Gallagher Brothers Attend Silver Clef Awards

Oasis were presented with the prestigious O2 Silver Clef Award today (04.07.08).

'Wonderwall' rockers Noel and Liam Gallagher attended the exclusive event at London's Park Lane Hilton hotel where they were given the accolade for their contribution to the music industry by boxing legend Ricky Hatton, who admitted to being a huge fan of the band.

Ricky said: "There are a few things in my life - my family, Manchester City Football Club and Oasis. If someone had said to me a few years ago you would be presenting Oasis with an award I'd have said they were daft. When you are a fan of someone it doesn't getting any better than presenting them with an award!"

When asked if he would be celebrating with Noel and Liam afterwards, Ricky said: "Noel said he is going to meet me for a pint, so that should be interesting!"

Noel - who controversially said rapper Jay-Z was the "wrong" choice to headline this year's Glastonbury music festival - also explained his comment.

He told BANG Showbiz: "All I did was give my opinion about ticket sales at Glastonbury and that's the end of it. For the record I like Jay-Z - it's just my opinion. If people don't like it, don't ask me any more questions. I should just be like every other s**t-bag pop star and just say, 'Everything is amazing'."

The event - which was held in aid of Nordoff-Robin Music Therapy, the chosen charity of the music industry which undertakes over 30,000 sessions annually with both children and adults - was hosted by TV presenter Myleene Klass and attended by celebrities including 'Dragon's Den' star Duncan Bannatyne, singer Lisa Stansfield and 'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson.

Other winners at the ceremony included Amy Macdonald, who was given The Newcomer Award by comedian Russell Brand following the huge success of her debut album 'This Is The Life'.

Glaswegian band The Fratellis won the Best British Band accolade, which was presented to them by 'Hot Fuzz' actor Simon Pegg.

Before the ceremony started, guests were treated to a Silver Clef luncheon, sponsored by O2.

They also took part in a Silver Clef auction, where prizes included a dinner at London's Dorchester Hotel hosted by Eddie Jordan, Mike Rutherford and Nick Mason, as well as three limited edition pieces of Paul Weller's Stanley Road album artwork by Sir Peter Blake, signed by Weller and Blake.

Noel Faces Up To Geri Halli-hell

There's nothing worse than your missus bursting your bubble.

Just ask Noel Gallagher. His partner Sara MacDonald shattered him when she pointed out the title he wanted to give to the new Oasis album was a Geri Halliwell hit.

He said: “The missus goes, ‘Bag It Up? Isn’t that a song by Geri Halliwell?’ I was like, ‘You’ve ruined my entire f****** year’.”

Dig Out Your Soul is released on October 6 but Noel has revealed he was not entirely aware of all of the songs on it.

He told Mojo magazine: “I was doing the Electric Proms with The Coral, who had recorded at my studio. They’d had a sneaky listen to our new stuff so singer James Skelly asks me, ‘Are you gonna do Soldier On?’

“I don’t remember it. Turns out Andy Bell recorded it with Liam – but Liam still doesn’t remember it!”

And Noel and Liam are still arguing – this time over the band’s new drummer Chris Sharrock, who used to work with Robbie Williams.

Noel said: “It was too much of a temptation to p*** Robbie and Liam off in one phone call.”

Jay-Z Says He'd Be Open To Working With Noel Gallagher And Oasis

Jay-Z has had tremendous success during his tour of Europe, bowling over fans with a slew of festival appearances, including his historic appearance at England's Glastonbury Festival on Saturday.

"Well, I'm pretty much now in a great place, I'm in the zone," Sir Hova of Brooklyn told MTV Base this week. "Glastonbury was a historic event for me, I played Milton Keynes the day after that and it's just ... You know, I'm feeling the love. Any time you can come from where I come from - Brooklyn, New York, everybody knows the story - [and] come so far. It's not that it's that far, but to come overseas and have people embrace you the way I've been embraced thus far, it's just an amazing feeling."

One person who obviously didn't share the fans' feelings was Oasis' Noel Gallagher, who was a much-publicized critic of having a rapper headline the traditionally rock-centric Glastonbury fest. Maybe Gallagher's stance has softened in the wake of Jay's acclaimed performance - Jay told us he's heard the guitarist wants to have a conversation.

"I haven't spoken to him," Jay said. "I heard he was reaching out, but I haven't spoken to him."

Jay even said he's open to working with Oasis in the future should something suitable come up. "Anyone," he answered, when asked about who he'd be willing to work with. "Oasis as well - it doesn't matter to me, I don't bear any grudge, it's all good. I just believe in good music and bad music, I've always said that. You look at any interview from the beginning of time, I've always stated that I don't believe in the lines and classifications that people put music in so they can easily define it."

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Sunday Morning Call" is a song by British rock band Oasis taken from their fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, and was released as the third and final single from it on 3 July 2000, peaking at #4 in the UK charts. The song is written and sung by Noel Gallagher, who took over lead vocal from brother Liam Gallagher on an A-side for the first time since "Don't Look Back in Anger" in 1996.

