A Pitch-Perfect Ending To A Sadly Familiar Song

A walk on the hallowed Boleyn turf was the only bright spot as Sven's loved-up recruits thumped the Hammers.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's Manchester City commanded play at Upton Park last week with such assurance and grace that far from seeming a hastily assembled squad of mercenaries from around this dirty little circle we call "world", they appeared to be afloat in a transcendental love affair with each other and the randy boffin who compiled them.

For me the opening day of the season was an oscillating mind waltz of conflicting emotions. The Irons were pretty shoddy, disorganised in midfield, lacking in imagination up front and a nerve-jangling ballet of tipsy confusion is what passed for a defence. Only Robert Green in goal and Mark Noble looked comfortable.

The ignominy was exacerbated by the prior knowledge of an after-match meeting with Noel Gallagher in Christian Dailly's box. Most people are aware that the Gallagher brothers are arrogant as a default setting, a feat they performed whilst supporting an unreliable and often risible football team. Well let me tell you that all the swagger and bluster we endured as discs went platinum and Brits were won were as nought compared to the gloating, showboating, puffed-up rhubarb I had to silently tolerate in a senior player's box after Saturday's misdemeanour.

I'd rather hoped that it would be me bragging and strutting, perhaps whilst chuffing on a cigar, consoling a tearful Noel that the season is yet young and that he'd made some jolly good records. Instead me, my Dad, my mate Jack and Robin the hippy black cab driver (there's an anomaly - if you leap into his carriage unawares it's like a magical mystery tour as he recites poems and demands a more lax immigration policy) moped about, overjoyed to be amongst adored West Ham players (James Collins was also there like a big, twinkly beefcake) but irked by the unanticipated defeat.

Manchester Gets Simpsonized!

It's the new craze sweeping across the internet - everybody is turning themselves into a character from cult TV show The Simpsons.

The new phenomenon - called ' Simpsonizing ' - is spreading like wildfire on community and friends sites like MySpace and Facebook .

Millions of people across the world have turned portrait photographs of themselves into the infamous 'yellow' caricatures which have proved such a hit on the cartoon series.

The M.E.N. decided to try out the new craze on some of Manchester's best-known celebrities in a bid to see what all the fuss is about.

And the results, though mixed, were nevertheless hilarious.

We also gave the Simpsons treatment to Burnage-born Oasis stars Noel and Liam Gallagher - whose caricatures even have their trademark bushy eyebrows.

And perhaps one of the funniest caricatures is Simply Red star Mick Hucknall with his flame-coloured hair.

Bolton boxer Amir Khan was also given a Simpsons-style make-over and still looks as though he would be able to tough it out on the streets of Springfield.

View the gallery of some of Manchester's finest by clicking here, it includes the Gallagher brothers, Wayne Rooney, Shameless star Frank Gallagher and many more.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about go to the official Simpsonized website here and turn yourself into a Simpson's legend.

Why not make some Oasis inspired ones and send them into scyhodotcom@gmail.com and I will post some of them sometime next week.

The Brothers Gallagher

Lord Don't Slow Me Down, a chronicle of Oasis' 2005 world tour, is set to be released on DVD October 29th. The movie, directed by Baillie Walsh, had a limited release in UK theaters last year. The DVD is expected to contain commentary by Oasis' Gallagher brothers, outtakes and a second disc featuring 16 songs performed from the '05 Manchester, England show. The 2005 tour was Oasis' biggest ever, playing in over 26 countries to over two million fans.

According to Noel Gallagher, recording for Oasis' seventh studio album began on July 3rd of this year.

Despite my disparaging remarks against the Stones, I actually am a big fan of concert DVDs. This will be Oasis' definitive live DVD, of course, and it'll be interesting to see what the brothers have to say in the commentary. They're always good for a laugh.

It's also good to see Oasis gaining some momentum again. They really are a great rock band

Definitely, Baby...

Some Might Say that Noel Gallagher's long-term girlfriend, Sara MacDonald, is one swell girl.

The Oasis star's Scottish partner is expecting their child in just a month - and seemed delighted to show off her bump yesterday.

Edinburgh-born Sara, 31, had ventured out on a shopping trip to London's sexy lingerie store Agent Provocateur.

The PR guru is obviously planning to keep the spark alive in her relationship with Noel, 40, once baby arrives.

More On The Manchester Versus Cancer Concert DVD

After today's post about the Manchester Versus Cancer concert, I sent a message to the person behind the DVD and asked for more details on the setlist and realease date.

This was the reply I got

Hi ,

Yes, Noel's set is going to be on the dvd. He played 10 songs and I think it likely that 1 or 2 of those will be included in the dvd extra's menu, whilst the rest will be on the main discs.

