Usher Hits Out Over Noel Blast

Noel Gallagher seems to have upset a lot of people by saying Jay-Z is the wrong choice to headline Glastonbury.

First, Glasto chief Michael Eavis criticised the Oasis legend on these pages. Now Usher has hit out.

I think Noel is right but the R&B superstar disagreed, telling me: “It really shocked me that he said that. Jay-Z is an incredible artist and headliner.

“I saw him perform at the Hollywood Bowl in LA, and you’re not getting better than that.”

Usher, who is due to arrive in the UK tomorrow to promote new album Here I Stand – which hits shops on May 26 – added: “When we got to work together on my new album, I was sitting there like a fan the whole time.”

If you’re an Usher fan and want to meet him, I’d start hitting London’s clubs.

Despite him marrying and becoming a dad last year, the singer has no intention of slowing his party lifestyle while he’s over here.

Party

A source says: “Usher has requested a list of London’s top hotspots for him and his 30-strong entourage. And he’ll also be throwing a huge celebrity party to launch the record.”

I imagine one Bizarre Lord, Noel Gallagher, won’t be on the guest list.

Meanwhile, Glasto boss Eavis is desperate to make sure Amy Winehouse plays this year’s festival.

Despite all her personal problems, he says the Back To Black singer even beats Jay-Z as his No1 pick for the June 27-29 event.

He told me: “We want Amy. I can’t say anything else at this stage except that she was my first choice when I starting to compile a list of artists.”

All-Star Cover Band Camp Freddy Cover Oasis

All-star cover band Camp Freddy were joined on-stage by members of the Sex Pistols, Motorhead, Jane's Addiction and Alice In Chains for their show at the Roxy in Los Angeles on May 1 that kicked off their month-long residency at the legendary Sunset Strip club.

The band, which features Billy Morrison (The Cult), Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Sorum (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver), Donovan Leitch (son of singer Donovan), and Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction), performed cover songs by their guest performers as well as Blur, Led Zeppelin and Oasis.

"We're going to bring on half of the Sex Pistols for their song 'EMI' -- now I can die and go to heaven," Morrison said when the legendary punk band's guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook took the stage.

"What can we do to top that?" Morrison asked at the end of the Sex Pistols number before introducing Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister who sang his band's hit 'Ace Of Spades'.

The evening's guest parade also included Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Steven Perkins of Jane's Addiction and Warren DeMartini of Ratt.

For their grand finale, the band brought on nearly all their guests as well as scantily clad dancing women for a cover of The Stooges' 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'.

They played:

Cheap Trick- 'Hello Ladies and Gentleman'
Blur-'Song 2'
Killing Joke-'Eighties' w/Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray)
Oasis-'Rock ‘n’ Roll Star' w/Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)
Led Zeppelin-'Good Times Bad Times' with Poe, Bettencourt
Adam Ant-'Ant Music' w/Steven Perkins (Jane’s Addiction)
David Bowie-'Suffragette City' w/Warren DeMartini (Ratt)
Ratt-'Round and Round' w/DeMartini, McGrath

Camp Freddy will continue their residency at the Roxy with different guest performers each Thursday for the rest of May.

Cardiff City's FA Cup Song In Stores Today

James Fox, the UK representative in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, will release a new single to celebrate Cardiff City Football Club's success in reaching the final of the FA Cup.

The song Bluebirds flying high is written and performed by James Fox. Bluebirds flying high, best described as a football anthem, is being played on local radio stations in Wales as part of the build up to the official release taday and ahead of the FA Cup final against Portsmouth on May 17th.

The song is in stores today, If the 30,000 at Wembley buy it then the club could have a number one and the FA Cup hopefully to go with it.

Oasis Pair In A Jam With Paul Weller

Now that’s a supergroup I’d like to see in action. Lords Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Gem Archer and Steve Cradock belting it out in a tiny club would be awesome.

This exclusive snap was taken shortly after the four rock titans came together to record a track.

The song, Echoes Round The Sun, was the result of a boozy recording session between the Oasis duo, the Jam legend and Ocean Colour Scene guitarist Cradock – and Noel’s still clutching his can of beer.

It will be out as a double Aside with Paul’s Have You Made Up Your Mind on May 26 and will be the first release from Paul’s forthcoming double album 22 Dreams.

It’s a great collection of tracks and by far the most varied from the Woking-born singer.

It’ll surprise fans expecting another Heavy Soul-style Mod rock set, but it’s good to see there’s plenty of tricks left in Paul yet.

Eavis In Glasto Blasto At Noel

Defiant Glastonbury chief Michael Eavis has hit back at Noel Gallagher for criticising this year’s bill.

The Oasis legend added his words to the Glasto debate and said booking Jay-Z to headline was a mistake.

But dairy farmer Michael has now stuck the Wellington boot back into the rocker.

He blasted: “Why did he need to get involved? It was a bit weird, to be honest.

“He should give someone else a chance. He needn’t have said that and I was disappointed he did.

