Studios.

The band - also comprised of Gem Archer, Chris Sharrock and Jay Mehler - will perform an intimate show at Studio 3 on Monday June 3 exclusively for Absolute Radio.

Studio 3 is synonymous with Liam's idols The Beatles and the group will be covering one of The Fab Four's tracks and the session - which will be attended by listeners lucky enough to win tickets - will also be filmed and will be available to watch on the Absolute Radio website and broadcast on Pete Donaldson's Evening Show on Thursday June 6.

Beady Eye Debut New Single At London Club Night

Liam Gallagher aired a brand new Beady Eye track from the band's forthcoming album at London club night This Feeling, which takes place at the Queen Of Hoxton pub.

Gallagher went to the club to see his Beady Eye bandmate, guitarist Andy Bell, DJing, and gave Bell the green light to play an unnamed track thought to be the band's next single.

“Liam made everyone’s night by shaking every hand in the venue and was on blistering form," said This Feeling organiser Mikey Jonns. "When he gave Andy and [Bell's DJ partner] Arveene the nod to play the new tune the place erupted!”

Tom Rowlett of the band Dexters heard the track. He said, "I was pretty fucked so memory a bit hazy, but it had a big brass section and Liam's vocals sounded massive, proper in-your-face psychedelic rock'n'roll. Sounding fuckin' massive, man, the whole place went off when it came on! Liam was amazing. They always say don't meet your heroes but he was brilliant – he pulled us into his VIP area, we had a few beers with him, he was buzzing off the new LP and so are we now!"

Former Kasabian guitarist Jay Mehler (pictured below), who has recently taken over as Beady Eye's bassist, was also in attendance. Mehler was drafted in following the departure of Jeff Wootton, who has left to go solo.

Bell and Arveene will be DJing at This Feeling Manchester at FAC251 on March 23, with The Sundowners playing live.

Beady Eye Enjoy Tear-Up At This Feeling

Liam Gallagher is a Jekyll and Hyde character – when he’s good, he’s very, very good – and you know the rest.

On Saturday night he was better than good, giving a masterclass in what a rock ’n’ roll frontman should be up to at the weekend.

The Beady Eye star and his bandmates enjoyed a tear-up at This Feeling – the best club night for guitar music in the country.

Liam posed for pictures, spent time with the new bands and was the last man to leave the Queen of Hoxton in East London.

As a treat for the punters who queued to get in he gave guitarist Andy Bell the green light to drop the band’s new single during his DJ set.

From what I hear it raised the roof – promising big things from their forthcoming second album.

The rockers also welcomed a new recruit after some Sky Sports-style transfer day action.

Kasabian guitarist Jay Mehler is taking over bass duties from Jeff Wooton who has gone solo.

With the Leicester lads in album writing mode, they shook hands and wished Jay – above with his girlfriend Lee who is Ringo Star’s daughter – the best of luck for the future.

Mike Jonns, who runs This Feeling, said: “Liam made everyone’s night by shaking every hand in the venue.”

Guitarist Andy and DJ partner Arveene will play This Feeling on March 23 at FAC251 in Manchester.

You never know which rock stars will show up on the guest list...
