Oasis' Noel Slams Hip-Hop Headline

Noel Gallagher has spoken out against the decision to recruit a hip-hop star to headline Glastonbury.

The Oasis guitarist blamed the failure to sell all the festival tickets on the decision to get Jay-Z to perform.

Organisers have insisted that slow sales are down to fears of more wet weather, but the 40-year-old Oasis star said it is "wrong" to have a hip-hop headliner.

He told the BBC: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

"Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Oasis headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1995 and 2004, with the event selling out on both occasions. Last week, 35,000 tickets remained available for the Somerset event, which is usually an instant sell-out.

Robert Richards, who assists Michael Eavis, has denied that getting Jay-Z to headline is slowing ticket sales, saying: "The weather has been a factor and that is bound to dampen people's enthusiasm but there is a real buzz about the place now. We are praying for sunshine.

"This claim about the headliners is complete nonsense. There are thousands of acts at Glastonbury and many revellers come to the festival without any intention of seeing the headliners.

"Anyway, I, for one, firmly believe that Jay-Z will go down in history as one of the great headliners."

An advert for the "most extraordinary festival anywhere in the world", was published in a national newspaper on Monday.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Hindu Times" is a song by English rock group Oasis, and was the first single to be released from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry on 15 April 2002. It was written by Noel Gallagher.

The title has little to do with the lyrics of the song, which are more in the vein of Definitely Maybe's "Rock 'n' Roll Star". It has been speculated that the title refers to the main riffs' similarity to Indian music in sound, sounding as if they were played on a sitar.



The song, which combines the powerful fast rock of their earlier work with the psychedelic feel of their later work, was one of the first Oasis singles since (What's the Story) Morning Glory to receive almost unanimously positive reviews from the critics.

The song was unveiled during Oasis' Fall 2001 Noise and Confusion Tour. The song was due to be released commercially at the same time but Noel decided the track needed more work done on it to be suitable for release.

Bailie Walsh's movie, 'Flashbacks Of A Fool', stars James Bond actor Daniel Craig as an ageing movie star reliving his troubled youth in 1970s Britain.

Other actors involved in the film include Daniel Craig, Helen McCrory, Olivia Williams, Emilia Fox, Harry Eden, Lily Allen's brother Alfie Owen-Allen and US rapper EVE.

As well as Oasis, Walsh has previously worked with Kylie Minogue, New Order, Spiritualized and Massive Attack

Oasis Return To Montreal

After a six year absence Oasis will be returning to play the Bell Centre on 5th September and is the latest date to be added to their fast-selling pan-Canadian tour. Once again the support will be Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

Noel Gallagher On Glastonbury, 02 Arena And More

Noel Gallagher has criticised the decision to have a hip hop act as the headline for the Glastonbury Festival.

The Oasis guitarist said having rapper Jay-Z at the festival is the reason it has not sold out this year.

He also said the event's organisers had changed things too much and that it was "wrong" to have a hip hop headline act.

There were 100,000 tickets sold for Glastonbury on the first day, but in past years all tickets had sold out in a matter of hours.

Gallagher said: "If it ain't broke don't fix it.

"If you start to break it then people aren't going to go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

"Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go 'Kylie Minogue?'

Oasis headlined the main stage at Glastonbury in 1995 and 2004, with the event selling out on both occasions.

Gallagher also rubbished recent stories saying that Oasis were ready to "do a Prince" and have a residency at London's O2 Arena.

"We'll never play the O2. We went there to see Led Zeppelin and to be honest the gig was fantastic, but it was the most soul destroying venue I've ever been to.

"And much to our manager and agent's disappointment we came back and said we would never play there.

"So it means we are going to have to do 640 nights at Earl's Court, I would have thought.

"It's too Americanised for me, and it's too far away. Any gig you can get to by boat that hasn't got a beach is wrong."

New album

He did confirm that Oasis seventh studio album is complete.

"That's finished. All done. We're just kind of waiting to get a record deal and get it out.

"We've not managed to get a title yet. We're in the middle of doing the art work. Down to a shortlist of about three. The first single? That will be four-and-half minutes long."

When asked if Oasis were still Britain's band, or whether the Arctic Monkeys had taken over that mantle, Noel admitted: "We'll be bigger than them in terms of ticket sales, but they'll probably sell slightly more records than us.