Though the song has the same anthemic feel that popularised many Oasis songs, and departs from the psychedelic feel of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, which had been poorly received by critics, it received a mixed critical reception. NME described it as "a dreary thing indeed", whereas All Music Guide described it as a "self-consciously mature departure from the group's usual ebullience... a deliberately mellow, mid-tempo [song]".

The music video is a take on the Jack Nicholson film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with characters resembling McMurphy and Nurse Ratched. It was filmed in an old mental institution in Vancouver, Canada and features Scottish actor James Cunningham, who has previously starred in the original play of Trainspotting. Unlike the film, the video begins with the McMurphy character escaping his home and giving chase to the authorities, and ends in a football match. While the inmates celebrate a victory, Oasis are seen watching from the asylum window, and Noel Gallagher makes a 'wanker' hand gesture at Cunningham.

This was, and still is, the only Oasis single to feature Noel Gallagher singing lead vocals on all of the songs on the single.

Banned from TV Noel Gallagher clip appears online

The intro reel played before Jay-Z's Glastonbury headline show on Saturday (June 28), which featured Oasis' Noel Gallagher's derogatory comments about the rapper, has been posted online.

The video features Gallagher's quote that Jay-Z had "no fucking chance" of pulling off a Glastonbury headline slot, spliced together with archive footage of figures including Bill Clinton, London mayor Boris Johnson and Queen Elizabeth II.

It also features members of the public commenting on Jay-Z, as well as Pharrell Williams, who bigs up the rapper.

The clip did not appear on the BBC's coverage of Glastonbury because all the footage it uses could not be cleared for broadcast, so until now only those present at the show have seen it.

Jay-Z followed the video montage by kicking off his show with a cover of Oasis' 'Wonderwall'.

Jay Z Boosts Oasis Sales

Jay-Z's headline performance at the Glastonbury festival on Saturday has helped boost the rapper's record sales.

The rapper's 2004 single 99 Problems is set to go straight into the Top 25 of the UK singles chart this weekend.

His Linkin Park duet Numb/Encore, which he closed his Glastonbury set with, is also likely to return to the Top 40.

The star has helped Oasis's Wonderwall return to the charts after he mockingly opened his set with the 1995 single, mid-week figures also suggest.

Huge exposure

Jay-Z chose to cover an Oasis track after Noel Gallagher told the BBC that he was "wrong" for the three-day Somerset festival.

The original version has experienced a huge sales boost, with the single challenging for a place in the Top 100.

What's The Story (Morning Glory), the album it originally appeared on, has seen sales increase of over 200%, while their compilation Stop the Clocks has had a week on week increase of over 140%.

A number of other acts which appeared at the weekend festival have benefitted from the huge exposure the event provides.

A few things from this months Mojo Magazine....

Noel confirmed that Zak has left the band at that former La's drummer Chris Shanrock is taking over. He also confirmed that Chris was offered the job after Alan White left.

There are five different versions of the album, "There's the cheap digital one, there's the other digital one that's slightly more expensive, there's a physical one in the shops, the there's a deluxe' one that's slightly more expensive, then there's a super deluxe one that has everything on it".

Noel on the new songs...

Bag It Up - Opening track. Inspired by the Pretty Things' song 'Baron Saturday' which appeared on their 1968 album S.F Sorrow. Noel's gutted as he didn't realise ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell released a song of the same name.

Shock of the Lightning - The first single, written by Noel, sung by Liam. Out on September 29. 'Instant and compelling' according to Noel.

I'm Outta Time - Liam-penned, Liam-sung 'lighters-in-the-air, John Lennon moment' according to Noel. First heard being rehearsed by Liam on DBTT studio documentary.

Soldier On - Another Liam number, last track on the album. Liam recorded it with Andy while pissed and band forgot about it until The Coral stumbled across it in Noel's studio and begged them to record it. Noel describes it as 'just one verse and one chorus' and 'a kind of lost-and-found story'. It goes 'a bit dubby' at the end and Noel plays melodica on it.

No Wonder Jay-Z Did Oasis

Jay-Z is no stranger to Oasis hit Wonderwall — he pumps it out to plastered punters in his New York bar every weekend.

The rap titan covered the Galllagher brothers’ signature tune in style during his headline set at Glastonbury on Saturday night.

The tongue-in-cheek rendition was aimed at Noel, who slammed festival organisers for putting the Brooklyn-born rapper on the top of the bill.

But the Jiggaman told MTV News: “I knew it so well because I play that song a lot in my restaurant on Friday nights after a few drinks. Noel has been one of my biggest detractors so I figured it was a cool way to start the show.”

New Order And Smiths Project Gets A Release Date

Former New Order member Peter Hook has confirmed that Freebass, the band he announced last year with The Smiths' Andy Rourke, will release music by March 2009.