“He said it’s a place for guitar bands — but there are loads of guitar bands playing.”

However, I reckon Noel has every right to make his feelings known and was only saying what most music fans were thinking.

It wasn’t personal, as Noel is actually a pal of Jay-Z — he was just saying Glastonbury wasn’t the best stage for a big hip-hop act. And he’s right.

Robert Plant Snubs Liam Gallagher

British rocker Robert Plant was unimpressed when Oasis star Liam Gallagher visited his dressing room unannounced - and sent him on his way.

The Live Forever hitmaker made a surprise visit to Plant's dressing room as he took a break from a Led Zeppelin gig last year (07).

But as Gallagher handed Plant a series of compliments, Plant ordered the star out of his dressing room.

He says, "The Gallaghers came by the dressing room and leaned against the door. And Liam said, 'You're the f**king business you are, aren't you? You're the one.'

"And I said, 'Of course I am, I always knew that. It's just that you never switched on. You need the next door - down there on the left.'"

Gallagher Goes Sven-tal For City

In a matter of months Sven Goran Eriksson has gone from managerial genius and dead cert for my Bizarre Lord title to the verge of the sack.

The Sun revealed yesterday how Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra is plotting to axe the ex-England boss at the end of the season.

But current Bizarre Lord and Man City fan Noel Gallagher has launched the Save Our Sven campaign — and I’m right behind him.

The Oasis legend said: “Shinawatra has come in and I think he is a bit of a nutcase. If he gets rid of Sven after the best season we’ve had in living memory, it’s ridiculous, ludicrous.

“He obviously doesn’t know a great deal about football if he gets rid of Eriksson. The only thing that will get him off the hook now is if he has JOSE MOURINHO lined up.

“Shinawatra is living in cloud cuckoo land and if I saw Sven in the street, I’d give him a big kiss and say, ‘You know what, you take him to the cleaners’.”

Noel was so angry about The Sun’s story he phoned BBC Radio Five Live to vent his feelings.

And he added: “Any manager worth his salt won’t take interference from the owner and if he wants to buy players, then that’s wrong.

“City fans don’t want Ronaldinho anyway. If he won’t pull his finger out at Barcelona, he’s not going to do it at West Brom away next season is he?

“I’d be amazed and equally appalled if I met a City fan that felt that getting rid of Eriksson would be a good thing. We all love him.

“He has given the City fans pride. The minute’s silence for the Munich air crash at Old Trafford was a reflection of his personality. He is a graceful, dignified man and that summed it up.

“The style of football is fantastic but if Shinawatra comes in and thinks he is going to get Champions League football straight away, he’s tripping!”

I’m with Noel. The Premier League without the hotel-dwelling Swede will be a much duller place.

Oasish Set To Rock Glastonbudget

Music festivals. Once upon a time, we couldn't get enough of them. Tens of thousands of tickets would sell out in a matter of hours, and all the best bands would queue up to play.

Fast forward to 2008, and it's a very different picture.

Now, critics dismiss them as over-priced, over-hyped and over-commercial, and that's even before the challenges of the unpredictable British weather.

The fans too seem to be weary of the annual mudbaths and the burgers which cost £5.

In 2007, Glastonbury tickets sold out in less than two hours.

Tickets for this year are still available now - three weeks after they went on sale.

Glastonbudget - absolutely no relation to Glastonbury - is reversing that, having doubled its ticket sales year-on-year since it began in 2005 as the brainchild of Nick Tanner, landlord of The Harrow Inn in Thurmaston, and his old schoolmate Chris Dunn.

"Nick noticed that whenever he had a tribute band on, it drew three times the crowd.

This year's line-up includes many familiar-sounding names - The Kaiser Thiefs, Crowded Out, The Jamm, Let's Zep, and the Ded Hot Chilis.

One of the few acts to have played every Glastonbudget so far is Oasish - the tribute version of a certain well-known Manchester group.

Paul Higginson is the lead singer, Oasish's own Liam Gallagher.

"On the calender of gigs for us, Glastonbudget's one of the top gigs of the year, definetely," he says.

"I think there's only us and two other bands who've been back there every single year since it started, and it's quite a privilege to be asked back every year."

When I suggest to him that there must be dozens of other Oasis tribute bands, he answers with a swagger worthy of the real Liam.

"There's lots of tribute bands that'll do a gig for cheaper than what we would, but if you're gonna pay £30 for a jeans-and-t-shirt band, a £30 jeans-and-t-shirt band are gonna turn up and deliver a £30 jeans-and-t-shirt show.

"That's why Glastonbudget are getting bigger and bigger crowds each year, they're not scrimping on the quality of the bands."

Indeed, ticket sales for this year's festival are 40% up on last year, with fans known to be arriving from as far away as Denmark.

The organisers hope it might even be a sell-out with all 5,000 tickets taken.

"We've never actually broken even," says Nick ruefully. "It would be fantastic if we could do that."

:: The event begins at Turnpost Farm, Wymeswold, Leicestershire on May 23.