"But then again they've got about 20 years on us. So see where they are in 2089, or whenever it is they'll be my age."

Yo Gabba Gabba Gallagher

Liam Gallagher is being lined up for a role on super cool kids' TV show Yo Gabba Gabba!

Star names like Lord Of The Rings hero Elijah Wood, skateboard legend Tony Hawk, sexy R&B star Mya and US indie pop heroes The Shins have already appeared in the smash-hit show on kids' channel Nick Jr.

Now the Oasis frontman is set to be next after his six-year-old son Gene talked him into accepting an invitation to take up the role.

A source close to the 35-year-old star said "He thinks the show's really good and he's ready to get involved."

US-made Yo Gabba Gabba! has become a global hit since it was first screened in America last year.

It launched in the UK on Nick Jr on February 18 and has quickly become a must-see for kids as well as adults. It is hosted by a character named DJ Lance Rock and five toy monsters - Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex and Toode.

The show uses its cuddly creatures, wild jokes and catchy music to teach kids of five and under that, for example, it's OK to apologise when they make mistakes or to try foods they have never tasted before.

Christian Jacobs,who co-created the show and takes the role of MC Bat Commander, is also the lead singer in US rock band The Aquabats. He's happy adults can watch the show "without wanting to hang themselves with a guitar string. My Kids don't know who bands like The Shins are or why they're cool but we can introduce them to each other."

An insider added: "We can't wait to see Liam. His sense of humour is perfectly matched to that of the show."

Oasis In Talks Over £15m Dome Dates

Some might say they're more suited to a pipe and slippers these days.

But I can reveal Oasis frontmen Liam and Noel Gallagher are planning a return to their cigarettes and alcohol heyday. I hear the lads have been in talks with AEG - the owners of the O2 - about a series of gigs later this year.

And I'm told the dates at the Dome will pocket the Britpop boys a supersonic £15million. The gigs will follow a series of shows in Canada and the US in August marking the release of the seventh Oasis studio album - recently finished in Los Angeles. A band insider says: "The dates will be a real special event - and the first major rock residency at the O2.

"There have been lots of pop acts there - the Spice Girls and Prince. And Led Zeppelin did one date. But no band has yet set up camp there for a whole run.

"They are lining up 10 dates some time in the autumn at the Dome before taking on the rest of the world."

Their London shows alone will net the band around a cool £1.5million a night.

The shows will eclipse Liam and Noel Gallagher's legendary weekend at Knebworth in 1996 when they earned a staggering £6million playing to 250,000 fans.

As yet no other UK shows have been announced, but I also hear they will be announcing a load more US dates.

Superfans like me will remember the early years, when every trip to America turned into a nightmare - with Noel famously quitting one tour in 1994.

Let's hope the older and wiser Gallaghers have put their warring ways behind them and finally bury the hatchet - just not in each other.

Noel Gallagher To Get Sneak Preview Of Kasabian's New Album

Kasabian have revealed that they have almost completed their third studio album, despite the obvious distractions.

"We go to the studio, potter around, eat sandwiches and it's hard to get things finished. We're about 80 per cent done now," said bassist, Chris Edwards talking to The Sunday Mirror.

Details of the follow up to Empire have been scarce, but songwriter Sergio Pizzorno confirmed that last year’s very limited edition single 'Fast Fuse' will feature on the record.

"I think it's going to go on the album,” explained Pizzorno, to Uncut’s sister publication, NME. “We've had thousands of people saying we want it on the album, we want it on the album, so it's going to go on."

"We're sort of in the process," added Pizzorno. "I don't really know when it’s going to be released, but as soon as we think it's ready it'll be out. It's psychedelic this one, it's going to open your mind."

The band has also revealed that they will test out the new record on their close friend, Noel Gallagher

He added, "We're going to play it for Noel in a couple of weeks. He speaks his mind."

So how do bands end up with their names? Is there a band-naming website? Well, yes, actually, but none of these acts needed it. Gavin Cumine gets etymological

When Lou Reed moved into his new apartment in New York in the early Sixties he came across a book called The Velvet Underground, by Michael Leigh, which detailed various underground sexual practices of the early Sixties.

