An artist who has produced work for Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys will be holding an exhibition at the Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.

Pete McKee's A Month of Sundays exhibition features paintings that hark back to a time before mobile phones and plasma televisions, with wistful images of workingmen's clubs and rundown seaside towns.

The exhibition runs from Saturday, December 15 until February 16.

Oasis To Play Oxegen Festival?

The first tickets for next year's Oxegen festival went on general sale yesterday morning, causing the thoughts of music fans to briefly wander from the cold winter weather to the-- hopefully -- sun drenched fields of Punchestown next summer.

And the indications were that fans wouldn't be put off by the prospect of a repeat of this year's washout, because the 'early bird' tickets for the now three-day event were reported to selling well.

"We expected it to sell out straight away but it didn't," a ticket seller in the Stephen's Green Shopping centre told the Irish Independent. "But they have been selling consistently throughout the day."

The 'early bird' tickets are being sold at last year's prices of €197.50 plus booking fee for a limited time.

Fans registered on the Oxegen website had the chance to buy their tickets as part of an internet only pre-sale from midnight last Tuesday to seven yesterday morning.

The first act for the Kildare festival has already been announced with the Kings of Leon, who played two dates in Dublin's RDS this week, voted by Oxegen fans as the band they most wanted to see in an online poll.

Promoters MCD say the band was immediately booked in response to the demand. "This is the first time ever the fans have selected a line-up for a festival," MCD's Justin Green said.

"The Kings of Leon topped the poll of the most requested act that the fans wanted to see. We're giving more choice to the fans."

Fans will also be able to choose which campsite they want to buy tickets for -- something MCD says increases choice for fans.

The full line-up for the festival will not be announced until February but early speculation has thrown up names like the Verve, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Franz Ferdinand, REM, Massive Attack, Orson and the Foo Fighters.

The January issue of UNCUT is on sale now, featuring an all-star panel of musicians selecting their favourite song by the late Beatle John Lennon.

Which Lennon song "flipped out" Brian Wilson when he first heard it?

Which one reminds Arctic Monkey Alex Turner of his mum and dad?

And when we asked The Who's Roger Daltrey for his favourite, what on earth led him to conclude: "I can see why people go completely mad in this business."?

And there's many, many brilliant contributions from the likes of Yoko Ono, John Cale, John Lydon, Jarvis Cocker and Liam Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Uncut.co.uk will be running online exclusives throughout the month

Liam Gallagher Responsible For Radiohead Spoof Site?

Remember back in September when a hoax Radiohead website was launched, featuring a countdown clock?

Well the site now features a new message claiming the man responsible for the page is none other than Liam Gallagher, front man with the band Oasis.

The site, which can be found here, states the following:

"Maybe This Will Clear Things Up

Well, it's bloody time we let the cat out of the bag. You've all acted like right wankers and entertained us long enough. The rumors you have heard are true ... I am responsible for this site.

It was a laugh. We're having a time recording the new album.

I'm writing deep songs that mean something but are dead simple. Nothing mystic. I want anybody to be able to understand them, even me.

You're all going to drive yourselves mad.

We have our 'discbox' and we're not going to share.

your favourite,

liam gallagher"

Oasis Head To Abbey Road To Record New Album

Oasis are back in the studio laying down tracks for their seventh studio album, and according to frontman Liam Gallagher, things are "f***ing rocking."

"We've got like 8 songs wrote. I think they're f***ing great," he told Spinner. "We've just gotta make sure we write the right record and so we're sort of just picking at these songs and sort of amplifying them a bit more. We've got off to a good start. There's not one acoustic song on it -- it's all f***ing rocking."

The band -- Liam, brother Noel Gallagher, rhythm guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell -- are in London's Abbey Road studios with Dave Sardy, the man who produced the group's last effort, 2005's 'Don't Believe the Truth.' "He's top man. I like him," Liam said of the producer. "We're all on the same page. We're all having a laugh and it's going really easy. We're not having any struggle with any sounds or anything. Touch wood it remains like that."

Liam admits to penning some of the tracks himself, though he wouldn't let their titles out of the bag. "Yeah man, I wrote a couple of songs," he said. "Some of them are rocking. I think they're really cool."

The roaring singer just started laying down vocals a week ago, his first time singing in quite some time. "I've only started singing on this record [recently]," he said. "I've not sang for like six months so I'm easing into it."

By easing into it, Liam noted he's been doing "ten takes of each song" to get the vocals down, "and then we've got it." So far the studio experience has been a good one for the group, the frontman said. One of the best things for the Beatle-loving outfit though has been simply recording in Abbey Road.

"Amazing -- it's amazing man," Liam said. "It's the best studio in the world. As soon as you're in there -- we've been like filming and that in there, if you've got the right clothes on it could be done in 1960. It could be done at any time. You just have to make sure you're wearing the right stuff ... and it smells really nice and old and (puts on an American hippie accent) it's just a nice place to be, man!"

Robin Friday - The Greatest Footballer You Ever Saw

The genius of Robin Friday.

He played for Reading (and then Cardiff for a short time) in the 70's and was a massive talent, almost single-handedly winning the Royals promotion. He was the ultimate party boy and there are many tales about him including the time he kicked Mark Lawrenson in the face and shit in his kit bag, took LSD on the team bus on the way to a game, missed the start of matches cos he was sitting in the pub and scored a goal some believe to be the best ever, unfortunately it'll never be seen due to the lack of video cameras at the time!