As for the release date, the people running the show hope to have it out by xmas, but i think that is a little optomistic. If not then early next year.

The set sounds great by the way!

The DVD is planned for release late in the year and also includes Jims mixes from last years event featuring New Order(Joy Division set), Johnny Marr, Badly drawn boy and many others.

There are some really special moments in both concerts, the New order set is amazing and Johnny Marrs version of How soon is now is blinding.

Oasis To Release New Material This Year, Tour Documentry And New Track Set For October.

Oasis are releasing their long-awaited tour film Lord Don't Slow Me Down in two months time.

Although the band aren't planning a new album until 2008, fans will be able to get hold of some new material when the DVD of the on-the-road documentary is released on October 29.

The film follows the band through 26 countries on their last world tour and features a brand new Noel Gallagher song - the title track, 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' - on the film's credits.

"It's quite rocking, it's just 12-bar blues really, but it's a good song." Noel told NME "It got left off the last album because it was the same verse all the way until the end, but it's kind of locked into that now because it appears at the end of the film."

The black and white documentary, shot by Ballie Walsh, mixes live footage with exclusive backstage access that sees the band hanging out with Kasabian in New York, Liam Gallagher meeting his self-proclaimed "spiritual heir" Charlotte Church and Noel going guitar shopping and winding-up interviewers in Japan.

Any good? Liam Gallagher thinks so...

"I buzzed off myself," he declared after a screening. "I played a blinder."

An edited version of the documentary appeared on British TV last year, but the two-disc DVD features a series of extras.

The band's triumphant homecoming show at the City Of Manchester Stadium from July 2, 2005 is featured in HD, along with a Q&A between fans and Noel.

However, Oasis have saved the best to last, as the DVD will feature the band themselves providing providing an alternative 'director's commentary' to the film.

We're thinking 'Wibbling Rivalry' (the epic NME interview released as a single on Fierce Panda back in 1995) over two hours.

"I'm doing the DVD commentary, yes" Noel declared enthusiastically when NME asked him about the project. "I begged them to let me do it. I'm going to have some fun with that."

Noel Gallagher's Artwork Used In New Book

Noel Gallagher is taking part in a book of pictures made by indie musicians.

Those musicians were asked to make a picture about a place which had a lasting influence on them.

Noels smiley is about Ibiza because everybody on Ibiza is happy and the smiley stands for the acid-house-culture of the eighties which is inevitably connected to Ibiza.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Roll With It" is a song by British rock band Oasis written by their lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was released 14 August 1995 as the second single from their second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory, reaching #2 in the UK Singles Chart (see 1995 in British music).

"Roll With It" received a great deal of attention when Food Records, the label of chief Britpop rivals Blur, moved the original release date of single "Country House" to clash with it, sparking what came to be known as "The Battle of Britpop". The British media had already reported an intense rivalry between the two bands and this clash of releases was seen as a battle for the number one spot. The media sensation was spurred on by verbal attacks from the respective camps (in particular Noel and Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn and Alex James), that extended beyond the music industry to the point where the two bands were regularly mentioned on the evening news. In particular, public imagination was sparked by the contrast between the gritty, working class Oasis and the artsy, middle class Blur. In the end, Blur's "Country House" single sold 274,000 copies to Oasis' 216,000 copies of "Roll with It". The singles charted at number 1 and number 2 respectively however many believe Blur won tactically selling their single for £1.99 compared to Oasis £3.99 single price.

In the week of its release, Damon Albarn was asked what he thought of the song. He dubbed the band as "Quoasis" and sang "Down, down, deeper and down" in reference of the song's likeness to Status Quo's 1975 hit Down Down [1]. At this time in their careers Oasis were often criticised for 'borrowing' samples from 60s and 70s bands; this was one such song containing 'borrowed' music.

The song is like several other songs, such as "Supersonic", in that preaches the importance of being yourself. Due to its combination of a catchy tune and positive lyrics, the song ranks amongst Oasis' most popular songs and is a standard at their live performances. Noel Gallagher does not like the song at all however, and described it in a 2005 interview as "appalling".

Trivia

The song was featured on All-Star Family Fortunes aired 23rd December 2006.

In the live performance on the Familiar to Millions DVD, Liam Gallagher changes the lyrics from "don't let anybody get in your way" to "don't let any fucker get in your way".

The cover photograph was taken at the beach in Weston-super-Mare. The five television sets the band members are looking at are shown on the inner sleeve, and feature Ian Botham (watched by Guigsy), Noel Gallagher from the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" music video, snooker player Alex Higgins (after winning the World Snooker Championship in 1981), Peter Sellers in a scene from The Party, and the Who's Keith Moon.