In 1977 post-industrial Manchester Ian Curtis was reading The House of Dolls by by Yehiel De-Nur. In the novel De-Nur describes joy divisions, which were, allegedly, groups of Jewish women in concentration camps during the Second World War kept for the sexual pleasure of Nazi soldiers.

In the early nineties the band The Rain were looking for a new lead singer and a change of name. They decided to take on local loudmouth Liam Gallagher as singer. Hanging on the wall of Liam's bedroom, which he shared with brother Noel, was an Inspiral Carpets tour poster. Noel at the time was a roadie for the band. On the poster was one of the venues : the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon.

The beginning of any band's biography is their name. It is the starting point of a band that will accompany its sound for the rest of their career, through success and failure. Some band-names come around by coincidence, careful thought or just simply for the fact that it is a great combination of words that slip off the tongue easily. On This Day in Oasis History...

"Supersonic" is the debut single released by British rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It also appears on their debut album, Definitely Maybe. It was released on the 11 April 1994 and peaked at #31 on the official UK charts. It was the song performed by the band on their debut national TV performance on Channel 4's The Word, which aired on 18 March 1994. It remains to this day a favourite song of both the band and the fans (on the Definitely Maybe DVD, Noel cites it as his favourite Oasis song). The single went silver in the UK on June 30, 2006, 12 years and 3 months after its original release.

In spite of its popularity, Gallagher claims the song is basically a collection of nonsense lyrics written in a matter of minutes, just before the band entered the recording studios to record the track. The identity of the character "Elsa" caused some confusion — according to the song She done it with a doctor/On a helicopter/she sniffin' in a tissue/Sellin' the Big Issue. Noel claims, "Someone told me "Supersonic" was about teenage prostitution. Shit!". It has since been revealed that Elsa was a nine-stone rottweiler with a flatulence problem who was in the studio on the day the song was written, hence the line "she's into Alka Seltzer". It was written and recorded at The Pink Museum in Liverpool. The plan was for Oasis to record "Bring It On Down" for their debut single and another bunch of demos. However, "Supersonic" was written and it impressed everyone so much, it was chosen to be the band's first single.

In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Supersonic" at number 20 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Supersonic" at number 25 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

The song is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks.

Be@rbrick is a collectible toy designed and produced by MediCom Toy Incorporated. The name is derived from the fact that the figure is a cartoon-style representation of a bear, and that it is a variation of MediCom's Kubrick design.

The at sign in the place of the letter a is a visual device that is a part of the Be@rbrick brand, and as such, a trademark of MediCom Toy.

Exclusive Oasis Track Used For Rock Band's European Launch

Officials from Electronic Arts have officially announced a release date and price structure for MTV Games and Harmonix’s Rock Band in Europe, where difficulties in manufacturing enough bespoke controllers to meet demand has so far limited its release to North America.

Due to continued stock issues, the European launch will initially be limited only to the major markets of the UK, France and Germany, with a release date of May 23rd.

Unlike North America, the game will also initially be limited to release on the Xbox 360, earning an unspecified window of exclusivity before the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Wii versions are released “later this summer”.

There are also considerable changes to the pricing structure of the game, with no confirmation yet of a single bundle which includes all the peripherals and software.

Instead, Electronic Arts has confirmed to Gamasutra that an “Instrument Pack” will be released containing a guitar, drum and microphone controller for £129.99/€169.99 ($256/$267).

The actual game will be bought separately for an additional £49.99/€69.99 ($98/$110). As in North America, each peripheral will be sold separately, with wireless guitar controllers selling for £59.99/€79.99 ($118/$126) and drum kit controllers for £69.99/€89.99 ($138/$141).

The European version of the game will contain new exclusive tracks not found in the North American version, with three titles aimed at the British market (Blur “Beetlebum”, Oasis “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” and Muse “Hysteria”), two at the French (Les Wampas “Manu Chao” and Playmo “New Wave”) and four at the German (Die Toten Hosen “Hier Kommt Alex”, Juli “Perfekte Welle”, Tokio Hotel “Monsoon” and H-Block X “Countdown to Insanity”).

Additionally, all songs currently available for download in North American will be available immediately in Europe from May 27th. Following that date, all new Rock Band downloadable content will be available simultaneously worldwide on a weekly basis. Each new track will be priced at 160 Microsoft Points ($2).