He also featured on the front cover of SFA's 'Man Don't Give A Fuck' single and Paul McGuigan (the ex-Oasis guy) wrote a book about him, which is well worth the couple of quid it probably costs on Amazon or Ebay second hand.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Let There Be Love" is a song on the British rock band Oasis' sixth album, Don't Believe the Truth. Written by Noel Gallagher, it is the second Oasis song to feature Liam and Noel on lead vocals, the first being the B-Side "Acquiesce". It was released on November 28, 2005 as the third single from the album in the UK, and the second single in the US. It reached number two in the UK charts, capping a very successful year for the band. Many critics cited this song as proof that Oasis had returned to form we had seen in the mid-90's.

A demo for the track was recorded during demo sessions for Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. A bootleg of these demo sessions was leaked onto the Internet in early 2000. This track was given the unofficial title "It's A Crime" on many bootlegs as the track was unknown and unreferenced anywhere before then. The album version of the song is structurally almost exactly as the same as the demo with a slight change in melody in the part that Noel sings. The lyrics to the chorus remains intact, but the verses and bridge have totally rewritten lyrics.

The single version of the song omits the second verse and chorus.

A second, Noel-sung demo was released on the "Let There Be Love" DVD single. It has the same lyrics as the album version, and in fact the album version takes some elements from the demo such as the piano. It was probably recorded sometime in 2003 or 2004, prior to the main Don't Believe the Truth recording sessions.

The video is a montage of some of Oasis' live shows during the summer of 2005 including clips of the gigs at Hampden Park and the City of Manchester Stadium. The clips don't actually show the band playing 'Let There Be Love'.

The song has only been played live once, on an Italian radio show in late 2005.

Noel Gallagher Has To Get A Police Guard

Oasis have been given a police guard at Abbey Road Studios after a crazed stalker turned up and threatened to chin Noel Gallagher.

The Manc rock lords are holed up in the famous North London complex, working day and night on their seventh album.

But the recording was interrupted last week when a crazed Greek fan showed up demanding to speak to guitarist Noel about song lyrics on the new album that he claimed the Oasis rocker had stolen.

Police were called to sort the headcase out after he threatened staff but he fled just before they arrived. A source at the studio said: “The guy showed up in a proper rage.

“He meant business and was clearly off his rocker.

“He claimed that he had written all this material that Noel had nicked off him for the new album.
“The fella was fuming and was threatening to beat Noel up over it all.

Security

“He was cursing at staff and being really threatening so the cops were called in.

“He tried to force his way into the studio but couldn’t get through. He heard the police were coming and turned on his heels.

“By the time the bobbies got down there he had gone.

“They had a word with the band and pulled Noel aside to tell him to be careful.

“They asked for a listen to the new album too but were politely thanked for their help and shown the door.”

Following the incident, Oasis have strengthened security at the studio and will have a police presence for the rest of the album’s recording.

It’s just not on disrupting the creation of rock’n’roll history.

Noel, brother Liam, Gem Archer and Andy Bell have nine new tracks written and almost finished.

It’s an important record for them and with music in the state it is in at the moment, we certainly need a big one from one of the UK’s heavyweights.

Noel has had a bit of bother in the past with mental fans.

When he was staying at his old North London gaff, Supernova Heights - zone HQ for most of the Nineties - he used to regularly invite randoms in for a cup of tea and a chat.

Then one day he realised he had a front room full of people he didn’t know.

Times are a changin’ for Noel these days, though.

He’s more likely to be sat in front of the fire with a nice, warm cup of Horlicks made by his missus Sara MacDonald (Scots women are the best after all), or reading bedtime stories to the wee man, Donavan.

The happy family were snapped out for an evening stroll in North London on Monday.

It looks like the Oasis lord could do with some much-needed kip after all that graft and stress in the studio.

He must be losing some of that stamina for the late nights...

Rock Royalty To Honour Joe Strummer

If ever a reminder was needed of just how much influence The Clash had on modern music, some of the biggest names in UK rock are forming a supergroup in memory of Joe Strummer.

Members of Oasis, The Smiths, Primal Scream, The Happy Mondays, Alabama 3 and Carter USM are set to stage a one-off gig performing their favourite songs of the legendary London punks.

Known as the Strummerville Collective in reference to the Strummerville charity set up after Joe's death, the supergroup will play JAMM in Brixton, London, on 22 December.

The gig has been organised to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the singer's untimely death and will also feature Jamie T, The Misfits and The Mentalists, as well as members of Paul Weller's band.

Jim Bob from Carter USM will be putting in a solo set and JC and the Disciples will be bringing back memories of The Members from 1977 and the burning flame of Rock Against Racism.

Confirmed members of the Strummerville Collective include Mani from Primal Scream, Bonehead from Oasis, Bez from the Happy Mondays, Larry Love from the Alabama 3, Nigel Clarke from Dodgy and Alan White from Paul Weller’s band.

Geoff Martin, director of the Left Field Stage at Glastonbury Festival, said: “We wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of Joe Strummer’s death with a unique event that marks the positive impact that his life had on so many of us. Brixton JAMM will be the place to be.

"Money raised will be shared by Strummerville – the Joe Strummer Foundation for new music – and RAR08 which will be fighting to stop the BNP in the run up to next May’s London elections. We also hope to make enough cash to put a bunch of guitars into Brixton prison as part of Billy Bragg’s Jail Guitar Doors initiative, in memory of Joe.”

London Calling - Remembering Joe Strummer takes place at JAMM, 261 Brixton Road, London, from 8pm to 2am.

Tickets cost £8 in advance or £10 on the door. Click here.