Hook told Billboard that he is "sick of talking about it" and that "It's coming out and I don't care how rough it is".

Liam Gallagher (Oasis), Ian Brown (Stone Roses), Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) are all rumoured to feature as guest vocalists.

Hook "retired" from touring with New Order in late 2006. In May 2007, he took action against the other members of the band continuing without him. In January this year, he announced that the band had split up.

The Smiths broke up in 1987. They have never played together since. Lead singer Morrissey says they never will.

Jay-Z Kicks Off Glastonbury Set With Oasis Cover

The rapper mocks Noel Gallagher's criticism of his headline slot

Jay-Z kicked off his controversial Glastonbury headline slot tonight (June 28) with an Oasis cover - hitting back at Noel Gallagher's criticism of his booking.

Before the show started, a montage of clips played, concluding with the recent interview Gallagher gave where he said the Pyramid Stage performance was "not right" for the festival.

Before a huge crowd, the superstar rapper then mimed along to Oasis' huge 1995 hit 'Wonderwall', to huge cheers.

Speaking earlier to Tim Westwood for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Jay-Z said of the Gallagher controversy: "You know that sometimes remarks are made out of ignorance. If Noel Gallagher saw me perform and he said that then I understand that - that is a personal opinion and I have no bearing on how he feels – you know – it's just not your taste. But he has never seen me perform - I'm sure or else he wouldn't say that. We will see what happens after tonight!

"You know the funny thing about it with Noel and whoever else – for the most part, everyone's ready. I thought the resistance - it would be like – I thought it would be like an old guard versus the new guard but it's really not like that. You know, right now, every single person that I have seen, that I've encountered, that walked up to me - everyone is very excited about the show and ready for it so I feel good about it."

Hoosier Money On, Noel Or Jay-Z?

Better get The Hoosiers' frontman Ian Sparkes a big wooden spoon because he's been stirring up trouble between Noel Gallagher and Jay-Z.

In a tense stand-off over the past two months, the two musicians have been caught up in a war of words. And now naughty Ian thinks they should sort it out in a fight.

He told us: "I'd pay to go and see Noel and Jay-Z slug it out. Noel wouldn't stand a chance though - Jay-Z's a big bloke. He'd kick his arse."

How mature.

Jay-Z's Glasto Rap For Noel Gallagher

Jay-Z will deliver the ultimate two-finger salute to Noel Gallagher when the hip-hop star headlines at Glastonbury tonight.

Oasis star Noel stuck his neck out and claimed The Jiggaman’s type of music was Wrong for the festival.

Now the American plans to broadcast Noel’s innocent, throwaway musings to Glasto’s 300,000 punters when he takes to the Pyramid Stage.

Bizarre lord Noel joked that hip-hop topping the bill at the Somerset bash was a blunder.

His typically cheeky red-carpet interview last April, in which he insisted hip-hop had no place at Worthy farm, soon mushroomed into an international music crisis.

Now Jay-Z has secured rights to the interview — as well as Gwyneth Paltrow's defence of Jay-Z a few days later — and will pump it all out at a deafening volume across the rolling hills of Glasto before he wheels out his rap bangers.

That’s one way to face down the critics.

But last night Noel shrugged it off as a storm in a teacup. He said: “Blaring out? I f****** doubt it very much. There aren’t enough speakers. Well, I guess it will make the first five minutes interesting.”

So here is what Noel originally had to say about Glasto: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

“Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw in the odd curve ball on a Sunday night you go, ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

The Brooklyn-born former drug dealer has been blamed for poor ticket sales at this year’s event. And news he was to top the bill on the prestigious Saturday night shocked many.

Pelted

But with millions of album sales under his belt, there’s little doubt the Grammy winner is one of the most successful solo males on the circuit at the moment.

Hip-hoppers have a history of not being particularly well received at British music festivals, though. 50 Cent battled a barrage of urine-filled bottles when he played Reading Festival in 2004.

And Brit MC Lethal B was pelted with clods of earth during his set at the Download Festival earlier this month.

But Jay-Z is clearly a sharp character and a proper showman to dream up a stunt like this.

It wouldn’t surprise me if, for his encore, he belted out Wonderwall.

Oasis And Arctic Monkeys Bookmakers Favourites For Headline Act At Glastonbury 2009

Despite reports of the demise of the Glastonbury, bookmakers William Hill are confident that the world's largest festival is here to stay.

William Hill are offering betting odds of 12/1 that Glastonbury does not take place in 2009 and are already betting on the headline act for next year.

Betting odds suggest that the Arctic Monkeys will be the headline act at 3/1 with Oasis 8/1 and the unlikely Leona Lewis at 33/1.

"Glastonbury is a highly successful event and one we expect to continue for many years. That said we do not think the organisers will choose such a controversial headline act next year and make the Artic Monkeys are favourites to headline in 2009." said William Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.
