Liam Gallagher: 'We'll Never Do A Radiohead'

Liam Gallagher has said his band Oasis will never allow fans to pay what they think their albums are worth, following the recent actions of Radiohead and their latest long-player In Rainbows.

Oasis are currently without a record deal, but speaking to Reuters Gallagher said it would be over his dead body to go into a studio to work hard on an album that fans can technically buy for absolutely free.

Speaking of their seventh studio album (the follow-up to 2005's Don't Believe The Truth), Liam said: "There's lots of cool parts, man. Really, we're throwing everything at it. It's gonna be cool, man."

He also went on to say brother Noel Gallagher was being less fussy with the new songs: "Hopefully our kid's learned his lesson. It shouldn't be hard making music. We've been doing it long enough."

As we recently reported, Oasis have begun work on the currently untitled album and are recording it at Abbey Road studios.

Oasis Full Speed Ahead With New Album

Oasis are making quick, early progress on recording their first studio release in three years, singer Liam Gallagher said on Tuesday.

He said studio work began last week on the band's seventh album since forming in 1991 and everything should be done by mid-December. After Christmas, the band will come to Los Angeles to mix the album aiming for a release around August.

As with Radiohead, Oasis are free of major-label shackles --but don't expect them to follow Radiohead's example, and allow fans to download the album from the Web for whatever price they feel like paying.

Gallagher, peppering his speech with expletives, told Reuters it would be over his "dead body" before he went into a studio and worked hard to release his work for nothing.

As was the case with 2005's "Don't Believe the Truth," the band is collaborating with producer Dave Sardy, and all the members have contributed compositions, not just primary songwriter and guitarist Noel, Liam's older brother.

Liam declined to reveal the titles of his songs, but said they are pugnacious in spirit.

Gallagher said "without a doubt" the untitled released would compare to the seventh U.K. albums of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, "Revolver" and "Beggars Banquet" respectively.

"There's lots of cool parts, man. Really, we're throwing everything at it. It's gonna be cool, man," he said.

The last album, he said, suffered from Noel's incessant tinkering in the studio.

"Hopefully our kid's learned his lesson," he said. " It shouldn't be hard making music. We've been doing it long enough."

"Don't Believe the Truth" reportedly sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. But the U.S. contribution was just 199,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Their biggest U.S. seller remains their second release, 1995's (What's the Story) Morning Glory?" with 3.9 million copies. The album's worldwide sales were reportedly about 19 million.

Gallagher said the band tried its best with its subsequent albums, but the results were not always favourable as they spend so much time away from the studio and on the road.

The 18-month world tour to promote "Don't Believe the Truth" has been recorded for posterity on the documentary "Lord Don't Slow Me Down," which just came out on DVD.

Director Baillie Walsh's black-and-white film depicts a band that has sharply cut back on its youthful hijinks. Board games, shopping sprees and football talk alternate with catty locker-room comments about Tom Cruise, Charlotte Church and Duran Duran.

Noel, 40, and Liam, 35, infamous for their homicidal attitudes to each other, display mutual affection -- for the most part.

Liam said they are getting along fine in the studio, though "We don't really speak that much. We just do what we do."

Neighbors Want Kate Moss Out!

Kate Moss and Davinia Taylor have made their neighbors angry. Ordinary citizens have lost sleep over this pair of party givers’ late night to morning antics. They claim that there was noise pollution from music, talk, singing and paparazzi.

A report said that Kate, Davinia, Liam Gallagher and Jamie Hince used the back garden to drink, chat and sing the night away.

The neighbors on St. John’s Wood estate belonged to the multi-millionaire group with their expensive properties. However, they led normal lives and some have young children who were disturbed by the noise. Some neighbors had written letters of complaints to their local police and councils. They hope that Kate will move into her new mansion soon.

The VHS features the whole show and a 20 minute documentary (entitled 'Mad Fer It') featuring exclusive interviews with Liam and Noel Gallagher. This documentary is unique to the VHS format.

Audio Version (CD / Vinyl / Cassette / MiniDisc)

The CD features a extra bonus track, a cover of The Beatles' song "Helter Skelter", which was recorded at the Riverside Theatre, Milwaukee, WI, USA on April 16, 2000.

A highlights CD was released on October 1, 2001 to celebrate Oasis' tenth anniversary as a band. "Fuckin' In The Bushes", "Step Out", "Stand By Me", "Hey Hey My My", and "Helter Skelter" were all ommitted.

As Liam didn't bother to sing the choruses of "Wonderwall" and also changed the words to other parts of the song ("By now you should have somehow... realised not to sniff glue" / "And all the lights that light the way are... doin' me fuckin' 'ead in!") at the July 21 gig, the version on the various audio formats features a different vocal track to the original one recorded at Wembley. This also applies to Noel's backing vocals. Most of these overdubbed vocals were recorded live at Oasis' gig at the Yokohama Arena, Tokyo, on March 5, 2000. Only one line: "I'm sure you heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt", is from the actual Wembley gig, as Liam slightly messed up this line in the Tokyo performance.

The audio version of the album is also missing various bits of between-track banter.

Other Trivia

A promo video of the Wembley version of "Gas Panic!" was distributed to music channels. The video featured visuals from throughout the gig and was slightly edited down to 6:57.

A "Gas Panic!" promo CD was issued in Brazil to promote Oasis' appearance at the Rock In Rio festival on January 14, 2001. The 2-track CD included the album version and an edited version of the Wembley track, which was edited down to 4:28.

The live album came about after the chaotic Wembley gig of July 22, 2000. This concert was being broadcast live to dozens of countries across the world but was hampered by an extremely drunk Liam Gallagher, whose out-of-tune singing and general ranting made it into an unappealing showcase of Oasis' live capabilities in the eyes of Sony BMG, who were worried about a large number of bootleg recordings being distributed.

Each of the six different formats (plus the 2001 highlights CD) had a different colour for its own cover art.

Oasis' first ever digital only single 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' has dropped out of the top 40 on The Official UK Singles Chart.

Last week the track was at 31 in the charts, the week before the track entered the charts at number 10.

The track, and accompanying video is taken from the DVD of the same name, which follows the band on their colossal world tour of 2005/6.

Caught Live: The Verve

A few things you should know about The Verve, for those not familiar with this phenomenal recently-reformed indie rock band, who got the Roundhouse audience chucking pints over themselves with glee.

First up, kooky frontman Richard Ashcroft taught Stone Rose Ian Brown all he knows about weird punchy swaying dancing, and everything Oasis singer Liam Gallagher knows about swagger.

Oasis even wrote Cast No Shadow about Richard on their hit second album (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Fomerly known as Mad Richard, Mr Ashcroft has carved a niche for himself in the rock firmament as a latter-day Syd Barrett, only without actually going bonkers and hiding in a semi in Cambridge.

And the thing is, Richard ruled with his psychedelic rock and stage presence that hasn't been seen since the Stone Roses were still viable.

What the Verve do, and always did, is build a bridge from the UK's experimental shoegazing scene to its jaunty tunes of Britpop.

All right, The Verve sometimes have a lack of tunes, but they make up for that with sheer noise.
The Verve always specialised in squally, feedback-laden guitar licks, coupled with an appreciation of psychedelia bred with top tunes that few bands held true at the time.

And this was what stunned. And thank God for that. The elegiac Bittersweet Symphony made your reviewer cry with its swelling beauty, and old Verve favourite and rarely-played History made my gig buddy boo-hoo too.

This was epic indie rock that never failed to please.

They Were 'Mad For It' Years Ago

It has been aimed at public figures from former footballer Paul Gascoigne to comedian Johnny Vegas. But the terrace chant "who ate all the pies?" was first sung more than a century ago, new research has found.

The phrase was first coined by Sheffield United fans in 1894 to honour goalkeeper William "Fatty" Foulke.

He weighed an imposing 24st and even made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the heaviest-ever footballer.

But it is not just sports fans who are recycling catchphrases. Researchers have also found that "mad for it" - an expression associated with Manchester and Noel and Liam Gallagher of rock band Oasis - dates from documents published in 1670.

It was used in much the same context as today, to convey excitement, according to Dr Julia Cresswell, author of The Cat's Pyjamas: The Penguin Book of Cliches.

The academic sifted through documents and records at Oxford University, where she teaches, in a bid to find the first recorded use for many phrases.

Graeme Le Saux On Oasis And More

Best player you ever played with?
Gianfranco Zola. In terms of skill and he was just a great role model. He was one of the few players that both home and away fans would cheer at the same time. He brought out a certain chivalry out of football supporters, something you would have seen when my Dad watched the game. And he was great round the training ground too, [sighing with nostalgia] he drove a great big Range Rover and sat perched on a cushion because he couldn't see over the dashboard without it.

Shall we talk about music? Small Talk understands you've been to a few gigs in your time.
Oh yes, Interpol are always brilliant.

Yes, Int...But for atmosphere Oasis at Maine Road was electric, like a homecoming gig. I was at the side of the stage because I know [namedropping shamelessly] Alan McGee and just looking out at the crowd took your breath away.

But, Oasi... Then there was the Stone Roses at Alexandra Palace back in the day. That might be my all-time favourite, musically. I saw Ian Brown a while back and I think I remembered more of it than he did!

The thing about Ia... I haven't been to Glastonbury. I'd love to go.

Don't bother, Graeme, it's full of Guardian types these days with their BlackBerrys' and social consciences and what not. What album does it for you?
Ooh, anything by Radiohead. [Has a little think] The Bends probably, although Kid A is pretty good, Hail to the Thief was too experimental though.

Well, it's a lot better than saying Snow Patrol, which is what 98.64% of sportsmen/sportswomen say...
[Sadly] Yeah, their first album was good but then like a lot of bands that taste success they got more poppy and staid.

Let Ride Have Their Place In Music History

Writing in The Guardian, Alan McGee thinks we should give Ride their due:With the resurgence of shoegaze - or nu-gaze - and Panda Bear, Animal Collective, Deerhunter and No Age all referencing them as an influence in interviews, I feel it's time to look back at one of the all-time underrated Creation bands, Ride.

In '91, Ride had the critical and commercial world at their feet. Their full-length debut Nowhere marked them out as teenage saviours of rock'n'roll. The Nowhere cover pictured an ocean wave, a knowing tribute to the wall of sound they were creating. And what a wall of sound: Andy Bell and Mark Gardener's guitars and harmonies underpinned by Steve Queralt and Loz Colbert's eight-mile-high bass-and-drum dance groove.

Nowhere fused Byrds and Sonic Youth influences with the exuberant spirit of their contemporaries, the Stone Roses and the House of Love. It epitomised the feeling that something was happening in independent music beyond twee C86 and third form baggy. However, by the time they released the follow-up, Going Blank Again (an album that originally had the title of Prog Rock), a year later, they were up against it.

Critics accused them of having nothing to say. Their influence had spread - now they were competing with a hundred shambolic versions of themselves. Despite this, they triumphed with the lead-off single which went to the top ten - the first Creation single to do so.

Leave Them All Behind was no longer the sound of shoegaze but full-blown psychedelic stadium rock. Their second single, Twisteralla, was played non-stop on Radio One. Going Blank Again demonstrated how powerful a group Ride had become. The sound they explored on Nowhere had coalesced into classic songs. The album's success kept Creation Records going during the My Bloody Valentine aftermath. Their sound was a revelation.

Nicky Byrne: 'Liam Gallagher Told Me To F**k Off When I Met Him'

They have sold 40million albums and this week are on course to notch up their seventh No1 album with new release Back Home.

But Westlife heart-throb Nicky Byrne insists it is their boss who is the real star — a certain Simon Cowell.

In an exclusive interview Nicky, 29, told me: “Simon is bigger than Brad Pitt in America. Ever since he started American Idol he’s become a megastar.

With 14 UK No1 singles, the boys are behind only Elvis and The Beatles for chart-topping successes — a record they have every chance of beating.

And they are still going strong after ten years, an incredible achievement in the fickle pop world.
In the past I’ve made no secret of the fact I’m not a fan of the cheesy cover songs they’ve put out.

Last year I launched a campaign to “Stop The Cocks” beating Oasis in the album charts, in reference to Oasis’ greatest hits album Stop The Clocks.

Needless to say Westlife’s army of fans bought The Love Album by the bucketload, beating Oasis hands down and forcing me to concede defeat.

But Nicky reckons, despite the knocking the lads sometimes take, he’d never want to swap lives with Oasis’ wildman Liam Gallagher.

He explained: “I love Oasis, they are proper musicians and songwriters and I’m a fan of their music.

“But I’d never want to be Liam — I could never be as obnoxious as him and I couldn’t lead his lifestyle.

“I met him once. We’d only just started out and we assumed all pop and rock stars would be nice to each other. We were naive.

"We were at the opening of a Tommy Hilfiger store in London and we saw Liam and said, ‘We’re from Westlife, Ronan Keating’s new band’.

“He looked at us, and just went, ‘F*** off’. Nowadays I’d probably give something back but I was just left speechless.”

But the lads could get one over on the likes of Liam by going on for years to come.

Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards, 63, rose 16 places to 10 after confessing to snorting his dad’s ashes.

Brit punk singer Frank Carter, 23, topped the list while Amy Winehouse, 24, was eighth for keeping her “beehive in place” in a drug-ravaged year.
